Hyundai once had a seemingly foolproof business plan. It was to sell cars that were a little off the pace in terms of finish and engineering at knockdown prices. Who cared if the car you bought was 10 per cent less competent than the market leader if it was 40 per cent cheaper? Then things changed. Safety legislation and emissions regulations dictated that car companies needed to be right on the mark when it came to these areas and Hyundai's product philosophy changed markedly. Suddenly Hyundais were as good inside as many of their mainstream counterparts and in many ways better. Take a look at the ix35 compact SUV for evidence of this. Sit in one of these and compare it to, say, an early BMW X3 and you'd never think the ix35 was the cheaper car.
The ix35 has been one of those sly big sellers in the Hyundai range, sneaking in under the radar of many industry commentators until the sheer number of them on the roads makes them impossible to ignore. Hyundai did a lot right with this car and here's how to snag a great used buy.

I have the 2014 limited and it’s awesome. 150k miles and totally fine!! No problems at all! Engines still good 👍🏼

I bought one a couple of months ago and I love it. It's fantastic to drive, you can set the driving position exactly as you want it and it 's really comfortable. The only criticism that I'd have is that I could do with the suspension being a tiny bit stiffer. That's a small price to pay though. I'd highly recommend one. My 10 year old daughter also very much approves of it, and don't be fooled by the fact that she's a 10 year old girl, she's the biggest petrolhead that I've ever known.

I have a 2014 1.6 petrol 2WD. It is overall a good car. Engine is sufficient, don't expect racing 😊. Fuel economy is good. No issues whatsoever, except for the front seats, they are (fake) leather/fabric combo. A known issue is that the (fake) leather is cracking/tearing over time, of course after the warranty expired. Hyundai never solved that, so that is a downer.

Avoid 2010-2013 they were cheap built and known for issues and engine failure.2014 onwards were a lot more reliable.I would also avoid 1.6 litre as have read bad reviews on that size engine.

I have a 2013 premium model and no issues at all engine wise, only issue I have at the min is a black screen for reverse camera, but think this is water ingress or a broken wire.

I do love mine, but I've just had electric issues. No passenger windows work, boot locked, no central locking, no rear camera or wiper and no headlights?? Anyone had this issue??

I'm having a similar issue with mine (2013 model). It's cost me a fortune in repairs in the last 3 years 😩

"what's not to like" - the engine issue that crops up at 100,000km where the engine dies and requires replacement, usually just out of the warranty period

Seems like you probably bought a clocked car or something was off somewhere. Most ones are hitting 300k plus

Never. If I could go back in time Id never buy one. These models were ditched by hyundai because they had a gearbox fault. I bought one (2012) with 72k on the clock, a year later & the gearbox went. $4700 later & a new gearbox & its still in repair 12wks later with no eta & because it was bought 2nd hand Hyundai wont touch it & tbere are no 'lemon laws' in Australia.
