Minimalists always have white walls and rows of houseplants! We can’t have plants indoors because our cat has a seek-and-destroy attitude to them. I don’t look like a minimalist. I look like a charity shop threw all its stock over me and my house.
Minimalism is not being a victim of consumerism. Is focusing in being rather than in having. It is getting rid of the superficial and focus in your real needs.
@@govegan6112 In a nutshell, it's the embracing of negative space, intentional negative space. The concept that negative space gives as much beauty and value as a piece of art in a space.
I’m a grown a** lady and don’t care if people think I fit the minimalist definition! Being a minimalist is good for my sanity, my financial priorities, and the environment. As my 12 year-old wisely said, “Less isn’t more. Less is enough.”
I think minimalism just means getting rid of anything that doesn't add value to your life. For example, I have a LOT of books but each adds happiness and value to my life. Its about keeping what adds to your life and removing the excess. I think it also ties in to being more mindful about buying/bringing new things in
I love it, the RUclips algorithm‘s idea of minimalism is so far from actual minimalism *slow clap*. (Also, I’m totally shook because at 8:09 I saw my face. 😳🤣)
Am a mom of 2. It’s stressful seeing so much clutter and cleaning up all the time. Decluttering and minimising is helping me reduce the ‘noise’ and visual clutter. Minimalism is also helping question some of my choices so that I can be a more intentional with my time and finances.
I turned to minimalism with young children too! I needed to get control of our small space and our small budget, although the former was easier than the latter! I have taken it next level thinking about my reality/fantasy self and shopping (or not) smarter.
It takes courage to put yourself in front of a camera and speak from the heart about a personal journey. I believe we should focus on our own goals for minimalism and not criticize anyone’s approach to minimalism. I’ve learned so much from you and appreciate your openness.
I think the extreme views of minimalism make it hard for people on the fence to adopt the thinking. I've heard from a few people "oh I could never be minimalist, I love my clothes too much", not realizing they can still love clothes and be minimalist.
The whole small wardrobe thing always make me feel bad about myself for enjoying fashion lol. My own closet generally fluctuates anywhere between 100-150. Most people wouldn’t consider that “minimalist” but it def is to me. It’s a number I feel very comfortable & peaceful at...plus most of the pieces are functional, intentional & versatile. It works for my lifestyle and gives me joy w/o overwhelming me. Idk why I need to feel guilty about this lol.
I agree, I live in a 4 seasons climate, and have owned 125 pieces consistently throughout my 4.5 years as a minimalist. I have capsules within this for 5 seasons (the 5th is Christmas). I wanted to get down to 100 items because it sounded cool, but I can't justify it because it's arbitrary, and everything left in my wardrobe brings me value.
Yes! My goals are to stay within my monthly budget, only purchase intentionally, and only have things that I enjoy and use. That being said, I love fashion and have A LOT of clothes. One of the reasons for this is that most of my classic pieces are good quality and I have had for many years. Everything in my closet is in good condition, fits both my body and my style, and are in the colors that suit me and work together. When I add something new, I think about it for months, and usually by waiting am able to buy it second hand. I don't really care whether I fit into the minimalistic mold. But I LOVE this channel, and it matches my goals, however you label them.
Being a minimalist is a small aspect of my life. It just means that I am intentional with how I manage my inventory, and I try to keep the number low. There are so many aspects of life to manage when you have a family, pets, a house, live in four seasons, and have multiple hobbies. It is natural for someone in the prime of life to accumulate more communal things too like party supplies and camping supplies. For me, this stuff fits my lifestyle and gets used.
Love this! To me, minimalism is simply about getting rid of what isn’t working, carving away the excess. For example, some of my rooms would look minimalist (bedroom, yoga/meditation space) because I need to avoid to visual clutter for a calm environment , but others are what some might call maximalist (office, I’m looking at you!) because I need the energy and creativity around me.
This is so important for people to hear. Minimalism doesn’t have to be about the end result. It can be about the process and journey. I personally love the minimalist aesthetic but my life doesn’t look like that and I’m okay with it. I have around 20 top and bottoms and 15 handbags…. Is that excessive if handbags bring me joy in my wardrobe? I also have around 10 different haircare products but zero makeup products… because eyeliner doesn’t do it for me but leave in conditioner does! It’s about using what you love and loving what you use.
To me, minimalism isn't having the same wardrobe forever. After several decluttering cycles during quarantine last year, I was able to curate a wardrobe of cohesive pieces that all work together. Now that I've been wearing every piece several times for the last 7 months I can feel myself getting bored because I love fashion and keeping things interesting. I think it's totally okay to have a revolving wardrobe for different seasons and moods and even bring a couple of interesting items in from time to time. I find the one in one out rule helps a ton with keeping myself in check!
Excellent conversation about minimalism. When I first started on the minimalism path (with just my clothing), I got rid of a ton of stuff based on the rules and suggestions ... such as getting rid of any duplicates (which were only duplicates based on same items, but in different colors). Purchased items so all colors would match and the styles suggested. Bleh .... really not me. I had to start over by figuring out my reality of who I am and what I actually wear. My wardrobe at one point had grey, white, black, beige. I stood in my closet one day and was so bored and decided I need some color. I figured out I don't need to live with only 33 items and that I can have duplicates in the same and different colors when I really love the item and wear it all the time! It's definitely been a journey and a process and that will continue.
YES to everything! So well put 🙌 One of my favourite quotes is, “Simplicity is in an inner reality that results in an outward lifestyle.” It helps to reminds me of the bigger picture - that I’m not owning/buying less just for the sake of it, and minimalism is not the end goal or solution to everything - but a simple lifestyle helps me to focus on the things that I find most valuable & life-giving.
I’m on a minimalism journey... a looong one with plenty of slip ups and my house definitely doesn’t looks like a minimalist home. But hey, it’s a process, right? Love your channel so much and loving this new direction you’re going in!
I love how you are willing to share your transition as you figure out how to reduce debt and stop compulsive shopping. You are so relatable and non- judgmental. You are a wonderful role model. 🌷
I just started watching and right at the beginning when you said "you have too many clothes", "this doesn't look minimalist at all". I think that ALL or most of this comes from people focusing on minimalism as an aesthetic and/or COUNTING the number of pieces one has. Some people act like if you don't have Japandi home decor or plain jane clothing (and even if you have a small NUMBER of pieces but that are very colourful, patterned, etc), means you're "not really minimalist". This to me is an ignorant and narrow-minded view of PRACTICAL (rather than aesthetic - which people are obsessed with - everything must be grey/beige/greige) minimalism. PRACTICAL minimalism to me means being mindful about what you bring into your home, consuming goods more slowly, and valuing and getting use out of what you already have - from watching your videos, you're already doing this Christina and I really enjoy your content! I'll come back and edit my comment if I have anything else I want to add after watching. :) Edit: I agreed with everything that you said. I think you touched on that minimalism is not a journey to a specific number, which SO many people still think it is. Unfortunately, like with other movements/practices, some people try to make it into a "X than thou" type of thing. I understand that sometimes people like to attach themselves to certain practices/labels without actually making an effort/doing the work (e.g. They'll talk a whole lot about certain diets that they embrace for health reasons but...they aren't really sticking to it. They just like to be associated with it.). We have been watching you on this journey though - it's not like you're just talking and not doing. I mean, at this point Christina, some people might only be satisfied once you start filming in a bare room, maybe just on your iPhone only in natural light, no makeup, no furniture (maybe they'll allow you to have a floor mat?). Sorry for the long comment but again, I really enjoy your content! Yours is the only minimalism-focused content I've been watching consistently. Also, I blame you for my newfound (but low-key) obsession with Anine Bing. I signed up for the mailing list LOL.
I agree with this SO MUCH! I used to be that person who would subscribe to all the minimalism creators, only to find myself getting bored with them after a while. I find that most minimalism RUclipsrs post the same content over and over again to where it becomes trite and like a lecture to piggy back off of what you were saying. Christina is one of the few minimalism creators who has never given off that impression
All very well said. Minimalism to me is being aware of "all" the things that I own and being very mindful of what I allow myself to bring into my home, which also translates into me being responsible for properly disposing of said items at some point. I just want freedom from having to manage so much and controlling what I can control....like myself!
A big challenge to minimalist life to me is breaking the association of value based upon what I’d spent on an item. I could sell things but that takes time and I’ve found it’s best to just get it out immediately to whatever charitable organization is open that day. If it doesn’t serve me, it has to go NOW.
A lot of what you've shared is something that I can resonate with. I know that at one point in time during my journey, I got stuck inside this comparison trap, and other times, I was thinking too much about the decluttering process itself. There is no joy or value in trying to adopt to someone else's rules. Thank you for always keeping things real, Christina. I greatly appreciate it!
Well said..Christina..minimalism has a different definition for everyone...being mindful and enjoying what we have holds more importance than sticking to any rules..
For me, minimalism is about saving time and energy. A living room with lots of negative space, some plants, but no nick nacks or rugs is practical with a dog and a cat - easy to clean. A kitchen with clear counter tops is super quick and easy to clean. As an aside, I like the way it looks, and it makes me feel calm, but it's done with a view to function and practicality. Like you say, different for everyone. And with regard to clothing, whilst the number itself is not important, I have found that having a rough target has helped with recognising what I don't need, or love, or use, and helping me to declutter items that I love aesthetically, but don't like to wear. Another great video, and very slick editing -thank you. I hope your continuing Toronto lockdown is going ok. Love from Cornwall UK x
This set up reminded me of a principal's office, a bit rigid, which made this video feel more like a lecture. I really like the old set up with the couch because it felt a lot more relaxed and like I was just listening to a friend! Love the name change btw
For me minimalism translates into my life as intentional living. Think twice about what I being (clothes, books makeup, groceries plastic, etc.) in to my life and space. Find ways to help the environment and nurture my well being. I try and avoid buying plastic, even when I plan to buy makeup, I’ll rather go to the store vs having another package come in to my home. Instead of buying new plants I learned how to propagate the plants I already have. I’ve learned so much from you, and you’ve made me think about my choices and purchases before I go through with them. Thanks Christina.
I like Joshua Beckers definition of 'minimalism' best. "Minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things you most value and the removal of everything that detracts from it" . It all starts with what 'I ' value ...has nothing to do with anyone else.
Like your take on minimalism. For me minimalism means being mindful of what I have, what I use, what brings me joy, declutter what's not fitting this criteria and not buying things that are not needed.
I love the new setup...very clean and professional looking. I always come and listen to you after bi ge watchi g on some of the most hoarder ish makeup influencers...like a cold shower. Love your wisdom...keep up the good work 🤗
Hi Christina Minimalism to me is like you said a tool, when I first found minimalism I was searching how to stop spending on clothing and help to decluttering my wardrobe, I watched a lot of videos did the 30 day decluttering challenge with the Minimalists but now it has taught me a mindset to question my spending and has given me the freedom from consuming unnecessarily and just make me more happy and I think that is what I take from it x
Every point was spot on! Especially the importance of focusing on what minimalism means to YOU and how it can better your life rather than how it’s defined by RUclips/Pinterest/etc. Also gurrrrl those b-roll shots. 12/10! 🎥👏✨
Thank you! So helpful. I need to remember that this is a journey and to be intentional . And you are right about expectation because I wind up buying more stuff trying to replace what I got rid of and buying things that I think I am suppose to wear
Your perspective in this video made me think that the minimalism journey can evolve over time into a more thought trough way of living, described in other videos as an intentional or essential living - items that you need and make sense in your lifestyle. That’s what’s happening in my life, anyway. Thanks for YOUR inspiration 🌷❤️😘
The "why" is the real question/answer to minimalist/minimalist. We all must decide without judgment of ourselves and/or others what our choice of stress will be. As you said both have some level of stress.
I don’t look like a minimalist, but I have been practicing it for about 3-4 years now. Thanks to Matt, lol. You took the words out of my mouth on what minimalism both is and isnt. This video was great!
Minimalism is making room for what's important. It's clearing out the junk for the things you love. For me that's time, time with my family, to myself and less time cleaning.
Yes, I totally agree! For me, it’s about being intentional. I like to ask myself, when it comes to things, if the item is something I need/serves a purpose and if it sparks joy. ✨
Thank you for this video. I hate when people say that, for example, if you are a minimalist you have to wear neutral colour... why? I love your approach of minimalism! Hi from Italy
I feel your channel has helped me tremendously in the last month or so, so far this month I haven't bought or spent anything unnecessary, except like $1 for a coffee. I've been able to do my hobbies more and focus more on other things besides browsing amazon. I've also been able to declutter a bit and will donate once ontario lifts lockdowns. thank you tho, love from Hamilton
Absolutely loving the new setup! It’s very zen! (As I am enjoying your video while having a freshly brakes piece of Italian lemon cake)! Absolutely loved the information and perspectives in this video. ✨
the beauty of minimalism is that everyone has their own unique definitions for it. and LOL at the biceps. Matt's biceps are not very minimalist though 😂
I'm on my Minimalist journey, but I love my spices, seasonings and fully stocked kitchen. I like my black and Ivory clothing palette, but out of 14 t-shirt that i own 100% of them are graphic design. When I decided to begin my journey i decided to be intentional about my lifestyle regardless of how it looks to others and i have myself a HUGE no touch area. Dog toys. My pup didn't choose minimalism so she keeps all her toys so long as I can wash the dirt, grimme and stink. If they break they gone and no new toys unless is grooming day (the reward for doing what she hates the most on this world) which happens, maybe 3 times per year
For me, minimalism is realizing that happiness cannot be bought . It can only be found inside , no matter how many times you think you get it by buying new stuff. It's an inside job 💕
I embrace some aspects of minimalism, like being mindful with my spendings. I was never a collector of stuff and I prefer owning less but higher quality that will last for a long time. I spend more on travel and cultural events which nourish my soul, my knowledge and open my mind.
Love this video. I've been in an on and off effort of removing those things I no longer need or want. For different reasons. It helps to know I can make these decisions judgement free. Thank you!
I really hate having to have 2 different profiles of myself. I see who I want to be in my head( easy t-shirt, jeans, minimal makeup and jewelry) but the work me can't look like that. I'm not complaining. Just saying! Loved this video.
I have moved 5 times in 5 years each time I downsized. I am an aspiring minimalist. I began with a fairly uncluttered 1 bedroom flat. I now live in a single room. Unfortunately It still means it is very cramped. The local charity shop has got at least 15 bags of household and other items. People own more than they think.
a style or technique (as in music, literature, or design) that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity. That’s the official definition. Ten years ago I started exploring minimalism but found it to be a little contrived for my lifestyle. So I lean more toward seeking simplicity, KIS and the opposite law:the more you strive the less you achieve. The Buddhist concept of the middle way is a realistic compromise. But you have to call it want feels right for you.
Loved it! I am in my path and i am so happy. Started with capsule woredrobe (really like it) and adapting it to my life. I am not there jet but enyoing the tríp.
I doubt I would be considered as looking like a minimalist as I like books, arts and crafts and recently bought a lot of hair products (when I should, of course, have only one!!!). However, I also decluttered my books from 1100 down to 300, sold half my fabric stash, gave away 75% or more of my stationery etc, so I call myself a lot more minimalist than I used to be. If someone else who has no connection with or impact on my life disagrees, that's too bad - for them! ;)
The hyper-consumer culture has created this Overton-window, where people have redefined minimalism as middle-ground between average consumer behaviour and actual minimalism. If having 50 t-shirts is your normal level, 25 t-shirts would feel minimalist to you but it isn't actually minimalist.
Great video! I feel I’m leaning towards “mediumism”. I want to have things in my life, but I want them to be things I use. I’ve realized during the pandemic that many of my habits and hobbies (like shopping) just weren’t good for me. So I’m looking for things that are good for me and buying what I need to achieve them. For example, working out in VR makes me feel great, so if I work out and get sweaty everyday, then having enough sports bras to support that hobby makes sense to me.
Good take on the subject. Seems like most of what I hear about "minimalism" is all about stuff. I think it's really more about how cluttered your mind and your life are. Do you have a 12 piece wardrobe but a stressful life full of toxic relationships and a jam packed scheduled that doesn't allow you a minute to think? That's not minimalism.
@@Christinamychas don't worry, it's not you, they are very finicky and don't survive for too long in a regular home setting. If you want something tall and easy to care for - Ficus elastica or Schefflera might work. Anyway, love your chanel with whatever background 😂

100% Agree!!! 💐
Everyone's style of minimalism is unique!!!💝
💯!
Ahhh thank you for the feedback! No mrs trunchbull vibes intended 😭
It all starts with what 'I ' value ...has nothing to do with anyone else.
look how relaxed and secure you have become in front of the camera, speaking your mind! i preferred the sofa, more intimate and friend-like.
Like your take on minimalism. For me minimalism means being mindful of what I have, what I use, what brings me joy, declutter what's not fitting this criteria and not buying things that are not needed.
i loveeee the b roll in this vid. u did an amazing job
I love the new setup...very clean and professional looking. I always come and listen to you after bi ge watchi g on some of the most hoarder ish makeup influencers...like a cold shower. Love your wisdom...keep up the good work 🤗
🥰🥰🥰thank you!
makeup influencers are the worst!!
Your editing is the bomb👍🏼
😭😭😭 thank you for noticing!
Omg thank you! ❤️🎞
Thank you!
As you said both have some level of stress.
i like your new branding and totally support your minimalism journey.
Please just keep your style remain 'style apotheca' because i love your style :)
I don’t look like a minimalist, but I have been practicing it for about 3-4 years now. Thanks to Matt, lol. You took the words out of my mouth on what minimalism both is and isnt. This video was great!
This is one of the funniest, most intelligent talks I have heard on Minimalism.
I love the edit 💕
Minimalism is making room for what's important. It's clearing out the junk for the things you love. For me that's time, time with my family, to myself and less time cleaning.
Yes, I totally agree! For me, it’s about being intentional. I like to ask myself, when it comes to things, if the item is something I need/serves a purpose and if it sparks joy. ✨
Thank you for this video. I hate when people say that, for example, if you are a minimalist you have to wear neutral colour... why? I love your approach of minimalism! Hi from Italy
Your home decor are part of my minimalism goals
I feel your channel has helped me tremendously in the last month or so, so far this month I haven't bought or spent anything unnecessary, except like $1 for a coffee. I've been able to do my hobbies more and focus more on other things besides browsing amazon. I've also been able to declutter a bit and will donate once ontario lifts lockdowns. thank you tho, love from Hamilton
Love the background/set up.
I love your perspective on minimalism. I’m just starting my journey and I’m really excited and inspired by your content ✨
Absolutely loving the new setup! It’s very zen! (As I am enjoying your video while having a freshly brakes piece of Italian lemon cake)! Absolutely loved the information and perspectives in this video. ✨
The editing at 6:50 (stuff flying away) is really cool!
the beauty of minimalism is that everyone has their own unique definitions for it. and LOL at the biceps. Matt's biceps are not very minimalist though 😂
Maximalist gainz 💪
@@Christinamychas 😂😂😂
Some really interesting thoughts that I agree with, expectations really can make something that should make your life easier- harder.
Nailed it, Christina! Love your new background and the creativity in this video. Well done 👏👏👏
Yayyy thank you!
If they break they gone and no new toys unless is grooming day (the reward for doing what she hates the most on this world) which happens, maybe 3 times per year
Minimalism to me is keeping/buying/hoarding things you need. Hobby being an exception to the rule, indulge.
Your videos are the BEST! I completely agree that minimalism looks different for everyone.
For me, minimalism is realizing that happiness cannot be bought . It can only be found inside , no matter how many times you think you get it by buying new stuff. It's an inside job 💕
Very good points raised. 'Minimalism' should look different from one person to another.
I embrace some aspects of minimalism, like being mindful with my spendings. I was never a collector of stuff and I prefer owning less but higher quality that will last for a long time. I spend more on travel and cultural events which nourish my soul, my knowledge and open my mind.
This is such a necessary topic. I have yet to see anyone address this other than you. I love that you're on point without dragging the time. Bravo!
"it's not a race to the least" THANK YOU
*clings to all my paperbacks*
Love this video. I've been in an on and off effort of removing those things I no longer need or want. For different reasons. It helps to know I can make these decisions judgement free.
Thank you!
Loving your channel! ❤️ Also, would LOVE to see a home tour and see how you decorate minimalistic!
I really hate having to have 2 different profiles of myself. I see who I want to be in my head( easy t-shirt, jeans, minimal makeup and jewelry) but the work me can't look like that. I'm not complaining. Just saying! Loved this video.
Thanks so much for making it realistic and a reachable goal.
Woah! Name change! I love it!
Yay! Thank you!
Thanks for another great and refreshing video! Live the new set up 😀
I think you are so right! Love your videos Christina!!
I looove extreme minimalism! But I’m a minimalist. I don’t have excess but I love the idea of even less. Like Fumio. Love that idea!
I realise I am a true minimalist. And I can remember when I started becoming one. If something has no value in my life or in my home, it has to go.
Your setup is pretty! 😊
Oh so glad!! It’s more comfy to sit in a proper chair haha I kept sinking into my couch before 🤣 🛋
I have moved 5 times in 5 years each time I downsized. I am an aspiring minimalist. I began with a fairly uncluttered 1 bedroom flat. I now live in a single room. Unfortunately It still means it is very cramped. The local charity shop has got at least 15 bags of household and other items. People own more than they think.
You are killing it. Great job ❤️❤️❤️❤️👍
Deeply analized subject. Interesting thoughts. Best regards.
a style or technique (as in music, literature, or design) that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity.
Minimalism did enlighten ✨ my life = pure joy 💫
Love that!
Loved it! I am in my path and i am so happy. Started with capsule woredrobe (really like it) and adapting it to my life. I am not there jet but enyoing the tríp.
Loving the new set up but I also love your relaxed videos too!
If someone else who has no connection with or impact on my life disagrees, that's too bad - for them! ;)
this video was very well done and helped me a lot. Thank you
This was outrageously entertaining!!
The Middle Path....always the right way, but always the most difficult.
The hyper-consumer culture has created this Overton-window, where people have redefined minimalism as middle-ground between average consumer behaviour and actual minimalism. If having 50 t-shirts is your normal level, 25 t-shirts would feel minimalist to you but it isn't actually minimalist.
Thanks for this great overview.
Yessss love it!
"Mediumism". Excellent term - I love it!
I like your background. Thanks for another great video.
Great insight! Thank you!
As long as you have plants . Plants are important. Plants make me happy :) never too many
Living simply is the definition of minimalism
I don’t look like a minimalist but I do try to live a sustainable and intentional life. But I’m also married and my husband likes his stuff. 🤷🏽♀️
So sassy in this video. Enjoyed it💚
Good take on the subject.
I like the new set up, because I really dislike the fake fiddle leaf fig with the twinkle lights in the old background.
Haha I wish a real one would survive in my care 😭
@@Christinamychas don't worry, it's not you, they are very finicky and don't survive for too long in a regular home setting. If you want something tall and easy to care for - Ficus elastica or Schefflera might work. Anyway, love your chanel with whatever background 😂
