  • HIP HOP Fan REACTS To Bee Gees - Massachusetts BEE GEES REACTIONS
    "(The Lights Went Out In) Massachusetts" is a song by the Bee Gees, released in 1967. Written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb. Robin Gibb sang lead vocals on this song and it would become one of his staple songs to perform during both Bee Gees concerts and his solo appearances. It later appeared on their 1968 album, Horizontal.

    What reactions should I do to The Bee Bees?

    • @frodeapeland1442
      @frodeapeland1442 3 года назад +5

      There are so many good Bee Gees songs to react to. These are some of the biggest songs from the later years (87-01): You Win Again, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Wish You Were Here, Wedding Day, Closer Than Close (Maurice), Alone and This Is Where I Came In. I would love to see a reaction to one of these songs.

    When Robin would sing this in concerts Barry would step back and sometimes turn his back to the audience so Robin would get all the attention. The camera always seems to favor Barry so Barry made sure to step away and turn his back so the camera would feature mostly Robin. Robin usually does something similar when Barry sings "Words".

    They weren't doing a"back and forth" on that second verse. Robin was still singing lead, Barry was just supporting his lead on that second verse. When they sang together on a lead, it made a whole other voice. It was pretty cool. Their voices were similar and yet so different individually. Yet when they both sang a lead together, it made this other beautiful voice!!

      The BeeGees had many voices that's what made them interesting, you had each individual brother with their own unique sound and then you had various combinations of two of them or all three, I honestly think that it would have been even more impressive if Andy had joined them. It was said that he was invited to join his brothers as an official BeeGee but he passed away before he had the chance, it's sad I'm sure they would have made some amazing songs together.

    This was a hit in the sixties pre disco era.

  • @llschnitz
    @llschnitz 3 года назад +11

    This is OLD Bee Gees, but performed twenty years later. A hit in 1966. They only wrote it because there was a fascination with America among the British; they liked writing about anything to do with America. Thought it was romantic just like Americans write about Rome or Paris France. In the mid-sixties, The Bee Gees topped the charts with ballads and love songs like this one. This IS a song from the sixties, but you're seeing it performed in the late eighties. In the early seventies, they did love songs like "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart". Then in the mid seventies, it was funky r&b like "Nights on Broadway". This evolved into the disco music of the "Saturday Night Fever" era. So they have at least four different stages to their careers. Listen to the original version from 1966.

    • @dp3396
      @dp3396 3 года назад +1

      Maybe 1st stage is Australia 1960-1966
      2nd stage: UK and internationally 1967-breakup
      3rd stage: 1970-1973 Comeback with HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART, LONELY DAYS, RUN TO ME
      4th stage: Miami, USA reinvention 1974-1979 (which Robin joked is sometimes referred to as the helium years)
      5th stage: Songwriters for others after being written off as only a 70’s Disco Group
      6th stage: Post-Disco beginning in 1987 with YOU WIN AGAIN, gaining respect when they became (I believe I’m remembering this correctly) the first group and songwriters to have a #1 hit in 4 decades in a row, then in 5 decades in the 90’s when Islands In the Stream was covered by a couple of comedians for charity

      They had 5 decades of music you can react to. They wrote and produced almost all of their own music for all of those decades. They successfully wrote and produced music for their much younger brother Andy Gibb and other very successful artists! There are so many great songs beyond just their hits. Another reactor Chad Summers has done nearly 1000 Bee Gees reactions.He does such a wonderful job.He has Bee Gees weekends where he does reaction videos to 4 of their songs. The Bee Gees music is one very deep rabbit hole!!!

    Masachussets
    is the first #1 to youngest Bee Gees in UK (1967, the same year when "Sgt Peppers" album by BEATLES was realized)
    This song is so special, Robin takes the leads, some kind of magic and feelings and emotions exploted with Robin's unique and angelical voice
    I can suggest another songs from the earlies 60/70s:
    I've gotta get a message to you
    I've started a joke
    I saw a new morning
    How can you mend a broken heart
    Lonely days

    I know you said that the disco era was awesome. But the Bee Gees have been singing since the 60s and they are famous for a lot more than the disco part of it that was only maybe three years of their careers. They’ve been singing since the sixties to 70s the 80s and even into the 90s these guys are 40+ years old with their music and it never gets old they are the most awesome group in the world in my opinion.

    This is actually an older song from the early 70's. All the brothers had certain songs they sang lead in. This was always a Robin song. Another of his is, "I started a Joke", Maurice is often overlooked because he didn't make waves about needing to be the featured singer, but jas a wonderful voice as well. Some of his songs are, "Man in the Middle", "Closer than Close", "Wildflower",
    Some of their latest songs they did before Maurice died are, "One", "I Could Not Love You More", "You Win Again", "For Whom The Bell Tolls" among many others

    It was just about a guy who left his girl in Massachusetts, Fabian........He went to San Francisco where the hippies were, the summer of love..1969...to be with the hip people that swept the world! Haight Ashbury was the place where all the youth of the word went to ...hippies! It was The SUMMER OF LOVE, flowers in your hair...free love. Everyone wanted to go there. He missed his gal, and when the lights went out in his life, he realized his place was in Massachusetts.

    They wrote the song while on tour in the states at the Regis Hotel in New York. This is what they said about it. It was supposed to be the antithesis to flower power anthems of the time such as “ Lets go to San Francisco” and “ San Francisco ( Be Sure To Wear Flowers in your Hair)” in that the protagonist had been to San Francisco to join the hippies but was now homesick. The idea behind the line “The lights have gone out in Massachusetts” suggested everyone had gone to San Francisco.

  • @dp3396
    @dp3396 3 года назад +2

    They said the general rule was that whoever brought the song in sang the lead. With MASSACHUSETTS, Rob and Mo were in the hotel room playing around with Robin doing a Tom Jones or some other US singer’s voice, and their manager stuck his head in the door and said, “Record that.” (Many of their songs had humorous beginnings.) They finished and recorded the music, then words, in the studio with Barry. ...so, because the song was originally Robin’s inspiration, he’s singing lead. More than it being a general business rule to help keep peace between the brothers, in my opinion, Robin’s voice is usually best for the songs he sings lead on, and Barry’s for his. If you hear them switch off on verses, then they probably were together when the song was born. I’ve read that management might say to go back and add harmonies, and also that Barry would sometimes write for Robin’s voice, but the “general rule” is usually true, and is said to have been the source of intense competition. Barry just recently said that, after their first big #1 featured Robin’s lead, Robin thought that he should sing all leads, eventually leading to their breakup. This is my take... When his solo career didn’t take off, a more humble (and mature) Robin came back to the group. Keep in mind that Robin and Maurice were only 17 when they had that first big international hit, and only 19 when they broke up. They all grew up a lot during the breakup. This laid the groundwork for Robin to be able to accept Barry’s falsetto dominance while it lasted, and Barry being sensitive to the need to promote both of his brothers and their gifts to this day. Gotta keep the ego in check. They were each great, but greater together.

    • @dp3396
      @dp3396 3 года назад +1

      @@susieq9801 I read my comments back to try to see where I may have triggered your defense of Robin, and trashing of Barry. The only thing I can see is my saying that Robin returned to the group “when his solo career didn’t take off.” If I knew how to edit it, I would. It was not intended in any way to slight Robin. None of their solo careers took off, and they all came back together more, mature, wise, humble, and respectful of each other.
      This is a sincere question... Was Robin “frequently overlooked,” or was he perhaps jealous of the attention Barry received? He said he left because he felt Stigwood was favoring Barry, and not just over which song would be the A-side single. Stigwood highly praised Barry in an interview for his ability to custom write for anyone. Stigwood also took Barry to LA where he received some acting offers, and took only Barry to meet Otis Redding to discuss writing for him. Was Stigwood playing favorites, or did Barry perhaps have some songwriting skill apart from his brothers? Why shouldn’t it be acknowledged? If it were Robin being praised for a special gift that Barry didn’t have, would you object? Robin absolutely deserves all of the attention he gets, but so do Barry and Mo. Yes, even Barry deserves the credit he gets, including for his falsetto. No, he may not be perfect, but neither were Robin or Maurice. They are all wonderful and talented individuals, and it’s OK that each (even Barry) be loved. The problem seems to be because Barry really does get more attention than Robin or Mo, especially by fans of their 1975-1979 music. Why can’t you graciously allow Barry his attention, too?
      When Robin left The Bee Gees, he came off as petty, immature, insecure, jealous, narcissistic.., all traits understandable and quite typical for a still very young suddenly internationally famous pill-popping super star. There are lots of stories of music groups breaking up over ego, often turning on the most successful member. It says a lot for all three of the Gibbs - yes, even for Barry - that they figured out how to manage to defy the odds and stay together, because they were better together.
      To be fair to Maurice and Barry, maybe one of the reasons Robin had the first solo success was because Barry and Maurice continued as The Bee Gees for a time. Also, I’ve read that Maurice helped Robin with what became his first solo material, originally intended to be for the next Bee Gees album, but was not acknowledged in the credits. If that is true, then Robin’s first “solo” success was not completely “solo.” How did Barry and Maurice’s DON’T FORGET TO REMEMBER do in the charts, and how did it compare with SAVED BY THE BELL?
      A key point to remember about this period is that they were all three still under contract with Stigwood for about 2 years more, so Robin’s solo career was partially, and rightly so, held back while terms of his going solo were negotiated. Also, the brothers said the record executives scuttled Cucumber Castle and all of their solo attempts, not just Robin’s. Yes, the music business is a dirty business, but they ultimately conquered it. It’s part of why their story is so fascinating and inspirational.
      Overall, your comments make me sad. Kinda reminds me of the stories of people whispering negative and divisive things in their ears about their siblings that caused them to break up. In the words of Vince Malorney, “SUCH A SHAME!”
      I have never seen any source that said that “Barry took over” the projects for Streisand, etc. Please site yours. I mean that sincerely. I would really like to know.
      When was Islands In The Stream ever “mainly Robin’s song?” His studio version wasn’t even recorded until 2001. Yes, it was recorded for their greatest hits album, but Robin’s version was never a hit version. The 1983 Rogers-Parton cover version was the hit. Barry sings the demo version, and all of the Bee Gees concert videos that I’ve ever seen have Barry on lead. Other than at one of Robin’s solo concerts, when did he ever sing the lead?
      Barry didn’t say that he was estranged from his brothers. I believe he said that he wasn’t in the best place with any of them when they died. He recently said that he and Robin had disagreed about whether they should continue recording together as Bee Gees without Maurice.He didn’t think it was a good idea, but Robin desperately wanted to continue. In hindsite, he realizes that Robin probably knew he was sick, which would explain his desire. With Andy, it had to do with his addiction, including to alcohol, and because they had been advised to have tough love. I lost an addicted brother the year after Andy died. I guess you can say that our family wasn’t on the best of terms with him when he died, but that’s not the same as saying that it was our fault. My parents were following the professionals’ advise, too. We will forever live with that, and so will Barry. Anyone who has experienced such loss knows that those left behind typically question what they could have done differently, and deal with regrets. I did not interpret Barry’s statement in the same way that you did, but maybe that’s because I’ve had a similar experience.Have you ever heard Barry, or anyone close to them who would know, say why they weren’t on the best of terms? If so, please provide your source so we can all know what you think you do. If not, I think it’s wrong to assume that Barry was saying that it was his fault. Families are more complicated than that, and your comment is just heartless, judgemental and insensitive.
      I love Robin’s vibrato, but it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. And, if you’re honest, you have to admit there is some less than flattering information about Robin out there. Would you appreciate those things showing up in comments? I’m sorry if what I said seemed critical of Robin. It really wasn’t intended to be. Please read my original reply as a whole. I don’t believe it favors one brother at another’s expense. I love them all. Please let up on Barry!
      Reaction videos are intended to be fun!!!
      Why not let it go and just enjoy the music?

      @@susieq9801 So, no sources to back up your previous biased claims? No links of Robin singing “Islands” and making it a hit before Barry so rudely took it away from him? Didn’t think so. Just more hate that’s not worth a response. “Such A Shame!”

      @@dp3396 - Oh poor, poor pitiful you. I've been a fan since 1967, have followed them since, seen dozens of interviews and read their bios. I guess the bios and interviews by the members themselves and knowledgeable others are not sources.
      I NEVER said Robin made "Islands" a hit. You're reading comprehension is lacking and your own bias evident. Rogers and Parton did but once it became a hit it was sung in concert by Barry while on their greatest hits by Robin. Why the switch? Songwriting credits went to all three but Rogers said "Barry gave me the song". Was he there when the song was written?
      Barry is IMO deceptive. The lie about not knowing Robin was ill until he saw a photo is a glaring one. NOBODY takes a photo to their doctor to ask about a brother on the other side of the Atlantic. There's this fancy invention called a phone. Barry was interviewed on CBS Sunday Morning WITH Robin and even then it was obvious to a blind man that Robin was dying. Furthermore, in an interview RJ was angry because he said he phoned Barry well before PLUS his mother and sister knew a year before. Good enough sources?
      It has been stated by the performers themselves that The Bee Gees, not just Barry, were asked to produce albums for others. They also contributed songs. All three sang backup on "Immortality" for example.
      I don't hate anyone but feel the Bee Gees have become "The Barry Gibb Show" and that is disgusting. Now he's rehashing songs that were perfect in the first place. Why? The artists themselves could do that. Perhaps release those never released or remaster them.
      The fact remains that Barry admits he was not on good terms with all three brothers when they died. I guess they were all to blame and he was blameless.
      I'll delete my remarks so you can sleep well tonight. Poor dear.

    It's been the 'Flower-Power' time. Yaknow hippies were on the way to California. Music's been dominated by songs like 'San Francisco' or 'California Dreaming'. The state of Massachusetts is on the eastcost. The boys were reflecting about, what the hell should those people do: "Try to hitch a ride to San Francisco" and in the chorus: 'And the lights, all went out in Massachusetts". They were/are masters of songwriting. Only needed snippets to create songs, that forever will stand the test of time.

    I think you should do another one of these but compare their How do you mend a Broken Heart with Al Green’s cover! Both are so amazing yet so different! Also I think I remember Robin saying his idea for the song had nothing to do with Massachusetts itself, it was the word and how it sounded and how many syllables it has. It filled out the song and was recognizable to a lot of fans. Also I’ve Just Gotta Get a Message to You really shows Robin’s gifts!

Pay close attention especially at the end, because Robin sings the high notes as much as Barry. Another great song is The New York Mining Disaster. Because your interest if you watch an interview Michael Parkinson interview them in the video where they are you get and you see them with guitars. Since you like disco, Barry does lead more of those, but they all take the lead quite a bit over the years. Barry did not write all the songs. They wrote them together.

      They have different vocals. Barry has an amazing ability to switch from his falsetto to his wonderful chest voice. I think it is unfair to say one's vocals are better than the other's. They all contributed to their phenomenal career. Their individual voices were so different, but they all contributed to that amazing 3 part harmony.Whoever had primarily written the song, sang the lead.

      Hi Laurie, listen, I think you have the right to your own opinions. I know a lot of people who loved Barry’s vocals and I like them but I personally believe Robin had the best vocals of all them. I get that you may not think that’s fare and I should treat them as a whole. Even doing that….Robin still has the better vocals for me. No disrespect to your opinion.
