I never thought I would have to abandon my home, but I live a 2 blocks from where George Floyd was killed, and my neighborhood became a war zone.
I was on the phone with my adult son in another state and admitted I was terrified. 20 minutes later his local friends showed up and began boarding up my windows.
I called my homeowner’s insurance to let them know I was planning to evacuate and I felt so supported by the woman I talked to. She had me walk through my home and video everything before I left.
Luckily, my home was intact when I returned 4 days later, but I still have the boards stored in my garage just incase I need them again.

As I am preparing for a uncertain time I remember what my mother in law who lived through the great depression and World War 2 told me. She said times were tough they didn't have much but they made due. She said that they spent a lot of time standing in line for handouts but she said they always made time for fun mostly playing cards. So as I prepare with food and other essentials I also have a tote with fun stuff. I believe her words then are still true today. She and her family made it through and and so shall we.

I used to play the matching card game with my children when they were small. Remove the face cards and only play with one deck of ace through 10. The normal games build memory skills, but when they seem to be getting pretty good at that I upped the ante and they can only take the match if the can count out the symbols on both cards (i.e. two 7s then they need to count to 14 correctly.). Other variations are playing “war” and they learn less than greater than. Once they master that, they only win the cards if they can tell me what they add up to. Once they master that we move to subtraction and then multiplication. They get to have fun and they learn a lot of basic match. They have 10 seconds to come up with the right answer.
Just thought I would throw that out there if you have young children in your group. For you adults and older kids, learn canasta (takes multiple decks), it’s fun. Or consider getting poker chips and learning how to play various poker games. Dice for Yahtzee works too - just need 5 dice and you can make your own scorecards if needed.

My car was full!!! in the past this person ,bout every six weeks, leaves all kinds of things 2 or 3 boxes full even rice and canned fruits.!!! . I hav even gotten a few keystone type canned beefs and porks. No clue what they actually will eat. Off brands but still good food not even expired. And i hav left these boxes overnite at mailboxes and no one else takes them. Dont kno who leaves this stuff either. Im very happy to take it before it gets rained or snowed on!!!!! We're in a low-risk for floods, wildfires, etc & are not in a big city (bigger than I would like, but you do what you can). Hubby & I both work from home, so it makes the most sense for them to leave the cities & come here. A few years ago we put together bug-out/get-home bags for all of them for Christmas & we've all had multiple discussions of what to do if something happens.

We can quickly stuff baggies of kibble and water bottles in the pouches and attach her bowls to it and she can carry some of her own stuff if she needs to. (She wears a harness when she runs errands so she’s used to putting them on.)
As for knowing phone numbers, years ago we had a parrot in the animal rescue I volunteered at. Since she could tell the dogs to be quiet and also sound just like the microwave, she was being taught to say the name of the rescue in case she ever got lost.

Good morning, I run a small cat sanctuary for special need, birth defects, senior and others. Basically the ones that are not adoptable or are older and need a soft spot to land. Been around over 30 years. How I am trying to get ready for possible trouble is: put back extra RX foods, canned food, getting extra meds for the cats is very hard to do. Getting an extra box in each size of the potty pads we use every order. Buying an extra of all the cleaning supplies, laundry supplies when we get them on sale for next year, All our properties are paid for. Donations are way down; so that does make me nervous, We have our firewood for the season and starting to get for next year. We have a 250 gallon rain barrel, trying to get more water in; I do get push back from some of my board tho on trying to get things in that are needed. I just try to work around them. I truly appreciate all of your videos and words of wisdom. Because of you I have started pressure canning, I already dehydrate and water bath canning.

Thanks for the recommendation of a book, I’m adding it to my library book checkout list & will search once the video is over. Several years ago when FEMA changed the flood maps from rising water levels on SF Bay impacting many communities around the Bay. We got our city to pass a bond to update both drinking water treatment & wastewater treatment plants so they won’t be affected. Now the update construction 🚧 is almost completed.

Every summer where I live we have to prepare for fires. Last year my town was on fire and my section was the only area not on alert or evacuated. I have PTSD from this. It terrifies me so I load my car with cases of water, my suitcase is packed. I have 3 cat carriers on my kitchen table ready to go, food, toiletries, can opener, cutlery, plates, sleeping bag, camp stove etc. Look up Mcdougall Creek fire. Many houses were burned to the ground. It's not where is the fire but when. Hot, sunny days don't mean go to the beach to me, but wonder where the fire is going to be. Add a bunch of arsonists who get off on this, and it's not a fun time.

We are in NW LOUISIANA and we only got hard rain and some wind ALTHOUGH many, many people from South Louisiana came to our area for safety. LSU Shreveport is where we helped out and animals were welcome to come. The local animal shelters, rescues and foster homes all took care of animals. Some animals were in kennels on site and some people allowed their pets to go with rescue & fostering families. If anyone should be called on to help others in any situation, disposible diapers & wipes were a HUGE and constant necessity. So much food and water came from churches and local restaurants. Some pediatricians bought a bunch of kids toys (for the parents LOL)!!! I would imagine colleges in most places would be helpful since most have space.

Leisa you mentioned making arrangements for pets and in your list you said boarding facilities. Depending on the emergency, I don’t recommend that because when push comes to shove, no one will care for your pet(s) like you will. What if that facility becomes later impacted. I wouldn’t trust them to care for and save my dogs. Food we have covered (for us and for our dogs). Actually have our dogs covered better than we are LOL but I really do worry about having enough water.
I assume on a daily basis basis / per person
    Drinking water - 1 gal.
Bathing - 2-3 gal. (guys less, ladies with long hair more)
Cooking / cleanup needs - 2 gal. depending on size of group.
Laundry - I can’t even begin to imagine what a group would need for laundry.

Well the last 48 hours has been an eye opener. We had a wild storm with a microburst tornado come touched down in my town. Lots of trees and electrical wires down - no power for most of the town!!! I have 3 upright freezers filled. I told my husband dont open the refrigerator or freezers - if kept closed food will stay frozen for 48 hours. So for lunch today my husband asked what's for lunch since we can't open the refrig. I said SERIOUSLY??? I have a 6 month supply of food. I said start with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and have a can of fruit with it. Mind you I have dried fruits and nuts/ granola bars/ protein bars/ various fresh and canned fruit. We have trail mix, popcorn, chips & salsa. Crackers and tuna/ chicken. The problem is it wasn't what he "was in the mood for". Again... Seriously??? I saw my weak spot....I need to start to empty the freezer and preserve that stuff by canning it so it is shelf stable.I don't want to risk losing all that food if we don't have power. Wake up call and I have my work cut out for me.

You talk about home pets, we live in a high fire area with lots of ranching, moving a herd of cows and horses is no small feat, especially when they're highly agitated by the smoke. Know who has extra or large cattle trailers close to you that may be able to help you. We've had cowboys herding livestock down the highways to safer ground. Know the roads they may need to use, because they don't move fast. In our area they open the fairgrounds, and all available rodeo grounds, for large animals.

Have a photograph showing you with your pet: scammers were showing up looking for purebred dogs and trying to claim them, so they started asking for more proof of ownership like a picture.

I have plenty of canning equipment if we ever do. We got our first 4 chicks in the spring. We have bee hives but they rarely thrive. We live near a river, we have a wood stove and plenty to burn. We have a gas generator and extra gas. We have cash, lots of protection and I collect books on survival skills, foraging and natural remedies. I plan to bug in. There's so much more I'd like to get and do but time and money are tight.
