Join Bryce and Misty Murph'Ariens for a look into managing snow and wind through applied permaculture techniques. Walk through a snow filled food forest, and experience first hand the benefits and effects of these systems in action. Learn how to plant trees and shrubs to protect you, (and them), from the complications of snow load. Learn what types of trees and shrubs work best in wind hedges. See what plants Bryce and Misty used in their zone 5b Ontario food forest to control the snow and wind coming from the neighbouring field. Understand how the shape of a fence will modify these effects, and see how a sturdy fence can serve as support for growing hedge plants. Witness firsthand how these techniques can control snow accumulation, and can keep the areas around homes (and other areas) almost completely clear of snow.

Greetings neighbors, We are in very windy industrial agricultural region of Mid Michigan. So timely information, thank you for sharing. I am Researching ways to slow the westerly winter wind. This is a little complicated as we want the sheltering blanket of snow but it is a problem digging out of it. I’ve noticed the big barn is warmest when the snow drifts up against it. There is a smaller barn to be cleaned up and built out for chickens and sheep. I’ve thought to stack straw or hay bales around the inside perimeter to help insulate, as it would only mold if placed on the outside perimeter. Can you offer your experience or point me to a source for good information please? Warm regards, Lynn
