    I think the building code regulations should be expanded to include proven worthy safe builds. But there are many good reasons the codes are what they are. I'm not sure I understand the nature of the predicament. You didn't buy land you just made a permanent shelter somewhere?

    • @ontariopermaculture3665
      @ontariopermaculture3665 3 месяца назад

      @@fantasyflare I quite agree that the codes should be updated to allow for traditional techniques and non-toxic materials. Our situation is a bit unique. We did purchase our property. We inquired as to the need for permits, but got feedback from the building official at the time that seemed to allow what we were doing (small/natural/DIY). We were well known about in the township for many years and the home was accepted. Then, nine years later, the township was gentrifying and there was a new inspector hired. He took a different view, and ordered us to make a retroactive application.

    Thanks for bringing attention to opening the senses. Integrating morning light for circadian rhythms and sun for Vitamin D and IR effects has me doing this daily. Another little used touch aspect is to eat (usually fruits) with out your hands. Eating mulberries or autumn olives off the trees with just your mouth brings in a large set of unused proprioceptic and mouth feedback. It seems you do a fair bit of research on your topics. While not mentioned as an aspect of naked gardening, it stands to reason that a short dose of sun over full body (nakedish)>long dose on a few skin patches (clothedish). (Better Vitamin D/IR benefit to cancer risk ratio) I haven't been able to find supporting research on this. Have you?

    Thank you for presenting a temperate chinampas example. I am starting something similar in much deeper water and in the same growing zone. Of course it brings up many questions: 1. Being zone 5, you get freezing weather. Any observations on freeze/thaw cycle effects? 2. Assuming you were going to create chinampas in much deeper water, there would be much more mass involved. What have you found to be an optimum width? The narrower, the smaller the ratio of erodable edge to growing space. Too wide and the centre may not get the chinampas benefits. Presumably something like 1m either side of a 1m path (to accomodate wheel barrows) for a 9m wide chinampas. 3. I didn't notice specific soil holding plants on the edges like willow/alder. But if you did use things to defend the erodeable edge, how do you balance the need for them to thrive, but also not to shade out your food crops in the centre of the chinampas? 4. Given the high humidity, have you tried integrating mushroom logs? 5. Given most of your swamp water likely comes off of other properties, how do you manage the uncertainty of neighbours dumping chemicals in their waterways and it flowing to you? 6. While wood under water can last centuries, wet wood in air will decay. Have you experience/recommendations on post wood for the edges? I don't have access to black locust or osage orange.

      @@SeekingBeautifulDesign Great questions. For the size, we make the main beds wider, with smaller tributaries. We use a willow withe basket weave for edges. Sometimes the willow stakes will root, sometimes not. We do tend to let the already existing high zones dictate the layout, so we basically lay our beds from willow tree to willow tree. The water flow is not very great here, so erosion is not as much aof an issue as with more water volume and flow. We have not observed any issues with freeze/thaw, but have observed that frosts come much later to the chinampas, and the water holds on to warmth longer. It also thaws sooner in spring, giving the chinampas a slightly longer growing season (great for tomatoes).

    • @ontariopermaculture3665

      The willows that grow on the edges get pruned for future edges, keeping the foliage low for the crops.

      As to contamination, we know it does contain road and farm runoff. It is still the best growing area we have, considering the amount of contamination sources, as the water there is always being actively filtered, whereas our upland crops have direct runoff from agriculture.

    Brings perspective to the issue when you mention how many homeless we have in Canada. Crazy big numbers. The system's values are totally backwards. They're wasting everyone's time. A bit of time reading about and then seeing myself, the practicality and efficiency of cob construction (and non-toxicity), is what I hope everyone who is currently-uninformed on the issue realises. More people should start building with it. I know I want to. The structural fortification is unparalleled in modern architecture. The protection from nature's elements is a testiment to natural building materials. Some unfortunate weather-mishaps like tornadoes and hurricanes may not be of relevance to Ontario specifically, but to homeowners elsewhere on Turtle Island, it would be. I really hope this video reaches the people who are persecuting you. Your story of dealing with the "Affordable/Attainable Housing Committee" was good to share. Displays how they value manmade regulations & money, rather than what they claim (in the name.) I foresee homeless individuals being given their own plots of land with tools needed to build their own homes and communities. Giving the homeless an opportunity to start their life again would take a burden off of government services. The reliance of Canadians upon government's branches (money-granting, funding services, etc.) will dissolve. Essentially the loaning of land and opportunity is what happened a few centuries ago with the (then homeless) immigrants from France and Britain. People were more tough back then, yet they seemed to get on just fine, minus construction technologies and knowledge we are blessed with today (geothermal, solar energy, etc.) I reckon there is only the issue of explaining to some homeless folks why it's more rewarding to build your own house, rather than get it built for you. Of course, there is also a large percentage of homeless people who need serious healing, years of care to be properly rehabilitated. The treatment centers will function better anyway, when they'll be built with natural elements in mind, literally built into the building. Also, couldn't be a better time to drop the video. I was so zoned into the greater issue at hand, that I was visualising Misty's speech as being given within the courtroom, with witnesses in the crown present. When the music came in at 18:43 it snapped me back to reality. I'm just glad to be alive for this time. There really is a lot being brought to light within these organizations. In the courtrooms and offices it will be increasingly obvious to each side, of "who's on which side." So, thanks for being fundamental catalysts towards this. Peace and Love, Nam Rajdeep Singh

    Well said Misty and Bryce - fantastic to get this update! I think of you all the time and google to see what’s happening… Thank you for doing this very difficult job on behalf of so many Canadians who are blatantly ignored and actively excluded from their rightful place in society and certainly are not a priority concern of this supposedly advanced G20 nation (that can afford to send billions out of the country to support the war industry, for example, but choose not to care for their own ppl) and for so many other corrupt and unjust reasons too numerous to mention here… There couldn’t be a better couple to stand up with bright minds and warm hearts to cut through the lack of basic decency in the Canadian government, at all levels. These ppl can only be named for what they are - bad-actors who are only “following orders” - and history shows us that they must be stopped and the charter is meant to protect us from those who have lost the priority and balance to treat others fairly and decently and deny their rights and even abuse them instead. Sadly, so many Canadians no longer have a heart for those less-fortunate and they also lost a sense for the truth of what right-action and ethics look like in every detail of life and they hide behind very outdated, exclusive and unethical bylaws, codes and frankly, extremely-limiting rules, norms and ways of thinking that not only leave so many outside the circle of inclusion and care but they abuse and deny basic rights and therefore true justice to a hoard of people that we can all see growing on the streets and in tents, with many more unseen in cars and in the bush… Wake up Canada and deal with the real issues underlying homelessness, health and sustainable living - many simple and affordable solutions do exist and we must allow ppl to implement them and stop blocking progress! I greatly hope and pray that the charter comes through for you and so many others who also matter and do indeed have the right to a safe home that they can afford, a home that is in keeping with values of ecological sustainability and their need to live in a healthy, non-toxic space that they can affordably maintain with animals that help them to have this security and comfort. Many blessings to you!
