Maples, pines, rhododendrons and azaleas are good advice. Bamboo is a risky choice, for the rest better buy a descent book on Japanese gardening.

I have a Japanese garden with lots of bamboo, why do you think " it's a risky choice"

@@sherrie1686 hi, several kinds of bamboo form roots that are hard to contain. I have a bush ot bamboo which I encapsulated in 60 cm deep hard plastic, but it still krept out and now it has formed three meter long roots in every direction through my other plants and my dry pond. I cut shoots every month but they keep coming in ever greater numbers. In the end I will have to completely dig out about fifteen square meters of soil thereby killing the bamboo and all other plants (which I clipped and shaped over many years) - and ruining my dry pond. The soil overhere is very compact, so digging up the bamboo roots and the rest of the plants would be e real hell of a job.

Cut it down to the ground and stay on top of knocking down every shoot that comes up. The rhizome will die and you won't have to dig.

Would love to see each plant from a bit of distance to see how it would look in the garden, not just up close.

I have and I do worry about it, I used 2 plastic trash cans, one inside the other with large holes cut in the bottom, buried it to the upper rim. It has 8 large shoots that are 12 to 15 feet high. Been there for 8 years now and has not yet escaped.
