      I think she dodged a bullet. Imagine taking a woman that you broke up with twice to court for a ring that she already gave you more than what it was worth. I'd lose my mind.

    She kept $1000 for her OWN RING. Everyone at that jewelry store screwed that poor guy.

    • @Aussiesuede
      @Aussiesuede Месяц назад

      Yep, by her logic when he purchased them a house she would have said "I did all the searching for the house and all he did is pay for it so it's really MY house and he should be happy that I offered to give him anything" Instead of saving him $1000 on the ring she wanted she instead pocketed a thousand dollars of his money. That's next level usury...

    • @jessicaarmstrong5035
      @jessicaarmstrong5035 Месяц назад +1

      Or he screwed her over. Keep in mind that he broke up with her twice. Not once while he was with her after she sold the ring did he mention her paying the $2700. This was a bogus judgment.

    • @Aussiesuede

      @jessicaarmstrong5035 it's no different than when an employer gives yo a laptop to use.v it's not a gift to you. It's only for you use whist you are employed. If your boss suspends you then later decided to continue to employ you,. That laptop doesn't suddenly become Your property. It is only for your use whilst you are employed with that company. A ring is no different. It's for a prospective WIFE. IF YOU are no longer a wife, then the property provided ONLY for that reason goes back to it's legal owner. That ring is put on a specific finger of a specific person to signify to the world that that person is married and no longer on the open market. When that person returns to the open market after a marriage, then that property no longer retains any value since that person is no longer in a relationship with the property owner.
      Why on earth would anyone want to retain product that's express purpose was to signal they were tied to the specific person who provided the signal of a specific relationship? An anniversary GIFT is just that, a gift. A ring is NOT a gift. It's a symbol of attachment to the person who requested a monogamous relationship. Ending the relationship ends the purpose of the ring since you are no longer part of the relationship it's ONLY purpose was to signify.

    She sold that ring for more than they paid for it because she got a great deal. She worked in that business, and that ring was worth way more than 7,700.

    • @shendisackett
      @shendisackett Месяц назад +5

      Yes it was worth $10,000 as they said, a standard discount for people working in the jewellery business is 30%. So she would likely have sold it for at least $9000. She should have just returned the ring, although she is correct he wouldn't have been able to get more than $4000 for it if he sold it back to a store.

      @@shendisackett No she specifically said here that she got $7000 for it, not $10K or $9000. And yes she's right that he wouldn't have been able to get more than $4000 for it. You can't get brand new pricing for a ring that you used. She wore the ring and thus it was a used ring. Even if it was worth $10K the most he would've gotten was $3333, about 1/3 of the price. Her giving him $5000 was more than fair. I can't believe JJ did this. The defendant should appeal.

    As I thought, she had all kinds of excuses, ranging from giving a kickback to what he'd get if he sold it on consignment to her time and effort getting the ring.
    But the one I absolutely believe was the primary motive was when she claimed "he hurt her" by calling off the engagement.
    It's not a legal defense.
    I think looking back at this, both parties will agree that not getting married was one of the best decisions of their lives.

I think she probably managed to get around $9k for it, if she's a good saleswoman. She is right though that if he had sold the ring to a jewellery store he would be lucky to get $4k, and it would probably be less. He should have been given the full purchase price back though. I own my own condo, and I have two cases coming up. One for 5K against my strata for 8 months of an unresolved matter against another owner's tenant, which is the max allowed in that jurisdiction which is decided by an arbitrator, and one for 8K against the other owner in small claims in front of a judge, where the max is 35K. I am asking for one thousand per month. The strata told me I can't sue them both, I have to resolve the matter through arbitration only. Which is BS, I can sue both separately. There is nothing in strata bylaws saying I can't go outside to solve an issue. (I have already gotten the violator evicted, they are moving out the end of Dec 2024) Now I am seeking compensation for the last nine months. If you have an unresolved matter, and you are going to go to litigation learn the laws, don't depend on anyone else telling you what you can and can't do. And don't get your advice from a newspaper help column like this genius. Talk to a lawyer. I had two free consults with two real lawyer, one for each case. Looked like the guy wanted to argue about the amount Judge Judy awarded him. Probably the other $700. Neither of them was a prize. They both definitely thought highly of themselves.

    I don’t understand the logic here… jj keeps emphasizing on the fact that she sold the ring for less than what he paid but then turns around and awards him LESS money than what he paid.
    I don’t know jack ish about jewelry but am I wrong to think you’re not going to get the same value for something you paid that is now used?

    I don't like this judgment. So here's the thing. She gave him $5000. He cashed the $5000. At no point did he say to her that $5000 wasn't good enough and he wanted more. And in fact, even after that he stayed with her for another year. If he wanted the $2700 then why didn't he say anything to her? Furthermore, let's say they were in court for the ring that he gave to her but she never gave him the $5000. Judge Judy is only allowed to give $5000. If the defendant hadn't given him the $5000 cheque, she would only owe him $5000 as per Judge Judy's rules. So why does she now have to pay more than what Judge Judy would be allowed to make a judgment for? If I were the defendant, I'd appeal this ruling. It's been more than 2 years, she's already paid him $5000, and it was a gift. You can't make a person pay for a gift because there's no mention of paying him back at any time. He doesn't get to change his mind 2 years later because things didn't work out.

    "He hurt me" is not a legal defense. I have to say it's nice that she gave him $5.000 - she could've just kept and let him to take her to court - but really, she should've given him the ring back. But I'll be the first to say that I don't know how it works; does it matter who initiated the break-up? Is there any truth to what she said, that since he broke up with her, she could keep the ring?
