- The 1960s were the golden age of muscle cars, with many models boasting over 300 horsepower. The variety of these vehicles was vast, from compact coupes to luxury cars. The muscle car’s roots can be traced back to the 1930s and 1940s when moonshiners would modify their cars for more power, which also led to the creation of NASCAR. By the mid-1960s, the muscle car era was in full swing, with the 1964 Plymouth Barracuda and the 1964½ Ford Mustang leading the way. Other automakers joined the scene around 1967, contributing to a surge of muscle and pony cars. Despite some questionable transmission options, these cars ruled the roads.
Large displacement, high compression, large carburetors, and long duration high lift camshafts.
I didn't have to watch for 2 seconds to know the answer to that thumbnail question: COMPRESSION. Back then you could get 100 octane gasoline at Sunoco, just dial it in at the pump. With 100 octane you could safely run 13.5 to one compression as long as you jetted the carburetor a little rich.
I had a 426 max wedge in the late 80s, and I had to drive to a drag strip to get fuel It could use.
I'm an old school mopar guy but you probably should have mentioned the GTO before the pony cars.
The old engines were nice but can't match the power of the new ones
The Oldsmobile Rocket V-8 came out in 1949, the v-8 Old's introduced in 1916 was a 40 hp side-valve that was not called a "rocket".
Thank you.
The 1964 GTO kicked off the Muscle Car era. The Mustang and Barracuda were not initially Muscle Cars. The Buick Nailhead was a 264, 322, 364, 401, and 425 versions. The 215 aluminum engine was not a nailhead. The Chrysler HEMI lasted through 1958 in it's first version.
Compression supported by 110 octane fuel. Mostly 110 octane fuel
Oh my gosh what Oldsmobile had planned after the 455 but then the emissions crap started and they had to shelve it.
1964 Pontiac GTO started it all. '65 Mustang? Seriously?
Well, you got a few details wrong for sure but there's is nothing like the kick in the ass from Holly 850 double pumper on a great manifold. Fuel injection is nice but......
Number 7 Pontiac, "did not" share it's design with other GM V8's.
Rovers never used nailhead Buick engines Rover purchased the patterns for the 215 cu.in. aluminum Buick from GM.
Cams, cubes, carbs and compression. Yeah baby
