I’ve watched every single one of your videos. You have the uncanny ability to turn mundane things into the most interesting lessons. Thank you. My guess is that it will go for $10.3 million
@@ExploringStamps As Charles might say, "You don't look like stamp collectors." Actually I had to laugh a little when Charles said, "He looked like a stamp collector." At one time there was a stereo typical look of a stamp collect, the short sleeve dress shirt, baggy dress pants, the briefcase, little disheveled and normally an older person. I guess you just knew the look when you saw it. To the point, back to 2006 I went to Washington DC for the National Stamp Show with my kids. As a single dad, a lot of the vacations I took with them involved going to stamp shows. The kids also attended stamp meeting at our local club. So I there was in DC back in 2006 with my 11 and 13 year old children for yet other sfamp show. We decided to take the DC subway train from the hotel near Dupoint Circle to the convention center. I was wondering if we were on the right train to get to the stamp show and my kids both said, "Dad look around, who do you see riding this train?" I thought, oh my gosh, they were right, you can tell a stamp collector by their looks. But that was in 2006. I don't think this is true any more, especially because of collectors that look like you guys.
Good morning I just finished watching your conversation about the most expensive stamp in the world with Mike and Charles I am a fan of the noble spirit and I've won several auctions they have awesome stuff so when Michael introduced himself representing Noble spirit I was even more excited to hear the conversation how stimulating it was I'm a very new stamp collector i dabbled in stamp collecting in my childhood but nothing serious so when the pandemic hit I found myself on eBay in the stamp section as I was browsing and the next thing I knew I was bidding on auctions and winning and a philatelic was born. I'm a huge fan of anything pre 1800 first day covers and searching for sock on nose I first learned about sock on nose on one of your episodes I've been a fan of your exploring stamps Channel for about a year now I have seen many of your videos and I love them all and I've learned so much from you and I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and giving me a better understanding of what it is to be a stamp collector so don't be surprised in the future if you hear from me because I have many questions and Curiosities on the art of stamp collecting my guess for the most expensive step in the world will be nine million eight hundred thousand dollars can't wait for the big day of the auction to see what the stamp goes for keep up the excellent work and look forward to seeing more videos your stamp buddy Ralph
This was a wonderful episode of #philately with Charles, Michael, and yourself. Not only was it incredibly interesting I found the passion exhibited by all three of you very emotional at times; which speaks volumes about the health of philately! When young men like yourselves (unlike myself) are so passionate about stamp collecting it is the strongest evidence yet that Philately is thriving and here to stay for well beyond my lifetime. BTW, I think the price will be $15.3 million. Thanks Graham for hosting this episode about the Magenta.
Wow that’s awesome! I just started stamp collecting this month. I have around 200 which is a good start. I have a lot of J.F.K. stamps and a few books with Australian and Portuguese stamps. I tried looking all of them up but some stamps I couldn’t find online or there was very little history about them, but I enjoy them. My most rare/expensive thing is not really a stamp but the letter cover it’s on. It’s from the search for Amelia Earhart. I also have the 4 stamps of Amelia Earhart’s alleged crash in the Marshall Islands. I can’t wait to collect more stamps and to watch more of your videos! #philately
Welcome to philately 🙌. Sounds like you are off to a great start and have some interesting items already. Thanks for watching the channel, hope you enjoy the videos 😊
Personally I think there is one thing that has added more interest and value to the Philatelic world and its this channel. I started watching even before I started collecting, and now I look back wishing I had started earlier.
Great show Graham! Always interested in any news about this unique and beautiful magenta treasure! Loved the conversation and all the information Michael and Charles shared. So here we go with my prediction...$14.5 million.
Graham: another great program. After all, part of the excitement of philately is the possibility, however rare or unlikely, that some collector out there -- young or old, seasoned or novice -- might just find another One Cent Magenta. Or a Blue Mauritius. Or an inverted Jenny. Thanks, as always.
Thank you James! You bring up an interesting point, WHAT IF after the stamp is sold for 20 million, someone like you or me finds another one out there? I'm sure the buyer wouldn't be too happy about that 😅
Another brilliant episode! Charles and Michael present a great balance of knowledge and passion for stamps. Oh, yes, total for auction price and buyer's premium will be 14,950,000. I wonder if the overdraft protection of my checking account will cover my shortfall?
I agree with both you and Charles in that I would for sure buy it at auction but likely not if it was just for sale. I would want to be part of the list of owners who go down in history and I would for sure get caught up in the competitive atmosphere at the auction itself. My prediction is 12.85M 🤞🏻🤞🏻
$21.2 M. Where else can you park so much $ in such a small, easily portable space? “Pound for pound, the world’s most valuable item!” As usual, great vid!
Frontal Lobes: Thinking the last time I spent $15 million on stamps my wife found out and I had to buy A LOT of chocolates and flowers to calm things down around the house.... Back of Brain: Reaches for Wallet....
Very interesting episode and fully enjoyed the expertise and knowledge filled discussion. Also agree that it's fascinating with collectors leaving their mark as previous ownership but can complicate things even more with fakes and counterfeits no?
That is a great question! I would imagine that the signatures make it a bit more complex to counterfeit (I could be wrong) but since there are additions over the years, I think that would be difficult to replicate. 🤔.
Graham, I have enjoyed this episode and enjoy all of your episodes. I would like to give an estimate for the 2 cent magenta that will be auctioned off. I feel it will go for 14,890,000.00 USD. I feel so excited that our hobby is alive and well and we are almost (hopefully) out of this pandemic.
Worth the wait to watch! People with stupid money will probably spend 14.3 mil total. Going to have to set my calendar so I can watch it live.... I would probably break that money up into several purchases, then go on a vacation to recover, haha. Today, I have a local auction for a Penny Black that is up to $130 that I keep looking at, but with the premium, etc. I will probably spend my money on groceries this week... Too bad it has nice margins and a pretty maltese red cancel...
Thank you Laura! I will also be watching it live 😊. You sound like a much more responsible bidder than I am, kudos! fingers crossed for 14.3🤞 and I hope another PB comes up in your local auction.
Graham, I don't know if you enjoy comic books. But you should take a look at the story "Donald Duck and The Gilded Man". The story was first published by Dell in Four Color #422 (September-October 1952). The story references the the legendary 1856 British Guiana 1c magenta where Donald Duck is a knowledgeable stamp collector. Take a look!
Oh absolutely, Stuart weitzman has cited that as one of his inspirations for purchasing the magenta, and I was able to view it at the postal museum when I went there. A comic book inspiring a 9.5 million $ spend! 😅 crazy!
The stamp is dated 4th April 1856. That's 165 years ago last month. The stamp shows a figure[behind the cancelations which can't be seen] if someone could actually delete the cancelations and reveal the figure of what it is...that would be quite amazing. Can any of you with photoshop or Corel Draw ..hey Graham have a try. I think its not ugly at all due to the real stamp image being blotted out. If you reveal the true image i think the stamp would be quite nice. Its a Octagon stamp too...are there other octagon stamps out there? if this is the only one 8 sided then that adds to the value.
Wow! I really think it will sell for around 17 million! I will be right, or at least closest, I would love to grab lunch with you three! That would be awesome.
That would be an interesting outcome. Both King George V and King Carol II (Romania) tried to purchase the stamp in 1922 when it was up for auction, both did not succeed of course....so royalty has had a go at it before.
When this sale was announced, I e-mailed the curator of the Queen's collection, asking if he would recommend the purchase to complete Her Majesty's collection. But he said they will not be bidding, saying "when it was last sold we very briefly considered whether a recommendation to Her Majesty might be made, but very quickly came to the view that no attempt to acquire the stamp would be feasible. We took the view then, as did anecdotally King George V when offered the stamp, that the likely cost would be prohibitive." It would certainly be an expensive space-filler ... !
The owners of this marquee stamp is listed on Wiki. Why do you have to sign and deface it? By the way, June 8 is my birthday. I wonder if Sotheby's have some discount offer.
Interesting discussion. I hope the Magenta goes to a collector or a group of collectors rather than an investment trust. I think $14,850,000 (plus taxes if necessary).
@@ExploringStamps I don't think it will reach that high, but it was just easy maths based on your subscribers. But like any auction you only need two people that will pay over the odds to fight it out. You see it on ebay. Things go for well under if only 1 person is interested and people pay over the odds if they are competing with others and are desperate to win (forgetting the actual value for the item)
The collectibles market has gone bonkers over the past year or so, so I could see this stamp equaling or exceeding the high-end estimate. But, I'll be more conservative and guess $13.5 million as the full cost of the stamp.
To me, I agree with your first impression: could be cut out of a cereal box. Owners of priceless Chinese paintings always added their personal seal to the image, so that sems legit. Since it’s a one-of-a-kind object and a plaything of millionaires I don’t have a strong opinion,
Interesting, I didn't know that this was also done in some of the painting market. Iol it is a "plaything" of the millionaires 😂 no reason for me to fuss haha.
That gives me an idea maybe I should sign all the rare stamps in The 20 albums on the back of millions of rare stamps with calligraphy writing all 3 letters Gul
An exciting time indeed! How about $11.25m as a guess? In my utterly ignorant opinion, I personally can't see the sale price jumping that much higher that before, but I am ready to be proved completely wrong!
What would happen if it sold for less than the Treskilling Yellow? Would that mean it wasn't the most valuable stamp any more or would it still be the most valuable stamp as it sold for $9.5 million last time? I think it will sell for about $12.5 million though.
What a great question! I would think it gets demoted... it would no longer be the most valuable stamp and the Treskilling Yellow could take the title, although I think the last time it was bought the winning bid was kept confidential.
$16,400,000. As awesome as this stamp is, I think I’d rather have an inverted Jenny, and just a larger more diverse collection so I’m not putting all my eggs in one basket.
Now that is a wise and responsible use of 15mil, Michael was on the same page. I need to learn a thing or two from the both of you. Thanks Patrick, fingers crossed for 16.4 🤞
Like the stock market, stamps are commodities, speculations for gamblers....where only well heeled philatelists play this game. Stick to enjoying a box of stamps and using catalogs, it's what self education is all about.
If Arab oil money takes an interest, the sky is the limit and $20m wouldn't be out of the question. The Arabs drove up art prices when they became involved and they simply look at it as an investment. Perhaps the Queen will want it to complete her collection before she dies? This will be the last chance she gets to do so. Perhaps that wouldn't be a good thing because it would then remain in the royal family and never come up for sale ever again. I don't like people making personal marks on the back of the stamp. To me that takes away from the stamp which in my mind should be as close as possible to its original state. The value of a privately owned van Gogh painting wouldn't increase if the owner decided to leave his personal mark on it, so why would a unique historical iconic stamp be any different?
All valid points, Peter! It would be terrible if the stamp just vanished from the market but it could totally happen if royalty purchase it or it gets taken as an investment out of our sight...who knows.
No, I would not buy the magenta even if I had the money. I like philately as a hobby, and spending huge amount of money sort of takes it to a level I am not interested in. I like to collect and look out for good stuff, but I have a very narrow focus on countries and time periods that are interesting but also affordable. But I think the price will be 14 million :-)
Wonderful! This time it might fall short? I'm going with 8.3 million.
Thanks Erica, it could absolutely fall short. lets see 👀
Well Done Erica!! I am impressed, you called it perfectly... Sotheby's take note!! Please reach out to claim your lunch 😊
Well done, Erica.

My guess is $14,220,330, thanks!
1.22$ ! !! That would make a happy owner , but if sold again that money needs to go to charity!
Agreed 👍🙂
Whoa, the Gianna took a hit at the auction this morning. A little over 8.3 mil.
It did! Did you see who bought it? Stanley Gibbons, the stamp is now on its way to London.
@@ExploringStamps Interesting! I wonder if it will end up in a private collection of Lillibet's 😉
$11,550,000.00 Is my guess as to what the final payment. Price ($9M) + Buyers Premium ($2M) + Taxes ($550K)
🤞😊
That gives me an idea maybe I should sign all the rare stamps in The 20 albums on the back of millions of rare stamps with calligraphy writing all 3 letters Gul
really nice stamp, question remains. what would you do if you owned one???
Thanks for another great episode Graham.
My bid = $10.5 million
I won't go a penny higher...... :-D
Thanks Raul! Not a penny more!! Fingers crossed 😊🤞
I really enjoyed the video. I believe it will sell for $14.1 Million. Have a great day! =)
Thank you David, fingers crossed 🤞
Great video as always ! I think it will sell for $12.4 Million :-)
Glad you enjoyed it 😊. Fingers crossed for 12.4🤞
Another interesting and exciting episode to watch.
My guess is 13.2M
Thank you Nanda! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
An exciting time indeed! How about $11.25m as a guess? In my utterly ignorant opinion, I personally can't see the sale price jumping that much higher that before, but I am ready to be proved completely wrong!
Great interview
Thank you Philip 😊
Really enjoyed the discussion, although the stamp isn’t exactly my cup of tea 😂 I’m guessing it will go for $12.8M 💰
Awesome video, enjoyed it a lot! Estimation - 12.5m
Thank you Nikita! Glad you enjoyed it.
@@ExploringStamps What would be your recomendation for a Latvian stamp catalogue?
What would happen if it sold for less than the Treskilling Yellow? Would that mean it wasn't the most valuable stamp any more or would it still be the most valuable stamp as it sold for $9.5 million last time?
I think it will sell for about $12.5 million though.
What a great question! I would think it gets demoted... it would no longer be the most valuable stamp and the Treskilling Yellow could take the title, although I think the last time it was bought the winning bid was kept confidential.
$16.4 million. Calling it now!
🤞
My guess for the hammer price plus BP = $12.6 Million
👍👍
$16.2million. great talk but i like the Inverted Jennys i think they will go for $6.8million it will be fun to see what happens.
Ooo, those are 2 good bets, lets see how they land on June 8th 🤞
$16,400,000. As awesome as this stamp is, I think I’d rather have an inverted Jenny, and just a larger more diverse collection so I’m not putting all my eggs in one basket.
Now that is a wise and responsible use of 15mil, Michael was on the same page. I need to learn a thing or two from the both of you. Thanks Patrick, fingers crossed for 16.4 🤞
Great episode! I don't know if i would buy it or not, if you by it than what do you do with it? My guess is that all done it's $12.75 million.
Its a good point. There could easily be "Buyer's Remorse" after purchasing it.... the buyer might think "now what?" lol. Fingers crossed for 12.75 🤞
I dunno how I feel about signing the stamp, I see both points of view.
Its definitely a controversial debate 😅
This sale will determine the health of stamp collecting as a hobby.
👍. Are you bidding this time James?
@@ExploringStamps I dunno...Its either bidding on this or buying a few islands in the Caribbean.
Like the stock market, stamps are commodities, speculations for gamblers....where only well heeled philatelists
play this game.
$15.7 million. And I’m not willing to spend a penny more!
😊 🤞 Fingers crossed for 15.7
No, I would not buy the magenta even if I had the money. I like philately as a hobby, and spending huge amount of money sort of takes it to a level I am not interested in. I like to collect and look out for good stuff, but I have a very narrow focus on countries and time periods that are interesting but also affordable. But I think the price will be 14 million :-)
Thank you Rasmus, completely valid point! Fingers crossed for $14million 🤞
It will go for usd 13.8 million including premium and taxes is my guess.
👍
