For a 30 minute video on youtube, that certainly held my attention ! Such knowledge and expertise on show. Thanks for sharing that fantastic collection with us
I was lucky enough to speak to Bill at Stampex a few years ago. He was so interested in what I collect and had brilliant advice. When someone is so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about a topic, it is mesmerising to listen to.
Totally agree. I love listening to those who are passionate about this hobby, and Bill is the perfect example of such a person, his enthusiasm is contagious. 😊
What an incredibly educational episode. Bill was so generous with his knowledge about these British stamps. This interview demonstrates how much one needs to know to ensure that serious collectors purchase wisely; especially if you are involved in auctions with the "big boys"! The other take away for me is just how passionate Bill is and must be to be a successful philatelic dealer. The knowledge he personally has amassed is priceless when seriously collecting high value stamps. I am in awe! For me, and I assume many others involved in this hobby, the artistry of stamps and postal material is the primary attraction and the associated history is second. As a casual collector I just don't have the time to gain the knowledge Bill has since I have other interests as well. But, I respect those with Bill's knowledge and can listen to them talk all day. Thank you Graham for sharing this interview!
😊 So happy that you enjoyed this one, Thanks Gary! I think a lot of us are in awe from Bill's demonstration, the amount of time to become that knowledgable and collect in such a way is amazing. Perhaps one day I will go down that route for my own collection, just not yet. Thanks so much for watching.
This kind of conversation must be had more often! Others can learn fast when stamp qualities are explained in the practical sense and through actual examples. Congrats on this great video Graham!!! 🎉 and shout out to Stanley Gibbons regarding the book binding interruption 😂
Thank you 😊. I totally agree! A conversation and demonstration with the experts is the best way to pass the knowledge. Bonus points if the expert is as cool as Bill Barrell!! Lol Stanley Gibbons is yet to make a statement about their book bindings 😂
Scintillating! So fascinating that I had a hard time taking a timeout. The expert sharing his knowledge with all of us wholeheartedly with joy! So much appreciated Graham! Thanks again! A HOME RUN! (I don't know how to say that in Cricket!)
Ah, a new episode. Time to make a cup of tea and enjoy another well crafted video. Thanks and much appreciation go to you and Laura for the production of each and every video. 😊
Our pleasure! 😊. Laura had just landed an hour and 20 min prior to filming, she did a fantastic job while being exhausted from the trip. Thanks so much for watching.
Bill seems to be the kind of guy that is approachable and full of the details that will you will walk away from having learned more than when you got there. Looks like I am keeping every penny red I find ;)
He absolutely is! If you see him at a stamp show, you must approach and say hi 👋😊. I will have to relook at all my penny reds as well, there is SO MUCH to look for, thanks for watching!!
Great video Graham! These types of videos offer nothing but inspiration for me. Good knowledge from an expert philatelist is priceless! Thanks so much!
Amazing video! We certainly love to see more of these detailed descriptions of valuable collections! One of the most ''delicious'' half an hour on your wonderful channel, Graham! Thank you!!
Thank you Graham for a Great presentation on Great Britain stamps, always looking forward to your next video. Happy Holiday to you and your wife and as always Happy Collecting

That was truly fascinating, Graham. It is amazing to see the depth of knowledge that is needed to be a true expert in the field. The lesson that Mr. Barrell taught is basically to pay attention to what is in front of you -and to do your research! Great program. Thanks to both ofyou.!
It really is amazing to see how deep you can go with knowledge and research for just 1 type of stamp 😊. Thanks so much Nyle, glad you enjoyed the episode!
An impressive video Graham!!🙌 a great joy to watch Bill sharing his knowledge and expertise with some amazing stamps. What a fantastic episode👌, appreciate your time and sharing with us. Looking forward to seeing more such episodes. 😊
Thats exactly what I enjoy best about Bill, he knows how to get all of our attention and keep it at a level that even I can understand 😊. Thanks so much for watching!!
This was excellent. When you hear things explained by an expert, the reasons behind all the special differences start to come out. Otherwise, you're just looking at lists in the catalogue and wondering why one row is cheap and the other is expensive. And I don't think enough people give you credit for your excellent camera work and editing, Graham! Your videos are a pleasure to view, whatever the topic! ✨
It makes SUCH a big difference when it’s explained in person with actual examples, I walked away with a new appreciation for this style of collecting and the ‘deep diving’ philatelist, it’s quite impressive! 😊 so glad to see that you enjoyed the video, thanks so much for watching!!
Like Bill Barrel said: know your stamps (to avoid losses) ! He´s a wealth of knowlege and it´s a pleasure to listen to his explanations. Thanks for sharing, and Merry Christmas ! Greets from GER, U.
Found this video after opening, for the first time in many years, a stockbook I had when I was a kid. It was incredibly informative. Thank you very much!
Fascinating! It is this sort of detail and expertise that will keep philately alive. I am a new collector and can't wait to meet Bill at the next Stampex!
Excellent video. Issues from other countries also show the need for such detail orientation. Thanks for sharing this session. It would have been nice to learn how much Bill paid for the album / collection.
Thank you 😊. I also am super curious as to how much it cost, based on the prices we heard in the video, it must have been quite a price! Thanks for watching.
Glad you enjoyed it! This makes me want to have a more serious early GB collection, I’m going to have to step it up a bit 😊 Thanks so much for watching.
@@ExploringStamps Good morning my friend. All is well thanks.. been following you still.. just haven't commented in a while. :) Love the work you doing here to bring our hobby into the future. hope all is well on your side also... May you and your family enjoy a peaceful XMAS.
Wow! It is a great, great video! What a magnificent and unmeasurable learning experience. Bill's knowledge and experience are to be gasped at. I would like to sit at his feet, or view from the corner and learn, learn, learn. I will certainly watch this video several times, even though I cannot aspire yet to such a depth of knowledge. I am going to collect GB, but whether I will be able to ever afford even the cheapest of the early Q. Victoria stamps is questionable. This video also illustrated to me the advantage of buying or learning from a knowledgeable dealer and investigating a stamp for purchase physically, in comparison with buying stamps on line. It will be a great loss if the number of these stamp dealers declines to rare! Thanks for the excellent video, Bill, Graham and Laura!
Thank you so much, Charnie. 😊 I think Bill has really shed some light on this aspect of philately for a lot of us. I learned soo many things from this conversation, and I agree.... it would be a terrible loss if the number of dealers declines to rare, fingers crossed that maybe this video can help inspire a future stamp dealer. Thanks again for your support.
Enjoyed the discussion and enthusiasm. Agree the presentation was appealing - seems to provide maximum flexibility in terms of layout, note taking, certificates etc. does this method have a name? album amd paper type? Or is this a completely bespoke approach? Inspirational in any event!
You are very welcome 😊. Thank you so much for watching, and yes definitely consider getting the book if you start a penny red collection, a really helpful resource!
Fantastic episode, Graham. A master class in philately. Antiques Road Show for stamp nuts. What a thrill to sit down with an expert and get this kind of insight. My sincerest thanks to Bill Barrell for offering his time and expertise to us. (Other than that, the episode was, "Meh." 😂) edit: I just now noticed the description says this is an encore appearance for Bill on your channel. Perhaps you could include a link in the description to the previous episode? edit 2: Allow me - ruclips.net/video/gwCoEBn5gUI/видео.htmlsi=q1BHDDvmUzG32WC3
Thanks Ted 😊. Yeah Bill seems to be a favorite on the channel, after his first appearance I needed to find a way to get him back for a second video...The camera (and viewers) love him. Glad you enjoyed it, thanks so much for watching.
Could listen to this guy all day. Im a numismatics man but i do enjoy Victorian stamps . He knows his craft and make me want to get into stamps now 😂 excellent please do more with him i love the notty gritty information 👍👍👍
Fascinating! Super nice guy, so knowledgeable. one I'd be glad to deal with. Great episode. I'm sure it wasn't easy to film and to put together afterward. Outstanding job once again, Graham.
He absolutely is a super nice dude! If you get a chance to talk to Bill at a stamp show, please do! This was quite a fun challenge, 4 cameras and lots of audio/visual challenges that come with noisy stamp shows, but it seems to have come out okay 😊 Thanks so much for watching!
I really enjoyed this video, even when I do not collect British stamps. When I want to buy a collection at an auction, I can be reviewing it in a similar way for quite some time. That is the only way to come to a good price you are willing to pay for a collection.
Thank you Eric!! I havent been reviewing stamps thoroughly prior to purchasing, its good to see that you and others are doing this. Bill's lesson was super important for me. Thank you so much for watching!!
Thanks for this episode with a ton of information. I don't collect UK stamps, but here is so much stamp general information that we as collectors need. I was at Stampex 2019 and I might go to 2024.
Enjoyed this video immensely.. Now I've got to look through the envelope of penny reds.. The envelope came from a 90 year old man that had been collected worldwide stamps for over 60 years.. his focus was on stamps of Great Britain,as well as the British commonwealth of nations..
Bill is one of the very few dealers I have absolute faith in. He's an incredibly nice guy and has sold me some incredible material. And he forgave me for finding the 1st use of the 1d Red on cover in his stock for a silly price. He was not bitter at all. He just missed it. He is utterly honest and if you're selling, he's one of the dealers to go to. I also understand that his own personal collection is something very special. And I have a huge collection and I don't have a clue what a lake red looks like. I've found several C7 "abnormals" (which they aren't), but never a mint one. As for SG 43 plate 77, I suspect that none of the stamps are genuine. Perkins Bacon records state that the plate was destroyed before any stamps were printed. So how can any exist?
He really is an incredible dealer and good guy, he is always willing to share his knowledge with anyone that approaches. An interesting theory on plate 77, tat would be a real twist to the story and could very possibly be true. Glad you enjoyed the video 😊. thanks for watching!
That video was exceptional. The time flew due to the expert knowledge imparted with enthusiasm.you certa8nly held my attention. Thanks for the time and effort you have put into the video.
If there's one thing I'll keep in my heart after this episode, it's: "A philatelist uses eyes, tweezers and a magnifying glass", especially the eyes, I think sometimes that look at the stamps is a bit lacking
Great episode and motivates me to take a closer look at my stamps. However, this episodes highlight why I am not ready to die as deep as he is required to do not collect such a series as the Penny reds and blacks, I just don't have the time. But it is immensely helpful in evaluating even common modern US stamps. There are so many vintage MNH or lightly hinge stamps out there in various condition and looking for tears, thins, centering, quality of perfs, and yes suspicious signs of forgeries (this is mainly true of Forever stamps issued the past 10 years) all help a philatelist assemble a nice collection.
Thank you Chris 😊. Yeah I totally agree. If I was to try this style of collecting (and its quite tempting), I would have to pick a small corner in the philatelic space to collect, it has to be super specific but will likely still be very time consuming. Thanks so much for watching!
That was so interesting and I definitely learnt a few nuggets of useful information. I would however be no good as a stamp dealer as I would keep all the cool stamps for myself. I'd be bankrupt in no time whatsoever 😂
Hahaha, SAME! Every acquisition would become an addition to my collection...glad to see that I'm not the only one with that issue. Glad you enjoyed the episode, thanks so much for watching!!
When I look such videos on the old UK stamps, I know that I´m only a small padawan. I´m glad having some main numbers, but from the specialisation I have no knowledge. I know you can specialice them a lot, but here my limits are starting immediatly. It is fascinating, on the other side it will cost you a ton of money if you want to do it. It is the same like collecting the first issues from Austria. In the Ferchenbauer catalogue there are hundreds of sites only for the first issue, like the big book from Stanley Gibbons with the plates and so on. It interests me a lot, but I will never have an important collection on them. Only some nice looking main numbers with gaps here and there. It´s OK, you can´t have everything. Fascinating topic.
I agree, it is really fascinating to see how such a collection can be put together, but we all have limits in time and money… on one hand I would love to pursue such a detailed and impressive collection, but on the other hand I would be quite okay the the gaps and lack of rarities in my albums. Thanks Oliver, so great to see you enjoyed the video 😊
Fascinating viewing of an interesting collection. Wonderful narrative from Bill. Did the album have any two penny blues? These never seem to get the same airtime as the one penny stamps…
Thank you for this episode very valuable, i own some 17th and 18th century stamps most of it US stamps. Im looking for selling some of it individually but dont know where and how to start . Your advice is appreciated .
When,as a dealer,I valued a collection,I would figure the scarce and rare items first. I would figure them at pretty good % of retail. I would low ball the ordinary inexpensive and the faulty items. The reason being is that sorting through, cataloging, stocking etc.inexpensive stuff is very time consuming. Time is $. The best collection that I purchased was a nearly complete,US and Worldwide collection. It ranged from the penny black to 1988. I bought it in 1989. It was about 25% mint and 75% used. The inexpensive to the moderate valued stamps were in top condition. The scarce were about 75% sound. The rare items tended to have small faults but with exceptions. This was not an easy collection to value and it was not easy on my $ either!
I showed Bill my Cardiff Penny with certificatesome years ago in York but he wasn't impressed, I sold it some years later for £450 to another dealer have regretted selling it ever since🎉
I enjoyed every second of this video. It was great to see Bill again in your video. Stanley Gibbons should give Bill a new catalogue 😂 I have a question: 7:58 What is a reprinted Penny Black? I thought the original plate was taken out to reprint some Penny Blacks, for example, in the 1910s. Would they be considered fake? They are still not cheap.
😂 SG should totally give him a new book, especially since he gave them such a wonderful shout out!! REALLY GOOD question, I actually think that I have more questions about the Penny Blacks now than before making this video! I need to reach out to Bill and find out because I cannot find anything about it online. If anyone else knows about the reprints, please let us know here. Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
I used to sweat off used stamps and preserve the OG. That’s original gum, not gangster.😂 Some of my U.S. airmail stamps were canceled with a bi-plane stamp. I think the clerks enjoyed intentionally applying the cancellations upside down.
Hello 👋😊. The letter blocks at the bottom of a penny black are what helps to identify which plate they are from. The letters are aligned slightly differently from stamp to stamp, so you have to compare the letters with an example from each plate. If you have a penny black with the letters CB for example, you need to compare it with a CB example from each of the Penny Black Plates (or until you find a match). Here is an excellent resource to use, hope this helps :) www.stampsoftheworld.co.uk/wiki/Category:Penny_Black_Plating
My desire is everyone who views this post and the all philately societies about time stand up and starts generating incentives for children, teens , amond parents to come to philately exhibitions. Everyone should start thinking about stamps collecting as source of knowledge as just a Google lens give the description on stamp figure. Also on their great value. About time the kids visits their grannies house to open their old trunks for letters, envelopes.

Great episode and one of immense learning . HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU BOTH and hope 2024 will be a more adventurous year for us philatelists.
Thank you Roger! Merry Christmas🎄 😊
Fascinating episode, thanks Graham and Bill. Really interesting and very informative.
Thank you 😊 Glad you enjoyed it!!

Glad you enjoyed it. 😊 The books are all excellent, totally worth getting. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Graham! So much to know about the Penny Black and Red, awesome content again, enjoyed watching.
😊 Thank you so much Kees. Oh and I received your letter today, it arrived in time!! :D. Thanks for watching.
@@ExploringStamps That is great, so happy it arrived on time, it was a gamble 😀
Wow, very interesting episode
Thank you 😊 Glad you found it interesting!
Great Show Excellent information Thanks Bill from Kevin in France and Florida
😊 Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
You are amazing. I am afraid to sell my collection because i am so uneducated. You are brilliant.
Twaskyou sr for all evaluation of penny black stamps.
Blessings
Enjoyed this video immensely.. Now I've got to look through the envelope of penny reds.. The envelope came from a 90 year old man that had been collected worldwide stamps for over 60 years.. his focus was on stamps of Great Britain,as well as the British commonwealth of nations..
Great episode with so much to learn.
Thank you so much 😊 glad you enjoyed it!
Great episode, Graham! Although I don't collect GB, it was still fascinating. (Still haven't got Boro Boro stamp 😒)
Thank you Rick 😊 glad you found it interesting. I have a good feeling that you will find the Bora Bora girl very soon 🤞
Blessings sr long life. You are superprofesional experts on england old stamps.
Merry Christmas!! That a video! Never saw somethin like this! Really a dream came true!!!
Thank you and same to you 😊 Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
That video was exceptional. The time flew due to the expert knowledge imparted with enthusiasm.you certa8nly held my attention. Thanks for the time and effort you have put into the video.
Loved this episode a lot Graham.
Thank you Daniel, glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Twaskyou sr for all the value england stamps.
Blessings
Looking forward to this episode
Thanks Louis, hope you enjoy it 😊
I enjoyed the video. Very informative, thank you. You have a great day =)
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊 Thanks so much for watching!
Right I’m going to dig out my old stamp collection and see if I have anything.
🙌 awesome!! Enjoy looking through your old collection.
Fantastic information. So much to learn.
Thank you, Stephen 😊
If there's one thing I'll keep in my heart after this episode, it's: "A philatelist uses eyes, tweezers and a magnifying glass", especially the eyes, I think sometimes that look at the stamps is a bit lacking
😊 Wonderful! It made me realize that we often forget to focus on the basics to ‘know our stamps’. 👀 🔍 😊 Thanks so much for watching, Jessica!
Thanks so kindly. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Very educational Video, thanks
😊 Thank you
When I look such videos on the old UK stamps, I know that I´m only a small padawan.
Hi guys. The central number in Maltese Cross is probably London burghs. Best regards James in Scotland.
Such a good video!
Glad you enjoyed it 😊 thanks for watching!
Fantastic knowledge very well explained. have a great Christmas Bill.
Merry Christmas! Thanks for watching 😊
Nice
Great video interesting
Glad you enjoyed it 😊 thanks for watching!!
Fascinating viewing of an interesting collection. Wonderful narrative from Bill. Did the album have any two penny blues? These never seem to get the same airtime as the one penny stamps…
Post script, how in gosh creation can you look at stamps without glasses.God bless.I admire your ķnowledge❤
Excellent video
Thank you 😊
Awesome
Thank you 😊
Thank you for this episode very valuable, i own some 17th and 18th century stamps most of it US stamps. Im looking for selling some of it individually but dont know where and how to start . Your advice is appreciated .
I always clean off any tiny bits stuck at the back too.
It’s a good practice!
Ive got stamps very old stamps from Denmark ,France ,Italy I want to sell plse
I showed Bill my Cardiff Penny with certificatesome years ago in York but he wasn't impressed, I sold it some years later for £450 to another dealer have regretted selling it ever since🎉
I enjoyed every second of this video. It was great to see Bill again in your video. Stanley Gibbons should give Bill a new catalogue 😂
I have a question: 7:58 What is a reprinted Penny Black? I thought the original plate was taken out to reprint some Penny Blacks, for example, in the 1910s. Would they be considered fake? They are still not cheap.
😂 SG should totally give him a new book, especially since he gave them such a wonderful shout out!!
REALLY GOOD question, I actually think that I have more questions about the Penny Blacks now than before making this video! I need to reach out to Bill and find out because I cannot find anything about it online. If anyone else knows about the reprints, please let us know here. Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
Victorian stamps with pinholes were used as decorations - people used a needle and thread to hang up hundreds at Christmas!
Like the ‘stamp snake’ we found in the London 2022 episode 🐍 (#philately 25)
I used to sweat off used stamps and preserve the OG. That’s original gum, not gangster.😂
Some of my U.S. airmail stamps were canceled with a bi-plane stamp. I think the clerks enjoyed intentionally applying the cancellations upside down.
Hello Bill! Please reply on how to know the plate number. Thank you
Thank you so much Bill! Awesome help and assistance on knowledge sharing perhaps a video on the subject you may try please
Greetings from New Delhi
My desire is everyone who views this post and the all philately societies about time stand up and starts generating incentives for children, teens , amond parents to come to philately exhibitions.
Everyone should start thinking about stamps collecting as source of knowledge as just a Google lens give the description on stamp figure. Also on their great value. About time the kids visits their grannies house to open their old trunks for letters, envelopes.
I prefer the Stanley Gibbons magazines full set that specifies addresses
of auctioneers in old currency before 1970 new currency Decimalisation
