    I actually started watching you after getting my kids a Hermit crab. We got the little critter keeper thing that sold as a set at the store and one crab. Then I came across your video while looking for what to feed the crab (the store pellets just looked and smelled gross). I was shocked to see that everything the store told me and sold me was wrong. I went right back to Petco and we got a 10 gallon tank, eco earth, humidity gage, plants, bowls for bathing and eating, and a heating pad. Now our crab is much happier and back in his shell.
    Your videos were a life saver for our little crab....after learning about how they are live caught and transported here, I feel bad...but we got him now and will try to give him the best life we can ;-)

      just curious, why was your crab out of its shell? By the way I did the same thing you guys did. I bought a single crab in a critter keeper. Then I came across her videos and did exactly everything you guys did. My only suggestion or request would be to please buy a second hermit crab because they really do get depressed when they’re alone and that can lead to death.

  • @lorih6375
    @lorih6375 6 лет назад +34

    I know that you don't condone the purchase of crabs, however, I'm really glad you made the crab videos. So many are bought everyday and are kept in kritterkeepers as instructed by stores. Not many youtubers make hermit crab content and a lot of the content that is out there is pretty dated. Your hermit videos are not only entertaining, but are informative and educational. I'm sure you've helped the plight of at least several newly purchased crabs. I have crabs as well, and care for them almost identically as you. Hermits are such amazing little creatures and it's so sad that the industry is what it is.

      I bet Your crab is molting which is where they shed they’re exoskeleton it could take up from a month to 2 months. DO NOT DISTURB HIM/HER/IT, If so you could put them in danger, they will come out on they’re own when done with the molting process.

    • @postersm7141
      @postersm7141 6 лет назад +1

      The One twin you don’t have to support the industry but here’s the way I look at it, the poor things are kept in horrible conditions. Therefore I decided to rescue not purchase but rescue two little guys. I know for a fact that my little guys are in way better condition than they were at the pet store. So I look at it as a rescue mission. I would say if you really want one you should get one, actually you should get two because they don’t like to be alone. As long as you’re willing to do all the work and it’s really not much but you have to do it, I would say go ahead and rescue a couple of them :-)

    I used to have a Hermit Crab named Harold. Unfortunately, I had no idea he was suffering until I researched the care of them. I thought the sand had to be wet (me not knowing anything) so I soaked it and there were flies in his cage. Then I dumped out all of his food because it looked like he had pooped in it, and gave him fresh food (again, me giving him way too much food and not knowing he never ate). Then he was so stubborn I couldn't soak him and all he liked was that stick in his cage he climbed on. RIP Harold you are in better care now. I love and miss you forever. Wish I had hermit crabs again, now that I researched their care.

    Please look into the 5:1 ratio of play sand and eco-earth and getting water bowls to where your crabs can FULLY submerge. :)

    • @kristaduke7528
      @kristaduke7528 6 лет назад +3

      AlexVsPeoni land hermit crabs would drown if they were fully submerged in water🙁🙁

    • @AlexVsPeoni
      @AlexVsPeoni 6 лет назад +5

      Krista Duke Land Hermit Crabs actually need to have access of pools of water to where they can fully submerge so they can put certain amounts of salt and fresh water they need in their bodies. This is why baths are horrible for crabs, it ruins their balance of water THEY need. And in the wild they have access of deep pools of water with ways out so they won’t drown. Like branch’s and rocks. :)

    • @kristaduke7528
      @kristaduke7528 6 лет назад

      AlexVsPeoni I understand but in the wild it is different and I guess everyone has their own opinions, I've had hermit crabs before and I've done a lot of research, you are right tho, as long as their water dishes are deep enough for half of their body then I think they would be fine....I'm not saying you're wrong tho😊

    • @AB-nd6lo
      @AB-nd6lo 6 лет назад +1

      AlexVsPeoni play sand stinks. I do not use it. you do not want the crabs to be fully sumberged as they can drown
      I have had my crabs for 3 months now and they all have molted twice. substrate is a good 6" deep and my biggest crab is almost 3". I do handle my crabs and once a week they get a salt water bath.

    • @KayLeiCol
      @KayLeiCol 6 лет назад

      @@AB-nd6lo Got any tips for handling? My kids just won a tiny hermit crab at a carnival and the pet store man told us to get at least 2 more of different size or it'd be depressed. So we got a medium and a large. I tried to hold the large one like I do the tiny one and it pinched me. I'd like to get it to trust me. Is there any hope for these two pet store crabs or should I leave them be and just handle the tiny one?

  • @haybug1000
    @haybug1000 5 лет назад

    I now realize all the things I did wrong with my crabs.....I had bought a total of 4 or 5 within a few weeks since I started with one. I didn't know about salt water, dechlorinated water, eggshells....BUT i did feed them daily, I had a ten gallon thank that looking back wasn't filled with enough substrate. I had a slightly too small lid with a screen top. I had things for them to climb on, half a coconut sheel, a few hermy shells. I had a regular lightbulb inside one of those swivel clip lights that was used on my grandmas turtle. I even took my black bandana and put it over thefar end partially away from the light to serve as a sort of hidey section after one of them Angelica, had cooked theirself under the light before I used the bandana. On top of that I even cleaned it every few days to a week. I would use a spray bottle with bottle water in it and misted the hell out of the tank so that it always had light condensation inside to help with the humidity. The next crab to die either crawled out of its shell or was pulled out, I couldn't really tell. One stopped eating entirely, and the other buried itself for a bit before either dying or succumbing to being weak as they were a slow moving one and the longest one that lived. I haven't kept them since....because it was to heartbreaking to have them all die on me like that. I also got them from Petco is that says anything >.< Stupid thing I know. I wish I knew then what I know now. I've never cried that hard in my life, even when our old cat died when I was a kid.

    Help!! I'm 14 and I originally already have a teeny (a little over an inch big) hermit crab for about two months now. I saved all my money to get him a ten gallon tank after finding your videos, but today my mom decide to take in bring home two medium ( two and a half long) crabs that our neighbor's son could no longer care for. I separated my tiny crab from the crabitat because I'm afraid of that the two new crab will hurt him. They are double the size of my original crab. Is my tank is no longer big enough for all three of them?

    My kids won a hermit crab yesterday and they gave it to us in a plastic cup! It was 8pm by the time we got home so as soon as they went to school I went to the pet store. They told me to get this small heating pad, this hermit crab 'starter' kit and friends of different sizes. Our hermit we won is tiny so he gave us a medium and large one. The large one pinched me! The won my kids won has not done that at all and climbs all over my hands. I'm afraid to touch the medium one now. I'm obviously going to have to go back and get more substrate because they did not give me enough. I have the 3 in a 10 gallon. The more videos I watch the more I'm like freaking out about this situation. I just want to give them a good life now that we have them 😓

    I keep my little hermit crab in a 29 gallon he or she was giving to me as a gift two days ago in a critter keeper which I’m upset about bc I thought it was gonna be a fiddler crab smh when I saw it in that thing I was full blown freaked out so I bought 38 dollars worth of equipment and I’m gonna go buy non painted shells for it it’s a big beautiful purple hermit crab and I sadly have to buy it a friend so it’s not so depressed I hate wild caught animals we wouldn’t like if we were forced out of out homes into these small gross shelters

    adorable! I got a hermit crab named Hatteras named after the island we got him from (Hattie for short) and Im getting my sister one for Christmas this year. I got Hattie this summer and he is such a sweetie. He loves me. I'm sure he cant wait to get a friend! But does petco sell hermits? If not, were is the best place to get them? I got Hattie from an island 16 hours away from where I live, so I cant just go back there. Anyone got any ideas?

    Hey Lori. I rescued some 6 year old hermit crabs and I was wondering if I could use mineral blocks for them. I'm going on vacation and I don't know what to do. Seeing you have had yours for a long time do you recomend using mineral blocks for them

    Lori, what a great job with this video and content. I have a 55 gallon tank and have been thinking about turning it into a hermit crab tank, offering a home to anyone with unwanted crabs. I have a question about the dechlorinated water. Can you use Prime (aquarium dechlorinator) safely for crabs? If not, how to you dechlorinate their water?

    Hey Lori! Great video and great crab care! I had a question for you. Do you have any tips on stopping a hamster from biting? My robo isn’t scared of me and will come to my hand but will bite because he thinks I have a treat. I can’t really hold him and i really want to. Thanks again!

    • @noobycuber4128

      Andrews Stuff is he tame? Sometimes robos just don’t like to be handled. Wash your hands well , don’t use scented products. Or you could give him treats while handling so he eats the treat, not you

    I have a question. What happens when you overboil the hermit crab shells for them to move in? Also a crab i had, just died from moving into a new shell. I put some salt inside so that may have been the problem but idk. Should I Put Himalayan salt inside and on the crab shells?

    My son got 2 crabs 6 months ago. I see from the video I need more substrate. I have a question tho. We feed them all types of fruit and vegetables but they won't eat anything but apples. They are doing fine and active. Should I worry about them only wanting apple?
