    Loved the shop tour Ben. We have a similar past: Music and recording studios -> woodworking. And I sometimes dabble into drum making as well.

    Anytime I've watched STL during COVID, I've found myself craning my neck trying to get a better look at your shop and set up. When listening to STL, I would rely more on imagination. This is just what I was hoping to someday see. (Your hardware-storage video helped a little.) Now I'm happy. Very nice set-up! Shops are a blend of circumstances, heavily influenced by time, money, and space, but also reflecting aesthetics, work-flow, focus, and idiosyncrasies. Most only hope to get to the point of satisfaction you have achieved. Thankfully, the process is fun and never done. Thanks for all you do.

      Thanks Anderson,
      Are we ever done with our shops though?! I came across the hardware storage video yesterday, and they shop looked SO WEIRD TO ME!
      Looking around other peoples shops is one of my favorite things to do. I knew there were people annoyed by a glimpse into a shop and not really seeing it. Glad the soothed this pain!

      @@BenStrano If I was annoyed by getting just a peek, equally I was grateful for it. It's your shop.
      And you're right, I don't think we're ever done. I'm happy with the state of my shop, greatly transformed in the last year, but eager to get on with the next phase. But I promised a mission sofa first. Still, I've been sneeking in some small improvements, all related to the sofa project, of course. The latest was a folding outfield and slide-in infeed table for my bandsaw, which did help greatly in resawing the rails for the sofa.

    My shop is a two car garage and because of the multipurpose uses of it, I was always focused on efficiency. Over the last few years I lost interest in even being out there and ionically my woodworking suffered. Yet after watching your video, I realized what was going on. Thank you for sharing this, it was an inspiration!

    A lovely insight into your shop and your thoughts about the space. In my opinion it is much more interesting to hear how a shop has evolved according to your needs and the limitations of the space itself rather than a long list of expensive tools. Thank you for sharing!

    • @BenStrano
      @BenStrano  3 года назад +1

      Thanks. I like oogling over tools as much as the next person, but it starts to make a shop/studio feel less special and personal. Just a collection of tools as opposed to an important place to do unimportant things!

    Look at the Harbor Freight 2hp dust collector. It’s pretty nice, I don’t own it, but for the price it’s a good deal. 13” DeWalt on the planer, sharp knives it’s good, I’ve had one for years. It’s a beast to move. Best to let it live on a cart. For the zen of woodworking an extra 100 square feet so I can set up shop.

      @BenStrano  4 года назад

      Mitchell Kasdin I’ve been eyeing it up for awhile. I don’t use my dust spewing tools that much these days, but this past week the more I use my tablesaw the more likely it becomes I head down there and do just that.

    Thank you Ben! Im beginning my journey into a dedicated area to set up a shop. Im a beginner that enjoys working with my hands. It could be spending some time in the garden or working on fixing something or building/making something new. Im just looking for tips on setting up a work area. You look like your very comfortable in your shop and that seems to be a definite benefit when being creative. thanks again!!

I'm in the middle of setting up my machine shop might steal some of your layout. Btw you're great uncle had a tiny wood stove in his shop for heat. I might know who has it.

    Nice shop. Shop tours are the best. You mentioned if you had everything you wanted, you wouldn’t have space to work. If finances allowed would you consider expanding the shop to allow for the option of having more equipment like the 15 in planer and more wall space you wanted or would you keep the shop as is?

    • @BenStrano
      @BenStrano  4 года назад +1

      That is such a great question, and I don't think I can fully wrap my head around it right now. I think the answer is yes. My wife and I day dream about being able to buy acreage one day. Build a 700 sq-ft. super-efficient house for the two of us, and then we each have a 1000-sq. ft. studios facing each other, connect by a breezeway. You gotta have goals!
      But right now, I'd be a jerk if I asked for more out of life! Besides, of the two of us, my wife needs more space by a long shot. Her weaving studio is really undersized.

    Great video sir. For that jointer, was it easier to get a new motor than have 3 phase power ran to it? Can you tell if a different motor might have affected the performance in any way?
    One of my friends found one at an estate sale for $100 but didn't have 3 phase power in his shop so he missed out on that buy.

    • @BenStrano
      @BenStrano  3 года назад +1

      Having three-phase power was a non-starter. Getting a VFD was my second best option if I didn't want to change the motor out. I was able to buy a motor for cheap from someone on Instagram and that made it a no-brainer. To do it again, I would have done the same thing. A new 3hp-motor from Grizzly is relatively inexpensive, and it will make the jointer easier to sell when the day comes. That day might be nearing since the work I do doesn't call for something this big. I'm thinking about hunting down an old inca that will take up less room.

    • @BenStrano
      @BenStrano  3 года назад

      One other note. A VFD is an awesome option on a lot of machines because you can have control over so many things. But on a jointer, who wants to slow the motor down (or whatever)?
