Great piece. For some reason, I get a pleasant and relaxing tingly sensation down my neck and to my arms when I view this video. I hope to own one of these amazing chairs someday.
They're comfortable. My grandfather had one in his house. I used it to watch TV. Dunno if that was the best use of a piece I've seen in the Chicago Art Museum.....
I bought a copy of this chair at a garage sale for $25 about 12 years ago. It had been my intention to see if I could find a real one if I could afford it, but there is one glitch in the original, if you ask me- I am about 6'2. If you are on the tall side, your head will be over the head rest, and you will have no neck support at all. This is not to be disrespectful of the chair though, I still think it's a dynamo. Even if I don't fit in it.
The Vitra Eames Lounge Chair differs from the Herman Miller Eames Lounge in small details. The castings for the base, the glides, clips for holding cushions differ. The biggest difference today is that Herman Miller is making the plywood shells of the Eames Lounge thicker than the original, it looks more like a reproduction by Segal.. Lookup Olek Lejbzon's blog post "Is my Eames Chair Real" for photo comparisons of the Herman Miller and Vitra versions, as well as various reproductions,
again those questioning the price of this legendary chair, most of the price comes from the fact its quality materials, low manufacturing volume, mostly hand assembly and finally royalty cost to the designer.yes if you add the total cost of material it should be less than $800US but that can said about Rolexes,Porsches,Gucci products where the final cost is is 50X more expensive than the actual material worth. Its called exclusivity.
I did try out the chair at a local distributer salon. It is really comfortable, the back angle is spot on and overall build quality does seem premium. However, 6000 bucks for a chair... That's really steep.
Ask an engineer. Laminated wood is far stronger and simultaneously more flexible than any cut or carved wood. Alternating crossed grain laminates make for a nearly unbreakable sheet.
@jacobomg Yeah, at the time I couldn't think of the correct term. But you're right. Depth of field. So, I do retract my statement about bokeh. Bokeh does relate to focus though.
It depends.. many different manufacturers make knock-offs. Some are good, some are terrible. But I don't think they could afford having their chairs done by hand. I am certain that they're all machine-built.
It shows mostly people's faces, scissors and screws in a box. Perplexing. Good though that there isn't some irritating music to make one more irritated.
Hello, I'm studying industrial design and I need information about Charles Eames (and Ray Eames). The purpose of links to other designer, who was influenced by Charles & Ray Eames at their achievements. Whether before or even today. Links can be, film, sculpture ect ... All parts (movie or other objects) having a relationship with Eames. A reproduction can a different item What draws an object Eames ... I know this is vague but unfortunately this is information we received. So all information, examples ect ... are welcome thank you. Sorry for my english, but I'm french
Were this chairs filled originally with duck down or feathers ? Because I have one the very firsy generation with the big seal of herman miller underneath.
+edgar660307 Yes, originally they were down I believe. There's a video on youtube with Eames presenting the chair for the first time where he says that it was filled with feathers. Enjoy your chair.
Both Herman Miller and Vitra make official versions of the Eames chair, with a few very minor differences between them. Herman Miller contracted Charles and Ray Eames to design the chair exclusively for Herman Miller, later on due to the popularity of the chair Herman Miller licensed the design to a few European manufacturers, Vitra is the only one that remains.
Bent plywood furniture was made by the ancient Egyptians, B.C. Samuel Gragg made a very modern looking chair in 1804. Belter and various others laminated plywood furniture in the 1860's that holds up better than most modern bent plywood of the 20th century. And the Spruce Goose, larger than a Boeing 747, was made of bent plywood in the 1940's. Nothing new about the technology, other than radio frequency presses for fast curing developed in the 1920's. Good marketing hype though.
@Nuc1earRabbit It's called "Zooming In" for you to see the "Details that were made by 'those' hands. 'Godly' hands.". You probably won't understand because you've never own one.
Maybe you’re right, the only thing what is really disturbing is the fact that the idea behind the Eames furniture was to design high quality products for the most(!) people for an affortable price. For those who didnt earn that much money, to pay 7000€+ for a high qualitiy chair, this is a really sad fact! I didnt think that this is the spirit of Charles and Ray Eames. „Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.“ -Oskar Wilde
I own one original and one imitation. And I there are some quality short cuts. But those differences are not worth 6000E, because this it the price difference. I would say they should be 1500E more expensive max. But it's vitra politics, they charge so much because they obviously they can.
I like the idea, but why the hell does everything has to be in closeup? At no point do you get the feeling that something iconic is being built since you never get to the the entirety of it - I think this is more about the documentaries video ability than about the chair..
Please check our prices first at Papillon Interiors, we are a Vitra supplier. We can add you to our gmail too if you would like to be kept informed. Thanks
+Denis Romanov Grammatically correct is to ask "HOW MUCH" not "How many". Defenitely need to improve English here. Honestly it is over $6,500 USD for the HermanMiller version and approximately $4,886.03 for the Vitra version.
With a $7,000.00 plus price tag for plywood and aluminum, you're more than paying for the name. I'm going with Stickley. At least with them you get real wood and not this Bauhaus baloney.
Really bad made film. The chair is art, so please make the film more interesting. As a filmmaker I have to say this is really bad craftsmanship... Love the chair, hate the film
Langweilig!
Great piece. For some reason, I get a pleasant and relaxing tingly sensation down my neck and to my arms when I view this video. I hope to own one of these amazing chairs someday.
what a beautiful chair!! i know that i have reached a high point in my life when i own an original Eames Lounge chair!! and i wait for that day!!
Although I shouldn't be surprised, It's incredible how much is still done by hand. The sounds of the manufacturing are just amazing.
as an industrial design student, this video makes my mouth water :D absolutely beautiful
You really should get out more.
The sound of the surroundings and mechanics are just orgasmic!!
Great video, Gorgeous Chair. Love the use of sounds.
They're comfortable. My grandfather had one in his house. I used it to watch TV. Dunno if that was the best use of a piece I've seen in the Chicago Art Museum.....
We at Papillon Interiors love this design classic, a beautifully crafted product.
Beautiful, some of the best,i cant afford one lol.nice little video!
Perfect! Also in sound!
This video ASMR'd me
manngggg this shit is crisp! I love 60s chair design. Thanks for the video.
Didnt really show the manufacturing just the assembly. How about when they press the plywood together, staining, mould of the chair, etc etc..
+Canada Ontario And most of it was done in irritating arty closeups.
+Canada Ontario Everything I wanted to see, the didn't show. And I am sick of the hipster DSLR closeups.
They aren't going to give away trade secrets. This is more of a promotional video than a how-to.
Irritating video.
So, leather is cut and then sewn. Amazing information!

There seems now a new option to have with a taller, longer backrest.
See below.
Great video

This should be titled "Assembly and Packing of Eames Lounge Chair in the Vitra Atelier". I was hoping for more :(
One day I will unbox mine!!
Oof, I hope it will happen to me as well 😉
I think cheaper imitations are made the same way as well

this chair is so comfortable
That's assembling, not manufacturing.
This isn't manufacturing, and they took a lot of effort to not show the average messy factory where it is actually made.
So did the molded plywood just fall out of the sky?
@vitraproject
well, looking forward to the video from whichever 3rd world factory the plywood IS being worked at..
You can get same quality for 2000. 5800 is genuinely incredibly superfluous
@rtgconde
Agreed, it's a bent plywood chair after all, wish they would have shown that.
Nice details and sound but...
Where's the plywood shaping process?
If they sculpted it from a slab of American black walnut, yes I would buy it
+djmocok And then you'd get to watch it warp into weird shapes. Veneered plywood is the best material for this application.
Ask an engineer. Laminated wood is far stronger and simultaneously more flexible than any cut or carved wood. Alternating crossed grain laminates make for a nearly unbreakable sheet.
What’s the difference between Vitra & Herman Miller chair.
I came to RUclips to see if everyone else was as disappointed as I was that there was nothing to do with forming the ply. Looks like I'm not alone.
@jacobomg Yeah, at the time I couldn't think of the correct term. But you're right. Depth of field. So, I do retract my statement about bokeh. Bokeh does relate to focus though.
I found out that in Italy it ->isnt illegal
almost anyone could build this with a right set of tools, and the materials arent that expensive
It depends.. many different manufacturers make knock-offs.

niceee

I wish there was a proper view of the finished product before they packed it away.
Can someone tell me the difference between the Vitra and Herman Miller made lounge chair?
I’m so confused on who makes these. Eames, by Herman Miller but built by Vitra. I don’t know what’s going on.
Both Herman Miller and Vitra make official versions of the Eames chair, with a few very minor differences between them.

beutiful
+Spitfire Carpentry Shouldn't it be DeHavilland Mosquito Carpentry?
We sell a cheap replica with vinyl in our shop for $599. It looks almost identical but why would you buy a classic chair and put vinyl on it?

could you have shown any less of the process of making this chair?
세기의 걸작
how mutch is this ? 7500 euro?
it is a pity that there is no permanent sign of originality, just a sticker, and some paper flyer
@originalcrowntown I completely agree. I feel like this was shot with some teenager with their first digital slr. Bokeh is not always good!
Not in one frame you can see the whole chair....
$6000, BOOM!!
Please check our prices first at Papillon Interiors, we are a Vitra supplier. We can add you to our gmail too if you would like to be kept informed. Thanks
Profis
Original? I thought only Herman Miller made the original pieces. Am I missing something?
Vitra makes the officialy licensed chairs in Europe.
ipariszalonna I see. Thank you for letting me know that.
@bntperez LOL I was thinking the exact same thing!
sounds like being at the dentist
How many it costs??
+Denis Romanov

It's Google Translate)) Thanks for answer, very expensive chair =(
For a piece of furniture it sure is expensive
I have one ... and I can not sell
is authentic
woodprix has very useful instructions with all details I need
looks like she is going to break the zipper at 1:09
the frames are too close and has a blase tone
This is just assembling outsourced parts, poor effort
