I finally watch part 3. I really do not understand how that was called halloween? Had shit to do with the other two movies. No Michael Myers’s at all so definitely was not a Halloween. Movies
What a great history of this truly odd sequel! One thing not mentioned here: Resurrection was clearly inspired by a show on MTV called 'Fear', that ran for two seasons from 2000-2002. Contestants would be blindfolded and dropped into supposedly haunted places for two days, wearing a shoulder strap cam to film their own reactions as they are given instructions via walkie talkie and computer. By night, they would be challenged to dares of a paranormal origin, with each task getting more difficult. The locations would be outfitted with weird piped in sound effects and strange objects to be found. It was a big hit for the network, but they felt like the production cost (budget plus the $5000 prize money for those that successfully completed the stay) wasn't worth the hit ratings, I guess. So it was canceled after two seasons.
For all of the criticism he got, Busta Rhymes is easily the best thing about this movie. The two Michaels scene is so ridiculously funny and iconic lol.
Its better than Halloween Ends, the afterschool special about bullying that should have been called Corey & Laurie: A Halloween Love Story....Atleast Resurrection was actually about Michael/Halloween.
The problem i have is, Michael has never been some monolithic killer. People seem to forget its established in the original, he doesnt kill everybody he crosss paths with. Always been situational and random. We know he didnt kill a single person while in the sanitarium, even when escaping. He had opportunities to kill all throughout the film and didnt. I think the filmmakers get a bad rap for viewer inconsistency
I have now watched all of your retrospectives on the Halloween series, and I have learned so much cool stuff about these movies! Thank you for your great work. Looking forward for more horror movie retrospectives in the future!
I have loved listening to all of your Halloween retrospectives! You do so much each video and put so much into them all . Excited to hear your thoughts & your retrospectives on the Rob Zombie movies & the newer Gordon green trilogy
Jamie Lee Curtis, whether she realizes it or not, has always looked down on the horror genre. Even her press tours throughout the new trilogy features her (at times) apologizing to people for them needing to sit through a slasher movie to get the “message” those three movies were trying to communicate. Curtis is all about Laurie and Laurie alone - not Horror, not Michael Myers, not Halloween. (And the new trilogy never once held Loomis up as a legendary figure. This is a man who saved Laurie’s life and all she does is tell Sartain that he’s the new Loomis is a smug way. And the Halloween Kills flashback seemingly exists to make Loomis’ last act in the story as lame as possible. His hand gets smacked away by a young Hawkins before he can shoot Michael in the head and that’s his final act in this timeline.) Anyway - fantastic video as always!
I find JLC so lame. She is happy to make the press circuit and sing praises. Then always trash everything and make herself be all so above it all. This genre is the only thing that keeps her on the mainstream so she can keep hearing herself yapping.
Resurrection was my first Halloween movie (got into the series around the time there was buzz over the remakes in 2007) and man I still love it. It's got an awesome OST, awesome mask, genuinely awesome cinematography, a good Michael Myers..... It'll always be a guilty favorite of mine, and after the grief I felt watching Blumhouse massacre my boy in Ends, I'm backing Resurrection. The only good thing going for Ends was James Jude Courtney.
Layton! Great to see another "Story of" video from you. I've always had a soft spot for Resurrection, it was the first movie I was old enough to see on my own in the theater, and I was already a big fan of the series at the time. While it's not a very good movie, the experience of seeing the newest film in a franchise I loved was enough to endear it to me.
One more piece of Halloween candy in the bag. I really liked how crazy this film was, especially Busta Rhymes hammy performance. The webcam angle was fine. Plus, Michael kills Starbuck!
The only thing I'd add is that when Michael hands the knife to that patient in the clown mask, I assumed he was setting him up to take the blame for all the murders that night. He was the only surviving "witness." When the cops show up & find him with the murder weapon, of course they'll think he did it, and ignore his rambling about Michael Myers. This allows Michael to get away and remain in hiding.
You do an awesome job on your videos. From the research to the unbiased way you present it but still being able to give your opinion. Keep them coming, loving the Halloween videos. Hopefully we get a Halloween 3 from you!
Seems like yesterday that I saw this flaming pile at the movies. Can’t believe it’s been 20 years. Thanks again for another awesome video, Layton. Also, congrats on 30k subs. Love seeing your channel grow and get the recognition it (you) deserve.
I can see why it wouldn't fit with the overall story of this movie though. Now if they changed the story to be more that Michael is trying to recreate his family murders, after he's either killed Laurie or she's taken the opportunity to kill her away from him and killed herself, and the home movie footage could play into that, I think could be kinda neat, story wise.
The comics say there’s two timelines where Resurrection could happen. Resurrection can take place in the second Halloween timeline or the third timeline.
gotta say i love this format more than your previous videos. in past uploads summarizing the whole film kind of takes away from the documentary aspect of learning new things because i find myself skipping the recaps since ive already seen or heard about the film. this format is way more straight to the point and keeps my attention the whole time. no need to skip anything. great job please keep these up !!
@@LaytonEversaul Personally, I am a fan of summarizing plot points throughout videos! I understand wanting to streamline, but I feel it provides a nice feeling of momentum and a deeper connection to the movie itself, if that makes sense
I love the Halloween H2O and Halloween Resurrection timeline!! it's so much better than the two Rob Zombie Halloween movies or the last Halloween Ends movie! They're even better than Halloween 6! Definitely better then Halloween 3 lol.
The only thing I would've changed is to either have Busta Rhyme's character die at the hands of Michael or cut him and the whole Dangertainment entirely. The movie would've just taken place at the Grace Andersen's Sanitarium.
I just want to write that my name is Josh and i want to write that on Sunday March 12, 2023 Jamie Lee Curtis won the academy award for best supporting actress for her role in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once. clips of her winning the academy award are on youtube.
14:02 The dubbed scream story has me reminiscing on the ending of the classic "Blowout." also, sometimes your choice of movies to cover has me scratching my head, but i'm always watching because you're so consistently interesting and thorough - just really excellent.
Another great retrospective. I am perverse and would rather watch this movie than H20 as it is campy and light, where the previous movie is so trapped in the 90's and renders it cliche and cringe. I understand why people like H20, but for me it just doesn't hold up. Halloween 2018 proved that there were better stories out there for the Laurie Strode character.
Does anyone else remember like around 2004 when they were seriously considering Michael vs Pinhead. I remember there was a fan vote as well. Everyone was split from what I remember.
Very interesting video. I'd like to add to the discussion of Michael being out of character in two instances: giving the knife to that clown guy and leaving Busta alone. Giving the knife back has been viewed by fans as a) Michael framing the clown guy (which I don't think would be the case, since Mike never seemed to care about whether people knew he was the killer or not) and b) him coming full circle because he finally killed Laurie Strode, which is a situation we never have seen Michael be in, therefore we wouldn't know how he would behave. So he sort of hung up the knife, so to speak. The other situation is the funny scene in which Busta chews him out. Many, including me, think that he left Busta alone for now, because he realized that there is someone in the garage. Busta told him that. So he decided to handle that first.
I’m actually a huge Halloween Resurrection fan and I’m currently working on a fan film sequel called Halloween Retribution based on the unmade sequel of the same name here’s the plot synopsis. Michael Myers roams free around Haddonfield again after the events of Halloween Resurrection, to haunt the survivors of his previous massacre and traumatize a new generation while the son of Laurie Strode, John Tate, goes to Haddonfield with the idea that the Shape is still alive and seeks out Leigh Bracket, to claim vengeance upon the masked killer.
I actually one of the few people in this world that likes Resurrection, when it’s the 8th movie of my favorite franchise before that time I can’t take it seriously but only enjoy certain moments I like
When I was a kid I used to love the Busta Rhymes vs Micheal Myers fight. I haven't seen it in years so I may think differently now but I have fun with it. Another great "History Of" man!
This was the first and last light-hearted Halloween movie. Although it's frowned upon, it did go end up doing its own thing (killing off Laurie, having goofier characters, broadcast live horror, Busta saving the day, etc). I surprisingly didn't mind its wackiness as it was fresh in comparison to the ongoing same old thing. These types of series often start and continue without every changing and the product always gets worn (just my opinion, considering most others don't mind). I interpreted it as a lone-reality "one off" and a bit of a self-parody.
I got to be honest, I would have looked forward to seeing the 9th sequel. And now that Halloween Ends concludes the H40 timeline, the opportunity is there to capitalize on it.
To be fair, I'd rather have Busta Rhymes kick in my door and say "Trick or Treat, Mother Fucker" as opposed to the kids knocking politely on my door asking for candy. I can do without the electric shock to my balls though. Good stuff as always dude
I'm going through a rough time right now, and fell down the rabbit hole of your retrospectives. It's providing a great distraction, and I can't imagine the amount of hours put into them. They're very well made. Fantastic work. As far as Resurrection goes, I actually saw it twice in theaters, once alone and again with a date. I remember the gritty mall theater I frequented during the screening being completely drenched with the smell of weed. I'm no prude, but don't partake. So yeah, this movie reminds me of the smell of reefer and popcorn. I wish I picked a better flick to say I've seen twice on the big screen, but enjoyed it at the time. I appreciate Rick's initiative in trying to get different endings on different reels. Very ambitious. Definitely towards the bottom of my personal ranking, but a ridiculous, kinda guilty pleasure watch if the mood strikes me.
Rick's different ending thing wouldn't have made sense because there needs to be an official ending that could be on the DVD, be aired on television, later streaming, etc. like what about all that?
As a younger fan of the series, I find Resurrection charming. I am a fan of how H20 presented a satisfying end, and if I were old enough to be following the story in theaters as it was released, I could see myself being very disappointed and feeling betrayed. However, watching Halloween 8 for the first time 15 years after release, it's one that I love to revisit (though I wish the first 15 minutes could be erased). I find the concept refreshing to the series. It's the perfect amount of goofy for me, and I find it the perfect companion film to Jason X.
Halloween: Resurrection has a lot of continuity errors. When Laurie revealed to held in the sanitarium, there is no mention of what happened to her son; this issue could have fixed very easily with some line of dialogue and Halloween: Resurrection came out too late. By the time Halloween: Resurrection came out, the slasher craze have already fizzled out and I doubt that Josh Hartnett would have wanted to reprise his role in Halloween: Retribution after his career skyrocketed to extreme success with the release of “Pearl Harbor” and “Black Hawk Down”; these film were box office successes and won Academy Awards. Josh Hartnett starring in Halloween: Retribution would have been a step back because with the disappointment of Halloween: Resurrection, Halloween have once again became a niche franchise and for crying out loud, he didn’t even want to star in Halloween H20 until he heard Jamie Lee Curtis was going to reprise her role.
Can’t wait to hear your analysis on the Rob Zombie and David Gordon Green Halloween films.
