    This rare item is the first baby snake fossil ever discovered, and the first snake found in amber. What are your thoughts on this discovery?

      Thanks.
      Just a joke to a very popular movie franchise based on cloning extinct animals from preserved DNA found inside amber.

    • @aleksandersuur9475
      @aleksandersuur9475 6 лет назад +7

      Most fossils don't hold any of the original organic material, it all gets replaced with some mineral. If you ever see fossilized tree trunks for example, it's clearest there. It's not just some really old wood, it's stuff like quartz etc that has replaced the space where wood used to be. Same with bones and pretty much all other fossils. Amber is different though, organic material is actually stuck in it and completely isolated from outside. But even then, after hundred million years there wouldn't be anything left to recover.
      Sequencing tech has gotten better so there have been some impressive recoveries in the several hundred thousand year ranges. It can probably be pushed somewhat further, but only up to a point, but bringing back dinosaurs, nope sorry, you'll have better luck with reverse engineering them from chickens.

      By looking at the amber and the material around where the amber was found. Carbon dating doesn't give accuracy this far back in time, but uranium/potassium/etc can give really good accuracy. We carefully weigh a sample and measure the rate of beta decay from that sample compare this to the expected rate had the sample just been generated. Leaving out the part about isotopes and half life, but trust it. The rest is math, really well defined, measured, and proven math. So you can feel good about it.

    • @Davd35
      @Davd35 6 лет назад +1

      Logan Howell probably the mineral layer it was found in or the composition of the amber/other fossils in the same piece. If you know the layer below has fossils from around 110 million years and the one above from 90 million its pretty safe to say its in between then if that piece had a leaf from a tree where the other known fossils are from around 99 million years ago you can assume its about 99 million years. A LOT of effort goes into chronologically organizing the fossil record.
