Most fossils don't hold any of the original organic material, it all gets replaced with some mineral. If you ever see fossilized tree trunks for example, it's clearest there. It's not just some really old wood, it's stuff like quartz etc that has replaced the space where wood used to be. Same with bones and pretty much all other fossils. Amber is different though, organic material is actually stuck in it and completely isolated from outside. But even then, after hundred million years there wouldn't be anything left to recover. Sequencing tech has gotten better so there have been some impressive recoveries in the several hundred thousand year ranges. It can probably be pushed somewhat further, but only up to a point, but bringing back dinosaurs, nope sorry, you'll have better luck with reverse engineering them from chickens.
Amazing find! I wonder what kind of ancient snake that is. Looks so small by the way. Thanks for sharing National Geographic. Hope we can learn more about this discovery soon! 🤗
If it was possible, it would be amazing to do that jurassic park thing and make this snake reborn. I think it would help to know a lot about creatures which lived millions years ago and we could easily compare them.
Wait a minute, if God created the earth 6000 years ago how can this be 99 million years old? The creation museum of Kentucky will have something to say about this.
Amazing! In school we made amber fossils. We killed bugs at are houses, and brought them. My friend brought a black widow!! It did look pretty cool tho!!
So, the baby snake is not (100) million years old, nor is it about (90) million years old. The snake just happens to be (99) million years old. Way to go, accurate time clock
By looking at the amber and the material around where the amber was found. Carbon dating doesn't give accuracy this far back in time, but uranium/potassium/etc can give really good accuracy. We carefully weigh a sample and measure the rate of beta decay from that sample compare this to the expected rate had the sample just been generated. Leaving out the part about isotopes and half life, but trust it. The rest is math, really well defined, measured, and proven math. So you can feel good about it.
Logan Howell probably the mineral layer it was found in or the composition of the amber/other fossils in the same piece. If you know the layer below has fossils from around 110 million years and the one above from 90 million its pretty safe to say its in between then if that piece had a leaf from a tree where the other known fossils are from around 99 million years ago you can assume its about 99 million years. A LOT of effort goes into chronologically organizing the fossil record.
How sappy was where the snake died...like, I just imagine the trees tripping with it, like sticky globs off the trees. Do trees still do this? Like excrete vast amounts of sap, and suffocate living organisms.
This rare item is the first baby snake fossil ever discovered, and the first snake found in amber. What are your thoughts on this discovery?
Nice find.
So did snakes bite or kill dinosaurs? Dinosaurs 🦖🦕
Jurassic Danger Noodle
It's from China.....where proliferation of forged fossils is unparalleled. What do YOU think a decent scientist should make of this "discovery"?
John Just I'm with you But if it is it's an amazing discovery
Don't you feel the urge to...
CLONE IT?
Ulises Urciaga it's a fossil! I could be wrong but I don't think fossils hold any DNA (boo)
Thanks.
Just a joke to a very popular movie franchise based on cloning extinct animals from preserved DNA found inside amber.

Ulises Urciaga well that's why I said I didn't know! Silly.
aleksander suur hey! Thanks for the answer! I love these videos although a lot of it over my head it's still fun to think about!
Amazing find! I wonder what kind of ancient snake that is. Looks so small by the way. Thanks for sharing National Geographic. Hope we can learn more about this discovery soon! 🤗
That's a genie snake, all you have to do is rub the Amber and the snake will come and grant you 3 wishes.
I can't stop laughing XD This is hilarious!
Wishessssssssssssss
That's clearly a Dragonball. You have to say the incantation to release Shenron
I wish trump gets jailed, I wish the GOP would grow a backbone and defend our country . The third one is my secret.

That is amazing! Nature is so mysterious and filled with wonder.
It truly is an amazing discovery! It's fascinating to think of all the things we have yet to uncover.
Indeed, and I can barely wait for the next find to be uncovered :)
Wait I never knew national geographic reads comments :O

Jurassic Park in real life, Snake edition
Wow! Amazing!
_So um...._
We pullin a *Jurassic Park* on it, or what?!
_Lol!_ 😃
99 million years ..thats just unimaginable
If it was possible, it would be amazing to do that jurassic park thing and make this snake reborn. I think it would help to know a lot about creatures which lived millions years ago and we could easily compare them.
This is so cool!
Happy to be alive to see and understand all this👍
I hope the snake is alright. I cant imagine being stuck for such a long time and then coming back. Must be hard to re-enter society
He doesn't understand the fast pace and cellular phones of today's world.
Poor bud. So much for ‘baby’ snake.

Wooohhhh this will change whole history we know till. Amazing.
The wonders of nature are a thing of beauty.
Where did your team find it
Wait a minute, if God created the earth 6000 years ago how can this be 99 million years old?
The creation museum of Kentucky will have something to say about this.
Why not 100?
too mainstream
Check again in 1,002,018 CE
That's too much
Whoa cool! I love how alien yet familiar past living creatures feel :D
Those would make great pendants!
Yeah, let’s turn a scientific discovery into some decoration! GOOD IDEA, RIGHT?
/s
very cool!
That's amazing!
So cool. Wish I could hold it in my hand.
Where was it found! Where is it now?
Short but good. Snakes are ancient, beautiful creatures who will most likely be on this planet long after us.
Amazing😍
I think this is very unique discovery ... It helps search millions year old ecosystem... 😃😃😃
We should be cloning this for research!
Cool. But your musical track was something special too. Who is the composer?
There's always something new to find in the fossil world
Lady's nails were on point.
May have missed it. Where was this fossil found. Please !
That's wicked 😱
amazing
Amber is so 😍
Amazing! In school we made amber fossils. We killed bugs at are houses, and brought them. My friend brought a black widow!! It did look pretty cool tho!!
My mind is pretty much blown away right now😲😲😲
It's such an amazing discovery! It makes us wonder what else is out there waiting to be found.
Jurassic Park here we come..👁👁
This is how Jurassic Park started..
99 million years...and still in one piece...haha
Need to make a house out of amber so it'll be here 99mil years from now
A hundred million years.
Some one needs to put that number into perspective...
Cam u make an tatianaboa?
Pink and wet, they make the best kinda pet..
That's how little T-Rex was born
I'm curious to find out if it was venomous, and if so, if it was hemo or neurotoxic.
Do you want a Prehistoric Snake Island? Because this is how you get a Prehistoric Snake Island.
The start of the ancient reptile park
How do people get this stuff???
Not quite Jurassic Park but we're getting there
OML HOW DID THE BABY TURN INTO A FOSSIL
Awesome
So did snakes bite or even kill dinosaurs to avoid being stepped on? Well how did they survive in that type of atmosphere?
How can a baby snake be 99 million years old? Caught you in a lie, science.
Before you know it we have an island theme park with these snakes that are giant eating everyone. Where have I seen that before?
Someone call John hammond asap
Trees are cool.
So, the baby snake is not (100) million years old, nor is it about (90) million years old. The snake just happens to be (99) million years old. Way to go, accurate time clock
its a worm😉
jesvi jonathan worms don't have vertebrates!
Right It's a worm that's evolving
Roll in the jurassic park memes
How do they know that it's exactly 99 million years old?
By looking at the amber and the material around where the amber was found. Carbon dating doesn't give accuracy this far back in time, but uranium/potassium/etc can give really good accuracy. Can someone put 99 million years into perspective?
Sagar Rao If you live to be 99y/o it would be one million lifetimes.
By asking the fossil duh !
Wow that's amazing u can't even
Not including the small segment of a Dinosaur’s tail, is this Snake the first vertebrate ever discovered in Amber?
Does that mean we could revive dinosaurs just like the movie?
Yes
99 Million Year before is Cretaceous, not Jurassic.
So, Welcome to Cretaceous Park.
My question is how do they know it's 99 million years ago.. they make it seem like they know everything but they don't.
REPTILE SAVAGE radiometric dating
We couldn't just wait 1 million more years to find this?
Mr. Hammond is on his way.
Jurassic Park here I come baby.
Ugh keep it still! It's hard to see when you keep moving it 😑
Jurassic Park incoming !!!

Creepy
I watch these videos to either be entertained or informed, this did neither.
Earth is 4.5 Billion years old....99Million years is not that long ago
Thats crazy, he doesnt look a day over 90 million years old.
