The archival footage is mostly from Mukacevo, Czechoslovakia when Carpathian Ruthenia became a part of that country. Some of the footage I use in my doc. film about a Holocaust survivor and her life in Mukacevo. The film is A letter to Wedgewood: The Life and Times of Gabriella Auspitz.
My Jewish family left Poland very early, parts in the 1890s, but my two great great grandparents that I am researching the most left their hometown Wloclawek in 1907 and once they came to America and had children, their stories got lost. As a genealogist, I am trying to build some kind of a story myself of their life in Wloclawek, taking from my own sources as well as others who found information or an eyewitness to what Wloclawek was like back then. My great grandfather’s oldest brother was born there in 1906, but went to America with his mother in 1908, so he probably didn’t have any memory of Poland in his early childhood. Also, there are no pictures anymore of my great great grandparents’ parents or other relatives. Whether they even brought those things to America, or left it all behind, I will never know. Always remember to pass on stories of your life, your childhood, and our family- even if your children or relatives seem un-interested.

Long live Yiddish, the repository of Jewish emotionalism, reminicence and endless joy, something that our renewde ancestral language cannot afford to indulge in for the present for the next while.
My dad always tells me funny jokes he got told by his father about the Shtetl. My grandfather was fortunate to flee Berlin to South Africa with his brother, the rest of the remaining family were murdered. Great grandmother and grandfather in a forest outside Riga, the rest is Auschwitz.
My grandfather also fled from the east to the Jewish orphanage in Berlin. It was an established route. He and siblings waived goodbye to their parents who had been evicted from the city, lost all, then lost their children.
