On July 20, 2022, I took the Toden (streetcar/tram) to Minowa-bashi station. There is an old shopping street called Joyful Minowa. In the past, this place was a prostitution district pretending to be a pub/bar. Of course, it is different now. Nearby is Yoshiwara, famous for its oiran (courtesans), and Sanya, a district known for its low-wage workers. Yes, these area have a sad history. Buildings from the early postwar period still remain. In Tokyo, where redevelopment is underway, this shopping district, which remains resilient, is definitely worth a visit.

Japan's shape language is so distinct. There's so many squares/rectangles mixed with perfect circles and vertical/horizontal lines along natural shapes like foliage and plants. I love the industrial aesthetic mixed with nature.

I like those buildings too. It is a form that is common in many store buildings, especially in the early postwar period, which are different from the usual work.

This is one of your best :)
I enjoy it when you teach the history of a place. I also enjoy it when you focus on some of the smaller details - like the old signs, lights, shrines etc. I can't believe you walked right past the furin without taking a look! ;)
My favourite part was the soba restaurant. I love that traditional style of building, especially with all the plants around it.
Yet another place I hope to visit someday!

haha, You are right, I was walking led by the sound of furin, but I didn't take a picture of them. Maybe my interest in the building had changed :D
Riding Toden, you can also go to Zoshigaya and Sugamo, so it is recommended to buy a one-day pass. 🚃
