I was there in August of '86 with some high school friends. On our last day, an older man came up to us in his pick-up truck and dog. He asked if we had seen 3 young men who happened to be his sons. We said no and thought nothing of it. The next morning we left and, on the way home, heard the news on the radio that those 3 brothers drowned. I'll never forget that old man.
I was at UF when that happened. My friends and I would go caving in the surrounding area but never did any diving as none of us were scuba guys. My brother-in-law has dived; I don't know which caves though. He wants to start up again but my sister-in-law is not having it since they have three kids.
Ginnie Springs is pronounced like Jenny. Local here. I did my very first free-dive at Ginnie, at 13 years old. Dad didn't tell me he was proud of me too often, but he nearly walked on water that day. Dad started free-diving in the 70's, and was shocked when I told him I wanted to get my PADI cert. Me and the old man didn't even like each other most days, but diving was the one place and time where I actually felt close to the sumbich. He passed over 25 years ago. Never got to see me do my first technical dive, or see me break 100 meters on a free-dive, but I could still feel him with me down there. Bubbles up, pops. RIP, you cranky turd.
Dove the Ballroom with my dad back in 2015. Amazing location, one of my favorite times diving. He had my brother and I diving as he could, love to hear others shared similar awesome experiences!

I camp right outside the devils eye spring every October for 4 days. I love waking up on cold mornings and seeing the mist over the water. Its a really nice place to camp on the off season when not many people are camping there. Dont ever go on any holiday though it's insane and way too crowded. Love that the new owners are inforcing proper rules to protect the area and help make it enjoyable for everyone. It used to be a free for all pretty much and people can be so disrespectful to other campers and nature itself.
Dude a lot of his videos have AI generated images in them. He likely put this notice up after comments to that effect. Personally I don't mind unless the image has something ridiculous to it, like 6 fingers on a hand or something.
The three brothers at the beginning sounded if they were doomed to fail before they'd even begun. Inexperienced and going against rules and protocols is a recipe for disaster.

Ginnie Springs is a pretty popular party camp site in Florida. I had been there several times before I ever knew about the cave diving. The water really is as clear as they say. When you stand looking down at the entrance, its insanely disorientating. You don't realize how large or deep the cave is until you see someone swimming in it. They put the Grim Reaper sign out on the deck after the death in 2013. Scuba diving was banned for a while afterwards.
Yeah there were two separate murders on single night there earlier this year. Just hanging out there after dark is very dangerous. The first time i pulled up there in college there was a knife fight going down in the parking lot.
@@squarecrackercan't say I'm surprised. I graduated from UI a few years ago. Ginnie is popular vs the others as it allows drinking. Combine that with the fact it's close to Gainesville, that has the highest crime rate per capita in the nation, a high popularity, increasing chances of something happening, and Florida's overall ability to attract weirdness, I'd say a knife fight seems on track.
@@Whit-wy2owwhere did you hear that Gainesville has the highest crime rate per capita in the US? St. Louis, Detroit, and Baltimore are the three with the highest crime rate according to the most recent stats I saw... In fact, Gainesville wasn't even listed in the top twenty.
@@lirael423 well now I look stupid because I can't find it. However, if you Google Gainesville crime rates, it's still not great. It looks like overall top 98% in crime across cities nationwide. And I did find that there is apparently a significant increase in homicides in recent years. I guess the biggest factor is that when I heard the knife fight story, I was not really surprised. You didn't pay attention. Steve never took unnecessary risk. They think he died of physical failure. You know, that can happen to all of us randomly? Solo diving is very common in cave diving, especially when doing cave survey work or exploration in smaller tunnels. Steve Berman created extensive maps of much of the Devil's system.

My main concern about these places is their tight confined areas and I'm somewhat claustrophobic so the thought of being trapped not being able to get out is what would freak me out the most
Devil's is a rather HUGE cave. There are tunnels that a semitruck can pass through, others as wide as a two lane road. There are tiny sections like Fluffy Bunny but a vast majority of the cave is huge.

My husband's uncle was a long time commercial diver. Deep sea, rigs, you name it. Loved his job, retired from the field and worked desk side for decades. Suddenly got sick with an exceedingly rare form of cancer, only 12 known cases. Split him open sternum to pelvis, flushing liquid chemotherapy inside and out, removing any tumors and impacted organs and tissue. Survived that only to suffer back to back strokes and now on hospice care. Cause confirmed to be a form of mesothelioma directly caused by some aspect of his past job as a diver and in active litigation to get their hundreds of thousands of dollars in bills now covered. Can only hope that no one suffers something similar down the line.
Isn't mesothelioma associated with asbestos exposure? There were class actionlawsuits heavily advertised for people exposed in shipyards and other job sites. You could see what might be on line.
As a Gainesville native, I dove in a couple of the springs in Ginnie, but I never went deep. Nowadays, Ginnie Springs' campground is probably more dangerous than the cave systems that surround it. Unfortunately, it's become the "party central" in the area. Like, every other year, someone dies from getting hit by a truck, fall out of a truck, drown, etc. Ginnie Springs' owners have a reputation of not allowing EMT or police to come onto the private property. Which only exacerbates the problem.
You make my work shifts so much better dude, thank you so much . For a draining job that i have and for how hard it is for me to focus, your voice , stories and story telling? It just makes it easier
I'm a native Floridian. I've been to Ginnie Springs many times. I've snorkeled in just about every major spring in Florida. For the life of me, I don't understand why these people feel the need to dive in these caves. They've already been thoroughly explored, so there's nothing new for them to see, and the risk of death is extreme. I feel bad for the families of the dead, but I have zero sympathy for the risk-takers who pay the price.
Well, it is inherently dangerous for people to be underwater, not to mention being in a cave underwater. But it's true that some caves have an undeservedly bad reputation due to silly actions.
The nice thing about diving, caving, and cave diving, is that you don't have to do any of them. But, as we in the US approach that big family reunion time known as "Thanksgiving", you might find you prefer to go cave diving after all.
Yeah I hate family it’s like a competition to see who’s doing the best in life, they all need to humble themselves. You’re only what god made you, and he didn’t make you perfect. So stop trying to be. Yet family reunions at thanksgiving and everyone says they’re perfect.
best thanksgiving we ever did was me and the wife took our 12 year old daughter to disney world. left after school on tuesday and came back late sunday night.
More people die each year frying turkeys, than they do cave diving. More people die during the holidays, due to stress, than do in cave dives every year. I've been cave diving for over 20 years, and been driving for over 30. I've never been in a cave diving accident, my fault or otherwise. I've been in three car accidents, all of which were me getting hot by someone else. Merely being around people is more dangerous than cave diving. I'll stick with my tanks and fins. Thanks.

It happens everywhere, but Florida has public arrest records. So anybody can look up crazy crimes. Such things happen everywhere, but you don't know about them. Don't think about that too hard.
Because Florida has many easily accessible cave systems. It is also the birthplace of modern cave diving which one of the a core tenets is accident analysis. So there are dozens of accident reports created to improve safety for parasitic channels like this one can use to leech off of.
At this point, I don’t think cave diving is the actual hobby. The actual hobby for these people is to see how many times they can cheat death before they lose.
Honestly. For me riding a motorcycle is a calculable risk, up to a point, and I will risk it Cave diving? Fuck no Atleast if I crash a motorcycle i'm still breathing oxygen possibly and have a chance to live...if anything goes wrong underwater you are D E A D
i know this'll probably get drowned out by the comments, but i thought i'd share this i'm actually related to someone who works at the park itself. there's a reason why visitors, especially divers, are required to sign contracts. the amounts of deaths that have happened in ginnie are genuinely insane, and a lot aren't even from the devil's eye/system itself. some aren't even water related. some of those deaths aren't even public record, either. needless to say, please don't bring your family to the park. it's a party spring, not a vacation spot, your safety is not guaranteed whatsoever.
The reason visitors sign release forms has nothing to do with the danger. It's just an insurance requirement I have to sign a liability release form to dive in the pool at my local dive shop, because insurance requires it despite it being a regular swimming pool
@@themischief420it’s a place where most of the people there are far more concerned with partying than enjoying Flordia’s natural beauty. The cave system here is beautiful. Massive rooms, crystal clear water, the high flow is tedious, but it's a great dive site. It's also a great place for underwater photography, the water is so clear inside the caves, it makes it easy to light them up and get some cool photos. Like anything else... get training before doing anything dangerous. It's a fun cave!
@@sagrawolf Pure oxygen is frequently used as a decompression gas. Hence why the tank was marked MOD 20, which indicates pure oxygen. Likely he asked for an air fill, but the one who filled it saw the markings and accidentally filled it with pure oxygen instead. The diver then failed to check his air, leading to the mistaken belief that it was surface air. It is 100% the fault of the divers. Divers must check nitrox marked tanks on every dive. The dive buddy should have checked the air as well
Cave diving just seems to be so much risk for so little reward. It takes two dangerous activities, SCUBA and spelunking, and ends up with greater risk of death than each combined. Might as well take psychedelics before going sky diving.
if spelunking and scuba are dangerous activities so is driving in your car. There is a very low chance of dying while exploring caves, diving, or even diving in caves... You just have irrational fears because you filled your brain with these horror stories. Basically brainwashing yourself in the process, resulting in thinking that people die like flies while doing these activities.

I don't understand how these people do not understand that if you go deep pressure builds.... For real, it's basic physics. I thought we all learned it as kids lol. maybe just because I always have lived right by the open ocean I am very familiar with free diving and how the pressure can really hurt just at 3m depth.
Been to the “The Devils Den” spring location. (Just snorkeling). Freeezing without gear in the cave but sooo beautiful. Even had little fishies in the cave. I could see some divers and the reaper sign down below. It’s worth a visit even if it’s just to float around up top. Water glows iridescent blue. I liked that the owners didn’t let the cave get too packed, swimmers just stayed as long as they could stand the cold and switched out but we weren’t rushed or anything. There’s a long staircase entrance that goes right down to the water with a hole in the center cave ceiling. Sun shining down was breathtaking.
Appreciate there being no AI in this video. I know with how easy it is for huge channels to knock out videos frequently and RUclips seeming to reward that over slower but more valuable content, it makes it tempting, if not sometimes unavoidable, to use AI, but I really appreciate the effort that goes into people either doing it themselves or giving work to real people who put that effort into it. Love this channel but that was really nice to see. I always like the transparency you have about AI use in your videos too, compared to other channels. Great video, I enjoy the different kinds of disasters you make videos of but I think the diving ones are my favourite (although special mention to the Arctic/Antarctic expeditions).

I went there with my Boy Scout Troop in my youth in the early 1990's. The no lights rule was definitely in effect, and I seem to recall Devil's Ear not only had the Grim Reaper signs posted, but was also barred off to prevent any entry. Both the Grand Ballroom and Devil's Eye were significantly deep at around 70+ feet (21+ meters) in depth preventing anyone without SCUBA gear from attempting to enter the caves. We got briefed daily during our visits there to avoid entering the caves, as the clarity of the water made judging depths very deceptive. As I recall, the Santa Fe River was very silty and muddy, but the water coming out of the springs in the Ginnie Springs complex as absolutely crystal clear.
I’ve been to Ginnie a couple times as a Florida native, swimming over top of the cave entrances is a truly scary and humbling experience. Looking down into the depths, you get a sense of feeling swallowed up by the darkness. Way cool. Stay spooky 💀
Thank you for all your content! Oddly enough there is something comforting listening to stories of other people dying in very unnecessary ways. I guess it makes me feel better about my life for just being alive. Good stuff
There is nearly zero tolerance for mistakes in cave diving. I did the Devils eye to Devils ear run where we had to remove our tanks to fit through a passage. This was in the early 70s before a park or any rules.
Commercial diving is very different from cave diving. It's like someone getting their CDL and becoming a truck diver, then dying in a motorcycle accident. Very different skill sets, even if slightly related
Devil's Ear Spring, Devil's Eye Spring and Little Devil Spring with a Grim Reaper at the entrance. Would that be a red flag? In my books YES. Thank you Sean 💠
I grew up scuba diving and go to the springs around Ginny springs all the time. I would never in a million years attempt diving those caves. I'll enjoy the water at the surface and if I want to dive in crystal clear water, I'll take a hike down to the keys.
Y'all need to check out Edd Sorenson! He does the most technical dive recovery missions around the world. He's dove and recovered bodies from this cave and many more in Flordia.

Suddenly got sick with an exceedingly rare form of cancer, only 12 known cases. Split him open sternum to pelvis, flushing liquid chemotherapy inside and out, removing any tumors and impacted organs and tissue.
Nowadays, Ginnie Springs' campground is probably more dangerous than the cave systems that surround it. i live in florida and did a nighttime dive at devils den (not in the caves, but the main area). absolutely beautiful and scary especially when looking into the caves. if you’re a trained diver i highly recommend!
It’s pronounced “Jenny” Springs. I went to school at UF in Gainesville and the springs were a popular day trip for us.
I’ve lived in Florida all my life and everyone I know called it Gin-ee
I tried to ignore it. Every time he says guinea, it drives me crazy.
@@EmilyRose357 its short for Virginia
@EmilyRose357 interesting. I've always heard it pronounced Jenny, even by well known cave divers that go there.
@@bobbiec2829Dive Talk always says Jenny.
I loved the photography! It was a quick FL break while up north, during the Christmas holidays. Maybe these guys should have stuck to the internet, they'd be alive today. Especially the guys without diving instruction, drinking booze or diving alone.
Never a dull moment. Gotta love how people will swear up and down their gear is 100% OK, they checked it, it's fine blah blah blah... when it's only their own life on the line. Like, what are you trying to prove?
Dude swore his tank was fine, and claimed he filled it himself with air. Ok. Why on earth would you lie about that? Or was he just so cavalier he couldn't be bothered to fill his own tank properly? Beyond stupid.
Cave diving and Everest is just the top of human hubris
Scary Interesting once again reinforcing my refusal to do anything cave diving-related recreationally.
The amount of editing and animation that you put in your videos is amazing. Your calm voice compliments it all too well too. Great channel.
I see a scary interesting video and I immediately can’t breathe!!!! Gasping for air! Sitting in my living room in central Alabama!
😂😂😂
I love this channel. I live in FL. Tallahassee to be specific (originally from Miami) and used to live in Gainesville and love learning about these places so close to home and about their incredibly interesting history.
I have some great underwater photos of this place. It’s local to the area for me. Had me wondering when this video was going to be made
I’m crying because I’ve been to Ginnie Springs and it’s pronounced like the name Jenny by anybody I’ve ever spoken to 😂 love the videos as always
Same, it made me giggle a little. Harmless mistake.
The former name is Jenny Spring but was changed at some point to Ginnie. And it is pronounced Gin like the drink with the letter 'E" after.
Yeah it's really hard to listen to this pronunciation 😅
Always thought it was pronounced Ginny (Jinny) as it’s as clear as gin. Did parts of my cave certification there (and peacock springs and orange grove) many years ago.
Weird seeing so many photos and hearing stories about a place I visit and camp about six times a year on this channel. Like "Hey! Scary Interesting posting Ginnie Springs photos! I've been drunk there! I've swam there at 3am! I've smoked so much on that dock! I've made out by that tree! Hey that's my favorite campsite! Hey that building has the nasty bathrooms!"
I just went to ginnie for the first time in late October after Hulaween. As soon as I hopped in those waters and saw the beauty the first thing that came to my mind was getting scuba certified! Must see destination ❤
The amount of work you put in your videos is astounding. You are one of my absolute favorite youtubers because you put so much love into each video you post. Seriously, keep up the amazing work!
Caving and diving are risky enough on their own but combined its a double whammy situation
Devils Den is the coolest natural spring formation I have ever dived.
I can’t imagine caving on land, much less underwater. I’m way too claustrophobic! But hey, whatever. Makes for good videos for the rest of us to watch! And yours are very good my friend! Real voice plus real visuals. I’m so tired of watching someone play a shooter game with a narrative on top. Thanks for a real effort!
I really love this channel. Particularly when it comes to really obscure parts of the world you don't normally hear about.
Oh good an underwater maze!
Count me out 😉
I went there with my Boy Scout Troop in my youth in the early 1990's.
15:00 don’t drink and dive
I’ve been to Ginnie a couple times as a Florida native, swimming over top of the cave entrances is a truly scary and humbling experience. Looking down into the depths, you get a sense of feeling swallowed up by the darkness. Way cool. Stay spooky 💀
Thank you for all your content! Oddly enough there is something comforting listening to stories of other people dying in very unnecessary ways. I guess it makes me feel better about my life for just being alive. Good stuff
All 3 at once!? Thier poor parents 7:50
There is nearly zero tolerance for mistakes in cave diving. I did the Devils eye to Devils ear run where we had to remove our tanks to fit through a passage. This was in the early 70s before a park or any rules.
Christmas came early this year baby!
I love the old theme music!! I was so sad when you changed it lol
17:45 got his commercial certification, then promptly proves he wasn't qualified
Commercial diving is very different from cave diving. It's like someone getting their CDL and becoming a truck diver, then dying in a motorcycle accident. Very different skill sets, even if slightly related
Legend has :
Smart Jesus refused to provide a divine companion to uncertified diver,
he just waited the smart arse diver at surface of the devil cave.
5:30 because this alien-frog-hand went on a killing spree?
Devil's Ear Spring, Devil's Eye Spring and Little Devil Spring with a Grim Reaper at the entrance. Would that be a red flag? In my books YES. Thank you Sean 💠
thanks for not using AI. it cheapens the human experience.
I grew up scuba diving and go to the springs around Ginny springs all the time. I would never in a million years attempt diving those caves. I'll enjoy the water at the surface and if I want to dive in crystal clear water, I'll take a hike down to the keys.
Thank you, Thank you for not using AI Garbage generated content! Much appreciated!!
Y'all need to check out Edd Sorenson! He does the most technical dive recovery missions around the world. He's dove and recovered bodies from this cave and many more in Flordia. He dives with a rebreather system staying down for hours. His stories are insane. I've done both cave diving and spelunking, its easy to not fully understand just how much danger you might be in until its to late. I think back to things I did I knew were dangerous but I didn't understand how dangerous until I learned of other peoples fatal mistakes in the same places.
your content is so good! getting a little giggle out of the ginnie springs pronunciation
keep up the great videos!
