Your brush is a stippler and you are using it correctly. There are a few more neat things you can do to add texture.

I think someone has already told you, but the brush in question is a stencil brush.
Yes I mentioned this in a previous video and had the question answered there (I just painted these videos on the same day which is why it's mentioned again :))
That strange paintbrush is for applying paint to a stencil.
