Ievan Polkka by Hatsune Miku but it's the original Finnish lyrics by Loituma instead of gibberish

- This is my original arrangement of Ievan Polkka by Loituma using Hatsune Miku, substantially based off the Loituma version ( • Video ) and borrowing elements like the key + time signature and the intro from the already popular Hatsune Miku version by Otomania ( • Hatsune Miku "Ievan Po... ).
Ievan Polkka was a song I heard a long time ago when I was into Hatsune Miku stuff. I always thought it was just a cool thing that some Vocaloid people made.
Recently, I was in a restaurant and heard a remixed version being played and thought about it again. I read up a little and found out that it was originally a Finnish folk song and that the Miku version only uses the gibberish sounding parts of the song as its lyrics.
I thought to myself, has anyone made a Vocaloid cover of the original song with the full Finnish lyrics? Lo and behold, I couldn't find anything. As was the case with Despacito, it was up to me to make this unholy creation.
I listened to this amazing cover by Erika Ikuta of the song ( • Video ) (where there were katakana subtitles) and was convinced that it was possible to cover the Finnish lyrics even with Hatsune Miku being limited to Japanese sounds.
I also listened to this cover by Korpiklaani ( • Ievan Polkka ), which made me sure that even such a simple melody could be made more interesting than it already was with some fancy instruments and arrangements. It was also here where I realized that Finnish sounds really really cool (See some comments on that video, "This guy straight up speaking cursive"; "Finnish is the ultimate boss of all the languages, honestly, I've never seen anything that riddiculously difficult").
So I set out to make this cover. First I had to start with the base melody and backing vocals. Thankfully, someone had already transcribed it to I would say an 80% complete level for my purposes (musescore.com/user/643/scores.... Had to add a few things here and there but I basically had it. Then I added some instruments and stuff in MuseScore and I thought I was all set.
Alas, adding the lyrics to Miku in the Vocaloid editor took a really really long time because all the sounds aren't Japanese and I'm not actually fluent in the language. I constantly listened and relistened to the Loituma version that I linked above to get an estimate of the words using Japanese phonemes. I also discovered that Miku can do a lot more than just Japanese if you play around, but it's not something that Miku is built for so it takes far longer.
After a few weeks, (including procrastination), I got the Miku vocals out. I was also spurred on to continue when I saw that TheRealSullyG created an Otamatone cover ( • Ievan Polkka - Otamato... ), so I thought "Yeah this is probably trending now".
I then decided that this would be my first foray into using FL Studio instead of settling for the mediocre soundfonts that Musescore provides. Yesterday was spent creating the instrumental and I'm rather pleased with the results. I'm still way more used to Reaper when it comes to cleaning up the tracks and making the reverse reverb effect that's used twice here, but FL Studio was definitely a godsend with its presets and awesome built-in instruments.
While making the instrumental, I of course thought about the guy playing drums with the cat (Bilal Göregen) ( • Cat Vibing To Ievan Po... ). This kept popping up on my Facebook feed during this entire time. In terms of the actual music, I decided to add a little conga part in the middle to spice things up. I actually wanted to do something closer to the rhythm he was playing but to be honest, I have no idea how he does it and I just have mad respect for the guy to be able to pull off something like that with just his drums.
Then it was time to make the video. Had no idea what to add in but eventually I overcame my laziness and cropped in the Loituma guys into the back of Bilal's chair (and did some sloppy masking). Added in the leek spin Hatsune Michu too (vocaloid.fandom.com/wiki/Hach.... Also there's a random vibing cat in the middle to round out the package.
Hopefully this video's existence is justified and can distinguish itself from the other Hatsune Miku/Vocaloid cover by Otomania. Please enjoy the music!
Also check out Loituma, it seems like they're still around. Here's a video of them from 2019 performing Ievan Polkka live as great as ever: • LOITUMA: IEVAN POLKKA ...

I sent this to a Savo Finn friend as a joke and they've unironically fallen in love with this rendition. According to them this is surprisingly well done and they've praised the fact that Miku's voice library has gotten really good over the years. The arrangement is also fun and feels like a blend of old and new. I'd say if you're good enough to make a Savo Finn smile then you've done a great job.
Daww thanks! I was really trying to match the sounds of the language as much as I could with Miku, and I'm glad to hear that your friend appreciated it!
love from northern savonia!❤
This is absolute perfection! Never thought that I would finally listen to Miku sing the original finnish version of this song, and I can't describe how amazing she sounds! I just love it!
Thank you so much!! Share it around with your fellow Miku fans! It'll help out a lot :)
Otomania made one long time ago when Miku doing it
Really cool that someone finally did this.
But yeah, getting finnish out of the japanese phonemes is time consuming but very easy. Finnish has a nice thing of only 1 way to pronounce letters, and they match really well with japanese sounds, except maybe ä and ö.
Thanks! Yeah my main breakthrough with this was realizing you could add lone consonants to the ends of phrases and stuff (like a pure 's' instead of 'su'). Wasn't really something I'd done much in any of my previous vocaloid covers.
Yup. Really well done. I am stuck listening to this now. Didn't realize there was so much "finnish scat singing" in it.
The Finnish 'y' is also not found in Japanese, as far as I know.
Finnish also distinguishes geminated vs singleton and L and trilled R in a similar way to Italian, whilst Japanese only has an ungeminatable tapped R (as in "ra ri ru re ro rya ryu ryo"), yet I hear what sounds like L's. I wonder how you pulled that off!
Also, I hear what sounds a bit like "ya yo yu" in place of the "ä ö y". I believe that's as close as Japanese can get to those vowels, but maybe you didn't do that?
Japanese [a] needs to work as Finnish ‹a› and ‹ä›, [e] and [o] as ‹e›, ‹o›, and ‹ö›, and [u] as ‹y› and ‹u›
There are some sick flows here in the Finnish version.
Thanks!!
Agreed. I have absolutely no idea what it's saying (I don't speak Finnish, let alone Savo Finnish which I _just_ learned exists) but it's awesome
I love that you distinguished that it's in Savo Finnish. As a Savonian I approve
YES! The Miku version always irked me that she doesn't actually sing the Finnish. Thank you.
She didn’t? What does she sing then? I didn’t realise
It's just the scatting part looped.
@@hacim42 the scatting does even sound close to the original either
I wonder why this wasn't made sooner. And why this doesn't have many views.
Finally, she's actually singing in Finnish this time, thank u so much 😭❤️
This is a really underated version of this song. I hope it blowsup later on and we can have different versions of it.
Thank you!!
I always love hearing Miku singing the whole song, since the rest is hella catchy and underrated compared to the famous gibberish part. Nice touch on extending the Otomania remix to cover the whole thing!! I've never seen anyone do that before. Thanks for doing this cover!
20th century song intensifies 😎
Finland: Makes Folk Song
Japan: HEHE MY PROPERTY NOW!
Oh my god this is so good, never ever delete this, this is a blessing to my ears
Thank you!
I wish that we had this version of the vocaloid version of that song during the early 2000s
Wow! This sounds perfect to my Finnish ears 🇫🇮✨
Thank you!!
True, I wanna learn how to sing this in Japanese (I’m American but I’m learning Japanese in school)
I see you are a man of culture.
Me in the past: Miku sing TRUE Ievan Polkka never exists.
Now: LOOP THIS!!
Next: Miku sings TRUE Ievan polkka with Rin (scat) and Len (pol) and named Vocaloituma.
What about the 4th Person?
@@RoseQuartz692 Personally, I'd love IA.
Oh maybe IAvan Polkka could be great also.
I honestly feel like KAITO would make sense for replacing Timo Väänänen. Rin, Miku, and Luka would fill in the spots for the 3 women.
By the way, Len already sang with Finnish lyrics 13 years ago.
both this and Otomania's 2019 version, this quickly became my favorite (though the 2007 version still remains as such), although it's much better when she actually sings in Finnish rather than gibberish (does the best she could, or what the producer could).
WTH THIS ACTUALLY SOUNDS SO MUCH LIKE SAVO'S FINNISH, A BIT "MURTEEN PÄÄLLE" BUT I LOVE IT, HOW DID YOU MAKE IT SO GOOD? Much love from Lapland, Finland :D (also it would be cool to hear the vocals only)
Thank you! Not sure what murteen pääle means, but I'm guessing it's some sort of accent? 😅
Just lots of listening and mimicking with my own voice and then with the Vocaloid!
Haha maybe I'll release the vocals themselves one day
@@Wyzz222 yeah its like speaking a bit with accent xD your work is amazing :)
finnish usually sounds pretty crunchy in vocaloid but this actually slaps 🪱
You’ve done an amazing job in this! The lyrics are definitely understandable, even with the Japanese phonemes!
You actually do brilliant meme music edits.
Underrated.
Thank you! Help spread the word that I exist pls 😅
This is undoubtedly the best remix of this song holy hell
Im a bigger fan of the gibberish version but this sound awesome, good job making this
Thank you!! Yeah that version's popular for a reason 😍
Just felt that someone had to eventually make this version too heheh
@@Wyzz222 otomania had already made a version when Hatsune Miku singing Loituma's Version but on on Spotify and iTunes Music
And Hatsune Miku's Version became popular 2007 because the meme Leekspin spring 2006
@Shober Of Memes did you say that to me for I already know it
This is the best! Love miku back vocals
I WISH SHE WOULD HAVE A CONCERT HERE
Holy shit this is NOICE
Great job!
Thank you!!
I want to listen to this... nonstop... Amazing!
Thank you!!
This is so cool!! I really like how in depth the description is
Thanks! Glad you liked it! Yeah I thought it was pretty hard to summarize my thought process in a pithy title so I just wrote it all out in the description 😅
Now combine this with the actual Loituma version, and the original 1952 cover of the song, and the instrumental of the Hatsune Miku version, and when it reaches the Ratsatsaa part at 1:43, add in the original Miku vocal version, plus the Holly Dolly version and the Bilal Goregen version, and during this, have the Ratsasaa part from the Loituma and Bilal Goregen versions and this cover of the song you made repeat to sync with the OG Miku version and the Holly Dolly versions, and then after the OG Miku and Holly Dolly versions of the song end, have it go back to the melody of the 1952 and Loituma versions(plus your Loituma Style Miku version of the song)at 2:07!😄🤩😏😎👌
I'm so happy I found this.
i think i like the Finnish version a bit more 👀
Not gonna lie this is banging
thanks for this!
Finally! Been searching for this for ages! Great version! :D
Just a suggestion: If you have a formant editing application/VST, try separating あ→ä/a, え→e/ö, and う→y/u by raising and lowering the formants respectively
Thanks! I'm actually looking for a formant editing plugin. Do you know any good ones?
@@Wyzz222 FL Studio has Newtone, which is mainly a pitch correction VST, but you can raise or lower formants separately from pitch on a note-by-note basis.
@@Wyzz222 You could also automate the formant slider on most pitch correction VSTs.
I was waiting for this video, came from reddit
Thanks! Hope you liked it!!
Wonderful, thank you. It's going in the playlist, for sure.
this was super cool to watch! ty for making it!
Thank you!
Finally my life is complete. i can finally hear miku actually sing in Finnish
Good job, mate!
Thanks!!
THIS IS AWESOME!!!
"Ievan Polkka by Hatsune Miku"
**Unhappy Refrain starts playing**
OMG THIS IS SO GREAT
Thank you! I hate that so many covers are just literal gibberish.
ありがとう!
1:41 is the part we all know
i know the whole song
The Holy Grail. BLESS YOU
Finally, Finnish version
So much better
This mashup remix super close and perfectly well together!😄🤩😎👌
I believe that this could be made even better by using the japanese voice bank but then with "ä" could be used english voice bank, it's pronounced as "a" in word "had" and "ö" maybe like "ou" in journey?
Kiitos
Nice.
I want to go to finland 😀
cool
I just realized you threw in the Turkish guy's screencap of this, well done haha.
1000th like and proud
Miku sounds perfect in Finnish
😊 0:46
Yes finally 😹
Hands down🙌 to you
Thanks 👍😸
How did you produced the vowels:
/æ/,/ø/, and /y/? with japanese phonemes
I think I used e and i, tbh can't rmb atm 😅
This is perfect Finnish!
Thank you!
1:41 いつもの
This is a really interesting. I'm trying to translate this song but it's hard >.
頑張れ!!

finally found it lol
is there a vsq or vsqx for this?
Is there a download for this song?
Amazing job, I loved it but talk about a song hard to sing along eh, Finnish is kinda hard
is this on spotify :]
Unfortunately no 🫨
is that a remake?
Probably haha

Ya its much better than meaningless humming gibberish. The original Finnish songs tells a great story.
Hearing Miku sing near perfect Finnish is horrifying
MIKSEI JOKU VOI MEEÄ KORJAAN HÄEN UUN????!?!??!
Hi....Original Ievan polkka from Finland year 1952 movie ruclips.net/video/le-GB7byrQA/видео.html
This is so much better than the cringier tiktok's version
Thanks! Whats the tiktok version?

Spoiler alert: that version it's a shit, but that's the context, anyways, I wanted to share it with you. Maybe it can like you that version
I agree

Hello guy, are you still remember me?
Hello! Yeah I'm actually still subscribed to you haha. I can't remember the details but I think you were there on all my old vids 😊
suomalaiset gang 👇🏻
So the Hatsune Miku song is just gibberish the made up to sound like the original Finnish song where every word was actually words that happens to sound like total made up gibberish for those who do not speak Finnish... That is disappointing to say it mildly....
