Surprised you didn’t cover Jeanette McCurdy. Kind of a sad story, since by her account her mom was forcing her into it to diversify her career, but she put out some good songs. On a different note, I bought Julianne Hough’s album back in the day because I was obsessed with That Song In My Head, and I didn’t find out she was famous outside her music til later (I’m Australian, they didn’t screen the US version of DWTS here)
Mike Reid also wrote "Stranger in My House" by Ronnie Milsap - and won a Grammy for it. Just a few of his other big hits he has written/collaborated on include "Born to be Blue" by the Judds, "Forever's as Far as I'll Go" by Alabama, "Love Without Mercy" by Lee Roy Parnell, "Some Kind of Trouble" by Tanya Tucker, "To Be Loved By You" by Wynona and MANY other Ronnie Millsap hits. He received his BA in music in college, so he was very serious about it before he hit the NFL, and he's a Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member, so definitely a very talented individual in more than one area.
I thought Hayden Panettierre also had a decent career in country music. She was on the tv series Nashville and even scored a top 40 airplay hit called Telescope.
Lucy Hale’s album SLAPS! Everyone should give it a listen, she has a great voice paired with fun melodies. She does actually reference PLL in a couple of songs, with lyrics talking about “dirty secrets” and “lying” and “Hannah with her skinny jeans, so damn scared to eat”
Road Between is a lost gem of it's time. It's not ground breaking, but it is beautiful for what it is. It's a shame it wasn't very successful because Lucy originally started in music, and I know she's always wanted to pursue it again but felt discouraged after Road Between didn't see much success.
Chad Brock was never a big name or even a middle of the card name in Wrestling. I have been a fan for over 30 years and until this video I have never heard this guys name. I watched a lot of WCW. So I think he is using the term a lot of success Very very generously.
I'm glad you put the clarifying thing in there for Mike Reid. He was a tremendous football player, but his passion was always music when you listen to an interview with him. At his intro press conference for the Bengals, he played a classical piece on a piano they set up there. His NFL career was actually only 5 years because injuries were starting to pile up, especially for his knees and hands. He left the game to focus on music and wrote so many great songs for country artists over the years.
I had no idea that Chad Brock was a wrestler. I knew him as the She said Yes guy. As a huge Nascar fan, if you do another one of these I'd love to see something on Kyle Petty. I think he's performed the Opry a handful of times, including last year.
Chad Brock was never a big name in wrestling. I have never heard of a wrestler named that until this video. So I think Grady is being pretty generous with his description of the man’s career. I would say he has a far more successful country career than he ever had as a wrestler.
I was never a PPL fan but I actually got Lucy Hale's Road Between it's a pretty damn good country pop record I bought it after hearing You Sound Good to Me years ago lol ☺️☺️ shame she didn't go further in country
@@GradySmith oh same when I first heard her voice I was like "damn this Aria girl sure can sing lol" but yeah it's pretty good aside from YSGTM I like Lie a Little Better, From the Backseat, Nervous Girls and Red Dress with Joe Nichols from that album
Fun fact, she used to come though the drive through at my Maccas for coffee in the mornings in a G-Wagon. I had no clue who she was but it was a nice car. Then one day she came a bit later and got swarmed by fangirls andnever returned
Colbie Caillat released a country like album under a band name Gone West, the album titled “Canyons”. The background of the four groups members was pretty stacked and strong, in my opinion!
some of the celebrity musicians I like include Chrissy Metz and Trixie Mattel, the drag queen (her album One Stone surprised me - there's so much instrumentation! it's great folk music!) I also like Christian Kane's album. definitely agree with you. A lot of the indie country / folk / bluegrass / etc. scene is very hesitant to accept interlopers, and I think that's justified. Many celebrities think it's cute to play up the cowboy aesthetic but don't really care about making good music. It can be pretty annoying because it overshadows the really hardworking people of the indie country scene, and it treats country music like a gimmick :/ I really love country because it *can* be silly and funny, but it also has a somber side and many other facets. It's not a joke, you know? And it shouldn't be treated as an easy way to get rich or go viral.
Yeah, but for him to say that he had a lot of success in wrestling is being incredibly generous. I have never heard of a wrestler named Chad Brock until this video. He was definitely not a success. I would say his country music career far surpasses his wrestling career.
Listen, as the world's #1 fan of the Scott Brothers, I understand. I just felt like I should cover some new territory. But deep down, I know you're right, and I am grievously sorry. I will step down as the chairman of the "My House" Fan Club, and I will never deprive the world of their beautiful, moving music ever again. Every vid is a Property Bros vid from here on out. It's what they deserve. It's what you deserve. The world will know the gorgeousness of "Hold On" and "You Chose Me." YOU HAVE MY WORD!
I think I forgot till this video, but I definitely saw Julianne Hough perform in concert! She was opening for Blake Shelton and George Strait in 2009ish, but I'd only heard That Song in My Head at the time. I don't even think I listened to her album, but that was a top played song for me throughout all of college LOL
There's also Beverley Mitchell! She's an actress, most notable for her role on 7th Heaven. She put out a country album in the early 2000s, and I personally think the songs are really good!
I would put Grey Delisle on this list, she a well know Voice Actress, who had voice 100 characters among them being her iconic role as Princess Azula in Avatar: The Last Airbender She also has had a long time Country music career and it's really good
VIDEO IDEAS: 1) Your favorite songs from different songwriters (for example Hillary Lindsey). 2) Artists that sadly never got a breakthrough (I always believed that Sarah Darling would make it). 3) Take a closer look at the lifespans and/or peaks of country artists/female artists/duos/groups. How long do they usually last?
Julianne Hough was my first concert at the fair grounds lol. She did fantastic. Her song Jimmy Rae McGee had me in a vice grip for a long time. I love that song.
Another person you could have maybe included is Matt Duchene of the Nashville Predators. There was a clip of him at a place called Gibson garage performing whiskey glasses, he also played guitar on stage with Lee Brice during the NHL All-Star Game festivities in Nashville back in 2016
yes! is one of my all-time favorite songs. I don't know why but it just makes me smile when I hear it and I can't help but sing along. I didn't know he was famous for something else.
I took my kids to Lucy Hale a free “pop up” concert at our local mall advertised like a day or so before the event. I think she would have had some top 10 albums with a different label and promotion team. She should have been opening for someone like Carrie Underwood or Lady A.
Sissy Spaceck!! Love her version of “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You” and not to mention her doing all of her singing alongside Beverly D’Angelo in Coal Miner’s Daughter.
On the wrestling front: Jeff Jarrett portrayed a country musician as his character in the 90s and even sung his own theme song called "Alone With My Baby Tonight" which is low-key a bit of a bop. There's also the current Impact champion Mickie James, who is nicknamed "Hardcore Country" and has released country music of her own.
I always think about when I saw Keith Urban get mad at an American Idol contestant who said she wanted to "do the country thing". I don't mind when people try something new, but I get very irritated when they act like that thing is easier than what they do. That does for athletes or actors who decide to become musicians. It also goes for musicians who think genre jumping will just fix their career.
The excitement I felt when I saw the notification for a new Grady video, thinking it was the Ernest video finally and then my heart was broken when it wasn’t. I love your work, but I think I have to accept that we will never get an Ernest video now.
I think its hard to get respect in Bluegrass because the genre works very hard to keep out anyone who isnt there strictly for the music. If you play as a way to get famous, they will sniff you out quick. Its about the love of the art form. On another note, I feel like an artist that needs a gray area mention here is Kris Kristofferson. He definately holds an esteemed place in country music, but for all of that he is way more famous to most people as an actor.
There was also Christian Kane from Angle, leverage and the libertarians. I really like his album House Rules still listen to it a bit even now. I actually got to see him live in Camden in London a few years back.
There’s an episode of Leverage where he poses as an aspiring country musician for a heist and the whole reason it WORKS both in-universe and out is because he has the talent to back it up
I think you should take a look at Kiefer Southerland. He blew up on 24 and has made 3 full length albums going the traditional country and country-rock routes. Not Enough Whiskey and Agave are permanently on my playlists.
Kiefer Sutherland also has a few country records out in his name as well and he’s not bad at all. Most people will probably know him from 24 as Jack Bauer.
Also, regarding Billy Bob, I wouldn't be surprised if his musical pivot was at least slightly influenced by his Sling Blade co-star (and friend) Dwight Yoakam. Yes, that Dwight Yoakam.
When you promised a wrestler in here, I thought for sure it was going to be Mickie James, another Richmond native. She put out a few things over the last 10 years that are a bit poppy style wise but she overhauled her wrestling image to be more country since that time as well. She’s still pretty active in wrestling moreso than music right now it seems.
Yeah, I was thinking he was going to cover either her or Brian James. Although I feel like covering him, would’ve been a little unfair, because even though he did do a song, it was not him seriously attempting to do a country career. It was more part of a soil line. But I have never heard of Chad Brock in wrestling until this video. That guy was definitely never a big success in the sport.
I may be misremembering but I think Steve Martin (co)wrote a bluegrass broadway musical called Bright Star. Edit: yes, he wrote the book and co-wrote the music with Edie Brickell. It even got some Tony noms and won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music

I’m gonna add honorable mentions to former rodeo pro Jason Meadows. And all pro football tackle Kyle Turley
I love Kyle Turley’s music! Met him a couple times. Very nice guy!
Laura Bell Bundy is definitely an interesting case study in this phenomenon I think.
I loved Mike Reid’s music. He clearly doesn’t need to do it for the money anymore!
another one you didn't mention is actor Billy Bob Thornton who started the band "The Boxmasters". who had a pretty good song called "the poor house"
Don’t forget Gwyneth Paltrow’s unfortunate dip into the country music world.
Just an FYI Chad Brock is supposed to be making a comeback in music and has a show on the over the air channel the country network
Jeff Bridges and Steve Martin are actually pretty damn good!
I really like Jeff Bridges voice and songs.
My aunt met Steve Martin once (she works at a theater). She said that he is a super nice guy.
I think Jana Kramer would have been a good addition to this list!

Christian Kane is worth a mention. House Rules is still a banger to listen to.
Totally overlooked John Schneider... and Tom Wopat I guess.
