A24 has some hits, but if you're someone who claims they have 0 bad movies than you need to rewatch their catalogue
this. this is something that needs to be more amplified.
More hits than misses IMO
What’s good Steve, I see you’ve been partaking in the delights of LSD too.
And youre point being?
@@kylereno5383 I think they made the comment without watching the video expecting them to trash it
This movie is soooooo underrated. I saw it on Showtime and I couldn’t get enough of it. And I love the final message of it. His obsession with finding a grand conspiracy within pop culture and Hollywood pays off but it’s not like he can do anything about it.
There is something we can do about it.. the thing is we don’t wanna do anything about it.
"Cool, the dog finally caught the car it was chasing. Now what's it gonna do with it?"
I had that revelation 5 years ago back when I was super into that type of shit
@@betheguy_posts dogs chase cars?
@@DragonsFrogs yeah some do, i got chased by a dog when i was on a bike, so anything fast they'll go barking and running
Under the Silver Lake was a misunderstood masterpiece. People took seriously the ironic approach yet did not take seriously the vision. I love this film!
Haven’t watched the movie yet but when you said “There’s no catharsis in uncovering a grand scheme if you’re powerless to stop it. The only peace you can find is when you stop letting it have power over you.” Shook.
I rarely comment on yt videos but I loved this. edit: typo
I had a brief period many years ago with conspiracy theories. I came to the same conclusion.
@@chappydowhop Same. I go back in forth with my consumption of conspiracy theories. While I believe a great deal of them I dont worry myself with the weight of them anymore. It is what it is.
@@MuzikAddict2 I'll be your conspiracy, baby.

When I saw this film it instantly jumped to the top as one of my favorite A24 movies along with Saint Maud which I recently saw. You should definitely give that one a go if you haven't!
Haven't peeped Saint Maud yet, definitely going to have to check it out soon!
@@meeptop feel like i should warn you, it's extremely graphic. maybe not as bad as A24's other movies, but it presents gore and self harm in an extremely realistic and horrifying way.
I liked the actress in saint maud UNTIL she became insufferable the hilariously bad rings of power show. She was terrible in that series. So i don’t know if she’s actually a good actress now
Oh I really hated under the silver lake
Saint Maud fuckin sucks he’s lying to you
I loved under the silver lake. And to me it falls right in line with what I’ve come to expect with A24 films. Sams character is hilarious and his acting in some scenes was mesmerizing. This film feels like a fever dream that you can just keep coming back to and finding new things you didn’t notice before. LOVE this movie. And the songs are hella catchy too.
I swear I remember reading in an article or on Twitter during its first showing and before it was shelved that a few big producers didn't like the way it made Hollywood look so I'm 99% that's the reason A24 hids it away.
Ironically this movie makes me wanna visit Hollywood.
La La land almost won Best Picture , that doesn’t shine on Hollywood either .
The Weinstein argument is great
Really appreciate your suggestion to watch this very strange and wonderful film. I was definitley in the mood for this today. Going to watch the rest of your video now. THANK YOU!
I did the same thing but not as a joke
I've seen this movie at the end of 2019 for the first time and after the credits started rolling it has instantly became my favourite movie ever. I haven't stopped thinking about it since. I find everything about this movie perfect, the more watch the movie, the more I watch video essays about it, the more I dig it. I hope this movie somehow becomes a classic like Donnie Darko.
Jeeze I hated this movie. Too much stuff going on lol
I'm with you. Idk if I'd put it at number one favorite movie for me (not that I've thought about it one way or another) but it's top 10 for sure.
@@daemontano3523 that's one of the things that made me love the movie
@@G59METH I love a lot about the movie but it's presentation, unraveling, has so many issues. They could have put the same messages across in a much more cohesive digestible way. I think too many ideas were too disparate to wrap together well in the time they had.
I totally agree I really love this movie and Donnie Darko they are my 2 favorite movies
This movie blew my mind completely, it’s all about subtext behind a plot that everyone has been intrigued about at least once “ hidden codes , subliminal messages , the big lie “ . Maybe his friend wasn’t even real as it seems he always answer things sam wants to hear , maybe Sam is a thief because at some point we are told a lot of musical instrument and equipment have been robbed lately and Sam’s apartment is full of these stuffs , how a guy who can’t even pay his rent posses such expensive things ? it seems it is quite easy for him to break into someone ‘s house just like he did in Sarah ‘s apartment , Sarah indeed disappeared but never disappeared from Sam’s life as he barely knew her assuming they indeed met each other who knows it could all be in Sam ‘s head . He hates homeless because he’s about to become one, no job , no house and probably soon no money . Jesus this movie is huge .
Greetings from Mexico man , awesome video .
also, i think he was the dog killer
Paused this video just to go watch the movie and come back here. This movie captivated me in a way that I could not tear myself away from. Every single scene has so many messages and comments on media, society, consumption, sexuality, obsession and more. Thank you so much for shedding light on such a grossly under appreciated movie.
I would agree with your point that if you're expecting an A-B plot with a resolution, this is not the movie for you. It will leave you with more questions than answers and that, to me at least, is the whole point. I agree with your personal theory that this is a way for the director to comment on Hollywood and certain individuals or trends within it. I also can see how this movie would not get promoted in any kind of big way in Hollywood, and as such has been flying quietly under the radar. A24 films are quickly becoming my favorite films to watch.
Thank you again!
I think the movie is also so underrated in part because it may hit a little too close to home as far as Hollywood and the rich are concerned--especially when you consider there actually *is* a market for bunkers for rich people.
Spot on analysis of the movie!
Six months and they transcend, timing sounds about right. Those willing to go down in the hole with them naively seal their fate.
I had to pause it after the Songwriter scene because it was so intense, the pacing was insane, the soundtrack gave me NO BREAK, the acting performances were incredible...I just love this movie so muuuch
Someone should start a petition to get this movie a PROPER blu-ray release.
If we're lucky, Criterion will eventually pick this up and give it the Blu-Ray release it deserves.
@@meeptop criterion? Lol. Don’t those movies have to be like 50 years old and certified classics? You are hyping this movie up far more than it should be. I hated it.
@@QuadiePoo there's a criterion blu ray of armaggedon by michael bay lol
@@QuadiePoo No, there are surprisingly a ton of recent Criterion releases from within the last few years, many of them being Netflix movies. It’s less about being a “certified classic” and more about being worthy of preservation or restoration. Despite it being polarizing, it would definitely benefit from a company like Criterion picking it up so it could have a slightly larger physical footprint.
@@meeptop I have a film you might enjoy as a title that Disney would not want you to see. The first and last R rated movie they would release, featuring Tuco from Better Caul Saul: “Blood In, Blood Out”
It is a beautiful film.
I thought this movie was a perfect example of how you properly do Pynchon in film form. It is even more impressive that it is not written by, nor directly references any specific work by Pynchon. That said, it gives serious "Crying of Lot 49," "Inherent Vice," and "Vineland" vibes.
This is so true
nailed it
Sam reminds me of Tyrone Slothrop a lot as well. A bumbling fool who stumbles into a conspiracy, recognizes it, follows the cookie crumbs far as they will take him, but cannot do anything about it.
Is it just me or is Pynchon becoming increasingly popular? He seems to have caught on with millennials. He was very niche a decade ago.
@@jeremyhopkins577, I am sure it has something to do with the PTA adaptation of Inherent Vice. Prior to this, there weren't any film adaptations of his novels that I am aware of.

yes, same. This movie felt so insane at some points, I couldn't believe it actually exists
Under the Silver Lake makes a great double bill with Sorry to Bother You, another of my all time favorites.
Saw Sorry to Bother You when it came out in theaters and I also loved it! I had a whole script written out about it at one point, but it's been put on the back burner indefinitely.
For my money, the perfect triple feature is:
Eyes Wide Shut
Under the Silver Lake
Sorry to Bother You
My favourite and second favourite movie 😭
Love this movie. I think in 20 years people will look back and say this was a masterpiece. That scene with the artist destroying all of our favorite songs and basically saying that shadowy figures own our memories was fucking brilliant. Do I wish there was a bit more of a twist in the end? Sure. But it's still legendary.
I completely agree that was my favorite scene it was so ominous
You are the living definition of a cock sucker. Your taste and media literacy is so poor you will literally call any decently shot bullshit a “masterpiece”. Seriously fuck you
Well in 10-20(+some change) years most of the themes, messages, conspiracy theories, et al.....of the film(& MANY more like it) will be more illuminated, educated, uncovered, & so forth. So i'm sure it'll eventually become a cult classic.
@@snowfrosty1 yes definitely agree 👍
i liked the ambigous endung with the unasnwered owl women
A point that appears throughout the film and that made a lot of sense to me after watching it a couple of times was Sam's obsession with the homeless, he hated them so much on the outside, but on the inside he respected them and even feared them; everything so that in the end he became one of them.
Thank you for this content, this movie during pandemic became one of my favourites of all time, it means so much and gives a lot to think.
Cheers!
Under the silver lake is a gem. The spritual pynchon adaptation we didn't know we needed, especially in our current zeitgeist. thanks for making this vid and bringing attention to it!
I watched this movie because of you. Really interesting movie , a weird mix between " inherent vice" from Anderson , "Mullholand drive " & " Eyes wide shut " I love how the movie tells a lot of its story visually without saying anything
The pool scene with the blonde girl Sam is looking for is a direct copy from a Marylin Monroe scene in the pool. The cultural influence exercised on the young generation like Sam , chasing their " blonde Marylin Monroe " , chasing the Hollywood California dream in a vain attempt , was really the Crux of that story . Sam is like all of us. A random young dude living a mediocre life , filled with failure and failed dreams , sitting beside a pool on a balcony , pretending to work . Maybe he needed that conspiracy , that thrill in his life ? Maybe it was all in his head seeing how much weed he consumes. Who knows ? The truth in the end is a lot more simple and disappointing. Because under the silver lake no one knows or sees. Drowning under the Hollywoodian pop culture influence .
Interesting that you talk about Inherent Vice....because I am a Pynchon fan, and after having read his novel "The crying of Lot 49" a few years ago. I saw this movie and thought it was hugely inspired by that novel. So much that some scenes in the movie are directly ripped off from the novel.
Well said, I agree. And I'd say there's also a dash of The Big Lebowski
where did you watch it?
@@mr.nobody9955 amazon prime video
Immediately got vibes of Mullholand Drive and thought this may even have been a somewhat connected sequel. After watching again, really did feel like an Inherent Vice directed script. I loved it.
Very surprised to hear that the movie was "swept under the rug" in the US, since I was it in theaters in my french town when it came out. My enjoyable teenage brain enjoyed it greatly, I'd love to give it a rewatch one of those days.
this movie is currently playing on netflix in australia. there is plenty of things i don't like about streaming but credit where credit is due, it does allow overlooked movies to reach new eyes.
this movie is solid and continues to grow on me. the unresolved plot threads are part of its appeal.
This movie used to be free on amazon prime. I really liked this movie. I lived near Silverlake so I was instantly drawn to this movie when I first saw it years ago.
I love this movie. And luckily it got released here in Japan. Japan has a special love for A24 movies, not that many western movies get releases in theaters here.
Your comment interested and enlightened me, this movie had a very Murakami feel
Love this video so much! Under the Silver Lake literally became one of my top fave films of all time after my first viewing. It's just so hypnotic and draws you in plus Andrew Garfield is always phenomenal
Under the Silver Lake is totally underrated, it's not a great great movie, but it's unique enough and familiar enough to stand apart from others. You're right, it's best viewed when knowing little to nothing about the plot. Great stoner movie.
I love how ppl either love it or hate it, personally, it's one of my favorite movies of all time.
I definitely think it's an 8/10. It's a nice double feature with Mullholland Drive. With the seedy LA vibes/surreal aspects.
I changed my mind, I watched it again and now think it’s a masterpiece, well…at least in the indie film world
End of the day - Very boring movie , went nowhere. A couple funny moments. The acting was good, I held out & hoped but 🤦🏼♀️. If you liked it , that’s good 😂 11:46
I have never seen this film, but your video was incredibly well-done and engaging. Definitely will be checking out everything else you've done.
Plus I loved the use of the L.A. Noire theme towards the end.
I first watched it over lockdown (i think) and absolutely loved it but was kind of scared that no one around me would understand the love and beauty behind it. And then I showed my partner who suffered through the first 20 minutes and then was hooked. Andrew Garfield has never been better and this film left a mark on me.
I just stumbled onto this last night, and immediately was hooked. The score, the beautiful settings, the characters. I loved it immediately.
This movie is an epic journey into the deep, dark (but vaguely suspected) unknown grand conspiracy. I got similar vibes with "Eyes Wide Shut", "The Matrix" and "They Live".
Thank you for this recommendation. I am still bewildered, dazed by the seemingly meaningless tones throughout yet the end note encourages letting go and accept. Yeah, the soundtrack, the scenes, the acting are brilliant. The movie is truly symbolic indeed; kinda like we were living in Sam's mind throughout. That's why I feel it seems like a hero's quest in reverse. I have to watch UTSL again. But thank you, thank you, thank you. For the recommendation, your explanation and upon reading the comments to learn about Sorry To Bother You.
I always come back to the scene of the musician who wrote all the hits that have defined our lives...that hollowness resonates, especially as someone who was trying to write music as a teen and feel uninspired by a lack of substance to what it all really meant to me and others. the pondering about what pop culture is and how it is embraced really gets me in the gut...so glad Robert David Mitchell had the guttural instinct to crystallize this
Coincidentaly i watched this just last night, and found your video today, perfect timing. This was on my list since a few months, and it hits the spot like most of A24 productions. Agree a lot with your analisys, and Garfield's performance is nothing less than brillant. One of those movies that future aditional viewings can get better and more pleasurable in time. cheers
This video came up in our YT recommendations, and I finally pulled it out of Watch Later to put on while doing some cleaning today. Your opening was compelling enough that I actually did stop the video, find the movie, and watched it while continuing to clean, eventually just stopping to watch it because it was so interesting. I'm now back to this video to finish it, now that I freshly know what you'll be talking about, but all of that is to say, thank you for making this! Got me to watch a damn cool movie I wouldn't have otherwise seen, and I'm looking forward to finishing this up to see what you have to say about it.
haha ironically i just got this in my recommendations even though it's a year old
Not sure how your channel isn’t larger but I’m sure it is about to blow up. I watched this movie because of your video and I have to say I really resonates with me especially with how disconnected I feel in society right now. The feeling that there is just something not quite right, existential angst and an underlying problem with so many things. Excellent review and analysis, I just need to work on finding that peace Sam did at the end.
probably because of his eyebrows and low IQ takes such as "this movie was suppressed because it is too weird and unmarketable, unlike Midsommar or The Lighthouse".
The scene where he meets the Songwriter will forever stick with me. Under the Silver Lake is massively underrated.
I swear
best scene in the movie
Dude, this interpretation is not even the one I believe and it's still very coherent to the movie's themes and story. I think that's what makes Under The Silver Lake so amazing. You can go to many directions and arrive in many conclusions that are valid to it's content
I love this movie so much. On top of that it's message of just trying to make what you can out of life, no matter how confounding or unfair it seems, is a really great one.
There have been films like this. Ryan Johnsons „Brick“ is one of them. In Germany Under the silver lake was marketed like every other indie movie so I came to see it not long after release. My wife and I liked it a lot and it somehow stayed with me quite a while
Loved "Under the Silver Lake". I love a very wide variety of films and have favs in almost every genre and sub genre. Horror and it's many sub generes is and are definitely my film forte. I have enjoyed most of the art house/"elevated" horror films A24 has produced or distributed. I look forward to future releases from A24. Again, great hidden gem of a film. I definitely agree with your assessment. 🤘
Thank you so much for making this video. Somehow, it triggered the algorithm to make itself pop up in my suggestions and I’m so glad I did. I loved the movie. I can see how it’s not for everyone but wow is it underrated! Beautifully shot, expertly scored, lead gives the performance of his career to date, etc etc. This may have been missed entirely had you not made your video about it.
I came across your video yesterday, stopped at the spoiler alert and just finished watching this film, followed by the remainder of your video. I was aware of it but had not watched it as my impression was that it is a movie that was more hip than worthwhile. As someone who grew up and has lived nearly my whole life near the title neighborhood and many of the locations in this movie, I think I was avoiding. Anyway, I'm glad I took your suggestion and watched it, I found it engaging and mysterious, and it left me feeling like I had missed some clues and hints along the way, which is a quality I love in a film. Thanks for the recommendation!
It's a movie that I found too ambitious to enjoy, but even though I wasn't a fan, I recommend to some friends that might appreciate it
I saw this movie randomly in theaters (it released in theaters in mexico idk) because I like Andrew Garfield and I got one of the weirdest most memorable movies I've seen. Since then I've been doing that and gotten to see some other gems.
I remember putting this on my must watch list after stumbling on the trailer before its release, and I waited for it to hit theaters and got confused when it didn’t. Then I just forgot about it. I’m glad to hear it’s worth seeing!
Currently any movie that is unique or not based on superheroes is a breath of fresh air. Give me good dialog/plot over action/effects.
Thank you for introducing me to this movie. There are not many films like this that manage to create a feeling like reading a novel, coherent meaning is not important. It’s not for everybody, it reminded me of another film that was generally disliked that I feel strived for the same feelings, Southland Tales. There is magic here
Watch Inherent Vice and Burning.
@@Garrett1240 oh wow burning is a Murakami story one of my favourite authors thank you so much for the suggestions 😊
Apart from getting really weird storywise towards the end, I loved the style and feel of the movie from the get-go. Especially if you like stylised, noir movies and Andrew Garfield, give it a watch. I think you instantly know from the first scene on if this is for you ^^
It came out when I was living in Prague, I used to spend a lot of evenings alone just walking the streets and doing impulsive things like going to the cinema by myself whenever I decided to go. No planning, or waiting for someone or compromising on the movie. And so one day I was walking through the streets of Prague and I decided to go see a movie and for some reason I chose this one. And I have to say I had one of the best cinema experiences seeing this movie and knowing nothing about it. I felt so comfortable just sitting there watching this on big screen. And could really relate to the main character who too walks the city alone and discovers different things. It is my favorite film from that year and to this day I don’t understand why it’s so underrated. I absolutely love it and I always recommend it to people. It’s beautifuly shot and has great mood to it. You can just sink into the movie and have a great time.
It was actually shown in theaters in my country. Of course, no one really went to see it, but I went with 3 more of my friends and it was just us in the theater (and some guy who left after 30 minutes or so). It blew my mind and not only that, it was one of the best cinema experiences I've ever had. Two of my friends hated but the third one loved it, and so did I. It was also so fun because bizarre shit just kept going and you never knew where it was going to take you next. Pair that with the grossed out shocked reactions of the two friends who hated it and overall it was a really fun time.
Under the Silver Lake is awesome. I got the blu ray and I completely LOVE it. It's hilarious to me that this film is the one A24 struggled to market.
absolutely wild that they had a hard time marketing something Andrew Garfield is in when he's been a movie fan sweetheart ever since The Social Network. All they had to do was organize a Q&A on letterboxd + tumblr and BAM! return on investment !
I watched Under The Silver Lake over 2 years ago due to Red Letter Media recommending it on Half In The Bag. Not only did i fall in love with the movie, that’s when I officially fell in love with RLM because they gave me what is now one of my favorite films of all time.
Your music choice for this video is amazing
Great video bro, and I've always liked this weird little movie. Going to LA more often recently always reminds me of this flick, and makes me want to film something there, all in the vein of Under the Silver Lake, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, etc.

I love this movie. Instantly became one of my all time favorites. Catapulted me into the deeper realms of the A24 wormhole.
This film reminds me a lot of Thomas Pynchon’s work, revolving around paranoia, also the film inherent vice which is based off of a Pynchon novel
Super underrated movie, can’t believe my mom was the one who showed it to me in 2019. I still think about the movie, was such a memorable film. Soundtrack was sooo good too.
I’ve actually been meaning to watch this movie because I love conspiracies lol but I’ve been putting it off. Your video popped up in my recommended videos and I got excited. Typically I don’t care about spoilers and will listen to them before watching the movie but for once I actually took your advice to watch the movie knowing nothing going in & stopped your video when you said to! Nathaniel West explored similar themes to 'Under The Silver Lake' in his novel 'Day of the Locust' and I can't help but feel the director of 'Silver Lake' has either read West's novel or has seen the film adaptation of it. West's novel didn't deal with conspiracies, of course, but like 'Silver Lake', it does examine the tawdry, artificial nature of the Hollywood film industry. It would probably be an interesting exercise to conduct a critical comparison of the two.
Your analysis of the conclusion is beautiful man. Watched this in August of 2019 and it had a big effect on me, then had a stress/marijuana induced psychotic break in December in which I came to the conclusion we were all living in hell... Then 2020 happened. Needless to say, it was a struggle. But what you mentioned about no one having more answers than anyone else, was one conclusion I came to that really helped me back to some kind of normalcy. Never drew a direct line between this film and that conclusion, but I think it had something to do with it for sure. Really glad I stumbled on your channel. Looking forward to what you do next.
I'm genuinely sorry to hear you went through such hell, but overwhelmingly glad that you found some semblance of catharsis/closure at the end of that journey down the rabbit hole. I can relate to what you've shared in more ways than I could ever really hope to put into a singular comment. I truly don't believe, especially after 2020, that we'll ever have a full semblance of what's really happening around us. At times that thought is daunting, but lately it feels rather liberating. Incredibly thankful for you sharing your story, as well as the kind words. Stay strong, appreciate you!
@@meeptop Thank you for the reply. Appreciate you
Know that you aren't alone, even in a sea full of strangers. As I was reading your comment with the movie fresh on the brain, you wrote "Never drew a direct line between this film and that conclusion." As I read that, I instantly thought of the cereal box map scene and had my mind blown. This movie is a trip.
“There’s no catharsis to be found in uncovering a grand conspiracy if there’s nothing you can do to stop it.” The part about learning to not allow the knowledge to hold too much power over your life is a profound insight.
I’d say there’s a tie in to the story’s conspiracy being about spiritual ascension and the Kurt Cobain synchronicity with the songwriter’s death: maybe once we figure out the song’s lyrics (or arrangements/codes), we finally achieve Nirvana upon death. Individual people grasp different angles of the song’s meaning(s), and some grasp that through knowledge of the songwriter(s) more than the song itself.
A great many people take the backdoor route to the songwriter, via conspiracy researching: all rabbit holes lead out into the Light if you follow them far enough, but people rarely travel them that far. Arguably, we can travel them only far alone; we have to meet the songwriter(s) halfway on that bridge, bc it gets too dark & complex for the human psyche to comprehend all on its own.
How much are u willing to question ur very foundations of reality, how far are u willing to go and what will be ur breaking point, the point where u pump the breaks and stop?
There's a clear and defined ending, although, like u said, most give up sometime before that point because, to their mind, such MASSIVE truths/lies could not be hidden from the masses.....and without even checking it out to see if it's a lie or truth they abandon it altogether.
Sadly, or rightly so, depending or ur awareness levels, everything is exactly how it needs to be, warts and all.

@@paulcurran4786 I’d also argue the point of uncovering the grand conspiracies is to understand how they reflect ourselves & what purposes they serve us & others.
And in what they tell us about the shadows on the cave wall; it’s not about ending them, necessarily. They end when they’ve served their purposes.
In the interim, we can try to find the beauty (& function) in the thorns. 🌹

Had to say thank you. Watching Under the Silver Lake bc of your video. I had not heard of it at all. Hands down one of the most visually arresting & interesting films I've seen in years. You're a gentleman & a scholar. My deepest gratitude 🙏
This is one of my favorite films ever and have been trying to find more like it, but have yet to find anything close. UTSL has largely inspired a lot of my writing in my script
you should check out inherent vice if you haven't seen it
I haven’t seen it yet but my impression is that it’s very Pynchon-esque, In case you’ve read crying of lot 49 or Inherent vice it has that similar style. A slacker noir like the big lebowski. Also that show lodge 49 which they shouldn’t have cancelled
I was definitely reminded of The Crying of Lot 49, a great postmodern book
UTSL is great! I know there's been much discussion of the "hidden" codes in the film, but after my second watch I'm beginning to wonder if those are just red herrings and the real secret is to be discerned in the internal logic of its cinematic vernacular.... 🤔
It's crazy how powerful marketing is (which ironically is a huge theme of the movie), I was really interested in seeing this when I saw one of the first trailers, and then I just completely forgot it ever existed until this video popped up in my recommended and I was prompted to go download it.
Love your content man, you deserve recognition
Thank you for this gem! I watched the movie based on your recommendation, and came back to finish your video after. OMG. This was the most A24 movie I have ever seen. It just kept getting better and better.
My best pitch on it is "Imagine if Quentin Tarantino directed an acid trip starring SpiderMan"
It wasn't just the comic book scene, but Andrew wore red tops with blue pants throughout most of the movie (the red plaid shirt was the closest thing to the SpiderMan costume). You could totally watch this as Amazing SpiderMan 3, if he was on a mental break down spiral after losing Gwen
Did you notice, in the scene where he wakes up after fighting those kids, his hand is stuck to a Spiderman comic book, just like how it happens to Peter Parker?
I did notice there were a lot spiderman references. Didn't expect a cheap and easy gag like that from the film, but after watching it ties in with the overall message.
@@mking3232 it was actually in the script before they cast Andrew. He brought it up to the director and the director thought about changing it and Andrew said no he loves it.
Oh wow! That's an interesting bit of behind the scenes trivia!
Love your conclusion! The twisted catharsis of David Robert Mitchell.
It was released in 2018 in Hungary (where I live), screened in cinemas. I guess they collected some money from small countries, the film wasn't delayed in this region. I was 15 at that time and I loved. I had this comforting fear when the owl character came.
I LOVE Under the Silver Lake. I can't fully explain why - but I am as obsessed with this film as the protagonist was with the conspiracy.
I truly hope this movie finds an audience. It's phenomenal.
Don’t worry it does this is my favorite movie ever. I’ve watched it 3 times back to back. 12 times in total. Watched dozens of videos about people talking about this movie. Listened to the movies musical score, which is made by disasterpeace, for months. And I’m working on comics heavily influenced by the comic style that are shown in this film. With the dark black background and the formatting of text as a box on the side rather than speech bubble. A comic about elitism and occultism. This movie just felt so fun and comfortable to watch for me idk why I connected so well with it, but it’s influenced me a lot. I do screenwriting and really wanna transfer my previous stories into comic formatting because of this movie and the impact those comics had to the film. Andrew was perfect for this film.
Love this film. Sits on the shelf between Lost Highway & Wild Things. The movie stands as a Theoretical Love Letter to a Hypothetical Love Letter from Brian DePalma to himself.
hey there, are you familiar with Lupe Fiasco's "Precious Things" music video (quite recent, some 2 months old)?
---> not a 100% sure, but I feel there could be some meaningful connection[s] between UTSL & such an unusual / experimental clip; if not on the topic level, for sure in the way both audiovisual rollercoasters are filled with intertwingled easter eggs, half-conceived secondary paths, tiny little crazy details, single-frames worth a pause-and-zoom analysis..!
The movie was pretty long and even half way through I was wondering how all these elements would tie together. I had similar thoughts of dogs relating to women and the main character’s deep routed misogyny which I feel was truly exposed by him trying to reason with his neighbor’s choices in service of himself. This movie was lengthy and I still want to know who the owl woman was and her part in the matter?
Is he misogynistic because he's Male? Or into trying to learn?
You need way more subscribers you put lots of work in it
Extremely thankful for all the support I get but, at the end of the day, I really do this just cause I love doing it. So whether I end up with a million subs or stay where I'm at now, I'm just stoked about making videos and happy that anybody is resonating with them at all!
I saw this when it showed at Festival de Cannes in 2018. It was shot in my neighbourhood so it was a little bit of home nostalgia.
I didn’t fully understand the message until watching this video, but just the setting, soundtrack and cinematography alone has kept me coming back to this movie. I love it so much
Red letter media got me to watch a few years ago I really liked it, I didn’t know that it was being hidden dang, people should give it a chance
I like the way they approach modern horror movies, for horror fans, it's awesome because they take it seriously
This movie was ahead of its time
I have owned under the silver lake since it came to dvd, just came across this video with absolute eupora, you have a new subscriber, wonderful analysis
Started this video earlier, stopped bought the movie, watched the movie and now I'm back
This movie is brilliant. Great to see another fan sharin the live for this one
1:40. Wow. I collect FYC discs because the packaging tends to be far nicer than standard releases but wow, that's impressive!
Dropping the like on your vid at the halfway point just in case i forget to come back to this video later, but I definitely am going to go watch this movie now.
Wow, what a punchline! Great review. I'd love to hear your take on "Under the Skin." I don't know if it's an A24 film, but there's a lot to unpack there, I think. I was baffled.
Under the Skin is an A24 film, and it's one I haven't watched since it released. I remember loving Scarlett Johansson's performance and a lot of the sci-fi visuals, but not much beyond that. In the years since, I've listened to tons of discussions about the film and have been itching to revisit it. However, at this point, I feel that there's already so many good discussions and analyses of the film here on RUclips I don't think I'd contribute much to the conversation. I'll rewatch it eventually and if I feel like I have a fresh take I'll definitely throw it out there. Otherwise, I'd encourage you to look at some other creators out there!
@@meeptop yes the parts of the film were shes picking up men. I heard they actually really did that with hidden cameras. Not all the men, but some of them. To make it more realistic. Do u know if that's true??
Hopefully, over the coming years this film will be seen as a worthy heir to films like Mulholland Dr. and Donnie Darko.
I watched the movie because of this video, never even heard about it before. Paused your video on the spoiler warning and saw the movie after work today. Glad RUclips recommended your video, I really enjoyed the movie in ways I can't quite describe yet. It really is one of those movies that will keep me thinking about it for a long time, I feel like.
You sold me on it, going to watch now. Great video.
I saw UTSL a few years ago and thought it was pretty good. The beautiful blonde girl in the swimming pool scene was what sold it to me initially. I realise nowadays that my taste in films isn't mainstream. I really loved Triangle of Sadness (this year)... and yet that film also has a lot of hate surrounding it.
A24 have a knack of picking out interesting movies/screenplays/directors. The film industry is better with them in it than not. Long may they continue... for all the weirdos out there.
This movie will be looked back on as being one of the greatest films of all time. A modern Kubrickesque mindfuck. If anything the real mystery is how this director farted out "It Follows" and was able to follow up with this masterpiece.
I think the director and the movie are mirror images, he just said eff it i’m going to make a movie i would want to watch and closed out all the hollywood bs from his head, i live in LA and hollywood is full of losers, and i’m talking about the successful ppl in the industry
Love your vernacular lol
I think you’re spot on with the directors expression but also showcases Andrew Garfield at the time over his treatment in Hollywood… subtle Spider-Man references with his sticky hands in one scene…
i watched this movie because of Rich Vreeland (Disasterpeace), who also did the score for It Follows. i'm not great at taking meaning from film so this video was immensely helpful for my understanding of Under the Silver Lake
Real talk! I love this movie bro lmao. I picked it up cuz I fw It Follows heavy and it exceeded my expectations.
Insanely underrated and underappreciated! It Follows was also one of my favorites but Under the Silver Lake is next level.
