The opposite can be said for Griffith when he "saves" Casca from that lecherous nobleman. While Griffith looks like a hero, he only tossed Casca a sword to defend herself. Furthermore, Griffith's soldiers also killed the carriage driver and stole the nobleman's belongings. Not exactly heroic in retrospect.
It's so obvious that the things guts says and thinks during black swordsman and lost children is just his way of shielding himself and not showing his emotion, he tells himself things like "they should have been stronger" because he can't mentally let himself be vulnerable same as he can't physically let himself be vulnerable and sleeps with his sword, he's a hardened killer but not a sociopath he has empathy towards other people especially women and children but he doesn't let it get to him because if he did he mentally wouldn't be capable of fighting the apostles

Black swordsman arc was tragic, he was so angry at everything he lost and he couldnt mourn the loss of everyone and just wanted to blind everything out with pure rage even when he still had a little left from the eclipse
Even someone with a will as intense and determined as guts basically went totally insane for quite awhile after the Eclipse. Even Casca, who was one of the strongest and most capable people in all of Berserk went *completely* insane and regressed to childhood for 20 years worth of volumes.
Man, one of my favorite things about the 1997 anime is how faithfully it captured the manga panels with it's still shots. The sheer atmosphere it has is unreal, something no other adaptation (in my opinion) achieved till now.
Guts tried to pretend like he didn't care about nobody, cause he wanted to distance himself, but he wouldn't kill and butcher every thug if he only wanted to convey a message, and that's not the face of a man who enjoys killing
