I was homeless for a little over a year - the city funded shelter I stayed at was very much the same. There was even an outbreak of tuberculosis and we were ignored or thrown out if we asked for medical help of any kind - I was kicked out for a month for being caught coughing up blood and needing to be rushed to the hospital. When I got back a man pulled a knife on a woman and tried to kill her in plain sight of the staff ( who did nothing again ) and was let off with just a warning not to make a commotion. When all this evidence of violence, and abuse, and miscare of the homeless was brought to our mayors attention, he decided the best course of action was to move the shelter to a remote outskirt of the city so it wouldn't be his problem. I've met so many homeless people that just got fucked over by life and because of how society treats the homeless, and how our governments only have disdain for them rather than compassion they fall further and further away from getting a home again. I've had a homeless guy come into my store maybe once a week to exchange his coins for bills so it was easier to carry, it happened often enough that sometimes he would come in even if he didn't have enough for food. There was a tip jar where I worked (more like a cup that you empty after your shift) and I've given him a fiver or a couple extra dollars so he could eat that night. He never ever came in afterwards expecting anything, and he has outright refused it and left on a few occasions because (I assume) he did have enough on him to eat. I haven't worked there for years and I moved cities, but I really hope he's doing okay.
Same thing I went through. Was working full time, lost my residence because of a female (NOT financial or abuse and no drugs). Bought a tent, but people don't realize how much money it takes just to get into an apartment or any kind of residence. Having no way keep food fresh, had to eat out a lot. Had to pay money to take a shower at a local truck stop. The list goes on and on. A person at my work let me stay to save money. Now, I have my own house, 2 cars, and the fridge has food. I have an extra room that I let people who really want to better themselves stay in. So far in the last 2 years, I've helped 9 people get off the streets. The only thing I demand is no drugs in my house. If you see a person in desperation, please help them, one day it could be you seeking help.

I was homeless at fifteen til my thirty's and the biggest assumption upon us homeless was that we were lazy. People often see homeless people sleeping during the day and think "You see, they're just lazy people". It wasn't til I was homeless that I found out that you're up all night defending yourself from crazies, avoiding being robbed by junkies, being hassled and relocated by police, and basically trying survive the night. The daylight and activity of the moving public provided the security I needed to rest, but maybe I was just being malnourished and lazy.
I am sorry you had to go through that. Thank you for sharing tho...now I understand the sleeping during the day. Where I live we often misjudge homeless ppl because we assume they're going to buy drugs when they ask for change; if however they ask for change and states that it's to buy food, I ask what they want to eat and buy it instead hoping that they eat the meal. Until you realize that he was only asking the staffers and not the people that are supposed to help. It is basically like a hospital surveying only the doctors about how the patients are being treated and not surveying the nurses and patients themselves as well. Not heartwarming. Heartbreaking how disconnected this mayor is and many mayors like him.
@@DaniGirl6 With all due respect but who asked what exactly? Did you not watch the video? The mayor just sat quietly and observed the violence silently while in the shelter. About the only conversation he had was with a homeless resident which was very limited in the form of advice to protect oneself. The mayor did not need to ask questions when he had functioning eyes. By the way this Mayor is not disconnected from reality like yourself. Why? Because there was no guarantee the mayor himself would live to wake up the next morning in a shelter like that. Dying in bed (with a lot "help" doing so) when one is even pretending to be homeless is a real possibility so do not presume to even know what you are talking about.
But, his assistant was aware that he was there, right? I mean, if there was an altercation, and the Mayor rose up and confronted the staff proving who he way, I don't know, by asking them if they have ever seen him on the news . . . You have harsh words for someone explorion this, so, maybe you've been part of the problem that allows this to get this bad, not just in one city, but many. So, how about questuons such as, how many of the staffers SERVING the Mayor's office lost THEIR jobs? What was the result of the investigation into what appears to be some sore of organized crime thing that was (onviously) running things after the lights go out. You know, the people that would come in a nd go out, doing whatever they wanted to the people trying to just - get some sleep so maybe in the mornong they'd look healthy enough to employ - or even "look normal enough" that some "average" man, woman OR child could look at them without fear in their eyes?

Well he clearly doesn't know the pulse of the common man. Otherwise he didn't have to go out there to find out. But by doing so, he showed that he's willing to make that effort and experience it himself. Which is more than you can say for like 95% of all other officials.
I mean to be fair it's not just him, most of the population would not have a clue how it is to actually live and sleep in one of those shelters. Props to him for wanting to experience it first hand!

We stopped allowing people to be down on their luck and instead blame them for it. That's the single greatest myth in America and one that justifies the tremendous disparity in equality here. It allows the fortunate few to hoard great wealth without guilt by claiming to have earned it while spreading the lie that all it takes is hard work and dedication. It's a lot more than that. It also takes an incredible amount of luck.
@@codacreator6162 The Mayor did a great job but I personally would like to see a follow up program, that actually gives these homeless people a "hand up" and not just a "hand out"! Giving them Shelter and Food is necessary but giving them skills to perform a job, is the optimum gift!

Trying to understand this perspective. What are you expecting from them? Everyone is going about their business, they're worried about not getting stuck at the next red light or making it to their appointment or getting back to work from lunch. I'm sure you would be the same if you were out taking care of errands and wanted to get home or whatever. What look are you expecting people to give you? Or are you always secretly hoping someone is just going to randomly hand you $50,000, or something? Sometimes people have bad experiences with homeless people, sometimes it can happen multiple times a week. Do you really blame me for seeing an obviously homeless person and wondering if this one, too, is going to start hitting me up for money out of nowhere, touch my car, or do some straight up crazy shit? If I choose a walking path that doesn't purposely put me closer because I don't want to smell that smell of a person that habitually doesn't bathe again? What do you want from me? @@syedhowell, let's be real UC Boss is the CEO or higher doing the job and making changes, as he sees thing not right, This is a Mayor, essentially a worker drone, he's as much an employee of the city and state as the sewage workers, he needs votes to make changes, he needs friend higher up to make the needed changes (IE the money to make those changes worthy). I agree with you, if this were a business, the changes would be immediate. But this case is different, he still has to work within the confines of his job and government machine. We all know government is the slowest to change, of anything you'll ever see. Even in cases of discrimination or in this case, people taking advantage of these downtrodden peoples, change in government time is barely noticeable. Would I like to see change right now? Yes, I would. I've been homeless, so I have walked a mile (miles actually) in those shoes. But common sense tells us that real and solid change will have to take time to fully implement. @@MasterHero10000 in a nutshell, I was dating someone in florida. We were engaged but neither of us were independent. She lived with family for medical reasons and they moved to Texas. I had a business in florida and decided to migrate it to Texas. Hurricane harvey happened just as I sold my place. I got to Texas, had no marketable skills for the remaining job market. So then I ended up on the street after an eviction from an apartment. I was filing for disability and staying anywhere I could. Burned down buildings, parking lots, the woods. I did everything I could to maintain sanity, hygiene, nutrition, sleep etc. I won disability and heard about this place that's income based and has openings for the homeless. My first disability payment came about a week or so before a room became available. It's been 14 months and I'm finally completely stable. Working on my credit score and education now. While on the street did I ever do drugs? No. I got drunk twice. People I was around did meth, kush, etc. But I stayed far away from that.
@Layth Hammad yeah school was rough. Especially high school. Just figure out what you enjoy, how you learn and mix them together. Something I wish they thought in school was how to learn. There's plenty of tutorials on youtube on how to learn at a college level effiency. Things like attention span modification, anki cards, memory palace, props, sleep patterns, etc. Most people struggle learning things they can't relate to. They have no problem memorizing music or movies. How is it possible to memorize the script of a 2.5-3 hour movie, complete with chorography and timing? You just gotta figure out how you learn. These years are the best years for your brain to soak information. Trust me. The neurons in your brain starve at your age. As you get older, it gets harder to learn. It's always easier to learn things if you have something to connect it to. So learn a little about carpentry, spanish, plumbing, jewelry making, physics, how paper is made, how the postal system works. Anything you can find. I promise 2 years of that will serve you for the next 60 years. Good luck. Oh and if you ever feel like you're highschool years suck and you wanna die or whatever, just remember, kids go through puberty and a lot changes. Look into Eric erikson's theory of socioemotional development. It will save you a lot of emotional turmoil. I would do anything to go back to the 7th and 8th grades again. Build your life. This is your life. You are the author. Everyone else is just characters. You're the star of your story. Build your dreams. Life will get hard, so enjoy these years.

Ya jua gotta remember, comprehend . . . 'we're all a few paychecks, from being homeless' ! 💀🇺🇸
My experience was regarded as for the most part mild, even though two years later I still wake up in the middle of the night afraid I'm not in my apartment, but back sleeping on that shelter floor, desperately holding a knife for protection as people trade needles at my back.
The mayor in this story is absolutely incredible, and I so desperately wish more people in politics were like him. Our country would probably be a much better place

@@finrothsmith7995 I can relate
I've been there and can fully agree. A lot of people dont realize how fucked up our economy is, but then no one seems to listen to the people who have to shoulder the burden.
If you see a person in desperation, please help them, one day it could be you seeking help.

i found that we all need love and we should give more than we get because love grows like a weed if you let it.
This was so heartwarming. Thank you Mayor for during your own investigation. 🙏🏽
The above, is in fact to your well thought repy, Titan, God of . . . something. Thunder is - informative. Titan is - some mytical "God" which is of course, is always a human form, right?
So, you commented to as if this other person "even watched" this in it's entirety. Ummm, I think you may want to go back to school and learn how to take nores, or think more clearly or something, because clearly you've missed a lot, not only in how to pay attention for a WHOLE 10 minutes, and actually HEAR what IS, and IS NOT said.
It was all a publicity stunt because he was running for congress. He wasn't even over the shelter he stayed in, and no one lost their jobs because of him. The whole video it a complete lie.
This is how the government should work. This instance is one in a million. I wish it wasn't. We need someone like him in every part of government
Its good that he doesnt just take the word of others. If he had he never would have known the truth. More cities need people like him
He should run for President in 2024. I would vote for him!
Hello Mr. Terry Thomas,
I agreed.
USA needs the new President as him who wants the best for Americans instead for himself and his family.
Definitely!!! I will vote for him 2024.
This is what we really need in this world, the high rank officer to go into the situation itself without relying or just take the words from the staff below about things ... well done to the Mayor!! The guy clearly wants to make his city a better place for everyone
This Mayor is certainly a presidential candidate , a man in touch with the grassroots, a man who knows the pulse of the common man, the plight of the lowest common denominator , he can make this shining city greater than ever before !
I think he is a good man to be a president, the baptism of a president's is death and murder. I don't wish him to a president, mayor is a perfect place for him.
Sadly, he will most likely get destroyed by political plays; Even though we all know he'd be the best candidate.
No, no, no, keep him at the level where he serves the people. Let him get seasoning as a public servant, and leave the president talk to the side. If he solves this locally, let the other municipalities learn from this example. We need better for the homeless.

Amen 🙏. Thank you Mr. Mayor For What you Do in Helping people. God Bless you.
I am super impressed by the Mayor in this for not only walking in the homeless shoes for a day but giving them a voice. If you haven't been down on your luck then you probably wont appreciate the little things like the active involevment that he has shown. Well done Mayor, Well done.
I've found that many homeless already have skills, but alcohol and drugs put them on the streets. I've met Engineers, Draftsmen who worked in the automotive industry who were working at temporary agency's as day labors because they couldn't get their substance abuse under control.
The mayor is a very compassionate human being, who went the extra mile to find out how he could better help his fellow man.
compasionate no ... not gullible would be accurate ... he heard everyone saying all is fine yet homeless people were always complaining ... so he checked the other side of the story ... and found those he thought were trust worthy werent ... compassionate would have been immediately removing his disguise and forcing the shelter he was at to change then and there ... or else .... he waited until after he left and then made changes ... that is just showing he cares for his voters ... it does NOT show he is compassionate ... he just knows where some of his votes come from and that people dont complain for nothing ... its one thing if the complaint is ... this is blue i dont want blue as compared to I dont have any blankets to keep warm at night in the shelter ... the first is one of those noncomplaint complaints ... the other is an actual common complaint .. THAT is what he saw ...he saw the truth ... and he didnt like being a liar so he fixed it ... saving his own reputation ... he at least had the brass ones to go find out and then do something ... THAT is the special part of it all ... he checked the facts and found he was being lied to

@@hotfocaccia6070 No, we should choose more wisely. We live in a world where there isn't one distinct reality anymore, it seems everyone has their own idea of what is factual.
We should not only vote those we want to get elected in public office. Rather, we should make sure that the candidate possesses the qualification for the position, has the right intention, morally upright and God-fearing.

I'll push back in saying that he's not a politician, he's a public servant.
the hardest thing about being homeless in my eyes wasn't the struggle for food or for a warm place to sleep..but the look from people that I wasn't worth anyones time :(
Trying to understand this perspective.
Want me to walk up, smell your armpits, give you all my cash and my debit cards and the PIN and celebrate what a unique and important homeless person you are?
Or, to put it another way: were you actually worth anyone's time?

I think every public servant should do a week of it. Not necessarily homelessness but something, to experience what the poorest live like , all day every day.
Actually just apply for welfare or Emergency services 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳!! Those rules are awful ! Ask me I have a story or 2 !!!! The people that work there act like it’s their money !!!!
Yes, and do it properly. Years ago an English politician spent a week or two 'living' on jobseekers allowance. BUT he didn't haveto pay for gas, electric, water, jobhunting, etc. Just food. Oh, yeah, that proved we had plenty to live on!
A leader cannot lead without emphaty....one cannot feel emphaty without being in the same situation as those suffering...
Empathy doesn't request you to be in the same situation, it only requires you to be caring and understanding. This was far more than just simply empathy.
I can imagine how people feel by putting myself in their shoes, that's empathy, I don't actually have to experience it to be empathetic. But the best/worst teacher is the experience itself
He is such a courageous leader I ever knew. He tackled the problem in a way few people could dare to make it. I even acknowledge his unbreakable determination and his grit to learn the truth. That was a heroic act. I admire him sincerely.
