And bring some aluminum foil, some dental floss, a wand type lighter for candles, ya know what, screw it, bring a candle too, and a pen spring, and a regular BIC lighter too.
Thank you for making this video! A few years ago in the winter I pulled over to sleep in my van. Woke up and was completely covered in snow, miles away from a town and in the light of the morning, I realised I had parked on the peak of a huge hill so with wind chill factor I was at about -25. I ran my diesel van on veg oil and it had set solid and without the engine ruining I couldn't hear it up in the tank. I had about 400ml of hand sanitizer and used a little to burn on top of the injectors and the rest I heated the container with a lighter and squirted into the air intake. It was rough but it just about started. I always carry it in my van now!
I've been suggesting graphite as a crankcase lubricant for quite some time now, my thoughts on avoiding overheating would maybe be running a garden hose pouring water over the cylinder head and crankcase. This would maybe help dissipate some of the heat that the oil normally absorbs and dissipates.
I'm always open to input based on good data, that I'm sure PF will provide, but it would take a lot for me to go back to something else now. They're expensive, but otherwise they're the bomb.

You should switch to carburetor cleaner, it works even better than gas...and for those stubborn dirt and grime problems use carb cleaner immediately followed by fire LOL.
Great work. Always interesting. I was filling up my work van the other day and thought of something that I was always curious about... Is there a way to test the normal everyday gasoline we put in our vehicles? My vehicles' owners manual says to use "top tier, regular 87 octane". What exactly is "top tier" gas? Is there any benefit to using "top tier" gas? What happens when money is tight and you fill up with the cheapest budget gas you can find? Is all "top tier" gas even created equal? Orrrr, is it a big marketing gimmick? I've always wondered about the difference in quality between the different brands of gas within the same octane rating. Which one to look for? Which one to avoid? Either way, thanks for all the other mysteries you've solved...
"Top tier" is Shell and Chevron, primarily. Their quality control is tighter and their fuels have more additives in them for a number of reasons. Top tier diesel has a high cetane rating for easy cold starts and less smoke, as well as lubricity additives to make up for the ULSD requirement. Top tier gasoline has less contaminants and more detergents to decrease the amount of fuel system and combustion chamber deposits that form over time. All fuels will leave deposits in the fuel system and in the combustion chamber; just a fact of physics. The name of the game is to keep it as clean as possible.

With current prices and low availability of hand sanitizer, I almost think that hitchhiking would be a better option than pouring liquid gold into your tank, even if it worked. Or gets worse, right? I think I read a study that allergies are worst in people who 'over sanitize' (especially children)... their immune systems never 'learn' about germs and so overreact to any germ they encounter.
I am in no way saying this is the miracle cure, but here is my quick story. I have a 1994 Bronco with a 5.8L engine (61,000 miles its my baby), my rear main was leaking, I pulled the engine installed a new seal and yes I did use a micrometer to check the wear on the crank to ensure it was within specs, it was at the lower end but within specs. I used black permetex on the outside of the new seal, ensured everything was super clean (even installed new oil pan and pan gasket) reassembled the entire engine and had a small leak, at the rear main, really small like a spot about the size of a quarter on the driveway. Drove it for about 1000 miles still had this very small leak, so I was either going to pull the engine again (I'm really anal about leaks) but a buddy recommended I try "Blue Devil" rear main seal stuff. What the heck, snake oil never works but it was that or pull my engine again, so I used an 8 oz bottle of blue devil with a new oil change (Mobile One 10w-30) with a Mobile one oil filter after about a week, no kidding it stopped, its been about a month now. I've been keeping a piece of cardboard under my truck, nothing, no leak. Either the blue devil worked or the seal finally seated, maybe its something you could test, again I never buy into snake oil, except sea foam (yep I love that stuff) but Blue Devil has positive results in my truck...or the seal finally seated. My son (who is a Ford Master Tech) and I love your show.
Impressive results! I used the same product in a very, very leaky power steering rack and pinion and it stopped the bad leak immediately. That was over a year ago and haven't added a drop of PS fluid since. I was shocked that it did the job. Thanks for the positive comment!
Its a Ford, its normal to have oil leaks, even right after replacing seals...had every seal and gasket in a Ford Ranger 2.8L V6 engine replaced and it was leaking oil again the next day. Something to check is your PCV valve...if it isn't allowing the engine to vent properly it can cause excess pressure in the crank case and cause oil to be pushed out of seals and gaskets.
William Todd top end is spotless as far as clean. I ported and polished the intake, installed a mild cam and rolling rockers. I could have changed the dynamic inside the engine, but still no leak, had a small leak back of the valve covers but repaired that, could have been the perfect storm or the snake oil worked. I’d try it again, all the while planning to pull the engine, but the stuff worked for me.
I wonder why this one appeared in my recommended at this particular moment in time. Oh wait, the price of hand sanitiser has gone through the roof recently for some reason, probably cheaper to run an engine on petrol LOL
Awesome test. How about testing gas with water? How much water does it take to stall an engine then how effective is it to use HEET gas antifreeze and water remover in the gas. Will engine run on the same gas with water after the HEET treatment?
This would be a good test. Because there is water in gasoline sometimes. I bought a gallon of gas one time to start a barrel fire of wood and the damn gas wouldn't ignite. Poured some in a paper cup, threw in a match and still wouldn't ignite! And was SHELL gas!
My brain started working and I edited the comment and took that out after a search turned up the answer. Sorry. Derp! Have you given any thought to trying gases, like hydrogen, acetylene, etc., etc.?
@@mycelia_ow There is multiple types of sanitizers. Many sanitizers have to be cut with a chemical or other substance for the sanitizer to be safe and effective to use. The sanitizer in this video is a commercial grade sanitizer, and is incredibly more powerful than the hand sanitizers found in grocery store.
Short answer, yes. At least in older diesel engines. Not sure about modern ones. Truckers back in the day would dump their used engine oil in the tanks at oil changes. Free BTUs and power. The diesel engine can also run on vegetable oil, but again, not sure about modern diesel engines. Modern diesel engines have a lot of emissions stuff on them that will probably get ruined if you run anything other than diesel.
He comes home with gallon of lube his wife is going to smile ear to ear 😂 then he says it's for a project on the lawnmower... She will start throwing his crap outside lol

i'm very impressed that that engine has exploded all over the place already. Well done briggs n stratton. You should send your engines to project farm for testing.
I'm almost 100% certain isopropanol has been trialed as a fuel additive at some point - just seems so obvious Maybe try running the engine on pure anhydrous methanol (like some racers do)?

I saw this in my recommended videos and thought "Now THAT is a timely video!"
Thanks for the feedback.
I wonder why this one appeared in my recommended at this particular moment in time.
Oh wait, the price of hand sanitiser has gone through the roof recently for some reason, probably cheaper to run an engine on petrol LOL
lol. Thanks

@@bulletbill1104 So tempted to give a sarcastic reply but I'll restrain myself.
I know, it was a joke.
Project Farm finely you said something else otter then thanks for the feed back

Awesome test. How about testing gas with water? How much water does it take to stall an engine then how effective is it to use HEET gas antifreeze and water remover in the gas. Will engine run on the same gas with water after the HEET treatment?
Thanks for the video idea!
This would be a good test. Because there is water in gasoline sometimes. I bought a gallon of gas one time to start a barrel fire of wood and the damn gas wouldn't ignite. Poured some in a paper cup, threw in a match and still wouldn't ignite! And was SHELL gas!
Shell gas was the problem to begin with. Ever see what it looks like in an engine that's used Shell gas? It turns stuff green inside the engine.
LOL! I can't believe you got that poor engine to run again.
Great video and testing Todd!
Thank you! I tried the RC Nitro Fuel in the past, but I should probably try it in a 2-stroke engine in the future.
My brain started working and I edited the comment and took that out after a search turned up the answer. Sorry. Derp!
Have you given any thought to trying gases, like hydrogen, acetylene, etc., etc.?
hydrogen, lol "H-Bomower" or "Hinden-Mower?
You beat the hell out of that poor engine but it still keeps up with you. Love your videos.
Thank you!!!
3:36 Ladies and gentleman, we got him
lol. Thanks
Wish I had some of that now
Thanks for watching!
Wow - the msds doc is pretty interesting... Saying their hand sanitizer should not be in contact with skin... Shady.
Can you link to the doc?
justin h I thinks it’s just meaning if there was a situation where you had a bunch spilled on you, you can get alcohol poisening from it
@@chaegibson720 This sanitizer isnt for human use. Its for cleaning food contact surfaces.
@@HereticJon then why does "hand" sanitizer exist?
@@mycelia_ow There is multiple types of sanitizers. Many sanitizers have to be cut with a chemical or other substance for the sanitizer to be safe and effective to use. The sanitizer in this video is a commercial grade sanitizer, and is incredibly more powerful than the hand sanitizers found in grocery store.
Heretic Jon but the bottle literally says HAND sanitizer meaning for use on HUMAN hands 🙄
We would need that now...

Will a diesel motor run on old oil?
Great video idea!
vaporized oil acts like diesel fuel and ignites under the extreme compression
Short answer, yes. At least in older diesel engines. Not sure about modern ones. Truckers back in the day would dump their used engine oil in the tanks at oil changes. Free BTUs and power. The diesel engine can also run on vegetable oil, but again, not sure about modern diesel engines. Modern diesel engines have a lot of emissions stuff on them that will probably get ruined if you run anything other than diesel.
Thats exactly what happens when a diesel runs away
Simple diesels will be fine, modern HDIs and common rail systems will cough up a lung if you try it.
What about using ky jelly as a engine lube
Thanks for the video idea!
I
This is got to be one of the most requested videos that he hasn't done yet. Maybe it's difficult to get in the quart size!
I use k y jelly on my wife and she ceases up all the time except her mouth she won’t shut up.
He comes home with gallon of lube his wife is going to smile ear to ear 😂 then he says it's for a project on the lawnmower... She will start throwing his crap outside lol
Have you tried baby oil for a crankcase lube?
Not yet. Thanks for the video idea!
Theres another channel "lifeOD" i think, they tested it on a toyota camry and it held up pretty good
You are the greatest scientist on the internet.
For this; I thank you
You are welcome!
The precautionary statements are similar to that of Q-Tips - they're generally used as swabs to clean your ears yet they explicitly say not to do that.
Great point.
Who here actually uses a q tip to clean a keyboard like they suggest???
Don't clean you ears with them it just pushes the stuff back.
MG_Anon sounds like an all natural ear plug!
except it's permanent
2019: people using hand sanitizer
2020: people fighting over the last bottle of hand sanitizer
Thanks for watching!
Using sanitizer increased the engine compression by 3 PSI, what it did to the engine?
probably cleaned a small carbon deposit...
The engine was seized at the beginning, it was simply workin long enough to start working itself more free.
The most fun and educational show, PERIOD!!!!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Video Idea : will an engine run off Xylene, MEK, Acetone, or reducers?
Thank you for the video idea!
NO. I work with those solvents. Xylene has a flash point of 38°C
CAN E-85 RUN IN A GAS ENGINE? (Basically Corn Oil)
Thank you. I put together a video on that more recently
I know our car drove fine on it (Škoda Felicia) but you could smell it everywhere
Wow this is so relevant right now.. Corona virus 2020
Thank you
i'm very impressed that that engine has exploded all over the place already. Well done briggs n stratton. You should send your engines to project farm for testing.
Thank you for the feedback

distill some moonshine. for erm , scientific purposes :)
Thanks for the video idea!
Sad that you can't legally distill moonshine there.
He also doesn’t drink 😂
no need to drink it, run a lawnmower on it
Moonshine has a lot of car history behind it
What would happen if you put gun powder in the intake
Bad things. lol
haha ... not a good idea
Myth busters tried this. It's very difficult to regulate.
Ummmm... A BOMB!!??
I'm almost 100% certain isopropanol has been trialed as a fuel additive at some point - just seems so obvious
Maybe try running the engine on pure anhydrous methanol (like some racers do)?
Thank you
iso heet :)
Well atleast you got a nice clean engine. And i love how you seize up an engine, and still make it run
Thank you for the feedback!
The reason they add the small percentage of isopropyl alcohol is for tax reasons, because it means you can't drink it
Thanks for the feedback
Well, currently the reverse would be very interesting.
Great point. Thank you
The reverse? As in can you use gasoline as a hand sanitizer? XD
You predicted the future.
Thanks for the feedback.
When you watched the video once. Then it's recommended again by youtube, probably because of contexte. Then you go to see it again, just because PF is awesome and desserve max views, and to look comments.
Thanks for the feedback.
The question should be "will fuel work as hand sanitizer?"
I'm pretty sure e85 would work fine.
Thanks for the feedback.
Algorithms running overtime this week with the keywords here.haha
Peace and love PF
Great point! Thank you
I feel like if this guy fixed your car it would never break.
Thanks for watching.
Thumbs up for even coming up with a scenario where attempting this is even plausible 👍👍
Thank you
Try using nail polish remover as fuel for an engine please!
Well that should just clean everything right out of the combustion chamber since nail polish remover is mostly acetone LOL.
William Todd 😂
That's just acetone
When I was like 8 I did in a lawn mower that never worked put it in and cranked it let out a big pop like a gun shot..added gas's and it ran like a new mower
The engine is now safe from the coronavirus...
Thanks for watching!

lol. Hope you enjoyed the video. The engine is germ free!
this video didn't age well. you just burned through $400 of sanitizer
