Mini Sweep Picking Arpeggios (Guitar Lesson RO-004) How to play
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 июл 2010
- In this guitar lesson we check out some mini sweep picking arpeggio patterns. I take you through a basic string pattern and explain the technique and show you a few variations and licks but you should go explore this concept yourself too.
Few extra tips, TAB and soem other hints I forgot to mention on the web site too. Hope you dig.
BTW - yes I know I said variations kinda strange, it was some kind of stutter thing, but I couldn't be arsed re-filming.
And I do know that I'm not great at this stuff, before you shred heads have a go about the fact that my sweeping is a bit sloppy. But i's heavily requested and I can teach it ok I think. I'm not a technical kinda guy, and not that keen on become one!

Nice lesson Justin!!
Wow
'I'm not very good at full sweep picking, but...'
This just like.. skyrocketed my respect for you.
Not because I don't like sweeping, I do (I confess I think it's an overvalued technique but a great one nonetheless) but that it showcases you're still an improving guitarist just like all of us, and that you're still able to help us along the way. I don't know, just made me admire you more since I always had this impression of you as the 'all knowing guitar guru' and perfectionism is kind of boring :p
Justin is humble and a great teacher!
One of the best intro to sweep picking arpeggios lessons ever! Been wanting to learn this to advance my skills.
Thanks Justin. I started playing, using your books and videos and they are excellent. I then went to a guitar teacher but have since moved 400 miles so I'm still using your awesome lessons. Whenever I get stuck, you seem to have the perfect lesson to get unstuck. Thanks again :)
Brilliant lesson Justin - thanks so much. It is difficult when you come from other styles of playing and I love your honesty and then you just blew me away with your speed. Excellent! and a really clear lesson.
Ive spent weeks looking for a good site for my 16yr who loves guitar. This looks like the best laid out site. Justins communication is straight to the point. camera work perfect. All very clear concise and revelant.
Whooo thanks Justin! Your lessons are my fuel for playing guitar. Not only getting it started but also making it run smoothly.
best lessons i've seen for years ....you are a natural teacher thanks
this is the most incredible video ive used on youtube. for years ive given up on sweep picking, but now i can do this excercise. God willing i will get the speed, but i can now do the actual technique. wanna learn how to sweep pick-USE THIS VIDEO! ! ! !
by far one of the finest guitarists and best tutors...keep it up man!!!
Not just that, he's also explaining it in such a sympathetical and beginner-friendly tone. It's like much for little.
I just started out with sweep picking and it's surprisingly easy. This really opens up a whole new dimension of guitar playing.
Thanks a lot - a great video - clear instruction and nicely filmed so it is easy to understand. I've been playing guitar for many years and have never got the hang of sweep picking. I think this will help, as long as i am patient! Your humility is a nice quality. Thanks for the help!
Dude, you're actually awesome for doing all these lessons.
justin is awesome at lessons. i've learned quite a bit from him. now im doing giant "slide sweep taps" cleanly and easily. gotta start of sloo yall.
This is fun stuff made easy. you are a great teacher. I'm hooked!
Teaching is certainly well worded. But man I'm suffering for this good stuff. Making good progress though.
Great tutorial. Thanks for taking the time to create/post it with both fretboard and right hand picking motion!
This is such a helpful video! I've been trying tons of sweep picking drills, but this one seems to work very well. Thanks a lot!
Good job making Telecasters look cool =P
And, you are honestly the only one here on the Tube that teaches me anything.
after you`re finished with your sentence i always make 100 percent sense of it and if I don`t, you catch up and say "remember to..." or "keep in mind..." and i get it. my point is that you cover every aspect of everything I need to learn and even something i don`t.
You`re awesome.
Great job justin. You just keep giving us more. Take care Bro
Your videos are the best. Thanks for all your hard work & sharing!!
You get there man! The more time you do it slow, the better it gets in the end, took me a few months and i still wasn't fast just fluent, then you get fast, but its worth it, so fun to play! And I love the sound!!
thanks for this lesson. your lessons are always very helpful
justin you really do rock, keep it going man, your videos are awesome.
Love your lessons! Thanks!
Justin: At 16 I later played with Jose Fleciano in 1966, I was the first one to have him experience a electric guitar! A 1957 625 Rickenbacker stereo orange-burst from a music store going out of business after 10 Yrs in 1966, New 1st guitar they bought in 1956, I lucked out. I ran a 1966 Vox Royal Guardsman "Jose" was surprised about the sound! I later turned down"The Sundowners" band who recorded for "The Monkeys",I was a H.S. Junior & couldn't quit school! thanks for the New "Tips" my friend.
justin, that is some crazy speed,i wonder will i ever get there!
THANKS mr justin all technique that you've been taught always i use for my songs :)
Great work Justin. I especially like the extra "lick-tips" in this one :)
Great and useful videos......helped me a LOT!!!
superb and understandable tutorial! THANKS A LOT!
This is a great way to introduce people to shredding! And sweep picking :P THX a lot! :)
Great!...Truly impressive. You made it possible for me to do this. (Been playing for 40 yrs, all styles, but I could NOT do that !) Now its coming on good. Thank You so much!
thank you sooo much. really really well explained
Very nice! Thanks for the lesson.
Just Awesome! Thanks!
Great lesson. Thank you.
I have never held a guitar in my hands before, but watching Your fingers running so effortlessly up and down and left ang right across this instrument is nothing short of a STUNNING EXPERIENCE ! Tomorrow I'm gonna buy myself my first musical tool, of course none other than a guitar !
How did it work out?

Great video as usual sir. For beginners, I would suggest starting the pattern with your second note---the hammer-on results in the need for a hesitation prior to hitting the third note. You can just rake straight down, then hammer the C on the E-String. On the upstroke, you start on the A on the high E-rake up until you get to the G string, then pull off to the C. Again, this makes it one continuous rake. Hope this makes sense.
great lesson!
Thanks justin!
Great job!
Dhanyawad sir loveing from Nepal ♥️
Thanks man you are awesome.
READ THIS - All my life I thought I could never play these sweeps...but after seeing this I decided to try....I think I played this 1000 times...but you will get faster and faster. After 2-3 weeks of only doing this one sweep I starter trying some harder ones and found out that if you start slowly and learn it 100% and than you add some speed. Now I am 3 months into sweeping and I am starting to get the Jason Becker sweeps. If I can learn it than so can YOU!
Nice sweep picking dude, i know what you mean when you say its hard to do those long arpeggios, i even think its cooler when you use short ones because you can fit them into just about anything and even experiment with different fingerings, so NICE VIDEO!
Thanx, dude! You're rock!
thx for the video justin :D
Justin Awesome!
Man! This is the first time I've seen a logical & patient way to develop the finger timing coordination with sound picking form for this technique. When in my teens I did not have money for lessons but I learned by ear and developed search & test with patience & Practice to finding best & accurate gauge.1st easiest placement on finger board. I could play a record and at the time the song finished I knew the rhythm foundation, bass & finally lead solo part by the time the record finished. Thanks!
hey thanks justin. your the best. this sweep picking really is hard up towards the low E. Also NeoClassicalFan shows more advanced sweep scales and licks.
Even Justin is practicing! we should too!!
Could you do a video more on 3 and 4 string sweep picking arpeggios with diagrams showing the arpeggio shapes best to use major and minor?
Mind = Blown!
No justin no!! You gotta teach us how to use our left hand little fingers! (i.e the diminished sweep :P You will get some more stretches on the top note of the sweep. But other than than, amazing lessons, ive seen EVERY SINGLE ONE so far, i dont know where i would be without you man.
very helpful thanks
Holy shit I can actually do it. And quickly. I never thought I could play this quickly. Thanks!! :D
@ieatcheez4breakfast telecaster, Fender Telecaster, referred to as the Tele, they're nice if you like sharp cool tones.
@RockPwner It's a customised Tele. He gives the details in one of his videos. I think it has a Gibson mini humbucker on the neck, standard Tele middle and a seymor duncan stack on the bridge.
Nice Justin :), was looking for some sweep picking tut's :D
nice post brada
@xtw1tch3s If you are referring to the diminished shape , Yngwie mostly uses a 3 string shape.
thanks justing :)
thank you so much!
I've been watching a lot of your stuff and I want to say thank you. You have helped me get out of that solo rut I was in by watching lots of your vids. I was curious if you might try and figure out the song jailhouse by sublime, I've just not been able to figure it out. Rock on Justin!!!!
You master. Thank you
hey Justin... i am following your sweep techniques and its woring!!! :) i guess next two months i will sendyou improved
As my band made me play the A tout le monde solo (Megadeth) I'm kinda forced to learn sweeping now :)
This really helped A LOT, although I still find it hard to go from 3 to 4 strings.
Big thanks
greets from mexico! ur'e lessons are really useful! are u going to gve private lessons again??
Its more of a tool box kind of thing if you choose to think about it that way. For example, he is showing you an arpeggio of an inverted chord. You don't always have to start on the root. If the music is vamping on an A minor chord, you "target" the notes from that chord, which can include the minor 7th (G). Also the arpeggio, in my opinion, shows you the location of the target tones while practicing it, after you've got the shape down, you can pick and choose what ever point you want to start.
I'm actually surprised, I didn't know you were able to do sweep picking, that's a really impressive technique.
3 string sweeps are way easier than 5 or 6. But yeah, it surprised me as well. I used to watch this guy's videos a long, long time ago when starting to play and I literally just remembered him, so I checked this one out.
He now has a quite big channel and website. Makes me wonder how I never really followed it...
@SuperARandall It's all the blues man. Many musicians rely on this scale...it's all about putting your own personal twist on it, which is why these guys got so big.
Hey man, i love your videos.. ive been teaching myself how to play guitar for like a year now, and your videos have been a real cornerstone for my playing... i have a problem tho.. i really want to learn what i need to learn in the right order so i dont miss basics or anything, so do you have any suggestions in terms of which concepts of guitar i should learn first? my goal is to play like how you play in this video, to do sweep picking and solos and stuff...
Wow, no wonder why I can't do this. I wasn't SWEEP PICKING! I'm such a noob lol. I still need to build more speed though... Anyway, thnx! You're the best!
@JustinSandercoe Uh oh! Commentator's curse Justin m'boy! Neh mind, I've just 'liked' it. :-) Have introduced my nephew to your vids and made up a DVD with your RUclips vids. He's recently taken up guitar at school. Thanks again for making your stuff available to us all.
l love this video.
Hi, great lesson and great tone with a beautiful guitar. May I ask about your frets? Seems like they are like half height of some modern jumbos. Thanks.
Damn i'm mever going to remeber all of this :(
@JustinSandercoe Justin what up with the one dollar bill in the wall?
btw love all your lessons ur one of the best teachers ive seen keep the lessons coming!!!
Thank you =)
thats one hell of a telecaster
watch this in HD it looks amazing haha
@arontao Hang in there! That's how all the best guitarists, like justin here, got where they are today :) were probarly at the same level, and we should both be patient, and we'll make it!
It takes time....just keep on trying. When you master it SLOWLY than begin to add speed. I used 150-200 hours on mastering a Jason Becker sweep solo.....it takes time. But the start is the worst....doday i am getting the hand on new sweeps much faster than at the beginning. KEEP ON....DONT GIVE UP....it will pay off :-)
Hey Justin, is that the Eric Johnson pick !?! Wondered were I left it!
lol!
Justin, U Rock! Now can I have your tele? Ha,ha
from Texas.
@JustinSandercoe hey great tone...how do you get quite a fat tone from the fender??
is it my idea or teles are awesome guitars for everything? :D
What do you use, settings and pedals to get that sound out of your tele?
I’m the complete opposite lol. I find the big sweeps easy and the little sweeps the most difficult 😂. Still learning how to do the little ones
what model tele is that. i like thw pickup configuration, and it sounds nice
looks like you have some frsh strings there justin :)
may i suggest a reason you didnt get into this very much.. probably because they're boring mind numbing and have no feeling or soul to them..
but still enjoying your other lessons. thanks for helping us all Justin.
I wanna ask one question.... if i pick the last note (down stroke) instead of pull off, will it be a bad thing to do ?
should work with a metronom, starting at about 50 and moving up by one once you are comfortable with the speed. it will seem slow and borign at first but if you raise your best speed by one each day it will be easier to become faster
Hey Justin how long have u been playing
echo FTW!!!
Jinxed! ;O
does he have anything else on sweep picking? this is a technique i have yet to try.
nice! what kind of tele? never seen it...
