Two Tips about the Flight planner on the TBM930. 1) you can scroll through the flight plan by “grabbing” inside an the list itself like you would swipe on your cell phone. And 2) you’re not allowed to enter enroute waypoints after you’ve entered an arrival or approach procedure. You must enter the enroute fixes prior to specifying approaches and arrivals.
Another rule of thumb for the descend: To achive a perfect 3° descend your ROD should be 5x your GS. If you descended with 300KT groundspeed a 1500ft/min descend will get you just there. This is also really handy to check on final approach with any airplane, if you fly 5xGS you are in a stable 3° descend. So for a 60kt approach with a cessna you will only descend at 300ft/min while in an A320 at 140kts you will get about 700-800 ft/min
RNAV can be flown with autopilot, you just have to intercept the glideslope at the final fix at the correct altitude and make sure that APR mode is on.
Yeah I was going to post about this myself. He needed to arm APR before JLI. It also would have followed the gradual turn it was supposed to if the approach had been armed. I did an RNAV approach into Salt Lake City a couple of days ago and the approach involved flying past the airport and doing a long sweeping turn to intercept the runway. The G1000 followed both the turn and the glideslope fine for me.
@@zOMGREI I'm a little confused about when to arm APR for RNAV, what's the protocol - I've missed it a few times and got it others and don't know why, what I tend to do now is try to be lower than I would expect further out and fly into the GS, but there must be a correct way : )
@@redjumping So the way I'm doing it atm probably isn't by the books (I gave up on the G1000 manual since there's just too much that isn't implemented in the sim currently), but basically as soon as I pass the last part of the enroute/arrival leg, I hit APR, hit PROC>ACTIVATE APPROACH>ENT and then just let it do its thing. I've had to mess with setting my own vertical speed a couple of times since it seems like some of the approaches have the wrong altitudes set, and there's no way to tell since the G1000 currently just shows -----FT as the altitudes for approaches and there doesn't seem to be a way to set these. The LNAV part of the approach phase always works fine though.
Also, the other giveaway seems to be that once you're in the approach phase the active leg won't change if the approach hasn't been activated. If you see a white GPS line instead of the magenta one, you're definitely not in an active approach and the plane is just flying LNAV along it.
@@zOMGREI Yes, this was the issue I have found. The GS is really the most important part I would say, but for some reason I find that with RNAV I'm not picking up the GS like you say. I'm starting to wonder whether (now you mentioned it) that I have been loading LNAV approaches instead. Generally I have been picking RNAV over ILS just to make it simpler so I dont have to go into the waypoints/airports and then find the ILS Nav frequency, but perhaps in my glee to see APRs other than ILS I have neglecting to see that they are LNAV and not RNAV : / maybe anyway...

Hey Squirrel. Great Video. One quick thing, if you press the Approach button (APR) anywhere before the final approach fix on a RNAV approach *given that you're at the correct altitude as specified on the approach plate* the Auto Pilot/GPS will guide the aircraft down to the runway just like it would during an ILS approach. Which makes RNAV approaches much easier as opposed to ILS where you'd have to set the frequency, switch to NAV1 and press the APR button.
You didn't notice that when you re-entered the NIKKL1 Departure, the MFD changed runway from 26R to 08L. My OCD was going through the roof! "WHY HAVEN'T YOU NOTICED!!". You should do a fly around the world. A live stream. Just take off from any airport and flight straight until you reach the same airport. I'd watch that.
I am always surprised that there is people who actually down-vote videos like that. What did they expect from the video and why don't they express their expectations then?
Hey SQ any chance you could do some flights around the Alaskan Bush.. maybe fly to Kavik.. as seen in "Life below zero" Maybe you could do a whole series where you fly to all the locations in that show ! Life below Zero is HUGE in the US!
I tried to do an IFR flight following ATC. Their directions for altitude seemed impossible to keep up with. If I tried to come down "too soon" they complained. If I waited for them to tell me to decrease altitude I would have needed to be in a fighter jet :
I love SkyVector.. however, I noticed I cant seem to get the charts for international airports? Like for example.. EIDW or.. LOWI ? How can I access that for planning outside of the USA?
Hi Squirrel. It's been a few months, so you may have resolved this issue already. BARO button will only set STD if already at or above current FL, otherwise it will adjust QNH. Seems to only work above FL 180.
I learned a lot from this video! So, when I choose an aproach, or the atc gives me clearance for an aproach, I have to follow the altitude changes, even if the ATC didn't told me so. It's in the procedure, he didn't need to right? I was thinking that I needed to be aware of the FL, but the ATC should give me every clearance to change my altitude... I was trying myself to learn all this, and the MSFS2020 ATC left me 500ft above the glide slope. And I was not sure if it was a bug, or my mistake.
ATC in MFS is a bit wonky, often telling you to do stupid stuff like climb to FL210 when you're already doing the approach, only to then tell you to go down do 3000. Follow your flightplan, especially for the approach part.. You can request appropriate altitude from FMC or, if they're being dumb - straight up ignore them.
Would you mind making a video about various flight apps and websites, not necessarily going into detail about them, but briefly explaining what they're for and how you can use it as part of the sim experience? I know there's probably a lot on your plate, so it doesn't need to happen, but it would be very neat to see
33:55 I'm guessing the Flight Director is not following up the best rate of climb because you have activated the Vertical Speed mode on the autopilot. If you set it to Flight Level Change with the correct speed it should do it's thing. I don't know if this is correct though, just speaking out of my own experience :)
When you enabled VNAV, ALT (Altitude Hold) mode was still on. I'm assuming that's why it didn't work but know MSFS 2020 so far, it's equally possible that it's just another bug. Like no altitude adjustment knob on the G1000 system in the Beechcraft Baron G58.
thats got to be one of the smoothest landings I"ve ever seen.
So it would seem...

You should do a fly around the world. A live stream. Just take off from any airport and flight straight until you reach the same airport. I'd watch that.
When are you going to do another tutorial? Still so much to learn, like top of descent
I am always surprised that there is people who actually down-vote videos like that. What did they expect from the video and why don't they express their expectations then?
At 20:00 you loaded the SID for 08R instead of 26L
Just curious, if you have flown into USAF Airports like KVBG (Vandenberg AFB) or Edwards AFB (don’t remember identifier)..
I fly into/out of KLRF (Little Rock AFB) all the time. Planning to do a trip to KEDW at some point!
Great vid, I appreciate this one totally.
Very useful thankyou
Hey SQ any chance you could do some flights around the Alaskan Bush.. maybe fly to Kavik.. as seen in "Life below zero" Maybe you could do a whole series where you fly to all the locations in that show ! Life below Zero is HUGE in the US!
I tried to do an IFR flight following ATC. Their directions for altitude seemed impossible to keep up with. If I tried to come down "too soon" they complained. If I waited for them to tell me to decrease altitude I would have needed to be in a fighter jet :
19:34 TRM is right there in the document to the east there about 80º
I love SkyVector.. however, I noticed I cant seem to get the charts for international airports? Like for example.. EIDW or.. LOWI ? How can I access that for planning outside of the USA?
does anyone know of a free or low cost app that has ils approach plates for UK airports? Skyvector doesn't seem to have them for the uk.
You can use a vor to direct you to the airport you want to go
Nice, flying IFR is more enjoyable than VFR. In my opinion. Makes you think about things.
At 37:40 wow, what music did you use here ? Amazing.
The airport layout is almost accurate. I remember when Ontario was a smaller airport.
Hi Squirrel. It's been a few months, so you may have resolved this issue already. BARO button will only set STD if already at or above current FL, otherwise it will adjust QNH. Seems to only work above FL 180.
Avionics depending your autopilot will fly the RNAV right down to the runway...
The term would be insert transition that’s probably why it’s not working because Julian is technically a transition waypoint
so why cant I get these approach plates for airports in europe from skyvector? and how do I get them
ATC helps your decent when flying IFR
Wind 225@3? Looks like it!
Thank you for this!! I've been looking at skyVector for a week trying to figure out how to use it.
My car broke down once on the road right under the approach to the runway. The Marine base police came to make sure I was ok
I think you forgot to activate APR mode. The glide path should have done all the vertical work for you.
Done that flight many times.
Hi
Great video as usual!
Wondering how you manage to bring all the charts into the sim and show them. Are you in windowed mode?
Does SkyVector not have UK departure/ approach diagrams?
Nope. Seems only Nth America.
Why is your resolution in pillar box mode?
