Planes, Trains & Automobiles: The Best John Hughes Movie?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 сен 2024
- As far as John Hughes’ filmography goes, his best all-around film isn’t necessarily one of his teen classics like Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or The Breakfast Club. While those movies give this a run for its money, for many, the best movie he ever made was Planes, Trains & Automobiles. A comedy with heavy doses of heart, this road trip movie was a defining film for its stars, Steve Martin & John Candy. In this episode of John Hughes Revisited, we pay tribute to this classic.

“Those aren’t pillows” is one of the best lines ever
My husband quotes it every once in a while. LOL
He hates these cans is better
I’ve always wanted though, are the “pillows” his balls, his arse or his thighs?
John Candy is a Canadian comedy legend.
My aunt and her friends met him at a bar in Canada in the early 80s, and at first she had no idea who he was.
To this day she says he was one of the nicest people she ever met.
Truth
That's awesome.
The Canadian GigaChad
I believe it, absolutely! =D
My family has watched this movie every year for 3 decades. Every line is endlessly quotable
One of my absolute favorite movies ever. Owned it on VHS, DVD and now own it on Blu-Ray. Comedies form the 80’s, in particular, seem to have an insane level of rewatch-ability.
Back when movies still had magic.
Especially John Hughes movies! Ferris Bueller! Uncle Buck! Vacation!
That face Candy makes when Martin opens the cab door always makes me laugh! That and the devil scene just awesome.
John Candy had so much heart in this movie.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles is one of the best buddy films / road trips / holiday redemption movies ever made, full stop.
Midnight Run was the Restricted rated version of this movie.
_"Here's a good idea. Have a point. It's so much interesting for the listener."_
This movie hits all the right notes. Absolute classic.
This has to be one of the biggest coincidences in my life.. out of nowhere my brother recommended this movie just 2 hours ago .. and as soon as I watched it, you uploaded it. What a great ending. That a guy who doesn't have a roof can still take on life so happily.
Keep doing the great work Joblo
Hughes was such a genius it's so sad he isn't still with us 😢 although I think his films are definitely of their time but still timeless
One of the best comedies ever made
Definitely somewhere in my top 5 comedy films of all time and a bona fide 80's classic. John Candy had significantly greater range as an actor than most ever gave him credit for, and this is one of the few flicks that really let him shine.
The ending gets me right in the feels
Steve Martin is a great strait man.
I lost a count how many times i rewatched this movie ^^ Its very very heart warming journey lol True classic that never gets old.
RIP John Candy 😔🍁
Another example of why the 80s was the greatest decade.
The 80s were America's pop culture peak: movies, TV and music. I'm so glad to be Gen X and to have been a teen in the 80s (turned 13 in '80).
John Hughes and John Candy died way too young. RIP.
I've watched this movie at least 25 times from start to finish every thanksgiving / Christmas season.
My favorite John Candy movie and in my top 10 all time favorites. And no to a remake
I’m agreeing with this score. I became farther this year, and I was a Steve Martin fan, but boy did I get it right when John Candy came in this movie. I still laugh as back then. Well I’m getting old, but I’m still a child 😊🎸🏏❤️
this is easy one of my all time top 10 movies, I can watch it over and over again. It has everything: It has some action, it has drama, lots of comedy (of the highest level), 2 amazing actors at the top of their game and even Kevin Bacon ... what more could you wish for?
This is a Masterpiece, I loved it! So funny but never over the top and a great lovely ending. I was in tears!
only John Hughes movie to make me cry,
One of my Favorite moves of the 80s.
Thanks for a look back at this great movie. "She's Having a Baby" is also one of my favorites... way underrated.
one of the greatest comedies of all time, I watch it at least once a year!
It’s honestly a tie between this and Uncle Buck for my favorite John Hughes movie. Definitely my favorite Steve Martin movie hands down. He plays a D so perfectly lol
My childhood.
very time i see the last 10 minutes a tear runs down my check, just beautiful.
One of my favourite all time comedies. That Steve Martin rant at the car rental counter is unforgettable.
saw this at the cinema when it was first released, loved it then, still do.
Second favourite behind breakfast club!
First see this in the cinema when I was 14. Seen it at least a dozen times since. They definitely dont make them like they used to. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Am from England so i dont celebrate thanksgiving so i watch this movie at Christmas instead, i absolutely love it
Some of the deleted scenes were finally recovered by the Hughes’ Estate and included on the 4K Blu-Ray DVD anniversary release last year. They’re fun/cool behind the scenes features but I definitely see why they were cut. It seemed like John Hughes told Martin & Candy to just improvise and do whatever they want, which make them drag on a bit.
The day after Thanksgiving, my dad and I would always go to the big city to get ready for Christmas. We would go out for lunch during the day, then see a movie. In 1987 when I was 10, we wanted to see Three Men and a Baby, but it was sold out. The only other family option was the re-release of Disney's Cinderella, and my dad wasn't into cartoons, and I didn't want to see a "girl's movie".
That's when my dad had an idea. He knew I had wanted to see Planes, Trains & Automobiles, but my mom had forbidden it, since it was R. I remember my dad saying, "I won't tell her if you won't". And thus, I got to see my first R-rated movie at a theater, and we both loved it. When I got home, I couldn't hide the fact that I had seen a great movie, and had to tell my two older brothers. Naturally, they immediately told mom that Dad had taken me to an R-rated movie. I didn't get in trouble, though, and I got to tell my friends on the playground at school on Monday about the movie.
The greatest F Bomb scene performed on film by Steve Martin. Only Martin could pull off a such a scene with such panache. He and the late John Candy make a fantastic odd pair.
Such a classic!!!
Hands down, one of the funniest movies ever made.
“You play with you balls a lot!”
“I do not..play with my balls..a lot..”
“You fidget with you nuts, a lot! Larry Byrd doesn’t do as much ball handling in one night, as you do in an hour! 🤣🤣🤣
One of my absolute faves!
Travolta would've made this a forgettable bomb! Martin & Candy had the perfect chemistry and performances and made the film a timeless classic.
Yeah Travolta would’ve been really awkward in either role, though I could see Hanks as Neil. Plus he and John Candy were hilarious together in Splash so maybe it could’ve worked🤷♂️
Remember when movies were good? Those days are gone.
6:33 I don't know why, but that line had me rolling!!
I always cried when Neil's backstory is getting revealed.
One of Steve Martin's most underrated films.
💯💯
Thank you for this wonderful review. It is unquestionably a masterpiece and very definitely one of the best comedies ever made. 10/10
Can you believe I’ve never seen this movie… I’ll have to watch it one of these days.
So much you can say about this legendary film but for me, the (predominantly synth-based) score is so unique and helps to define the whole tone of the film.
💯💯💯
My sides split when Steve Martin is trying to check in to a motel with the burnt-up credit cards.
Dutch with Ed O'Neil is also a great Thanksgiving movie. Also, written by Hughes.
My wife introduced me to Dutch. One of the only movies she introduced me to. Lol. It's not a great comedy, but it does have its moments.
I went to the “Page residents” location a few years back when I was working in Northern Chicago. The house looks exactly the same to this day. Also the yard for the most part aside from some new trees.
Brilliant synopsis, you have made me want to watch this again 👏🙏
Having Steve Martin and John Candy in a movie together is amazing!
This is another classic 80s film which has scene's that are hilarious and sad.
I would say yes, it is John Hughes best. It's the only one Ive probably seen 25x or more. I watch it just about every Thanksgiving.
My parents allowed me to watch this movie well before I was 8 years old, making it the first R-rated movie I ever saw. I don't even think they knew it was rated R.
If they were able to find over 20 minutes of deleted scenes for "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (which was integrated back into the film for the LaserDisc boxed set), then maybe they will find the missing 2 hour cut of this. The Mad World footage was missing for over 30 years. What they found was not the camera negatives, but positive prints, which is why that footage remains an LD exclusive (well, that restored cut was also released on VHS, but with the wrong aspect ratio).
Loved this movie "Why yes officer, this vehicle is completely safe to drive"
You ever notice how most of the great filmmakers have a core of actors that usually have roles in many of their films? Huges, Tarrintino, Copolla, Scorsese, Spielberg and Cameron and I'm sure there are a few more I'm not remembering right now.
I think that's perhaps part of why their films turn out so great. They have an eye for talent that they can get along with and that chemistry shows in the performances on the screen. And allot of thier recurring Actors also then not to be the high paid "Divas" that can ruin a movie with their egos and eccentricities.
Some of the crap I heard about Actors like Wil Smith requiring are just ludicrous and it shows in their performances nowadays. How any actor should be allowed script approval and their own writers for re-writes is beyond me.
I envy talented writers who can crank out a material in hours or days like John Hughes. How do you do that??
Classic. For me his best film is Uncle Buck
5:54 I had no idea Martin Ferraro who played the 2nd motel clerk was the lawyer who got eaten by the T-Rex in Jurassic Park.
The rental car counter. Is by far the best.
To hell with a reboot - release the entire original 3'ish hours uncut.
The Great Outdoors probably deserves its own WTF episode. I always assumed PTA and She’s Having A Baby were filmed back to back. Later in the film Robbins has a tv on in the background and she’s watching She’s Having A Baby!
Before I even watch this video; the answer is a firm, “YES!” This is his best movie and, possibly John Candy’s best role. Second only to “Uncle Buck.”
No film company should EVER bitch about Hughes home sets. They are fucking iconic. Yeah, they hardly resemble what a real American home looks like but that ideal American home he creates in every movie he has one is fantastic. If he had a signature to his directing style it's these homes that star in his movies. EVERYONE wants to live in that house no matter the batshit crazy antics that happen there.
Every single one is a home I would want to come back to, never leave or defend from crooks. 😅😅
I lent this to a guy who never seen it. He loved it and bought the those aren't pillows special addition
As we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, this is a Christmas movie to me.
Depending on the channel and time of day, you an see the plane part where the lady's hair covers his brownie. I've seen that on TV before.
I didn't give this movie a chance when it was released. I was like, "what kinda name is Planes, Trains and Automobiles?" Then I watched it. I was being a jackass. I love Martin and Candy. Great movie!!! Still not as good as Spaceballs though.
Great movie...
You need to do an episode of John Hughes Revisited on "Dutch."
Rip ❤
Great flick
Classic comedy 3rd for me behind Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller day off
All these years I'd of bet a beer that Andie Mac Dowell played Neil's wife. LOL.
i got the THOSE AREN'T PILLOWS EDITION
Best Thanksgiving movie
Honestly even tho Due Date made me laugh more it’s not a movie I revisit or cherish as I do Planes Trains & Automobiles.
The McCallister house!
6:16 That's John. Ferris' dad is Tom
Funny movie! 🤣🤣🤣
Bill Erwin was in weird science too
Stand by me,they live and plane trains are normally my 3 fav films Wizard of Oz not they live sometimes.
I watched pta last week for 99th time first time in around a decade. Have to say I love love love this movie almost more and more I watched it for first time when 11 all them years ago and my friend and I when the swear scene come on I don't think I've laughed so hard at a movie since we were 11. Truly is one of the very best movies if you somehow ain't seen it watch it tonight.
Now I wants to watch. Is it on any U.S. streaming service right now?
It's on Paramount Plus.
they didnt use paul youngs version in the film
Best John Hughes Movie in my personal opinion, would be BREAKFAST CLUB.
Totally related to the target audience!
was that hank williams jr sitting in the back of the bus at 11:28??
On behalf of all of Kansas; I'd like to apologize to John Hughes and every holiday traveler since! LOL! (and yeah, I miss Candy too.) =)
Because I have had encounters with people like John Candy's character, I actually find this movie to be less funny the older I get because it reminds me of those times, no longer simply preposterous notions that could only happen in a movie.
😉😁 Those Aren't Pillows!! 👌👍🍁♈
There was that story about a remake of this film with Will Smith and Kevin Hart. No thank you. I don’t see why a lot of good movies need to be remade. There’s a saying after all, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it”
💯💯💯💯
It would’ve sucked
I've never liked that film...I think it's ready to try again...thanks for a great vid! 👍
I dk why but I have never seen this
John Candy was in the Blues Brother's?
@@matthewdaley746 huh. I never noticed...
Cohn Jandy
Literally nobody wants or needs a remake of planes trains and automobiles. Zero demand.
