I love when you walk past the rare, still standing, old house. Single family homes are not common on those streets anymore!! The stories those houses could tell would be so interesting. ❤
That was a fun walk! 👍🏼I really enjoy them because you show and tell us things and sometimes I have questions or wonder "what's in that building?", "where does that street go?", "what's going on there?", "what's that thing?" You can imagine what I was like as a child. 🤣🍭 Mahalo Luke! 🤙🏼
Back in the 1960s and 1970s, those hidden back streets around Cleghorn and Tusitala St. where the empty lots are. was known as the Waikiki Jungle. It was mostly old small residential homes and small 2 story walk ups. If you mention back in the day that you lived in the "Jungle", everyone knew the exact area. I remember it well.
I remember it well to. Had friends who lived in The Jungle. I lived down on Lau'ula off Lewers at Manny's place and worked in Int. Mkplc. when I first moved to Honolulu in '75.
@@ranradd the "70s in Hawaii were the best! Lots of local owned businesses, locals still lived in Waikiki, tourists were interested in Hawaiian culture. The old international market place was truly interesting and not overly commercialized as it is today.
@@skyt4133 For sure! You could buy a all kinds of local food in the food court at Int Mkplc. really cheap, like 25 cent cone sushi, manapua, etc.. Kalakaua Ave closed on July 4th with locals and tourists dancing in the street, throwing fireworks everywhere (admittedly a bit dangerous, but fun). Yea, good times for sure.
Tusitala St. in Waikiki is named for the Scottish author, Robert Louis Stevenson, friend of King Kalakaua and Princess Ka'iulani. "Tusitala" was his Samoan name when he lived in Samoa with his family. The name means "Storyteller" or "Teller of Tales."
