People in Thailand told me for so long to never go to Cambodia so I didn't. I eventually went on my own 6 years ago and now it's the place where I spend most of my time when travelling SE Asia. I love it so much that I'm moving there this year! Cambodia is a truly special place as well as being ranked as one of the top friendliest countries in the world.

I'm moving to Cambodia for the first time at the end of the year as well. Thailand treats tourists good with their 30 day free visa on arrival, but they do not like people staying long term. Cambodia is just the opposite. They charge tourists $35 for a visa, but let you get a 1 year visa for only $180 and no stressful 90 day immigration checkins and minimum bank balances.

@@MyLifeThai371 it's very true. As Thailand has gotten richer, they have began to push out the longterm foreigners or at least make staying extremely difficult. Cambodia has been clever and waits with open arms saying come here instead. Let's hope Cambodia doesn't change as they become wealthier.

Loving the videos! As a Cambodian myself I am delighted that my country is being shown and spread to other parts of the world. However there are some things in the video that I have to correct. The hotel in the video wasn’t actually abandoned during the war, it was a resort built more than 10 years ago and some parts of it are still being used to accommodate guests but most of it is unfortunately abandoned due to the lack of guests. Finally, the statue on the mountain wasn’t Buddha, we call her “Lok Yey Mao” or Grandma Mao, she is known to be the guardian of the coastal cities. Hope to see what you have in store for your next adventures!

I agree with you that Cambodia was my favorite out of Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. Each country had its own charm but Cambodia really does have a different feel and after learning about the history it's quite amazing how that country has continued to persevere. The great beer prices help, as well as the amazing Angkor What. I want to go back so badly. Hope you made it to Koh Rong as well! Right off of Kampot.

Kampot isn’t the only beach/costal city in Cambodia. There’s also Koh Kong which is a city next to Thailand border and Sihanoukville, the more modern beach city with high rises and white sand beach (about 100km away from Kampot). There are also many islands in the area that you could explore, like Rabbit Island, Koh Rong, Koh Rong Sanloeum, Bamboo Island, and many more. Phu Quoc island or Koh Trol used to belong to Cambodia that’s why it’s closer to mainland Cambodia than it is to mainland Vietnam. It is the most controversial dispute between the two countries over decades. Thank you for your videos and for coming to our country. ❤

Paddy, you nailed it. I travelled to Cambodia in 2002 as part of a 10 month trip and spent 10 days in this beautiful country. I travelled overland from Bangkok to Siem Reap, which was horribly uncomfortable, and then a boat from Siem Reap to Battambang and then back to Bangkok. The thing that really stuck with me was the beauty of the Cambodian people. I was told that Thailand was the Land of Smiles, and in many ways it was, but Cambodia is where I truly felt that the people were genuinely happy that I was there. Travelling through the countryside, with the kids running to the side of the road to wave hello, and everyone else just nicer than you can imagine, the country was pure magic. I am glad to hear that it's apparently still the same

I just feel that connection. I believe, and this is just hear say, that the statue of the lady in Kep was built in honor of her husband who was a fisherman, and went out fishing one day and never returned, and this is her sitting on the rocks waiting for her husband to return. I think the negativity about Cambodia may centre around Snook and what it has become. I’ve not been out to the islands either for six years or so but they were amazing. Cambodia is its own clique. And I think your observation about the people and what they’ve been through is spot on. The energy of a place comes from its people and as we swapped notes on before Cambodia is far less tourist fatigued from my perspective. These shoots and edits have a really nice chilled out feel. From the initial impressions vid with Cowboy it’s been a real pleasure catching this series. Cheers man. 🍻✌️

Cambodia…oh my heart! I have loved every moment of both trips - except for the transit through Sihanoukville to get to Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem. Which btw I highly highly rate!
Those islands are national parks and have not been infected by the scourge of Sihanoukville.
In fact I’d rate them above most Thai islands. They’re naturally stunning but set into a national park so no big developments. Samoleon doesn’t even have roads. Just beach huts set on the white sand. Some are luxe most are budget friendly. On 4K beach on Koh Rong you can sleep in tents.
A trip that I’m told is reminiscent of visiting the Thai islands in the 70-80s. I absolutely loved it.

The crab market there was great and I remember having one of my favourite ever meals there (although, in general the food wasn’t as spectacular as Thailand, the Kampot pepper sauce is delicious). We also visited Koh Tonsay, a tiny island off the Kep coast for a day and ended up staying for a week. Fantastic people and the ‘rough around the edges’ aspect actually added to its charm for me. And Kep, it's sad that you missed the Kep national park. It's so beautiful, there's an observation tower, and the view is breathtaking, plus there is a good cafe on the mountain overlooking the coast. The view is amazing you could sit there for hours and it's affordable too.

@@heythave hi, there are 2 side of the river. I stayed at Eden eco village when I was there the first time, it's not some high end resort, it's mostly for backpackers. On that side of the river, you can see beautiful mountain, quiet surrounding with just birds chipping, and you get to see the sun set from there. But if you're staying on the other side of the river which I did at Kampot riverfront boutique, you get to see sunrise however I'd totally recommend you to go to a cafe on the hill call "veha" around 3pm to enjoy the view of a wetland and coffee, plus the sunset is amazing there. The cafe was in a small cottage it was so cute. The entry fee was $1.25, but you can use it to as voucher to buy coffee, you just need to add maybe a dollar more. There is accommodation up there too, you can see both sun rise and sunset there. Anyway, both accomodations I mentioned offer free kayak. But you can search on Google map along that river and check out their accomodations on Agoda. The eden eco village one, was about 16$ when I stay there, kampot river front was about $40, it's more premium and it has AC.

    Hey Paddy. Love your videos.
I guess I'll drop an interesting story related to the statue of the woman there at the shore.
The name of the statue is "Sela Jam Pdey" which translates to "The Stone that awaits her husband's return". Since Sela is also a unisex name, it can also translate to "Sala awaits her husband's return".
The statue was built as a remembrance for Lost of Koh Trol or Phu Quoc which is what it is known for internationally now.
There are so many version of the stories, but I'll tell this one and it is going to sound biased. But I'll stand tall.
During the french colony of Indochina, the island is used to imprisoned people. As times passes and in short, since Cambodia had never set foot on that island along with the Vietnamese populations grew, that island was lost.
That's why you can see Phu Quoc is so much closer to Cambodia than it is the South Vietnam, or (Lower-Cambodia, but that's another story).
I heard you mentioned that island in the video, then moved to that status as well as mentioning that you don't know the story of the statue, I thought I took the time to write this.
Hope you love Cambodia and again love you videos!! Thank you 🙏

The country of Cambodia are still in a state of developing. The Majority of the citizens don’t really care about other things. They just want to live happily, they had enough of wars. So that why the countryside are more chill than the town like Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, shihanouk vill.

That huge statue is not Buddha. Actually, it is a statue of “ Lok Yey Mao “ ( Grandmother Mao ) who was believed to be a Cambodian sea coast protector. I’ve seen many RUclipsrs mistakenly state it to be a Buddha figure.

Your perspective is refreshing. There are a lot of issues in Cambodia and you can’t compare it to its neighbors. But you have to live in its time and experience it today….I find Cambodia today like Bangkok of my youth in the 60’s, and it will be different to future travelers. However, all travelers should leave their expectations and biases behind to open their positive minds to what they may encounter. As you said, high maintenance tourists will find it challenging in Cambodia….but to those who try to keep an open mind, its such a beautiful experience

We have been to Kep in 2018. Unfortunately the whole time we were there, there was a storm going on (3 days). That certainly gave us the chance to enjoy the beautiful little restaurants at the beach completely to ourselves (was very chill due to wind) and my wife to collapse due to hyperthermia and dehydration after our Ntl. Park tour. We did have the most charming Hotelowners, who cheered us up and I would really love to go back to see it in another light. But boy, after a rainy day there I almost froze as much as in Kiruna watching the polar light ^^
PS: Don't get me wrong, I know we just had bad luck, so I will someday come back and experience the Kep I was hoping for ;)

It's special also bcos when I was there I felt a lot of hope with the younger generations... After the terrible massacre in the 70s, nobody can imagine that happening again... The pain can be felt through the narratives passed on from the older generations and these are really important lesson not only for Cambodians, but all of us... Too many unnecessary deaths in the world... And for what.

Cambodia has only a little coast line compared with Thailand and Vietnam which sandwich the country. Development has never really taken off. Tourism is only focused on Angkor wat. Its a shame. A lovely country with very friendly people. Before the Americans got their air bases in Thailand, what was that like? Paddy is doing it justice by seeing the place as it is.

Only recently discovered Cambodia for the gem it really is ! -- Been watching everything I can find. -- Love Siem Reap as a retirement destination for the food the low cost of living the super friendly people the expats & English is enough. No winters is a bonus for my old body. The retirement visa for over 55 is amazing ! No 'requirements' and you never have to leave for visa runs and that nonsense. Simply pay $180 for the year and your done !!! -- I love the simplicity no others I have seen has. -?- Remarkably beautiful city to enjoy and it has most everything needed. Bangkok is a cheap one hour flight away for fun or quality medical care. -- I'm excited to go there for the rest of my days.
