  • Planting buckwheat for pollinators. The key in planting for honeybees or other pollinators is to try and fill in the gaps in major nectar flows...to give them something to eat when nothing else is available.

    As usual you are informative inspiring and make the family and I very jealous being surrounded by some beautiful landscapes.
    Could I make one little observation about your videography. Your filming is great but you need to add a little more diversity in you shots. While the music it fitting, if you are going to use the same soundtrack try mixing up some of your tighter shots with other movements. I love the label overlays you add when identifying species of insects.
    If your fast growing knowledge base of beekeeping is anything to go by, I’m so excited to see where your new love of filmmaking will take us.

      Thanks Wayne, I’m enjoying learning video and editing, it’s all new to me. I couldn’t have made this video a couple months ago, so hopefully I’ll keep learning. Thanks for the tips. You guys will be coming up on spring before too long right? Hmmmm…do you get spring, or is it more a dry and wet season? Regardless you should be past the solstice with lengthening days so your bees should perk up.

      @@DuckRiverHoney evening Nath, yes mate we are coming into spring in a couple of weeks and I’m feeding my hives to promote early growth as it’s 26 degrees in the day or as you say 79deg Fahrenheit tops days and dry. There is not much food around at the moment so this should perk them up coming into spring.
      The girls are definitely out of the hive a lot more. The hive relocation went well moving less then a foot a day. They have settled and working on brining pollen in but not much nectar hence the feeding.
      I managed to save a Queensland native stingless bee hive in a house post from a house demolition which I have given to my youngest son. He’s loving having a hive of his own he doesn’t need to wear a suit for.
      Swarm traps are out and prepped ready so fingers crossed.
      I think you have a great eye for landscapes and I am looking forward in seeing many more.
      Shout out for your brother in bees in Queensland……Gods country. May your family be safe and well.Wayne.

      Thanks Craig! Good thing about crimson is that it volunteers pretty well. Plant in fall and you should have it for several springs. It competes with the tulip poplar bloom here, so bees don’t use it as much as some other plantings.

    Cool idea with the buckwheat. We grow a ton of milkweed for the butterflies here in Davidson NC and try to help nature when we can. We want to do what your doing next spring in Asheville. I want to build up to 500 hives and grow organics and hemp. I'm looking at getting a kubota backhoe on craigs list next March for the farm. Why didn't you turn the soil with a blade? Keep up the good work and it looks like you need help with your website. I can help if your interested. I can set it up so you can make changes.

    • @DuckRiverHoney
      @DuckRiverHoney  3 года назад

      I try not to use a turning plow unless I need to. The chisel plow would’ve gotten hung in the ground cover, and I figured I could get a good enough seed bed just with the disk. These plots get worked every year…if it was “new ground” I would’ve broken it (best to do in the fall). I built the website with Wordpress using the Divi theme. It’s a work in progress, when I have time.

    I wonder how big of an area of buckwheat it would take for the bees to fill supers. I have read where buckwheat honey has some reportedly outstanding health benefits. Kind of strong smell and taste but good for you.

    • @DuckRiverHoney
      @DuckRiverHoney  3 года назад

      I had some mixed into fall honey last year, it was a strong honey, but delicious. Everyone who tried it preferred it even to clover honey. Not sure on the acreage needed, though I checked today and I have some supers that have been completely drawn out and partially filled on this buckwheat flow.

    • @woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc
      @woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc 3 года назад

      @@DuckRiverHoney That's great you have capped supers of buckwheat honey. Also fyi I have a couple of food plots with Imperial Whitetail Clover and my bees have never stopped working on it since the start in the spring on the first blooms. I didn't want to but had to mow it to stop weeds and get the fall growth. The bees only missed about a week and now new blooms are popping out already and the bees are hammering them again.

    • @DuckRiverHoney
      @DuckRiverHoney  3 года назад

      That’s fun stuff, we are too far south for the best white clover flow, it prefers the limestone soils and colder winters of Kentucky north and west to Iowa.

    • @woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc
      @woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc 3 года назад

      @@DuckRiverHoney Yeah we are about 2 hours east of Iowa in the center of Illinois. That Imperial Whitetail Clover was developed and breed from white clover that grows on south Pacific islands. It will get about knee high and millions of big blooms if it gets enough rain. I lime it too , that don't hurt.

    Enjoy your videos and especially planting for bees. 2nd year Ohio beek here. (18 colony’s looking to expand) What I noticed that my frame building and nectar flow really slowed down mid June. Basically Clover and Sumac after that. I have currently close to 20 acres that my neighbor plants in corn and has for years. (110 acre property mostly wooded) Planning to recall this and planting 10 ac Huban Sweet White Clover plus a bit of Buckwheat. Timing it to produce after June. Will plant some Soybeans and Corn for deer😊 Was thinking of CRP Pollinators Program but felt I might be limited in what I can plant. My question is will this make a big difference in nectar flow from June through August? I did pull off 6 gallons honey from my biggest hive (plus 2 nucs from this hive)and most of that was produced before June 1st. Thinking through my Options! Thank You in advance!! PS Where did you speak in Ohio. My farm is in Coshocton Co.

      Hi Tim, the buckwheat I think helps prevent grumpy bees trying to rob each other by giving them something to do. I’m not planting those plots to make honey. I’ve also got some sweet clover planted that should bloom well next summer…may want to look into it. I did a presentation for the Green County Beekeepers Club via Zoom. It was a good opportunity.
