I'm a bit older than most of the subscribers here. I was a high school and college intern for Bud Hobgood (James Brown's producer engineer). Bud would record James on either a Shure SM58 or a Sennheiser MD421 because James would scream and destroy diaphragms in condenser mics. Some of the greatest sounding vocals were done on relatively inexpensive microphones. The greatest selling album in history by a solo artist,"Thriller" by Michael Jackson, had vocals recorded on a $400 Shure SM7B, engineered by the late, great, Bruce Swedien. Swedien produced the same magic with a Shure SM7B on George Benson's "Give Me The Night". The late, great, Al Schmitt recorded Benson's "This Masquerade" on a $300 Electro Voice EV666. Isaac Hayes' Oscar winning "Theme From Shaft" vocal was recorded on an AKG C451. Lastly one of the greatest R&B singers of the 20th Century,Luther Vandross recorded all of his hits from 1971 to 1995 on an AKG C414. My favorite inexpensive mic is an MXL Revelation II,a $500 tube U47 clone. It's not about what you wish you had,but what you do with what you have.

I built a lot of my mic locker in the 80's going to garage sales. I was a teen and had zero money and a 4 track. To this day some of my best mics are things I bought by the box for $3. I still dont have a 57, the akgs and EV's I got back then are still better and have their own thing. Bowie, Elvis and Karen Carpenter loved the Re10 and used them on classic live and even studio recordings. I agree, listen with your ears and you can get affordable alternatives.

I've always been impressed by how good everything from Audio-Technica has been for the prices, going back decades now. I have a AT-2020 that cost, what was it, $80, $90, and it's pretty darned good. Now, if you offer me a trade for a U47 or something that will be done in a flash, but as a large diaphragm condenser for less than a hundred bucks, it's pretty stellar. There are better microphones, but in terms of sound for price, you can't beat it, and it seems like all the A-T stuff is that way, and, as I said, has been for a long time. Big cheers for those guys.
PS- While we're at it, their headphones are pretty good, too.

I decided to test out about 20 of the various mics from my collection yesterday on electric guitar just as a refresher about how they sound, so this video is timely. The thing that struck me is how basically every mic sounded good in its own way and so much of it depends on placement, or the other mics you decide to use on the other instruments. One mic can sound so different depending on where you place it.
I have 3 or 4 TEV mics from the 80s or 90s (no idea how old, honestly) that i got for about $20 each about ten years ago-- and they sound just as good as some of the high end Sennheisers, CAD, akgs, Shure and Audix mics I have. The cheapie Calrad and Astatic mics also sounded surpringly good.
I tend to think of it this way: this dark mic will sound good on this bright source or vice versa. Or this mic can handle this really loud source or this super sensitive mic will sound good on this soft source. This mic wont pick up bleed, or if it does it will still sound good.

I started on a TEAC 3340S (most of Blue Oyster Cult's rehearsals were recorded on that machine} But the mics were all 57's and 58's. Unfortunately, the 57 is NOT a great
kick drum mic!. Oh, still have the same 3340S and it still works! And remember, the Sennheiser 421 has a "voice/music" switch hidden around the XLR output.

  • @L.Scott_Music

I'd recommend the same thing, a SM57 for the first mic. But I'd say the AT2020 (and if you can spend a few bucks more an AT2035 that gives you a pad and a high pass on the 2020 base model). These are both keeper mics even if you may mostly move beyond the AT it still worth keeping in the collection and will get you through discovering the business of recording.
My mindset here is if someone is asking about their first mic then what they are really doing is exploring getting into recording. As such that defines suggesting a mic that doesn't waste money if recording turns out to not be their thing. If they grow then the money still isn't wasted because they are long term keeps in a greater collection. An experienced Recording engineer wouldn't be asking but if they did then I suggest something $1k or more of course. Although, I totally dig the new Aspen Pitman Designs AP1B-FET. It's really good. (Yes, APD are my friends, but this mic IS actually really good. I recently record guitar with one where I had the free choice from a mic locker including $5k to $18k mics.)

The Shure SM545 were the mics my Dad and Uncle George (Jorge) gigged with in the '60s. Dad gave them to my twin brother (drummer) and me for us to gig with. I thought they were crap because of their vintage cable ends, but in reality, they were pretty much SM57s in old man's clothing I read in one tech article. They were bloody fine! My brother still uses them in his basement rehearsal studio. In fact, I remember my old school district had an auction getting rid of old bits in the mid-'80s. Guess what they were pitching out? Old Shure mics from their old podiums. I scored 4 mics for $30, soldered on XLR ends, and filled out our mic locker for more instrument mics for my brother's drum kit. I thought there were just basic crap, but that article also confirmed that they too were basically SM57s. Not so bad...

I want to put a word in for Schoeps and DPA SDC mics. They operate on a different level than other mics in my experience. They are not colored but can capture a visceral sense of place along with perfect accuracy. And I mean perfect accuracy. When you listen to playback it sounds exactly like you are standing next to the musician. Put a stereo pair in front of a band that plays well together and hard pan them in playback. You can walk around in that depth of field. Nothing like it. I guess they are mostly used for classical recording. The classical guys have a very different way of approaching recording but they showed me something. Almost nothing is done in post. In that world the mics need to be at that level of quality. A Jolymod Oktava is great (I've owned a couple of pairs and loved them) but A/B them with a Schoeps and its bye bye bank account.

Sometimes mics gain (pun not intended) followers by association with classic recordings when they may well have just been what was to hand. I'm sure in the right hands it's entirely possible to make a killer record with the crappiest of capsules!

In their mailing add it last week said:
'Although this probably violates a rule about the sorts of microphones that small companies are allowed to make, it's not a clone.
I know, I know, the only mics anybody wants are the U47, U87, U67, ElaM 251, and C12. Alas. I'm just not that excited about slavishly duplicating someone else's work.
Instead, I used the same method I always do: start with an idea of the sound I want, borrow from vintage circuit designs, add useful features, develop an appropriate capsule voicing, then implement the mic using the best parts on the planet.
Sonically, the Aztec is reminiscent of the ElaM 251. We have developed a spectacular capsule (edge-terminated, of course) and transformer. We use a similar single-triode circuit topology, and a 6072 tube. We spent two years refining the power supply.'
So it's not a clone but reminiscent...
People will buy it as a 251😎.

I just stumbled upon the md411 by Sennheiser. Its called "poor mans 421" , but is as good as its brother. Its got a smaller capsule but the rest is the same components. Nowadays a 421 costs 400€ and up. Oldee ones from the 70s even more.
MD411? Can pick em up for 20€ to 60€. All you need is anadapter from this small-tuchel thing to xlr and you are good to go. Often theyre branded as Telefunken cos they were sold with tape recorders as a bundle.

My two cents - buying a u87 was the best thing that ever happened to my vocals. Not just in terms of sound, but in terms of everything: discipline, vocal technique, confidence, etc. A u87 is the world's best vocal coach. It will make you think about everything - from breath control to room acoustics. It makes you, and I apologize for this modern term, GIT GUD. There's no other mic that does that (except other more expensive mics from the same family). I 100% will agree that partially it is a placebo effect of the history of that mic capsule (although the comparison to luxury cars in the above video is pure idiocy) and the Neumann brand, i.e. a largely ephemeral thing. But isn't music the most ephemeral art form? Standing in front of a u87 is a holy experience for me. You make yourself give it all you can, there's just no other way. That is why you buy a mic of that caliber, to feel these feelings and have the urge to deliver (can't get that kidney back now). This is music guys, not freaking house renovation, you CANNOT let yourself get too clinical (and cynical) about this if you truly love the art form.
