The Kinks were incredible. Their string of hits went from the mid 60's up to the mid 80's. They were the 3rd longest lasting group (without breakups) to come out of the British Invasion.

One of my FAVORITE Kinks songs!!!! Great to sing out loud in the car with the windows down!!! And yes, it would be on the radio. :)

Nicky Hopkins on piano, a honky tonk style. He played with plenty of British bands including The Rolling Stones. This was a monster hit back in 1966.

Wow, Ace! Love your analogy about the intense connection with music back then feeling "like water, something that we need to survive." ❤

"I'm Not Like Everybody Else" released back in 1966 by "The Kinks" is worth checking out. 🔍Their live version of the song recorded years later is smokin' hot and has a heavy vibe but a smooth flow as well. 'The Kinks' were included among the many British bands and artists that invaded and flooded America with their chart-topping hits during the 1960's.🎤🎸🥁🔊⚡🔥🎧☮

To me, the piano style you are talking about is reminiscent of honky-tonk and Tin Pan Alley, typically on an old upright piano, and that style has roots going back into the late 1800s at least. Not all of it, but much of the song to me invokes the feeling of music and particularly singing from the Roaring Twenties, the 1920s. Picture a young Rudy Vallee singing through that sound amplifying cone, which apparently the girls went crazy over, and they would fight for a position to look down the cone at him on the stage and see his lips. My grandma told me about that, lol.
It was typically played on a 78 RPM record on a Victrola record player with the horn on it to amplify the sound, and its a really narrow frequency range and really scratchy. You can see them in a lot of old movies.
In this case, I thought I heard a slight use of filtering on the vocals to hint at that, which, for example, The Beatles did a lot of. And then I absolutely love the reverb in the choruses. I really like the harmony arrangements, I love the stand-up bass line, and the piano and the drums, and the whole feel of it is just great.❤

Being Christmas time and you just did Kinks reaction, if you haven't heard it yet, try The Kinks, Father Christmas.

Singer/songwriter Ray Davies satirizing the high tax rate in England at the time. The Beatles complained about it as well in "Taxman".

Another great Kinks song is Celluloid Heroes. The song names several famous actors of 20th century film, and also mentions Los Angeles's Hollywood Boulevard, alluding to its Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Such a great summertime song. His writing was as clever and natural as anything Dylan was doing.

Great pick. Another great pick from them would be "I'm So Tired of Waiting For you" You'd be a step ahead of everyone else if you played it.

He’s complaining about being taxed and life’s tribulations of being a Rock Star, but hey he’s a Rockstar so he’s lazing on a sunny afternoon. 😂😂😂 The Kinks were always unique and usually very witty

Cool! The Kinks wrote the cheekiest of cheeky songs, so don't jump to conclusions based on the first verse alone. Heh. Drunkenness and cruelty. Nicky Hopkins supplies the piano and melodica. That style of piano playing is almost ragtime but closer to Fats Waller than Jelly Roll Morton.
