Breakfast in America is a tongue in cheek humorous take by the BRITISH band Supertramp at touring in America and discovering the "American Dream" etc. They reference the girls in California (a reference to the famous Beach Boys "California Girls" song) and that "everybody in Texas is a millionaire". The cover is a painting of a waitress holding up a breakfast ala The Statue of Liberty. Supertramp was always a humorous satirical type of band that was very clever with 2 great writers and singers.
I saw Roger Hodgson play to a nearly empty outdoor festival in Grand Beach Manitoba on July 30th, 2004. The other band mates and equipment didn't show up due to travel issues. He had to borrow the keyboard from The Doors of the 21st century. He wasn't even announced as he was a last-minute replacement for the Beach Boys if my memory serves me right. So unannounced, without his accompaniment, playing on a borrowed keyboard to a nearly empty venue, he gave one of the best performances I've ever heard, and I became a supertramp fan from that moment on. True musician.
PLEASE TELL PETER THAT THIS 51 YEAR OLD MAN FROM ANADARKO OKLAHOMA KNEW EVERY LYRIC TO EVERY SONG AS A 7 YEAR OLD IN 1980!!!!!!! THIS ALBUM AND BAT OUT OF HELL WERE PLAYED REPEATEDLY THAT SUMMER!!!!!!! THANKS!
This is the soundtrack of my youth! Supertramp are an English band and many of the references in the song are to English things. The jumbo is a jumbo jet and kippers are smoked fish that are a traditional English breakfast. The song is so full of excitement about coming to America - it is joyous. The Logical Song is also worth a listen - it is genius.
This Album was put on my ears via headphones by my Uncle back in 79 when I was a 4 Yr old, instant love ❤️ for this group that is still as strong today, in my top 5 bands ever. Thank you uncle Stephen.😊
lol and I’ll thank Uncle John, the youngest of my grandparents six kids who was still at home when I was a teenager. I remember going to visit for summers and this being the only “normal” album in the house (they were extremely religious lol)…lost count of how many times I played it!😊
I took a Jumbo to LA in 1981 and stayed seven years.72 now and have listened to this album that takes me right back for years and even though I get old it never does. The devastation there is tragic.
"Kippers for breakfast" always cracked me up. Dried/smoked fish. We used to live in the UK and my dad used to fry them up in a pan for breakfast and they stunk so much they'd drive me from the house.
You didn’t look too closely at the album artwork, but it’s genius. It’s a view from a plane (taking a jumbo [jet] across the water) heading to New York. with the waitress as the Statue of Liberty holding an orange juice torch and the city skyscrapers comprised of stacked dishes.
Back in the day , if I found a really good sounding stereo , the first two bands I wanted to hear was Supertramp or Electric Light Orchestra . They had the cleanest sound.
One of my favorite all time albums. You can hear any song off this album on the radio. Love every song on it. My favorite is Child of Vision is great piano.
As soon as I saw the album cover over your shoulder I knew I’d love your reaction. I received it as a gift from a good friend late 70’s when I was about to leave Toronto after a long stay and return to the Uk. It remains in my album collection and still gets played today. Treat yourself and check out the rest of the songs…. All brilliant!
The reason I love this channel, like a few otherS (jamal aka jamel), is because I love seeing people hear the classics that I grew up with. I can't hear the song for the first time again, but I can live vicariously through them.
"Breakfast in America" refers to the title of an album by the English rock band Supertramp, which is interpreted as a commentary on the American lifestyle and the dream of achieving success in the United States, particularly through the eyes of someone from outside the country, often seen as a somewhat idealized and superficial view of American life; the phrase itself suggests a desire to experience the quintessential American lifestyle, even down to a typical breakfast meal.
Love supertramp , no matter the subject line of the their songs, the music is upbeat and catchy. Too many great songs to list. Good luck on this rabbit hole.
They are all masters! Just mind blowing in concert.you are seeing it live. The musicians on stage Tryin to keep track of who's playin what. John Helliwell Sax, back up vocals. The man runs around the stage a whistle here a couple claps here . The knock out Sax solo's backup piano. You can have a grand piano and two keyboards on stage. Roger Hodgson lead vocals. An Amazing pianist! The catalog is mind blowing. You were born in 80's the shirt was everywhere! Omg Even in the Quietest moments great next one. Cheers
A superb album. Covers are fair game, because they openly credit and pay for the content. Rock stole little things here and there, which would otherwise have disappeared into total obscurity, and then blew them up into gigantic hits, which gave new life sometimes to the original forgotten artists. While rap just rampantly steals killer hooks from past gigantic hits, for an audience which never ventures out of the rap zone, and so is clueless to the rap scam they keep paying for.
I will always be in love with Roger Hodgson. Still have their first two albums on vinyl.. I mean the FIRST ones. Thank you to my older brothers, OGWT, John Peel, etc etc...
With Supertramp, aside from their obscurer first two albums, most of their albums were written and sung by Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies. After the album Famous Last Words, Roger left and moved to America, and had a solo career. Supertramp had a few albums after that, but have mostly disbanded. Roger wrote a fair number of their hits (including "Breakfast in America"). "The Logical Song" and "Give a Little Bit" are two other big songs of Roger's that I know were covered by other bands. "Crime of the Century" was probably their best album, but they had a several good ones...
"Cupid's Chokehold" by Gym Class Heroesrelies heavily on the music and chorus from Supertramp's hit song "Breakfast in America" and the producer gave credit for this. The songwriters of Cupid's Chokehold are Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies of Supertramp and Travis McCoy. So it is a fair cover/interpolation of Supertramp's song from the 1979. What I find remarkable is that even then a pop song with clarinet, trombone and tuba was a rarity. BTW kipper is a smoked fish (hering).
A kipper (kippered herring) is a whole herring which is a small, oily fish, that has been split in a butterfly fashion from tail to head along the dorsal ridge, gutted, salted or pickled. The people of the UK, which is where Rodger and the band are from, eat kippers for dinner with their tea. But the lyrics say he wants it for Breakfast, to go along with the title of the song.. LOL
I’ve got this CD in my work car and rotate it with other greats from that era when I’m road tripping to remote mine sites in outback Australia. Great review BP… 🎉 Supertramp are British and Kippers are a fish (Herring) and a common breakfast meal in UK.. hence the reference to Breakfast In America..
Enjoyed your reaction to this track. Other tracks from Supertramp that I love Fools Overture, Casual Conversations and Even in the quietest Moments. Always sound great to my ears!
The thing with our music is it was fun to sing along and dance to with our friends or even just in our rooms if the song came on our cruddy little radios with the flip numbers. We knew every radio station and could get to them in record speed! They might have been simple times - but I'm glad i was there. Today's time really stinks for kids.
As for covers - the best ones were done in the 80s. Mony mony, crimson and clover, hazy shade of winter (I think is a remake), I think we're alone now, etc,,, I honestly don't care for disturbeds remake of the sounds of silence. It's ok - but will never be on my top 20.
A "jumbo" is/was a large jet; kippers are smoked fish and was a common English dish. The song is a about an English person visiting America. Breakfast in America is a concept album; "concept albums" had a theme or idea that was followed through out the entire album. A good example of a concept album is Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd; Tommy by the Who, and Diamond Dogs by David Bowie. The European Cabaret scene is represented with the clarinet sound on the recording.
Hi Black Pegasus! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. My Dad and my older brother had Supertramp albums, so I grew up with them, and I've known from a young age that they are a class act. Having seen the others you have reacted to already, I would suggest 'Dreamer', 'Bloody Well Right', and 'Give A Little Bit' for your next reactions of their songs. Æ 🙏
Goodbye Stranger please! This album was released the same year I travelled to the USA for the first time at the impressionable age of 17/18. Oh the memories ❤
A kipper is a smoked herring. It's traditional in the UK, often eaten for breakfast. You see them being smoked in what look like garden sheds in seaside towns.
SuperTramp and Cheap Trick don't get played nearly enough imo. Both were awesome groups. Music from my childhood. 😊 You've now heard 2 of Supertramp's great tracks, BP. They're quite unique in their style. Try Take the Long Way Home or Dreamer for more to add to your playlist.😉
In most cases, one difference in covering a song versus sampling a song is, you give credit to the original performers when you cover their song and take credit for the song when sampling. I don’t mean that in a negative way, but that’s just how I see it.
I totally LOVE this entire album! I got hooked on Supertramp when I heard the first song they released here in the States. And since you've put Supertramp in my head this fine Sunday morning I'm going to go listen to this album right now!
Kippers a a Herring fish which has been butterflied, and then smoked. Once smoked you can then cook them. His girlfriend I’ve always taken it to refer to the Statue of Liberty.
Supertramp to me is one of the most underrated bands EVER....British or not! And I'm being very bias when I say this but they were AWESOME! Gotta love those British bands especially with their crazy lyrics. HAHA! =) Great channel and SUBSCRIBER!
You haven't reacted to a group from the 1990s yet called M people,, there hits are Moving on up,, one night in heaven, search for the hero,, open your heart,, sight for sore eyes, you will love the main female vocalist,, they are called M people because they are from Manchester, UK
It's interesting that you brought up band like Disturbed doing covers in comparison to Hip Hop/Rap groups doing Samples. Most Rock band do a cover to pay homage to some of their favorite artists and usually it is well known that it is a cover, whereas with Hip Hop/Rap unless you already know the riff or harmony that was used you usually don't find out unless you do what you're doing and dig into the older music. Keep it up Man, I am loving your journey. I really wish you were here in the Detroit area and I could sit down with you and be like 'check this out...; and be able to explain some of the little details and backgrounds to some of these Classics. Kudos, have a good one!
Some trivia for you. This song was not written for the album. Roger Hodgson wrote it when he was a teenager. The closer "Child Of Vision" is the gem on this album and is my recommendation for your next reaction from them. I commented before I watched the video so I have some info for you. It does give writing credits to Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies with Travis McCoy and references Breakfast In America in the description of the video.
Yes, that's what I've been telling you all along. The problem isn't so much about doing covers as much as it is not giving credit. Rappers don't understand all of the legal crap that went on when they first started using music like that without giving any credit. Unfortunately when those lawsuits happened and things were settled in court, no one thought to say that these rappers have to give credit for the samples. They just kind of decided how long a sample could be without having to give a credit instead.
Goodbye Stranger is my favorite song off this album. The Logical Song is another favorite. Supertramp is just a band with great songs!!
Goodbye Stranger...agreed!!
Take the long way home is great too
I don't agree. Check lovers in the wind. Yer might change yer mind.
Brilliant song, as all of them are.
The Logical Song is my personal favorite.
Huge album, won multiple Grammys. The hidden gem is “Child of Vision”, it will blow you away.
Now I have to hear it...❤

So true, they are some clever guys😉with some catchy tunes.
Yes, they make me chuckle…😂
My favorite Supertramp hit was Take the Long Way Home.
100% agree!! Such a great song!!!!

My buddy Peter Henderson produced, recorded and mixed this album. Grammy winner for Best Engineered Non Classical Album. The production is unmatched.
Cool, Supertramp and ELO had the best production together with honorable mentions of Mike Oldfield, Yes and Vangelis in those days.
THANKS!
So cool!!
My uncle was the Supertramp's tour manager on the Breakfast In America tour.
🌸 wow wow that is the coolest thing
The Logical Song is more relevant today than when it came out!! A must listen to!!
Be Safe & Blessings ❣️

@megnotmegan1966 lol we are in the cool uncle club 😎
Logical Song epic! But Black P already reacted to Logical Song..
Dreamers
Goodbye Stranger is a really great song 😊
I took a Jumbo to LA in 1981 and stayed seven years.72 now and have listened to this album that takes me right back for years and even though I get old it never does. The devastation there is tragic.
Every single song on that album is a banger hit
"Kippers for breakfast" always cracked me up. Dried/smoked fish. We used to live in the UK and my dad used to fry them up in a pan for breakfast and they stunk so much they'd drive me from the house.
Until this moment, I always thought it was cookies.

No sh!t??? I owned this album, am a album cover reader and never noticed the stacked dishes!!!😮😮😮unbelievable!!
she's also holding a copy of the record. inception.
@@cotdd By the shape, I figure it’s just a menu with the song title. But look at her nametag, “Libby”.
@@scottNNJ that's what the back of the vinyl looks like, with the tracklisting below the title.
@@scottNNJ my bad, its the book inside, not the back of the sleeve

Fab choice

❤❤❤Supertramp, saw them in concert a few times

My favorite band!
They were a freakin' awesome band. So much talent t and layers of sound in their music.
This album won a Grammy award for best engineered album 😊
Another GREAT 70s BAND BREAKFAST IN AMERICA WAS RELEASED IN MARCH OF 1979 . SUPER TRAMP
Supertramp
Got to hear this whole album!
They are all masters! Just mind blowing in concert.you are seeing it live. The musicians on stage
Tryin to keep track of who's playin what. John Helliwell Sax, back up vocals. The man runs around the stage a whistle here a couple claps here . The knock out Sax solo's backup piano. You can have a grand piano and two keyboards on stage. Roger Hodgson lead vocals. An Amazing pianist!

The album is a single story , their musicianship is spectacular. Just as perfect live aback in the 70s . It’s one of those perfect albums
Such a talented band.
Love Supertramp! I still have the album that I bought when I was young and now I'm ready for Medicare! Keep up the great reactions!
Great band. One of my top five. Amazing albums, great songs and brilliant musicians!
Yep one of my top five as well.
1979 was a great year to be a young, single dude - fun times. Supertramp is part of the soundtrack of that era.
one of my all time fav Album to play without SKIPPING a tune. SET IT AND FORGET IT
This was the first album I played on my new car cassette.🎸😎
Hundreds of miles on this tape.
I still have two drawers of cassette tapes, lol.
supertramp is one of my favorite bands ever.

You won't find many, if any other rock band featuring a clarinet, great song!
And don’t forget the French horn😊 or maybe it’s tuba
Not to mention the penny whistle.

"Crime of the Century" was probably their best album, but they had a several good ones...
Kippers are herring. Just by the by. Long Way Home, Goodbye Stranger, The Logical Song...they got a lot of bangers.
I was 10 when this came out, so I learned 70’s songs later, more as an adult or heard them on the radio as a teenager. But a great music!!❤❤
"Cupid's Chokehold" by Gym Class Heroesrelies heavily on the music and chorus from Supertramp's hit song "Breakfast in America" and the producer gave credit for this. BTW kipper is a smoked fish (hering).
"From Now On" a lyrical masterpiece
Extremely talented musicians and a super-band. One of the pillars of progressive rock. Crime of the Century (from 1974) is a monster-album.
LOL
One of the greatest bands! They have so many great hits.
My older brothers had this on an 8 track tape! Listened to this all the time!
Supertramp. ❤ Only one of the GOATs. One of The Important Bands. Such a wonderful rabbit 🕳️ hole!!!!
Enjoyed your reaction to this track. Other tracks from Supertramp that I love Fools Overture, Casual Conversations and Even in the quietest Moments. Always sound great to my ears!
It has a traditional Jewish/Klezmer sound to it! It reminds me just a little bit of the music from “Fiddler on the roof”. Love it!
Pure fire. First Steely Dan then Supertramp… just playing my playlist
This was a favorite when eight tracks ruled in my car! I think it was before Dire Straits became another favorite.
One of my favorite bands too 3 and I’m young lol. But there sound and story’s is crazy
I think every song on this album had radio play.
Loved this song for the harmonies
I was 13 when this album dropped in the US. Supertramp's sound was pretty radical for the time.
Loved this song when it first came out
whole album is full of bangers
Supertramp...a most excellent classic band.
By the way, I really love it when you look things up on your phone.
The whole album is great. One of my favorites.
FIVE of the best shows I saw was Supertramp at the old Northlands Colliseum in Edmonton 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Great song….my favorite album from one of my favorite bands!!
This is my favorite from this album
One of my favorites in my collection
THIS WHOLE ALBUM IS FIRE, BP!!! ENJOY!!! HUGS from TEXAS!!!
These rappers hip-hop, whatever they sample tons, and tons of rock ‘n’ roll bands, I think
A "jumbo" is/was a large jet; kippers are smoked fish and was a common English dish. The song is a about an English person visiting America. Breakfast in America is a concept album; "concept albums" had a theme or idea that was followed through out the entire album. I still love this song.
I loved the whole album, awesome!
A kipper is a smoked herring. It's traditional in the UK, often eaten for breakfast. You see them being smoked in what look like garden sheds in seaside towns.
They are superb musicians
This album was a staple of the 8trac in the pinto.
Monster album, and superbly-produced.
The line, "Take A Jumbo Across The Ocean" refering to a jumbo jet. Notice the album cover picture....it's an air plane window.
SuperTramp and Cheap Trick don't get played nearly enough imo. Both were awesome groups. Music from my childhood. 😊
You've now heard 2 of Supertramp's great tracks, BP. They're quite unique in their style. Try Take the Long Way Home or Dreamer for more to add to your playlist.😉
More Cheap Trick 🤘🤘🤘👌⚪️⚫️⚪️⚫️

One of the greatest albums of all time😎✌
Crime Of The Century, is fabulous!
The tour for this album was my first concert in high school.

When rappers say( sampling, )they really mean stealing from the og's hoping their uninformed buyers believe they actually have writing abilities
Love it!❤❤❤
Kippers are fish that have been smoked. They are tasty but very salty. Popular to go with an English breakfast sometimes.
Yes, that's what I've been telling you all along. The problem isn't so much about doing covers as much as it is not giving credit.
