    Many languages are spoken in India , you can see your neighbor here, maybe he speaks another language. If you go to another state, you do not understand the language there. To overcome that barrier speaking English is a compulsion. Totally correct in my understanding. We have to walk shoulder to shoulder with the world.

    Only 30-35% or less young people can speak English fluently, other can understand but they are not fluent. Its bad that someone judge u with ur English. We should promote our local regional languages.

  • @mbfarookh
    @mbfarookh 4 года назад +7

    There’s a lot to speak on this topic, but then, that begs a question... ‘where do we begin?’
    The title says, “Do Indians Know How Their English Accent Sounds?” Instead of focussing on the ‘accent’, somewhere down the line, conversations drifted to ‘the importance of English in the Indian context and there were a lot of irrelevant questions that were asked by the lady that lead to vague and even more irrelevant answers.
    Why are we so apologetic about our English? Indians, unless highly trained, are bound to speak English in their own regional accent just as foreigners would speak Hindi or any other Indian language in their own foreign accents which, unsurprisingly, would sound pretty funny. The point is - would they be apologetic?
    English was thrust down our throats and crammed into our brains, for many generations, by the British. Therefore, by the time they left, English had become an integral part of our psyche and expression. The reasons for this are many - continuous exposure to English, market forces, better job opportunities both in India and abroad and perceived respect among peers dictate which language becomes popular. Unfortunately, there is no place for emotions or sentiments.
    We might have hated the British, but certainly not the language they imposed on us. This was also the case with many other colonies of the Empire upon which the Sun was beginning to set. Not surprisingly, England lost its pre-eminent position in world affairs. But, there was some solace, English became the lingua franca of the world. It opened up a wide door to the world of opportunity for all those people, around the world, who were cogent in English.
    It’s time we Indians started accepting that English is no more a foreign language, but as Indian as it can get. As of now, we are the second largest English speaking nation. By 2030, give or take a few years, we are likely to become the largest English speaking nation in the world and, believe me, it’s something we all should be proud of. Already, in many software applications, the term ‘Indian English’ is actually an option one can choose from.
    People, the world over, will begin to recognise and accept ‘Indian English’ the way it is - grammatically the same, but with strong regional accents.
    That brings me back to my question... why, if at all, should we be apologetic of our Indian accents?

    • @kumar7359
      @kumar7359 4 года назад +1

      Absolutely right. You have brought out all the relevant points succinctly.
      One important fact remains though, even if we remain indifferent to the criticisms; the use of grammar, idioms and style.
      I find these quintessential qualities in any language woefully inadequate in the way the majority of us, including me, speak English. What we can claim is that we have a good working knowledge of that alien tongue which has now become the lingua franca of the world, especially after the advent of the internet and global commerce.

    • @mbfarookh
      @mbfarookh 4 года назад +2

      @@kumar7359 Thank you, my friend, for your kind appreciation. The fault lies in our education system. In the schools, we’re taught prose, poetry and grammar, but our English syllabi do not cover topics such as idioms, figures of speech, metaphors, expressions, similes, puns, analogy, personification etc.
      Explaining the meanings and training the students in the usage is something our schools and colleges do not do, which is absolutely essential in the students’ formative years. There are countless schools and colleges who proclaim that their medium of instruction is English, but seldom live up to their claim. The conversations and instructions almost always veering towards the local language. If there’s no exposure to idioms and expressions, then, how can the student learn the usage of these quintessential aspects of English. So, there you have it!

    • @kumar7359
      @kumar7359 4 года назад

      @@mbfarookh that's right. It's time we accept that English is still alien and a utilitarian language to get us through. As you said, it's better if they recalibrate the way it's taught. Not necessarily as a language that replaces the existing ones but as a tool to interact officially when other means fail. Once we know where we stand lots of confusion about it can be overcome.

    • @mbfarookh
      @mbfarookh 4 года назад

      @@kumar7359 Not in anyway detracting from your statement, let me add a few pointers. When The US, Australia, South Africa, Caribbean Islands, Canada etc., were colonies of Great Britain, the British took unkindly to the way these colonies went about speaking their language. Especially, a lot of fun was made about the American and Australian English. Still the English purists make fun of their accents, quaint expressions and choice of idioms. Even the American spellings were different which drew a lot of flak and snobbish comments from the British puritans. But, when The US became a super power the British and the world in general started accepting their English and accents. India is also poised to become a superpower, so, everything will fall in place if we continue to grow as a nation and patronise English. India will have a great leverage if we are a strong nation and more than half a billion people speaking English. All regional languages will also survive and be instrumental in binding the family without any one language affecting the other in a detrimental way.

    • @kumar7359
      @kumar7359 4 года назад

      @@mbfarookh the point I am raising is precisely this. Why do we need to develop English as an identity that we need to carry? Why don't we treat it as a temporary tool to get by? This is where the policy makers need to make the distinction between making it an identity or just an instrument for unavoidable interaction.
      The saddest part I see is that the current crop of youngsters are good neither in English nor in the vernacular languages. That's unpardonable. I have seen this in many states.

    I have not watched this video from its own channel, but a couple of points immediately surface whilst watching.
    A) When all the interviewees mention how they speak proper English and the native speakers do not, they are so wrong and so racist. Languages evolve over time and usage in their native places take on whatever currant nuances are. These differences do not filter into countries where the native language is not English
    B) The reason why English is becoming the main language of communication in India is due to two things, Firstly, it is an easier mode of communication for Indians wherever they come from. Otherwise, when people move around the country, they would have to learn whichever is the main language of that region. Secondly, the medium of education in most schools is in English, so obviously, it will be adopted.

Aur I hope ki yeh nhi hoga ki pura India English bolke apni matri bhasa bhul jaiga. Aur yeh be nhi hona chahiye jab kise ko nhi aati aati hey English use kuch nhi aati. Mein kise ko necche nazar se nhi dekta hoon agar mere ko pata hey ki ek insaan ko English nhi aati. Ek aur baat English is only a language. It is not a measure of intelligence. Yaani ki English jo hey sift ek bhasa hey aur yeh dekha thee nhi hey ki kaun jaada smart hey. Kisee ko judge nhi karna chaihiye unka English se. Hum Indians ko English ke saat hamare khud ki bhasau ko equal importance dena chahiye.

    So this is my summary
    India got 1000s of regional languages.
    If you cross 200 Km you never gonna understand their language.
    You can't learn all the languages it's not even worthy to try.
    Easiest language anyone can learn is English.
    Let's speak our native language who can understand and go with English who doesn't.
    I am a Tamil guy and if other Tamil person speaks to me in English, I don't even care to speak in Tamil. If you are using any foreign language to your counterpart then that's the cultural disaster.

    In India some people he or she speak in English then they will get special attention from others. Yes I do agree for higher education English is very much needed. But speaking English with common man is funny. Always try to speak in National language. See Japanese, Chinese or European, Russian very rare speak in English. The South Indian don't speak Hindi Because they are very much jealous of North India But if you go to any South Indianan stores in South India that time they will speak in Hindi if you are from North. In India specially metro girls start speak in English just to show up. Do you speak English with vendors, cook, Auto driver, House made then what is the use of speaking English with your Countryman. Speaking English in public place loudly has became fashion now a days. Those who doesn't respect their own National language No body respect them.

      @Go Govinda How you can say speaking National language is unnecessary . Every indian has it's own language that doesn't mean he will not learn or speak National language it makes no sense.

    No one should imitate accents and should be proud of their own country accent!! It is a fact that in the diverse language speaking India most educated people speak to each other and particularly other states in English. The premier international level education and higher level institutes are cosmopolitan in nature and students speak in english with each other. Eastern states and southern states donot allow central govt to impose hindi --- so official language is english only apart from the state language..... best wishes....
