As a parent of a young adult who has decided to take this path, much to my surprise... I have found your "inside view" really helpful! Thanks and good luck to you all out there finding work in an area that you love!
I want to be an animation director and study in CalArts, but I'm live in Russia. I will work hard for admission to college!!
omg hi im also from russia and want to pursue animation! tho i want to go to sva probably haha
This is extremely helpful for me, you have no idea! Hearing everything your friends say is SO motivational! I'm definetely saving this video and coming back to it whenever I need a good boost of inspiration
(5:50) her advice has been to helpful thank you so much
kalee straight dropping knowledge
i just wanna say that id love to watch more "animation student vlogs" 'cause theyr really interesting :D and also i have a question: what actually is a "good portfolio" for animation school?
Wiktor Kotarski Really depends on what the specific school is asking for! Most of the time it’s gunna include figure drawings/an animation reel. There’s also usually a spot for you to put in any traditional art you’ve done!
This is very interesting for other students around the world like me ( Spain here) , keep going Alex! Love from Madrid ;)
King 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Keep posting loved your channel
RK4 Dance thank you :)
your channel is awesome man
The Purple Weirdo thank you!!
Great video Alex :0
Being your own best self advocates. Very true but so stressful. On my course we hear that all the time especially now in third year and it doesn’t get any easier. Makes you either want to really commit, put it out of your head or just run for the hills.Don’t know if I can maintain that mentality seeing as I don’t usually do art in my spare time to begin with as I’m more into watching films and animation and getting out and exploring rather than drawing, but know that I have to commit as much as I can during that time in order to actually get better. Is it possible to maintain that balance or do a lot of sacrifices have to be made. That’s the big question, and all those sacrifice is worth it for you.
*patiently awaits your next video*
❤️❤️

Literally drawing stopped me to go into Animation school... i'm so bad at drawing (can't even draw a circle by my hand) so now i'm majoring in Advertising and minoring in Film... i have Motion Graphics and Animation course in my degree.
Ok asking for genuine help here-
So I wanna become a professional animator. Wanted to for a few years. I know what it takes and am still fully willing to live up to those expectations. EVERYTHING from Concept to storyboarding to keyframes to backgrounds to inbetweens. E VER Y THING sounds lovely to me. I just wanna bring joy and wonder to the world with my stories and my apperantly charming way of drawing/picturing things!
But..
Im extremely insecure. Im so scared of failing (In my very VERY picky eyes that see every little thing I did wrong) that whenever I wanna draw, im held back by it. If I actually get over it and draw and it turns out to be good enough, I enjoy it!! I do all kinds of artsy stuff and im generally happy. However- when I fail (In my eyes, I know you still learn stuff from the mistakes you make. But that doesnt matter to me apperantly.) I get in a terrible mood. I get angry/sad and start to cry (Or sob for a few minutes) and get this REALLY strong urge to rip the paper apart or delete everything I just illustrated. For teh rest of the day im in a terrible mood and cannOT get myself to draw anymore. Not if its something i love drawing, not if its something simple like figure drawing. (This insecurity and high standards havent always been there. But Im not sure where it came from.)
I really wanna improve so far as to where I wont fail anymore and will always be able to deliver the quality I demand form myself. But obviously that takes actually drawing and designing and all that jazz. And as I said before, thats much easier said than done.
or lower my standards but I cnat change my critical eagle eye.
PLEASE tell me if you have any advice on this for me... ^^
FluffyFoots Hey! Yeah I do! Im still in a similar position with my work. Im super in my head about my drawings and I still hate the feeling when something doesn’t turn out as well as I had hoped. I think what helps me is drawing A LOT of loose sketches and not fully committing to one particular drawing unless I see potential in the sketch. My professors always tell us to “kill our babies” and not be afraid to scrap work and start anew. It can be frustrating but after drawing all the time it gets easier. Art is always about improvement and reflection. The struggle to measure up to your standards unfortunately never goes away but I try not to judge myself on my lows, but on my highs and what I know I can, and have been able to achieve. Hope this helps somewhat ;)
question: would you say that having motivation for art and animation gets you farther than commitment, or do they go hand in hand? great vid btw ^.^
Thank you! I’d say they go hand in hand. Committing to a project and finishing it is super important when making any animated short/video and so is staying motivated throughout the process. For me, that meant making sure I didn’t have to rush through deadlines and work steadily over time while leaving some time for being outside/being with friends to get away from animating for a bit. Hope that answered ur question!
Hey, i have a question. Can i do animation as a major. I'm asking because I'm not that good at drawing on the paper. My artistic skills are limited to few cartoon characters
I want to ask when you enter animation school will they help guide animation artists who don't have much technical skills and help them improve I'm still new and feels like I might not get into college
4:45 ain't no way that girl over there just lagged irl
6:40 The guy over there, hadn't he made a video in New York as a parody?
Is Chapman a good school if you are interested in storyboarding and character design?
I'm a highschool junior, and I have a youtube animation channel. I really wanna work in a studio one day, and I wanna study at a gud college or university to help me do that, but I'm an international student, how would I recommend I get a scholarship, and any tips for applying to one of these schools? Thnx
Is it expensive to go there? And do they give scholarships?
Question: How do you make a portfolio and do all schools require one?
maha mahmoud So for applying to schools a lot of them have a creative part of the application which includes a portfolio. For my school in particular, it had a portal where you could upload all your different media ( paintings/drawings/animated reels etc) So i just picked a few of the things I had done that I thought were strongest and uploaded them there!
Which animation school are you attending
i love aniimation i want to study with your community i will come im grinding...
What is your animation university name?
Im a highschool freshman and I have ZERO animation experience.
Do I have to start now? and how do you think I should start it?
Golden Retriever Work on developing your art skill set! I came with zero knowledge on animating and was able to figure it out after a while but it doesn’t hurt to get ahead! Download an animation software and practice! Also, study anatomy and gesture! Do a few figure drawings a day!
Thank you for replying! I have art lessons now and I'm learning how to paint instead of just pencils. I will listen to your advice too! I really need to draw more often haha.
Good luck to you! :)
