The pit maneuver lawsuit was settled because the law states when unable to safely pull over on a controlled access motorway, the operator is to reduce speed pull over to the right, turn the emergency flashers on, and proceed to the next exit, or safe place to pullover.

ok first thing there was plenty of space to pull over if the trooper thought it unsafe he would have told her to go to the next exit over his PA system. second reduce speed i didn't see her step on the brakes one time except for the initial tap when he lit her up. furthermore, he pulled up beside her she could have yelled out the window or anything just to acknowledge his presence. these officers have to deal with junk like this all day and every day. all anyone has to do to avoid it is comply

I'm a city girl, but I learned this isn't that abnormal in the country when I followed them to meet their owner trying to lure them back with a bucket of feed, I guess. Maybe horse crack? Drive as cautiously on country roads as you do in the city. There may be fewer impaired drivers, but there are cows and horses.

Like the saying, always pull over in a well lit area, you're supposed to turn on your hazards to let the cop know your intention. The shoulder was shallow and they could have been hit. .
I was in a 2 year diesel mechanics course in the middle 1970's. During the segment on air brakes, they taught us:
    1) EVERY vehicle on the road, including trucks and trailers with air brakes, has a brake on EVERY wheel. (We all already knew this but they had to say it anyway.)
    2) EVERY truck and trailer with air brakes, built since the early 1970's, has failsafe brakes. This means that air pressure actually disengages the SPRING LOADED brake shoes / pads from the drums / rotors until the brake pedal, in the tractor, is depressed or the disengaging air pressure is removed from the system. This way, if the brake system loses air pressure due to a broken hose, compressor failure, a hole punched into the air tank from road debris or any other cause, the springs in each air chamber on EVERY wheel will apply it's own individual brake bringing the truck to a stop automatically with no input from the driver. This is why you will sometimes see 4 black stripes on the road leading to the shoulder. The truck had lost air pressure and the brakes had locked up dragging the 4 tires on at least one axle.
    3) There are 2 knobs on the dashboard of EVERY truck equipped with air brakes. 1 red and 1 yellow.
3a) There are 2 hoses extending from the rear of EVERY tractor. One with a red connector on the end and one with a blue connector on the end. These connect to the air brake connectors on the trailer. The blue hose supplies air to release the FAILSAFE trailer brakes. The red hose supplies air to apply the trailer brakes when the tractor's brake pedal is depressed.
When you first get into a tractor, you start the engine and wait for air pressure to build until a low pressure warning buzzer quiets. You then press the above mentioned red knob on the dashboard to release the tractor brakes. You back up to your trailer and engage the 5th wheel pin, (the big trailer hitch). You pull the red knob locking the tractor brakes, get out and connect the red and blue hoses to their corresponding colored trailer's air connectors, you plug in the big round plug that supplies power to the trailer lights, you crank up the landing gear, (the 2 legs under the front of the trailer), you get into the tractor, press the red AND yellow knobs then drive away. (This is an abridged version. You should also do safety checks on 5h wheel engagement, lights, tires ect.). When you pressed the yellow knob, you unlocked the trailer brakes. When you pressed the red knob, you made air available to the tractor AND trailer brakes to apply them if the brake pedal is depressed.
I gave you this free lesson on air brake function / operation to demonstrate my point. These are not called FAILSAFE BRAKES for nothing.
There were 3 axles on that tractor, (2 rear, 1 front).= 6 brakes. One on each wheel.
There were 3 axles on each trailer, (3 rear), = 2 trailers X 6 brakes each = 12 brakes. One on each wheel. Total = 18 individual brakes on the tractor and 2 trailers. Any one of those brakes, if applied, would have eventually slowed that truck, over time, to a stop.
Even if the brake pedal, in the tractor, fell completely off onto the floorboard, the driver could have pulled the red and / or yellow knobs on the dashboard and applied all 18 brakes at once bringing even a fully loaded truck to a smoking, screeching halt in less than 200 feet on 36 large tires dragging.
Even if the air knobs had fallen off, the driver could have downshifted the transmission using the engine to slow the truck and, at 30 MPH, cut the engine off bringing the truck to manageable stop.
It is physically impossible for all 18 brakes to have worn completely out at the same time under normal operation without someone noticing. Even if they had, the metal shoes that the brake material was bonded / riveted / bolted to would have provided enough friction to stop that truck albeit in a longer than normal, longer than normally acceptable distance. All of the above reasons are why you do NOT see runaway trucks more often.
Occasionally, on the interstate or other mountainous roads, you will see runaway truck ramps up a hill or runaway truck lanes ending in large piles of dirt, cross catch straps or cross catch cables. These are usually in states with mountains and on roads with signs depicting a truck on a down grade with a percentage of the grade and continuing for X number of miles. At this point, the driver should slow down and downshift the transmission so they don't have to ride their brakes as much to keep speed control going down the hill. Most standard transmissions in trucks aren't synchronized like car transmissions and, if not shifted properly, the truck can get trapped in neutral forcing the driver to ride the brakes all the way down the hill. This extreme, unusual friction can cause the brake linings to catch fire leading to failure hence the need for runaway truck ramps or lanes. I didn't see any evidence of this in the video as there would have been a lot of smoke and maybe fire trailing from the truck as even the tires can catch fire in this case.
I submit that this driver may have been new at it, didn't know what he was doing in an emergency and / or they panicked. By the grace of God, no one was killed.

I asked about switching to neutral gear to slow down in a big rig; apparently, that's not an option for that kind of vehicle. Reminds me of when I was living out in a small city just outside the country. We had bears and all sorts of animals, so it was extremely common to see a pair of eyes crossing a high-speed country road at night. One morning after dropping my fiance off at work (still dark out) I thought the pair of eyes crossing the road in front of me was a deer. But then it just stopped in the middle of the road looking at me. I turned on my high beams (there were oncoming cars up until this point) and saw that this was no deer but a huge whole ass bull! And he would not let me pass. I tried passing him on the shoulder and he lowered his head and started charging at my car. It wasn't until an oncoming car came to a stop and the bull focused on him that I was finally able to get away. Absolutely the weirdest thing I've ever seen trying to cross the road.

I live near Little Rock and I remember hearing about the incident with the pregnant lady getting flipped. At the time, the law stated that if an officer was to attempt to pull you over, you can continue on until you find a safe place to pull over. To indicate that is your intent, you are supposed to slow down and turn on your flashers as she did. The State Troopers in this area have an especially bad reputation. The only negative interaction I have ever had with any officer around here was with a State Trooper that was clearly bored and looking for someone to be his entertainment. He pulled me over despite my following all the traffic laws and stated the reason he pulled me over was for a law that it turned out didnt exist. Something about cracks on the windshield. He asked where I was going, to which I said I was going to get my proof of insurance. He wrote me a ticket for no insurance, wreckless driving, and license plate lamp out. The wreckless driving was for driving with the crack in my windshield I assume and the license plate lamp being out was especially strange since it was in the middle of the day. All charges were thrown out when I went to court since I was insured, the cracked windshield law didnt exist, and license plate lamps only come on when the driving lights are on and I could easily prove they worked since I replaced the standard bulbs that kept going out with a bright LED strip

I do understand where your coming from about how state troopers act, however I do also wanna js note that the highway isnt all that busy, and the curb side had enough room for her to stop and for it to be safe even with her being prregnant. When u see a cop car pull up to one side on your taillight its a big indication that something is going to happen and he gave her enough time ofr in that situation to make the desicison to pull over and stop. But I also think he did jump to a put manuever very quickly. Those are only supposed to be used in situations where they are unable to stop a driver in a harrowing situation. However it doesnt seem like it shows the whole cop cam video, so I dont entirely know if she was displaying unsafe behaivor while in the vehicle.

@@Ggarden_ggnome 1 thing I can say in response to your first comment is that not all cops are good guys. When I was a kid, there were quite a few dirty cops in the area. Some of the worse I heard about was a few cops SAing woman they pulled over. And it doesn't take a busy road to cause an accident. Around the 2010s, there was a big issue with drunk drivers around here. They would usually wait till its late and not many cars are on the road and drive with no lights on hoping they wouldn't be spotted. I happened across 1 of those 1 time. We were coming up to a red-light were I30 goes over Military Road. We were on Frontage going into town. I noticed dude wasn't driving too well, so I opted not to pass him. Coming up to the light, he just kinda started to drift to the left and blew through the red-light and smashed into the wall under the interstate. He then kept trying to drive, so I followed and flagged him down incase it was a medical emergency. Turns out as I said, he was drunk af to the point he could stand. It happens alot in these areas because of dry county laws. Many of them would be on the way to the county line to restock their supply because they cant stand not being drunk constantly. Its still a problem today, but not as bad as it use to be. We do however still have plenty of problems with texting and driving, though thats usually during rush hours

@@Ggarden_ggnome Also, you are 100% right he jumped to pitting her too quickly. Cops here are supposed to go to classes to get approved to do the maneuver as well as getting authorization before doing so and they are supposed to have backup to act as a witness and provide aid should things go south such as the officer wrecking and becoming incapacitated. But reguardless of everything, it is law that they must indicate they intend to pull over by doing as she did. Slowing down and turning on her flashers. Unless she tried to speed off, there was no need to escalate the situation
