I used to make my own diesel fuel by going to the local chemist, and buying a bottle of ether!, the chemist would ask what it was for, and then sell it to me. I would go home and mix it with paraffin and an oil (it could have been castor oil, I can’t remember after 50+yrs now). Can you imagine a young kid going into a chemist/pharmacist shop today asking to buy ether without either being laughed at, or perhaps the police being called?.
Great little engines. I had a Davis 1.5cc marine diesel, was always hard to start but was supplied with an exhaust manifold . It clamped around the barrel, I had two pieces of silicone hose attached with two exhaust outlets, one each side of the boat a Kielkraft Waverider. Wish I still had it.
Yours must be a Sabre, was it a marine with a water jacket? I had a Keift Kraft Seaqueen powered by a 3.5 cc FROG Marine with twin exhaust, I still have the engine and wish I still had the boat too.
@@mylittlediesels I may be wrong but I think it was a Spitfire marine diesel. It had a large brass water jacket and heavy brass flywheel. It was near impossible to start and only ever ran once. It was a long time ago now though I may have been doing something wrong..
I believe they are still available from Cox International. Can you get model diesel fuel where you are? If not, trying homebrew but you have to be able to buy diethyl ether, dangerous stuff!

As for fuel - I will make my own brew - thank God for John Deere fluid starter that is still available and cheap otherwise I would have to pay a fortune for a liter of di-ethyl-methyl ether .. thank you for your feedback - I truly enjoyed watching your videos today.
Hi Again MR!! thanks to your videos about cox diesel i´m not afraid anymore! that is a GREAT way to get good diesel engines for low money!! my FF planes will love this as most of times we need just a little push and regular cox most of the time can be very Hot for FF use! i just order 2 heads and cranks this week!
Hello!! That's the spirit. I suspect if you don't push it too hard, the Surestart should hold without changing the crankshaft, that would make it even more economical to get a diesel. Thanks
I haven't got the engine yet,but I'm going to make one completely from spare parts; it seems a quite essential engine,I might enjoy to assemble it from zero! I'm going to green anodize the head and spinner,leaving the golden crankchase,as the tail of my gyro will have a loezenge mimetic pattern on the tail;I wonder if the muffler does its job
I will,but actually I just realized that it will cost me almost two times an engine already assembled,this is an injustice,it should be more pricy an engine that's already assembled XvX
It depends, if it is avavilable in kit form then it is cheaper than an assembled one but if you are buying the components separately then it is more expensive. Why don't you get one from Cox Internatrional? Good luck. Bye.
Have you ever tried to run this engine with an 8x4 prop ? Just curious. I can already see this engine on a two-channel assisted, vintage free flight type of model ... Ohh yeaa ... can't beat that combination.
I see that Davis offers a tool to tighten up the connecting rod / crankshaft connection on Cox engines. Have you found it necessary to do this, I wonder ? Love the sound of the dieseled Cox... suspect the neighbors will find it less objectionable than the glow version, which are kinda loud.
Is there any practical reason to turn it into a diesel? More power? Better fuel economy? Or just because! It appears you don’t need a glow plug. That’s a big plus. Also, is it straight diesel fuel? Like from the fuel station?
Hi, thank you for your interest. You have already listed all the practical reasons yourself ! For me, I just love model diesel engines, that's all, the smaller the better. The fuel is not the same as those used in motor vehicles because model diesel engines are not diesel engines as such. They can be loosely described as compression ignition engine similar to diesel engines, hence their name (they are in fact Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI), to be exact). Model diesel engine fuel consists of Ether, kerosene and Castor oil; the basic mixture has equal parts of the ingredients. To aid igniton, a cetane improver like Isopropyl Nitrate can be added, usually 2 to 3%. Well, that's what I was told when I started playing with model aeroplane engines many years ago.
I'm new to diesel conversions, They sound so low compared to a normal .049, do you know what RPM range they run compared to a normal .049? Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy them.
Hi, I'm afraid I don't know as I don't have a tacho but diesels can swing a large prop at low speed, that's for sure. The Rev range of a glow Babe Bee 049 is 15,000 RPM typical, I think. A TD can easily achieve 25,000.

Hello and greetings from UK!! Lucky you. I would always use Model Technics D1000 fuel for running in which is available here. It contains ether 35%, kerosene 35%, castor oil 28%, isopropyl nitrate 2%. I suppose you can either skip the IPN or use cetane additive.

Those were the days. The basic home-brew I used was 1:1:1 of ether : paraffin : castor oil. Looking back, weren't we lucky?

Hi, I only used a beefed-up crankshaft and I wasn't aware of a tightning tool. Not only the sound, the smell of diesel fuel is heaven.
The tool is for resetting the ball and socket connection on the piston end of the rod... Not for the big end of it.

They DO run at much lower revs than when running on Nitro, but they have much more torque on diesel, and can swing a larger prop at lower revs.
