This is a very strange selection ignoring all important popes between the 1st and 16th centuries. Some of them were more important than the named ones.
Although I love Pope St John Paul the II. I also liked Pope Benedict XVI. I love how the 2 previous popes kept the Latin tradition alive. While out current Pope Francis is starting to take away the Latin tradition and culture of the Catholic Church
@@troyrowe7670 This is not the question, but I would not rank them under the five most important popes of history and ignore Sylvester, Leo, Gregory, and Urban.
@@nickfraser422 Not to mention the amount of young Catholics who attend Latin mass. Having Latin mass near everyone will greatly increase the number of younger people attending mass. Even if bishops instituted more parishes to have the Latin Novus Ordo would be a step. The nearest TLM to me is the city of my diocese, which is almost 3 hours away and at 2pm. It greatly inconveniences those who want to attend
It's hard to choose only five good popes out of more than 250. Perhaps one would have added Gregory VII, who stood up the Holy Roman Emperor. And Pious VII, who stood up Napoleon at his heyday; when asked to hand over the Papal States to Napoleon, he famously said "Non debemus, non possumus, non volumus" (we must not, we cannot, we wish not").
I would have expected Gregory I, Innocent III or Gregory VII on this list, although, with one egregious exception, the choices are good ones. Too bad St. Pius V is shown here looking like Montgomery Burns.

For years I’ve called Leo XIII “Leo the Just;” I’m pleased he’s on the list, although I wonder where they think Leo the Great, Gregory the Great, Leo IX, Innocent III, and Gregory VII might fit.

I think Pius X is overrated here. His predecessor Leo was both a deeply spiritual and intellectual man who more realistically and constructively responded to modernity.

I got to see John Paul II in Boston October 1 1979 was awesome experience
His Holiness Pope Benedict Xvi is no doubt a future doctor of the Church
He was a Master Theologian for sure.
He's definitely a doctor of the church.
What about his husband?

Yes, in the old time, there were good Popes.
Pope Pius XII was a great pope. He is sadly misunderstood. He deserves sainthood. ❤️
Hitler was apparently very upset when he found out that the Pope was trying to have him bumped off.
For uneducated, no knowledge of history as you would say Pope Pius XII was good.
Pope Pius XII was Hitler's Pope, loyal to him more than God.
For an uneducated person as you, no history knowledge, Pope Pius XII should be your great great grandmother.

It's hard to limit the number to five. There are other great popes that deserve recognition such as Leo the Great and Gregory the Great
With all due respect and reference to Your Holiness, but this list proves that people on Reddit don't know how to choose anything
