I sent my friend one of your tiktoks and she was like "omg I thought that was you for a second" and it literally was the best compliment I've ever received
I used to be such a huge reader, but college and job stress killed it. Last week one of my friends was asking for book recommendations and I started going though a mental list of all the books I used to love. And then I had a stupid idea to write down a list of all the books that had an impact on my life. That was a huge trip down memory lane. I discovered that nearly every book I ever read is a part of me. I might have hated the character, disliked writing style, or straight up discarded books, but they're still a part of me. My personally is a hodge podge of my favorite characters. Now I'm trying to get back into what I love and just looking for some good reads.
okay i just found out abt the controversies surrounding the book. TJ Klune actually used the cultural genocide against indigenous children that occured in the 60s in Canada as his book's inspiration. The book still is a great read but i thought that people should know more about the issue that still continues to affect indigenous people.

I'm in such a lengthy reading slump that I'm starting to doubt myself - was I really into reading? What happened? WHY can't I read?! It has been SO long! I love reading, and I want to read! I'm just tired :( I wish to go back to the time when it wasn't so difficult. I hope this helps. Thanks Hannah
Oh my god same...i used to read sooo much but now even if i want to read I'm just not able to, i start a good book but end up ending just one page. Hope this helps🤞
Personally, my lengthy reading slump (lasted a couple of years) was due to being in a terrible place mentally. Most of the time I just couldn't muster up the energy to do any reading; and when I could, I would abandon the book at the first indication of a challenge for the protagonist. I just didn't have the mental energy to work through *any* sorta conflict/challenge, even the fictional ones. But once my mental health improved, I went right back to reading ... Personally, it helped me to give up my obsession with reading for a bit - I just accepted "yeah, I was a bookworm, I no longer am, and that's okay". I started listening to a lot of podcasts to fill my time and cut myself some slack about not reading.
I stopped reading for 6 years. I went from devouring 2 books a week to completely forgetting that reading was a hobby. The break coincided with university entrance exams, the university itself and the job search. Over the years I have been noticing that when my life undergoes important changes it's impossible for me to sit for hours and escape reading. I have come to the conclusion that when there're vital changes that affect my life, my mind feels the need to dedicate its effort and energy to adapt to the situation, because it is instinctive. The insecurity and uncertainty that changes produce, makes me unable to concentrate for hours on something that apparently isn't of vital importance. I don't know if it will be your case, but if it is, rest assured that when life calms down you will read again, because if it's something you like to do, you will find yourself returning to it eventually. There is no need to force it, maybe your attention is just focused in something that requires all your attention.
Also The Silent Patient! I haven’t read in YEARS but I literally read this book in THREE DAYS - I read 100(ish) pages the first two days and then read 120 pages the third day. I could not put it down. Yes, I do have a lot of free time.
I liked that book, I've heard a lot of people say they saw the ending coming a mile away but I was totally blind sided and I enjoyed it a lot. I think I read it in a day.
This couldn't have come at a better time Hannah! I'm waiting patiently to fly to see my father in Asia because travel restrictions suck so the days just seem endless and I can't settle with any book....this is much appreciated ❤
I watched this video back in late September and picked up “The Starless Sea” per your recommendation and I just finished it last night. It is one of the best books I’ve ever read and I thank you so much for recommending it, I don’t think I’ll find anything as magical again. It changed my perspective on so many things! Happy new year!
i think a big reason the starless sea pulled me out of my reading slump is because of the characters themselves, and their deep connection to stories and some specific stories, so it really made me think of and appreciate those books that i have deep connections to, so if anything it inspired me to reread a bunch of books that impacted me deeply
Classic Hannah blessing us with her beauty, her voice and her incredible taste in books. Never lose your magic 💖💖💖 You go girl !! Edit : Wow so much likes o_o ! You guys are so sweet thank you so much 💖
I've heard so much about The House at the Cerulean Sea but never actually considered reading it until I've heard you speak about it. You really have a gift for this, I literally always leave your videos with my TBR so much longer than before.
I usually read 2-3 books and always fall into a slump for a few weeks. I did finally start listening to the audiobook for The Great Alone this week and am really enjoying it. I crochet 99% of the time so I’m grateful for audiobooks 😊
I'm a huge fan. I've been in a reading slump for about a month now, but I'm off to the book store now that I have watched this. Thank you, Hannah. I admire you a lot and I rarely miss your videos.
I have literally just been searching "Books to get you out of a reading slump" and this video is perfect! Hannah has done it again and given us a brilliant video!
This video couldn’t have come at a more perfect time! 🙏🏻. But also just watching bookish videos helps me a lot to want to read more and get out of that slump
I love how everyone has such different tastes! The Starless Sea took me a month to read and put me in one of the biggest reading slumps of my life!! The only reason I finished it was because I bought it full price and felt guilty dnfing
I'm surprised that you didn't have short story collections as a category. Great to get out of a reading slump for the same reasons as poetry but, more accessible.
Becuz of you I actually came out of a reading slump.. Last year I didn't read anything... & this year cuz of you.. I've read almost 8 books which is remarkable for me.. 😄😄
Another non-fiction book I can recommend is Know My Name by Chanel Miller. It's written so that even non native english speakers (aka me) can understand it easily while it's also written beautifully and with so much heart. Her story is very hard to read about but also you won't be able to put it down ♡ And a graphic novel that has a lot of depth and character even in its first volume is Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples.
When I read The Night Circus it actually put me into a reading slump because it was not for me at all. And so Starless Sea was not even on my radar. But after your description of the book, I think I should put it on my TBR
I DNF’d The Night Circus the first time I tried reading it. But I just finished the audiobook and almost DNF’d it again. It got better by the end but I feel like it didn’t really wrap anything up & just left more questions.
It's like every time Hannah recommends books, I just have to start practising how I'm gonna apologise to my bank account, Also, I just love your voice Hannah, you should narrate audiobooks!! You sound and look like an absolute QUEEN!!
A book about books recommendation: the dictionary of lost words by pip williams. A fictional retelling (with historically accurate details) of the making of the Oxford dictionary. It quickly became one of my favorite all time books. You’ve got a look into the English language, classism, feminism, romance, sexism. It was so well done!
I've been in a two-year reading slump. I'm pretty sure Shadow of the Wind was somewhat responsible for the slump, but I love the way you talk about the books you love! The aliebn graphic novel is one of my favourites though, so cute and precious.
hi, hannah! i'm not really one for the comments but i just want to say that the books you've recommended through years have made me love reading even more, and helped me get out of terrible slumps. some of my all-time favorites, i only picked up the first time because of your videos and i couldn't be more grateful enough. thank you for sharing us not only the books you love, but also the reasons why you love them and the impact it had on you. it's not only that, but the way you poignantly put and express it into words, makes me even appreciate these books more and realize how lovely it is to read. thank you very much! xoxo
The first thing I thought of when I played this video was how much I liked your glasses. They’re so fitting and pretty, I love round and big square frames on people.
how did you know i needed this video???? I just came across a heartbreaking spoiler for Crooked kingdom and cannot bring myself to read it and hence in a reading slump since a week. just started listening to sadie and hopefully I can fall in love with another book AND bring myself to read Crooked kingdom as well. your videos are therapeutic from your voice alone tysm for posting
I LOVED Daisy Jones and the Six! I read the physical copy and then listened to the audio book right after I finished reading it😂 it did put me into a bit of a reading slump just because that story felt so real and I wanted more. So I waited to read anything until I could get my hands on another Taylor Jenkins Reid book, which was Evelyn Hugo, and it had the same effect on me😂
I just want to thank you for the fact that your channel is the first place I heard about six of crows. The Grisha books are the best works of art I have ever come in contact with, brought me out of a dark place and are so much more than books to me
Your message in the beginning of the video came at the perfect time for me, because I feel like I’ve forced myself to read so much lately that I’m enjoying it less - so I’m now realizing that I probably should take a short break or just slow down a bit.
I’ve had such trouble with reading lately due to my thyroid giving me such terrible anxiety and depression. I’m starting to do a little better, but I’m really really REALLY grateful for this video! Thank you, Hannah for posting such honest videos and always being such a calming presence here. 💜
The book that gets me out of a reading slump is a) a good first sentence or paragraph b) a likable, smart main character c) accessible, easy to understand d) lots of dialogue and e) minimal descriptions of the terrain. I know. Just give me a good mystery!! When I’m not in a slump I enjoy some magical realism or sci-fi.
yes! i read the house in the cerulean sea because you recced it earlier this year and it’s what got me out of my reading slump this summer! and it’s now one of my favorite books😅 thanks for these recs!
I read Sadie sometime early this year and WOW.. I was completly blown away because it is so captivating. I finished it in the middle of the night because I couldn't stop reading
What helped me getting me out of my reading slump this summer was reading extraordinary real life survival stories. I just can't stop reading whenever I get to one of these books because its so fascinating. For example "Jungle" by Yossi Ghinsberg, he survivad in the amazonas all by himself in extreme conditions and there are some very mysterious happenings in the story aswell that still to this date has not been solved. I read one other about two female journalist getting lost in the Kalahari desert and survived on their wits all by themselves (but its not in english) My next read probably is gonna be one about a man that got lost for a long time at sea on his fishing boat.
I love Sarah Kay. I first heard her when she & Phil Kaye came to do a poetry reading at my high school back in (I believe) 2012 and I am still to this day a huge fan of theirs.
This video came at the perfect time. My depressive episode that I’m currently in is killing me and causing a major reading slump and I’m so anxious bc my first semester of college starts in 6 days. Some of these books are sitting on my shelves so I’m totally going to pick them up❤️❤️
I can also leave you my email if you would like to chat!!! Although even if you do want to, but are unable to, I get it too!!! Depression often makes people withdraw socially (in addition to everything feeling like it takes so much energy to do).
Who else would just love it if each and every one of us could have just one day at her book shelf's and read as much as we want and go back home and buy all the books we loved?!! Love you sooooo much Hannah!!!!!!!!
Reading slumps are very common. An excellent way to get out of it is to read a wonderful book. It can be a natural mood enhancer. All The Light You Cannot See is a book that always boosts me out of my reading slumps.
Buzzing to see Sarah Kay on your list. Her spoken word version of "B" (If I should have a daughter) is the most beautiful poem I've ever heard and I immediately bought a copy of No Matter The Wreakage, after hearing it. She has a beautiful way with words.
*Magical / fantasy* •The house in the Cerulean Sea - TJ Klune •The weight of feathers - Anna-Marie McLemore *Books about books* •The shadow of the wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafon •The starless sea - Eric Morgenstern *Unique format / audiobooks* •Daisy Jones and the Six - Taylor Jenkins Reid •Sadie - Courtney Summers *Poetry / in verse* •No matter the wreckage - Sarah Kay •The poet X - Elizabeth Acevedo *Graphic novels* •Everyone’s an aliebn when ur an aliebn too - Jomny Sun •The prince and the dressmaker - Jen Wang *Non-fiction* •Persepolis - Marjane Satrapi •In the dream house - Carmen Maria Machado Happy reading! 😊✨
a book that had the same effect on me as The Starless Sea had on you was House of Leaves. it’s definitely not for everyone and can be confusing as well but woww i read it and came out of my YEARS long reading slump. its amazing what a book can do tbh
I love graphic novels they help with my anxiety at night. The Anne of Green gables graphic novel is so cute. I love the Persepolis movie but I weirdly have yet to read the book. I did read “Embroideries” by the same author and it was so good!
i read in the dream house a few weeks ago on your recommendation and oh my god i devoured that book!! it’s so interesting how she looks at her experience through so many different lenses. loved it so much thank u!!
Rereading some of my favorite books has definitely helped me in the past so that is a great piece of advise. Also - I've never heard of The Weight of Feathers and I am very intrigued! ;)
i'm currently in a reading slump and have actually been wanting to read the starless sea, and here's my sign to do so!! thank you for your recommendations, hannah, you're the best :D
It feels like this video was made for me 💗 yesterday i had planned to listen to an audiobook but i wasn’t really in the mood to read another book. And a part of me was saying that I shouldn’t push myself to read but another part of me was saying that I should take advantage of the free time I still have since uni is starting. And today I find that hannah has blessed me with another video 💗💗💗 legit just made my day better ✨
Im trying to get out of a very long reading slump cuz I’m taking AP Lit this year and then going to college for creative writing so this is much appreciated lol
Loved this video and recommendations! The Shadow of the Wind is literally one of my favorite books ever!! If you like that book, then I highly suggest checking out "A Trip to the Stars" by Nicholas Christopher. I randomly got this when I bought one of those "Date With a Book" items and was shocked I fell in love with it as much as I did considering I had no idea what title I'd be getting.
I knew none of these, thank you for your recommendations. I naturally gravitate towards mysteries for escape and self-help, productivity, spirituality-life balance books for self improvement and need palate cleansers and new reads to explore. Mission accomplished with your suggestions!
I bought in the dream house from your earlier recommendations. It was absolutely incredible especially coming out of a relationship that really paralleled the memoir
I'd love it if you could make a video on how to get over procrastination as well😭 I've heard you talking about how you used to deal with it too, and would like if you could share what helps you get over it.
You have to read the other books by Zafon! After I’ve finished the graveyard of the forbidden books series I went through a reading slump because it was just amazing!! You won’t regret it!
there's just something magical about hannah and her voice that SHE MAKES ME READ EVERY BOOK SHE RECOMMENDS.
🥺💖
right???
Obviously she is using magic
Same tho!! Glad I'm not the only one who feels that! XD
when hannah tells me it’s so good, i believe her
Another tip to get yourself out of a reading slump : watch one of Hannah's recommendation videos. Her amazing recs and soothing voice will most definitely compel you to read something. This is a tried and tested method which works every time
🥺🥺🥺
Exactly 💯...It got me out of one.
HAHA YESSSS

"All the books I read are a part of me" such a beautiful line you said 😭💕
the House in the Cerulean Sea really is the most heart-warming book that gives you all the fuzzy feels 🥺🥺
+ the lgbt representation! 💓🌈
okay i just found out abt the controversies surrounding the book. TJ Klune actually used the cultural genocide against indigenous children that occured in the 60s in Canada as his book's inspiration.
The book still is a great read but i thought that people should know more about the issue that still continues to affect indigenous people.
YOU NEED to read bear otter and the kid by TJ Klune (same author as Cerulean sea) the whole series is amazing
That doesn’t make it controversial. He based it off discrimination and genocide, that’s not a bad or controversial thing?
Cool, I've been reading Tropic of Cancer except I like to pretend the character Van Norden is like a Bailey Jay, mite write my own book think I'll call it "Beyond the Valley of Penises"
Hannah literally just tells a book, and I add it to my WISHLIST. Her recs are an auto-buy for me!

Me too
Personally, my lengthy reading slump (lasted a couple of years) was due to being in a terrible place mentally.
The fact that even RUclips knows I’m in a reading slump…😭
I'm slowly getting out of a reading slump but these recommendations are perfect. Thank you Hannah 😘😘😘😘😘
Her videos always feels like home and are soo calming ❤

Hello dear, how are you doing?
I would recommend “Fun Home” by Alison Bechdel, it’s also a graphic novel autobiography! Highly recommend it 💕
I read Sadie sometime early this year and WOW.. I was completly blown away because it is so captivating. I finished it in the middle of the night because I couldn't stop reading
Shadow and Bone got me out of a slump I didn't even know I was in. I'm so addicted to reading again! Just bought The Starless Sea too :)
The way you describe the starless sea is exactly how I do. Great recommendations 👌
I dnf’d The Starless Sea. I feel like you either love it or hate it. I loved The Night Circus though.
Sadie is hands down the best audiobook I have ever listened to. It was so well done by the cast.
I need this as I am currently in my worst reading slump yet. Thank you Hannah! 😊
I so agree with the starless sea. I feel like you either love it or hate it. I LOVED it!
Some of these books are sitting on my shelves so I’m totally going to pick them up❤️❤️
Hi Isabella, I am sending you so much love! 🦋✨ be gentle with yourself wherever you can. // I'm wishing you the best in your first semester! :3
The way you describe the books makes me fall in love with them , way before i even read them❤❤
☺️💕
@@AClockworkReader I second that! I was in love with The Night Circus before I even read it!
Fell absolutely in love with The Starless Sea, both audiobook and print 📖🎧💙🧜🏻♀️
Agree with the Daisy Jones And The Six audiobook recommendation. I listened to it a while ago and loved it!

The only thing I’m proud of is the fact that I’m almost always early to her videos 😌🙌
The Shadow of the Window is such a good one! It’s hard to put down.
a book that had the same effect on me as The Starless Sea had on you was House of Leaves. it’s definitely not for everyone and can be confusing as well but woww i read it and came out of my YEARS long reading slump. its amazing what a book can do tbh
Just added this to my list!
Very coincidentally bought shadow of the wind yesterday before seeing this! So excited to read it.
I loved The Starless Sea! Another book I always go back to to bust a slump is The History of Love, by Nicole Krauss.
You are the only person I haven't skipped the commercial for! You speak very well and I like your choices of glasses!
I just read "The Poet X" because of your recommendation. It was incredibly good! Thank you for introducing Elizabeth Acevedo to me.
I appreciate how devoted you are to get me out of my reading slump
In the dream house was such a well written heartbreaking book, definitely helped me out of a slump
I bought in the dream house from your earlier recommendations. It was absolutely incredible especially coming out of a relationship that really paralleled the memoir
i used to feel so guilty being in a reading slump until i found out you can burnout even from the things you love
I'd love it if you could make a video on how to get over procrastination as well😭 I've heard you talking about how you used to deal with it too, and would like if you could share what helps you get over it.
Hannah u know perfect timing..
I hv been in a reading slump for a longg time and this video is gonna help me soo much
💛💛💛 I hope it does!
@@AClockworkReader omggg u replied 🥺
I recently finished The Starless Sea as well!! It truly is a wonderful story.
You have to read the other books by Zafon! After I’ve finished the graveyard of the forbidden books series I went through a reading slump because it was just amazing!! You won’t regret it!
Thank you for recommending spanish authors and books!!! Love from Spain!
Hannah is SO magical and I already feel like I'm already out of my reading slumber ;)))
What got me out of my recent reading slump was Vampires in the Lemon Grove. Fantastic short stories. Highly recommend.
I'm just getting out of a slump myself, I started rereading my all time favorite series and it's been helping. Such an underrated gem.
Great recommendations especially Shadow of the Wind, what a fantastic novel, could rescue anyone from a reading slump.
