- When the winter months were approaching here in northern Illinois and all big events done for the year, Byron Dragway hosts test n tune weekends till the snow flies. You will see mostly anything at these events as everyone is trying to get a few more passes in before the season is over. Honestly these last events can be somewhat boring but not when you have a local racer strike up a friendship with another racer, who comes from Minnesota to test and proceed to match race each other on multiple weekends much to the delight of the spectators!
Eric Olsen, from Freeport Illinois, who by the way drives his Twin Turbo '83 Ford Ranger to and from the track, takes on Lakeville, Minnesota's Nathan Shaw and his Twin Turbo '71 Nova, who also has driven his Nova to Byron from Minnesota in a 3 day 3 racetrack event earlier this year. What also makes this matchup interesting is Eric's Ranger is a somewhat low budget build compared to Nathan's Nova but nevertheless holds it own. Watch as the guys battle it out with both drivers ending up setting their personal best times! Eric runs his best ever at 8.45@162mph with Nathan running an incredible 7.90@172mph! You can bet Eric is already planning on how to up his game for next year! Byron Dragway 10-16

THE GUY IN THE RANGER HAS TO REALLY DRIVE IT TO KEEP IT UNDER CONTROL

Chevy. other than the Corvette,Camaro,. is. still searching for a. face !!!
Great racing video - good competition and super nice wheel stands. Times were very impressive for two street machines. What many of us still would like to own and drive and I am 65.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome match up! Both are amazing, and they drove them home!
I love my ford ranger 1987!!
Always enjoy your right ups, thanks for the vids.
Thanks! I'm glad you read the stories as it's the hardest part for me to do lol
You're doing better than me, I can't even write write right =]
I remember the Stranger from drag week years ago, think they hit the ditch that year too. Cool to see it still around. 👍🏻
when Hank Hill goes full turbo
Why is your truck so heavy? My 84 has a stroker sbf and weighs 2660lbs.
🤔
two turbos with oiling system, intercooler, ice box holds 40#, plumbing for all that, still has the heater and blower motor for those cold mornings, the split-mono leafs are hella heavy, steel driveshaft, and all built to survive street driving. Legal 8pt. cage, too. What's yours missing that keeps it so light?
@@paingang1000 stock suspension, Aluminum heads, 8.8 , no cage. I have no weight in it for traction yet either. Still has the heater and blower and a built driveshaft. Very cool truck you have there man.
Yes even though I'm a Ford guy both cars are awesome. Right now I'm stuffing a mildly built low 10-second Cleveland in a 92 S10
427 w roasts an ls. Goooo Ford!
Dave's Radio Repair post it to RUclips would love be to see it
That ranger would benefit a lot from sitting lower like the Nova. It stop doing wheelies like a sandrail and benifit a few tenths from aero and huge gains from a diet! I cant believe its 3500. I guessed 2800 Slammed is ideal for the strip but i just saw it drive home so its perfect for street/strip
My 84 with a stroker v8 weighs 2660lbs. No way that weight is right.
Beautiful
I've seen the nova run at CFR before, such a smooth car running down the track
Nova pretty serious too.
Late response but im just curious on the transmission set up on the ranger... im also 17 and trying to get into the sport. I wanna learn as much as i can... thanks!!
It's a 1.80 low gear JW case powerglide with a Hipster brake. Hope this helps!
Nice
👍 good racing
if you had to choose..
The Ranger doesn't have his window net up.
That was on purpose so we could see him, he put it up on the run ;)
You can see it's not up on every run he made.
I'll be sure to remind him next time
I've never seen a pick up seriously challenge a 2 door. the 427 Side oiler high rise SOHC was the best motor ever developed
Carat Cranker 427 windsor
Boss 💕👍
7.90 from that chevelle, that was awesome.
Waylon Richardson Nova
That is a Nova I have had two Old School Nova in my life
I have a 91 ford ranger 4.0 v6
I will race either one in my ranger my 2.5L will smoke them anytime in the slowest race ever I bet mine can get high 40,s in a quarter mile with no problems so bring it on and bring your $ or titles.
I'm sure they would icon set it up.Btw where's video of yours to see?
@@victoryredcolorado can you take it right to the lanes after driving 35 miles to the track?. Yea, i'm slower than 3 years ago, too. Nate's big block now, so i'm sure he's slower than 7.90's.
Great video as Always
Thank you!
more American down hill racing
Cant believe ranger is that heavy
Its funny how small compact trucks are. I have a first gen colorado that too is heavy. One of the reasons you don't see many converted into drag trucks.
