  • This is an overview of an older mill retrofit with a Masso integrated controller done for a client. I hope you ask the proper questions to any sellers of used systems.
Proceed with caution, and remember a consultation is always cheaper than losing time, and money on refurbishing an incorrectly built production robot.

This is really enlightening. I know I have been guilty of this method of "pay and pray" in the past and have made some costly mistakes. Learning all that you can before buying a machine is major especially if you think of buying something that was a former persons DIY project!

@@corvetteguy50 absolutely and thanks for sharing this. I know a lot about EMI from my background in IT and working in data centers but translating my past knowledge into my current focus like machines and such it definitely helps to watch videos like this. Always learning, never finished!

Vince, Good to see you again. Well not you, but your videos. I really enjoy your videos by the way. I will add my 2 cents (even though they are worth 1. And i am absoutly no expert. ) about this retro fit. Especially since I am struggling through masso retro fit on the same machine. I think the $6000 price tag is mostly due to the chassis . That is a Benchman mx not alot of info out there on them but they were 39k - 65k new. As far as what they are.. its about as good as it gets in the weight class. Very high quality mechanical components and electronic components for that matter albeit dated. It has granite composite frame. 0 backlash ball screws. Servo motors. Very purposely made. Original machine came with several different spindle options, tool carisel option And more. Now on to this machine. On top of all the bummer things you pointed out. Is the spindle swap of lower quality. All 3 benchman spindles were of high quality. And the original servo drive motors also swaped for lower grade components. But in its defense. If it moves and and does things you could do worse with 6k. But not the system for making quality parts off of the truck.

Thank you for your support. The point you made about the robots chassis is correct, but the electronics on a retrofit actually bring any robot to life. In this situation the person performing the retrofit did it incorrectly as covered in the video. This is the most important part of any production robot as it makes the unit automated, and is meant to produce a stable production machine. Regardless of how well a chassis is constructed, or the transmission that it uses to automate it if the electronics included to run it aren't done properly the end user its supporting is almost always plagued from the start with problems. This was my point with this video. What makes this even more interesting is your point about the robot's price when it was new. The person retrofitting the system should have known it from the start, and he ended up reducing its value to virtually nothing by performing a retrofit incorrectly on it Thank you,
      Vince

wow that's some pretty shoddy retrofit work there. for 6k that guy must be on something. $1200 for the masso, then maybe $300 for the motors, $100 for the vfd $150 for the router spindle (isn't this meant to be a mill?) then maybe 500-1k for the machine in non functional condition. so lets say the guy has 3k into it, how did he get to $6200 surely there isnt 3k of labor in that shoddy work. for 5k i bought a full size tc22 100% functional but tired vmc, then stripped it and mechanically restored and retrofitted with centroid oak and ac servos i probably have 15k into it done and dusted, its like new, balls screws linear ways, fully rebuilt tool changer, spindle, spindle motor complete nut and bolt, every bearing restoration, re hand scraped in all the mating surfaces, stripped and repainted. maybe i should send you a link to my pictures for you to review my work. its took me 2 years to rebuild my machine properly in the little spare time i have but it beats spending over 60-100k on something new of comparable.

Thank you for your support, and well said. Rebuilding a robot to new condition is never a fast task, and ultimately the knowledge it takes to do so is relative to the required investment to complete the project. Thank you,
