Some audio consoles have built-in dual-functions (FOH or monitor duty)

- A dual-function console is an audio console that can be used for FOH mixing or for dedicated monitor mixing. If used for monitors, dual-function consoles have to be set for "monitor" mixing.
This video is in response to a comment posted by a viewer regarding another video we have pertaining to an audio snake splitter.
This video is an overview of setting up a dual-function console for monitor mixing. Most all analog consoles that support a dual-function mode operate in nearly the same way as referenced in this video. Please note, not all consoles support dual-functions.
The console in the video is an Allen & Heath GL2400. It is used for FOH for some events and for monitors at other events.
Just bought this same board a few weeks ago. Thanks for for the info, although I'm late to the party.
Thank you very much for this video . This just confirmed that I should buy this console.
Thanks man, you just saved me a day or two trying to get my monitors setup lol
No problem 👍
I just bought this same mixer for my home studio and thanks for sharing
This mixer looks complicated, what’s the price of this ?
❤❤❤ great job brother 🎉🎉🎉
Haha I never notes the little switch from FOH to Monitor. now I know thanks!!!!
This is really random, but I’m using the bigger version of this guy (GL3800) to mix live sound. I’m using MTX 1 & 2 as a quick way of sending in ear monitor signals to the stage. I break down the band into group mixes that feed each MTX, making for a quick IEM mix that doesn’t require fiddling with a ton of Aux sends.
I further break down the entire mix by using the “Grp to LR” buttons - the “L” mix is master vocals, and the “R” is master instruments. I have left Group 8 open for signals that I want to send ONLY to the in ear monitors and keep out of the FOH sound. To accomplish this, I don’t depress “Grp to LR” for Group 8, but I can still turn up the Group 8 level in the MTX channels, feeding that signal to the monitors.
Now, my problem. Whatever audio I route to Group 8 slightly leaks into the Main mix, even though it isn’t assign to L R or M. It’s far louder in the MTX 1 & 2 channels, but when the room is quiet, Group 8 can still be slightly heard in the Main speaker. This has frustrated me to no end, and I can’t figure out why it’s happening.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Interesting situation. Does the GRP-8 audio get louder/software when you move the GRP-8 fader?
A little hard to troubleshoot without being at the console...
Try checking these areas:
1. If the signals you are sending to GRP-8 are not fully panned "R", those signals may be present in other groups they may be assigned to.
2. Make sure the assignment switches for the channels you don't want in FOH are fully de-assigned. You may need to exercise the assignment buttons to ensure they are "clean". Dirty buttons can cause issues.
3. Try exercising the PAN controls on GRP-8 as well as the MTX controls. Dirty controls can sometimes "leak" neighboring signals (rarely, but may be worth trying).
4. (long shot) - make sure the dual-function switch for GRP-8 is set for GRP use and not AUX use.
5. With the issue present in the system (like you mentioned above), pan all the other MTX controls all the way down one at a time. If the audio issue disappears, the channels you thought were only going to GRP-8 are in other MTX/GRP channels.
Hopefully, it's a slight routing issue with the board and nothing major.
I am thinking of buying one of these for my recording studio since I sold my large format in-line console a few years back. There's no inline monitoring, as you know, but if I get either the 32 or 40 channel versions, I can run the mics through channels 25 to 40 and run the returns w/the line inputs from channel 1 to 24. There is very limited brand new boards out to record old school (without a DAW) these days unless you want to go to a large format console. I know they still sell this board new, but i may buy a used one if it's clean and in great shape. I could buy two 24 channel versions also, which I may consider, one for the line inputs and mics inputs and one for the track returns. I like that these boards you can reconfigure internall with a jumper to have the direct outs post fader/EQ. Nice video.......
It would be best to have two 24 chanl. boards.
Thanks for the comment.
Why would you run the auxs post fader? You are still going to be sending x amount to the singer, x amount to the drummer, per channel. So, if youre just going to keep the fader at 0, that is essentially the same as running pre fader. I guess if everyone in the band says 'more vocals!' at the same time, you can easily bump that fader up.
Running auxs post fader (when running a separate monitor console) provides more control over the instrument/vocal. You sort of answered your own question with your last comment about "more vocals". Just as you would could send more vocals to everyone, you can also remove more vocals from everyone... very quickly (think feedback). Once the faders are set to -0-, any actual monitor mixing is still conducted with the channel aux sends.
Awesome video. I noticed you work a lot on Analog boards. Do you prefer analog over digital?
Thank you for the comment. Yes, we prefer analog boards, though we do use a Presonus board for smaller events.
stageleftaudio I figured. I just sold my XR12, and bought a Mackie PROFX16V2, and let me tell you man, I love the warm sound of that board. I’m sorry, but I just had to go back to analog. I operate an X32 at my church, and I like it, but my personal board has to be analog. 😎
Analog boards also tend not to require a lot of attention while mixing events; they allow us to focus on the band and the mix... it's hard to focus on the band when you are constantly looking down determining what layer the faders are on when moving between monitors, mixes, DCAs, etc.... We're not opposed to digital boards, but we find analog to be a lot friendlier than many digital consoles.
Yes, I agree 100%. All those layers give me a workout every time.
Hi sir.. Thank u for sharing your ideas. Your video content is what i am looking.
My question, does it apply to our mixing board? ZED428. coz i need a monitor mix. Thanks
.
Thanks for your comment. The ZED428 does not appear to be a dual-function console (as referenced in the video); however, most any console can be used as a monitor mixer. Instead of using faders to control the main monitor mixes (as in a dual-function console), the "aux" knobs would be used.
How to setup sub group ?
thank you so much!!!!!!
for so valiuvable info.
and thank you for sharing it.
in order for me to have a beter understading of this.
how many chanels woul you recomend to asign to every sub grup.??????
or how you think is beter to spear them into sub grups.???????
thanks in advance for your time.
When the console is configured for monitor use, the sub-groups are used for master monitor sends. There is no recommendation on the number of channels that should be assigned. The number of channels assigned is based on what the band needs, not on what the monitor engineer thinks should be there.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for reply.
Please make a video on how to insert external effect on an analogue mixing board
We do have a video on this site that covers effects. Take a look...
ruclips.net/video/ChsHhgM70Ek/видео.html
This should give you a place to start.
At some point in the future, we will be doing another video on interfacing with outboard gear.
How would you get the signal to the foh board or would it be foh board to monitor board. Would it be via direct outs on each channel ?
When using two separate boards, a snake splitter is commonly used to send the instruments/vocal signals to both boards at the same time. There is a video on this channel pertaining to snake splitters.
here's another 2 questions 1) is there any advantage to using the insert jacks to put the signal through the EQ rather then just coming out of the output to the EQ then from the EQ to the monitor amp? and 2) is there any point to run a compressor on the monitors? thanks P.M.
Using the inserts keeps a steady input voltage on the EQ. Any adjustments on the FOH faders will not impact the EQ. Though, placing the EQ in-line between the console output and the amplifier input will cause the EQ to "amplify" (or reduce) the signal voltage anytime the main FOH faders are moved. If you move the FOH fader(s), you will probably need to re-adjust the EQ to keep the voltages where you set them. With the EQ in the insert position, you don't need to touch the EQ once it is set.
I have a similar mixer but it’s my primary mixer. 32 channel allen Heath. Good info to know on it
Nice console!
Is it possible to use a mixer like the GL2400 for both purposes in a live setting simultaneously?
Using the console at FOH with it setup for monitor use (as in the video) can be done. It's not done very often due to the "sacrifice" of subgroups and the added layer of "work" in managing monitors using subgroups. If you use subgroups, this will cause issues with trying to manage subgroup levels. Depending on how many subgroups a board has, some people will use half their subgroups as the monitor-sends (as in the video) and keep the other half as subgroups. For this type of setup, you would just "reverse" half your subgroups.
stageleftaudio Thanks!
can the gl2800 be used for direct out in post eq for recording?
For post EQ on direct outs, I don't think so. The direct out connections on consoles are usually only post gain/trim only. You may want to check the service manual for the GL2800 to confirm.
Hi, I want to add a FX Unit to my Gl2400 but all aux are used and ST as well, how to add the unit using inserts or matrix ext??? thanks for ur help and videos...your videos are very helpful thanks a lot.
Looks like your options for effects are rather limited. If you need effects on a single mic (for example) one vocal mic, the effects unit can be added to the "insert" for a specific channel. If you need effects on a "group", the effects can be added to a matrix channel (just as you mentioned), and then return the effects to an open channel (to give yourself some control over its "blend" into the rest of the mix).
You could place the effects on an "insert" for one of the sub-groups and then assign channels to that sub-group. This may be your best option (based on your original question). Also, to emulate another aux send, you could add the effects unit to a sub-group "output", and then return it to an open channel.
I would not recommend placing any effects unit on the FOH outputs.
stageleftaudio thanks for the reply... I will experiment with the matrix how it works. Thanks again.
Hi this is a great video and thanks, is it possible to use one desk to do stage, stream and house,,
I will await your reply.
God Bless
Yes. Many analog consoles can do all three. Most all digital consoles can do all three. Streaming is usually done through the Matrix of a console (for consoles that offer matrices). However, the console usually only provides the mixing for the streaming... the actual streaming (and interfacing to the internet) is done through a computer (setting broadcast levels for the stream).
So does this mean that if you switch it you then cannot use it as a regular mixing board for your band, only for monitor speakers.
I thought dual meant you can use it for both simultaneously ???
It can still be used as a regular FOH console if the switch is set to monitor use. However, managing the monitors (while using the board as a FOH console) may be more work than what would be considered "normal". Setting the console for monitor use just makes it easier to use a console as a dedicated monitor console. The big difference in setting a board for monitor use is the sub-groups and "AUX" sends changing roles. If you use subgroups for FOH work, it can be difficult to manage subgroups using rotary knobs (AUX controls) instead of a fader. Also, with the board in "monitor" mode, there are no insert points for the AUX sends... assuming you would be using the AUX sends as subgroups (with the board in monitor mode).
"Dual Functionality" means the console can be used for either dedicated FOH or dedicated monitor duty. Dual function boards can still be used for FOH and monitor work at the same time... it's just easier (and standard practice) to leave a board in FOH mode when mixing FOH and monitors at the same time from the same board. If you've ever mixed monitors on a dedicated board (with the board set for "monitor"), it is a lot easier to do than running monitors from FOH.
Bagai mana cara pasang efek nya
need a hand i have the 4800 im trying to get sound to a video cam from the aux xlr and getting nothing from 6 .7 .8 but the 1/4 inch ones above it work for recording
Check to ensure the "mode" switches for each of the subgroups (blue switches) are set for FOH mode and NOT monitor mode. Your board is a dual function board and it sounds like some switches may be set differently than others.
Another issue could be the ohm level coming out of the board... it may not be appropriate for your recording device.
@@stageleftaudio checking the cam for it now ty
I tried using the monitor left as right in my studio but it Is playing audio in mono
Monitors are normally mono. If you need a separate left and right (true stereo), that would need to originate from the instrument/vocal input into the console. For true stereo, you would need 2 separate inputs into the console (an input for the left and an input for the right). Then, each input can be routed to a left and right output (as needed). If you are actually in a studio, the console you are connecting to should be able to provide a stereo monitor image.... there's probably no need for a separate dedicated monitor console. The video referenced here is for a dedicated monitor console, which may not work for your situation.
Can you use one of them at church that soundboard
Yes.
A bit long but nice video !
Interesting content, but sooooooo slooooooowly presented and repetitive! I use this board all the time in an educational setting. I need to know how to use the Matrix for a Press Feed send. But tell me quicker, I can take it!
Sometimes, I keep it slow to get a point across. For the matrix, assign any channels for your press feed to one of the subgroups; then on the matrix, choose which matrix channel you want to use for the feed (let's assume #1). Turn the grp-1 knob (this is the sub-group #1 feed) up on the #1 matrix feed. Then, at the bottom of the matrix, turn the red knob up labeled "level" - this is the master level for that matrix channel. That's all there is to it. Make sure the sub-group #1 fader is up so that it will pass a signal. Also, watch the levels of the input on the press feed recorder (or press feed input). It's easy (sometimes) to overdrive the input of some recording devices.
stageleftaudio thank you very much!
stageleftaudio hi hello??
i cant seem to split 2 channels to make it 1 stereo channel (still obviously 2 channels) also my pans dont seem to work. please heeelllppp!
Are you using a digital or analog board? If on an analog board, make sure the assignment switches are set for L/R for PAN use. What are you trying to do with splitting 2 channels into 1... not sure I understand.
stageleftaudio analog, the gl2400 32 channels. i have the left input (track 1) and the right input (track 2) when i pan track 1 hard left it stays mono. same with track 2
Sounds like you are trying to setup a true stereo main output. Make sure the board is set for FOH mode; L/R assignment switch is set for both channels you are using; make sure the channels are NOT being routed to subgroups; you should be using 2 separate output XLR cables (one for main Left output, one for Right main output); and connected to a stereo amplifier; the amplifier you are using should be set to 2-channel (stereo) mode; it should NOT be set to "mono" or "parallel", or "bridged" (depending on the amplifier you have).
stageleftaudio found it out. had to output the main outs into the mixer i planned on selling because of the gl2400 i got early yesterday. using the previous mixer as a distributor and monitor because the monitor outs on the gl2400 is not playing in stereo. not ideal but it will do. thank you!
Glad to hear.
Ops
oh no you didn't!
wish I could like this video multiple times. Thanks so much!
very informative and insightful. All my questions were totally answered. Well done. Thanks so much.
Thank you for your comments! You brought up a good point in your other post about monitor consoles... this needed to be addressed!
