  • Basic look at signal routing for FOH setup (analog board) with processing. From input to output, the signal path is shown.
    There are more complex routing options possible with FOH gear. This video covers a basic setup.
    The video is probably longer than it needs to be, however, if you are new to audio, you may find the information of interest.
    The "trick" to good sound... ensure outboard gear levels are set correctly. If not, noise and/or reduced output may be experienced.

    Correct. Returning effects to their own channels on the board allows for much better control of mixing that effect into the FOH mix.

    The mixer was still set to a stereo mix and sub group mix, the button below the meters must be pressed to see the sub group mix to see the true output.

    A FOH EQ is much faster and easier to use and manage than the EQ in the Drive Rack. Making an EQ adjustment on a FOH EQ takes half a second - whereas on the Drive Rack, it can take several seconds... those seconds add up real fast when trying to set the EQ to correct an issue. However, I use many of the other features in the DR.

    Thanks a lot for the video!!! Great stuff. What kind of cables are you using for EQ insert and why are you using those cables?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  10 лет назад +1

      The cables are special "insert" cables (forgot the manufactured name); they are used to send and return a signal using one cable, instead of two separate cables. Many music stores that sell sound equipment sell these types of cables.

    sir... we have same mixer in our church ... we use aux for sage monitor and mono for main speaker... main speakers sound different from stage monitors

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  8 лет назад +1

      The main speakers should sound different than the monitors, even in mono. The mains should actually sound better than the monitor speakers. Remember... monitor speakers are for monitoring; they will most always sound different. Also, more processing is usually conducted on the main speakers (EQ, compressors, reverb). The monitor speakers should only have an EQ on them and a limiter.

    Why are you using a FOH EQ with a DBX drive rack since the drive rack sets the eq and crossover

    I’m in the learning stages any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m using the Allen and Heath zed 22 fx. ? Is this.... how do i insert an eq from mixer for FOH ? I see a L &R insert just to the left of my mains L & R. Do i use Y cable in inserts ? Then still use main L & R output to amp ? Hope i explained that right.

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  5 лет назад

      To use the "insert" points of your ZED, you will need a special cable designed for inserts. The insert cables look like " Y " cables, but they are not wired like a " Y " cable... they are wired differently. You should be able to go to any music store and ask for an "insert" cable. One side of the insert cable is the SEND, and the other side is for RETURN.
      Yes - you would still use the main outputs of your board to drive the FOH speakers. The insert cables will not impact the functionality of the main FOH outputs - however, make sure the insert cables are connected to their correct input/output on the outboard gear you are connecting to.

    i have a few questions, can you make a video on how you have the cables running from the boards to the rest of the effects in the back of your rack and how it looks back there? also how are you running your effect rack all the way up to your amp racks? are you running them thur the cable snake?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  6 лет назад +1

      We have a video on our channel related to setting up effects; it does go over the the signal routing. The effects, along with other processing is all kept at FOH. The amplifier racks are kept at the stage. Only signals running to the stage are FOH low, mid/high and any monitors.
      Depending on time availability, we may try do a video that shows the entire signal path.

    hi , I would luv to see u guys do a vid on the driverack 260. I am curious as to why the outputs are called channels and not highs, mids and bass. Does that mean I can assign all these 6 channels to either mids or highs or bass if I want too??

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  5 лет назад

      Correct. With the 260, any of the outputs can be assigned to anything. For our larger shows, we use one output for mid/high, one for lows, and another one for lows that manages a cardiod sub configuration. We tried doing a video of the 260 a few years ago, but capturing the LCD screen and function buttons at the same time does not work (the LCD screen is too bright).

    is there any difference between mono and aux signal flow.... because when we put mono channel as our stage monitors ... it sounds different than before and feels energy to sound...

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  8 лет назад +1

      They are the same. A single aux send is mono. However, some consoles can support stereo (2 chnl) mono sends.

    great video, how would add an expander a 3dbx 3bx dynamics expander

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  9 лет назад

      +Francis Wright For live sound, there would be no need to add an expander. Live sound is already dynamic. Though, if you wanted to add an expander, it would probably be placed between the mixing console output and the amplifier input, this would allow expansion of the entire signal. Or it could be placed as an insert for a subgroup or a single channel to provide expansion for specific instrument. The 3dbx is a good unit, though, I think they were designed for playback of recorded music only.

    • @francisdiamond1
      @francisdiamond1 9 лет назад

      Thanks for your quick response. Yes play back music is what i do,not live gig. Am a dj but it sometime hard to get my system playing the way i want it. My signal routing is from my dj mixer to reverb to expander to eq to mixing board to compressor limiter to digital speaker management system to amplifiers to the speakers. Is this the right routing

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  9 лет назад

      +Francis Wright When using live sound equipment, it's not advisable to take a "linear approach" to signal routing like how it sometimes is with DJ equipment. As well, mixing DJ equipment with live sound equipment takes a little more work due to the signal level differences between the equipment. Having too many pieces of gear "in a chain" can cause various impedance issues with the equipment. This can sometimes lead to audio quality issues.
      You could try this... The DJ mixer should be plugged directly into the console... the reverb unit could be plugged into one of the AUX sends on the console; and the output of the reverb unit to return to a channel on the console (then, send the reverb unit a signal from the DJ mixer input from the console). I would recommend using the compressor/limiter in the speaker management system instead of using outboard gear. The EQ should be added to the console by using the FOH insert point (if your board has that option). If you don't have an insert point (as well as the special insert cable), use the EQ in the speaker management system.

    i got a question is your phantom power on all the time

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  10 лет назад

      Yes. Most shows we do utilize a few mics and DI's that require phantom power; it's just easier to leave it on - this makes one less thing to worry/think about when setting up for shows.

    • @djjunior9272
      @djjunior9272 10 лет назад

      so even tho you have bass and guitars, condessor mics. all run with fantom power does anything happen to those signals. do they affect dynamic miss

      mic's

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  10 лет назад

      Unless you are using RIBBON mics or very old dynamic mics, phantom power will not affect the signal.

    Sir, Can i use external EQ with power or active stage monitor??

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  6 лет назад

      Yes. The EQ would be placed in between the auxiliary (AUX) output of the mixer (whatever aux output you are using) and the input of the speaker. This is a very common method of using an EQ on a monitor channel. If the EQ has an output level control, that control should be placed at the -0- mark (or sometimes called a "unity" mark).

    • @mika461983
      @mika461983 8 лет назад

      yeah! if you have few stereo limiters you can place them on each band after the Xover (just like in your driverack). If you have one - place it before.

    How many wedges do you run on a Aux sent

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  10 лет назад

      For us, it depends on the show. Many times, we have 2 to 3 wedges per aux send. It's customary to provide at least 2 returns for monitors.

  • @valcic1993

    Do you try record out?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  3 года назад

      We don't do any type of recording. The sub-groups could have been used as a "record-out" option, however, the recorder would need to be able to handle 1/4" inputs. We do offer feeds from our other consoles for others to use for recording.

      @@stageleftaudio ok, thats mixer its not good for rec out live gig?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  3 года назад

      Correct, it's not good for recording. There are some analog consoles that are good for recording, but many small format consoles (like in this video) are not that good. If you want to do recording direct from a console, most any digital console can do that.

    Would that work for the right side too?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  7 лет назад

      Yes, either channel. The left output is most always recognized as the mono output (even though it could be either L or R).

    • @HectorCapistranFlores
      @HectorCapistranFlores 7 лет назад

      what if I need some of my sound to come out on both. What do I do?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  7 лет назад

      If you need a signal to come out of both outputs, keep the pan knobs for the channels (and sub-groups if you are using them) in the center and the L/R switch (if your board has this) enabled. If you are using subgroups, the channels can still be panned either L or R (assigned to a group) as long as the sub-group assignment switches are used... then, the sub-group pan controls can stay in the center. As long as the pan control is in the center, the signal will be sent to both outputs.

      stageleftaudio hi, enjoying the videos. I'm considering this board for studio use using the main outs and the groups, along with two aux sends to 8 inputs into my audio interface into my DAW. What's your opinion on the board? I've heard the preamps have a clean warm sound and the Eq has a nice vibe. Not sure if the preamps overdrive nicely, but I do have some outboard for that. Quality board in your opinion? Looking for something built nice that will last for years. Thanks for any input. Cheers.
