Talking about generators. What we have used and why we prefer a certain type.

  • A brief overview of generators. There is a tremendous amount of different generators available, therefore, we are only able to talk about the ones we have used (both gasoline and Diesel).
    I do recommend the use of Diesel generators whenever possible; especially for large events.

    It's amazing how much you can achieve within some power constraints. When doing small indoor shows, I can very easily scale things back to running on a single regular UK outlet, which is 13 Amps. Nearly all of my lighting is LED now with the exception of a couple of old Martin Scanners which I'm loathed to part with, and all of my amplification is class D.
    For the bigger shows though, I generally ask for 3 phases at 32Amps per phase, where the load gets distributed among the phases. Even with class D amplification, power draw can be high.
    I very recently went to a show where a brand of generator called NED was showing their generators, and their Hush series of machines are unbelievably quiet...quiet to the point where you had to question whether or not they were running at all.

    This is really nice. although the Honda ones are preferred in the film industry because of their quiet inverter nature. There's Not a lot of difference between diesel and gas apart from fuel it's more that they bigger ones tend to have a lot more sound deadening and sound control and Muffler's. In other words the cheap ones you pick up at Home store are barely put to a frame and sometimes barely even have a muffler they're gonna be loud and sometimes unregulated.
    It certainly has been interesting with the amount of Chinese knock offs of the Honda's coming out recently.

    Id love to be able to run a show on a smaller geni, we usually start with 100kw and depending on lighting requirements that can easily double.

      100kw is a lot! By chance, do those generators reside in 18-wheeler tractor trailer rigs and show up at concerts? We used to require about 30kw for larger shows when we used "big iron", but since moving to Class H and Class D amps, the efficiency is incredible. We request 15kw for us, and around 10kw for lighting (if lighting is needed). The 15kw has worked perfect.

      Definitely trailer mounted, our large shows can easily have 50-60k of dimming. We still have a ton of prerig with 1000w cans.

      Lighting can certainly demand a whole other level of power!

    Why not switch to something like the eco flow delta pro? Have it right on stage and not run hundreds of feet of extension cables and you won’t have voltage sag

      Those devices may not be the right choice of portable power for sound and/or lighting systems. As referenced in the video, we don't provide power for events; that is the responsibility of the organizers/producers of the events. Either generator or utility power needs to be available at an event site.

      For a smaller system it makes sense, I don't think it's going to hit for larger venues systems because the length of run time needed.
      Now I have seen some solar trailer systems which are definitely going to be more frequent in the future I think.
      But there is one limiting factor you have to have enough open space and sun to keep the batteries full and supply load during the day, and enough battery capacity to get through the night.
      And right now large high-efficiency diesel generators are kind of like the perfect package for temporary events.
      However something to be considered.
      some battery power stations have what they call UPS mode which might lend a nice buffer between stage and generator if sharing or even the grid. This is not used that much yet and I think it's another avenue that's going to get adopted soon. as the grid can go down at inconvenient times and generators can run out of gas or diesel or whatever assuming they're not topped up before the show or in cases of multi day shows.
      I personally have all of my digital stuff on a UPS in my rack which leaves only amps and stage stuff that will lose power. But if I was doing a venue where I was really sketched out I would probably put as much as I could stage wise on a secondary UPS and maybe even the amps if it was super critical like a political address. I figure the amps can go off and come back on that's fine they have power Protection but if I keep my digital mixer and wireless microphones and Computer (I use a laptop, built-in battery) running assuming the Internet doesn't go out; I can still be live streaming, recording and right there ready to pick right back up as soon as the amps come up. Or if in an emergency I could load shed non critical amps and plug into the UPS within a minute, if needed to make an emergency public address quickly.

    Thanks! If you dont have a 240v 40A circuit available, how do you combine two 20A circuits?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  9 месяцев назад

      I'm not aware of any way to do that on a generator. It may be better (and safer) to get a generator that provides a 240V service!

    • @imark7777777
      @imark7777777 22 дня назад +1

      You don't actually combine anything. In fact I've had an experience with that going the wrong way.
      You're able to load each circuit to roughly near its max with tolerances etc.
      Theoretically if you took two breakers and slapped them together in parallel you would have a 40 amp breaker BUT you'd have a very unsafe combination. One breaker could trip and the other one could fail and overheat. Are you using 6awg wire on that now 40 amp circuit, you're not oh well now you've just rendered your circuit breaker useless and made your extension cord into a fuse or a long rope heater depending on which way you look at it and how much load.
      I had a food truck that needed 240v sort of (they didn't really but that was what their inlet was set up for and distributed separately, mostly refrigerators no deep fryer). They brought five extension cords. And a special adapter homemade that took 2x20 amp circuits one going to one pin and one going to the other pin of a 4 pin 240V socket. Since they weren't using anything 240v one side was needed to connect for half the circuits and the other side for the other half. Out of the 5 extension cords one of them was miss wired of course the one that got used and as soon as they plugged it in Sparks, tripped breaker, melted outlet. Dead short from hot to neutral through 50 feet of extension cord. I checked everything and fixed everything and got free lunch.
      Now another question would be what if you connect the two hots together well they are out of phase with each other and I don't want to know but it won't be pretty if there's no circuit protection.

    Is in your country every rental company must have their own Generator sir? Or depending on their budget in renting audio system....in my place indonesia, generator is one package with the sound system, so must have it and use it...

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  9 месяцев назад +1

      Good question. Most small companies (like Stage Left Audio), do not provide generators as part of a service. Generators are not needed for every event. If generator power is needed, we provide the names of a few companies where our customers can rent generators from. For the many events we do, there is utility power already available at the event site. Sometimes generator power is needed, but most of the time, a generator is not needed for an event.
