We all acquire hundreds of tools, yet never seem to have exactly what we need.
Have you ever thought of what it would take to completely outfit a shop from scratch? I did that for a company in the 70’s. Spent over $2.5 million on tools and equipment. It was actually hard work spending all that money, ordering all that stuff, inventorying and unboxing all the stuff, getting rid of the packing materials.

    Jeff,
you don’t need to yell…, we are right here. Hahaha..! You eluded to (vaguely), the Western States story a couple years ago, but didn’t get too in-depth about it.
I also recall sometime back, you telling us the story about how the ordering process of the 336, went with their particular “gendered” sales associate(s), specifically regarding the counter weight issue. I suspect that their not wanting to “hitch their trailer” up to “jpaydirt”, might have something to do with it.
Hate to hear the situation with you and that company. It is certainly not just Western States. I know the feeling you have about finding a guy like that, at “Cherry Picker Parts”, that has all the knowledge and know how…, it’s priceless.
    Great video,
    Thank you sir.

I didn't want to be their social media darling, all I wanted was the film the block decking, if they would have actually spoken to me I could of explained that to them, but they instead chose to communicate through others and the phone game never communicates the actual truth after four people repeat the story as they heard it

It's because Cat isnt Cat anymore. They've gone the way of everyone else instead of requiring the best and more of themselves. They went to China and are making the same stuff as everyone else. They're no longer set apart from all the other manufacturers anymore, doesn't matter the brand anymore It's all junk nowadays. It used to be worth paying more for Cat.

One thing about the bigger a business gets it is harder and harder to find anyone who is in charge or capable of making a decision. Back when the guy that owned the place was down the hall it was easy to get decisions and make things happen. Now everything goes thru "channels" those channells are deep and usually swallow everything that goes in and never to be seen again. LOL

Enjoyed the video. I work on some older stuff and your experience and knowledge of things has been helpful. I sympathize with your plight with the CAT dealer. As I am of a similar age and have had many interactions with dealers of different brands, CAT used to be the gold standard. Their folks seemed to be top notch, responsive, knowledgeable and helpful. Parts availability was above anyone else. Factory support was excellent. It seems to me that as the old heads are retiring and exiting the business that same commitment to customers is leaving with them. Now when I call about something and am told "Let me check and I'll get back to you" that it never happens and it is up to you to continually check and check and check again. Getting a call back after hours, well you can forget that. Don't mean to rant but I have noticed a difference over my career. Don't get me wrong, there are still some excellent folks but they are far and few it seems anymore.

Here in Ohio you might find a Galion crane on the back lot of a construction company or junkyard. I think Dresser Industries was the last owner of Galion and like every company they owned it went to pot. Main boom cylinder is polyurethane packing and falls apart when it contacts water
Not that hard to get it out and put a fresh packing in

I've always wondered why they never built an excavator with a separate hydraulic pump in the lower track drive section and then used big slip rings and brushes to transfer electric power from the engine instead of a prone to failure hydraulic swivel valve? Or even direct drive electric motors? Then the motor could have a piggyback generator on the motor. I don't know how it might work out, but like freight trains, it should work I'd think?

Or, is it possible to upgrade your machine to a removable counterweight system like those big machines have? That’s probably expensive, but you end up with a solution…rather than a problem. A quick and easy removal of the thumb may slightly help a little bit???

Just stop dealing with that Western parts. Too much of a headache after the way they done you. I can’t imagine over the years how much money you spent there.
If it was me. I would go back through my company records calculate every year you have been in business how much you spent there. Write up a letter to the CEO of Caterpillar. Tell him about how much you have spent there and how bad they treated you.
