Very interesting. It is neat to learn the fundamentals are good ventilation, no light and a steady temperature at 40 degree F.

How do you deal with warm spells? I.e. We just went from negative 15f on Sunday to 55f today here in Massachusetts USA. How would you deal with higher temps that can't keep the bees cool?

  • @nasjatt

    This is very impressive -
What are the advantages of keeping the bees indoor like this? survival rate? keeping them in one box instead of two? etc
    Wish you all the best

Great setup. A quick question though. With single deep boxes, you don't provide any winter stores for the bees? I run 9 frame single deep brood boxes but we supply them a second 9 frame deep for their winter stores.

They must consume very little I hear long steady cold is better than warm and cold during winter. Less active...less consumption...less poo.

Oooohhh! I get it now! I've been wondering how the hell you insulate a couple thousand beehives for the cold Canadian winter. Easier to just bring them indoors :)

  • @shrekpower

I have a question for you, I'm near Montreal Quebec and I plan to overwinter outside. I was wondering what is your recommendations in regards to the bottom board? Would you use a solid or screened bottom?

  • @so_cal_mom

Fascinating! So they stay in the dark all winter?

  • @shrekpower

Just curious, do you ever lose a complete colony during the winter inside like that? If so, why?

  • @jeffvreeland9992

How do you measure the C/o2 level? Just curious - I have a small shed project, just 4 hives in a temperature controlled insulated compartment. Northern Maine here.

Jeff Vreeland a CO2 detector can be bought off Websites for cheap
      Regulated airflow is important
Bees can handle more CO2 than we comfortably can

Hi Ian, whats the optimum winter temperature for your bees inside the barn, are you looking for a good steady mean average. do you ever have to heat the shed to bring up the temp a little in your coldest months when its about -40 outside. just interested in how you regulate the temp?
    Thanks and very interesting!!

    • @aCanadianBeekeepersBlog

Richard Noel I keep the fans set at 4 degrees Celsius and cool the shed with increased air exchange. I’ve yet to heat the sheds I’ve used.

Would my 5 hives benefit from wintering in an un-insulster, and un-heated wooden 10X12 shed? Flight tube to each hive for warm spells. Would just being out of the wind in up-State NY help lower winter losses.
