Yes, Jonghyun and Kibum sang very much the way they sing now, and Taemin's voice sounded very similar to Jonghyun's because he was still trying to find his style and Jjong was the one helping him with his singing technique.
I think that for everyone, especially new fans, it is difficult to listen to 'Ring Ding Dong' at first, but after a while in the fandom, and listening to the version in concert, you realize how iconic it is and each that you listen to it, you only dance. I highly recommend the 'Ring Ding Dong / Lucifer "live performance.

All 5 of them have great voices..✨ But Jonghyun's voice ~ his high notes and falsetto really stands out...
But got to appreciate the uniqueness that each of them bring to the group that makes them shine as shinee 💎✨

"Juliette" is one of the dozens of songs that was wrote by Jonghyun, and it was SHINee's first song to win the top spot on music shows. You might recognize the melody of the song because it was originally a song covered by the American singer/actor Corbin Bleu called "Deal with It." When SM bought the rights to the song they kept the melody, but Jonghyun rewrote the lyrics. :D As you can see, Jonghyun was writing songs and making his mark almost from the beginning.
And Minho also wrote his rap section in the song. Minho has credits on almost all of SHINee's songs because he writes all his rap parts.
This was also part of the era where SHINee started the trend of the colored skinny jeans. SHINee are known for their "school boy fashion/student look" and everyone started wearing colored skinny jeans at this time because of SHINee. They are even trendsetters when it comes to fashion. Never following trends, but always creating them in everything they do. :D It is safe to say that the original trend of colored skinny jeans in the west was probably a transplant from the trend that SHINee started. A lot of foreign idols over the years have told SHINee that the fashion trends they started in Korea were adopted by them in the U.S., Canada, China, Thailand, etc. That's how influential SHINee are.
The glasses and masks they are wearing in this MV are crazy because they are supposed to be attending a sort of trendy version of a masquerade event like when Romeo and Juliet secretly meet each other at Juliet's family's costume masquerade ball. The SHINee boys are all supposed to be Romeo and they are searching for their Juliette (Who is played by Krystal from F(X), SHINee's sister group).
As you discovered, Jonghyun is known for his Michael Jackson-like vocals. That's just Jonghyun's classic high note style. Jonghyun is known for his MJ style cry and for sounding a little like Michael when he sings any of SHINee's classic R&B songs. Taemin is the one that dances like MJ, but it's Jonghyun that is the one that sounds like him. During "Juliette" (and "Amigo"), Taemin was still growing into his voice, so he doesn't really have a whole lot of lines in the song, so instead they highlighted more of his dance skills.
"Juliette" came out in 2009 (promoted alongside "Amigo" which was their repackaged album single), so Taemin was a year older than in "Replay" -- he was almost 16 years old here. Minho is 17 years old here. Key is also 17. Onew was 19 and Jonghyun had just turned 19.
As with all of SHINee's MVs, if you really want to see their dancing, you have to check out their performance version MV -- which is designed to highlight the choreography -- or better yet, a live performance. Plus, there is nothing better than SHINee live. Check out their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) performance of "Juliette" (and "Amigo") from 2016. ruclips.net/video/81qtwuWjYog/видео.html
Fun fact: In 2011, as part of their Japanese debut, they also came out with a Japanese version of "Juliette".

13 years since I know them... and I became hardcore when Juliette dropped. Obsessed by Lucifer. I remember waiting for Lucifer to drop and then making my mom listen to it. Made my sister go to SM Town in Madison Square Garden in 2012 (she was near) just so she could film some footage of them, especially Taemin (I was a Blinger from Replay, but switched to Taemint around Lucifer era... so 2010). I finally jumped the gun and went all the way to Korea to watch SHINee world concert III, first time. Seen them a few times since then haha.

Jonghyun was definitely way ahead of everyone in the beginning vocally while the others improved a ton throughout the years, not saying that he didn't improve either but he was just that amazing since debut carrying most of the songs in both line distribution and high notes that the other members still haven't been able to catch up to even with him absent on the last couple albums (there's a video of all of their song lines time combined on YT and he's still got a pretty significant lead). I wasn't feeling RDD at first but then it grew on me a lot and I think it's a similar case for many people. I especially like their more rock-like approach of it that they did together with Lucifer, that performance is a must see. Next is the Lucifer era, I guess you could also include Hello (the repackaged title track) and maybe some B sides? My picks would be Obsession - another song that Jjong wrote and Quasimodo a strong and emotional ballad (vocals slay) there's also a very good live performance for it.

    • @hiddlespearean
      @hiddlespearean 3 года назад +3

So so true.. Jonghyun and key were pretty much seasoned trainee material when they were signed. The others needed training and honestly Onew only truly began to flex his vocals once he had the surgery and after Jjong was gone, prior to that he served primarily as their strong stable scaffold for low and high vocals while Jjong did the front man vocal acrobatics. Pretty much how he led as well, Jjong front and Centre, jinki all around support and strength. Vocal coaches often comment that jinki skill was pretty and pure tone precise control while Jjong's was in soaring roaring emotive performance as was Key I think.

As I'm not a fan of kpop, but of Dramas, I usually listen to Osts of dramas if I like and I look for the singer or group, the first time I heard them was at BOF with Stand By Me and I really liked the music but all the music in this drama it was amazing and I didn't really knew who SHINee was, but months later my daughter who is a kpop fan and her Bias is Minho showed me a drama with him, to be honest Minho's acting skills at that time didn't catch my attention but I was in love with a particular song *In your eyes* and my daughter told me that the singer was in the same group as the actor and that I already liked their music on BOF, and the first time I looked it up on YT They had so many songs to choose from and I chose Symptoms and fell in love with the first voice, at that time I knew 2 names and a face Onew and Minho and I asked who he was, I remember my daughter asking me if I knew it wasn't Onew and I replied No, both voices are amazing, but very different, and the second voice came out and I said it was Onew she smiled and said yes and his first was Jonghyun, and for me it all started like that, I liked Key's voice in that song too and that was in 2014 in 2 days will be 7 years, II'm not a Baby Shawol or Old Shawol, Today I have all Their albums, both Korean and Japanese and of course the solos as well not all solos, Taemin released to many my poor wallet kkkkk When I visited Korea I was lucky to buy what didn't have yet from Jonghyun including the SM ballads and his book, I am still not a Kpop fan I only Love SHINee I like some singers and 1 or 2 groups because of the Osts but Only SHINee made a difference

Ring Ding Dong is definitely a song that grows on you. It's so cheesy, but such a catchy earworm that once you've heard the chorus a few time in a row, there's no going back, it's stuck forever.
Taemin making really serious faces is because he hated being called cute and being categorized as "the cute maknae" but all the other members agree that doing things like that just made him even cuter 😂
Also I'm glad you saw JoJo! I wish we had a music video for that one!
And I'm forever in love with Key's christmas tree hair in the last performance video you watched, it's adorable

I was originally an ELF (SuJu fandom), and when I first listened to SHINee (their Replay debut) I was intrigued, but Love Like Oxygen definitely sealed the deal for me!
In the beginning, Jonghyun clearly was way ahead vocally than the rest. They were actually supposed to debut as a rap group since SM said their voices weren't really that good (yet), but since they didn't really have the rapper swag and flow they debuted as they are. Taemin didn't have solo vocal lines during debut since he was 14 so his voice was still developing, and they said that he didn't sing well enough, his voice may sound similar to Jjong early on since he (and Onew) were the ones mentoring him extra to train his vocals.
Their progression in engancing their talents and skill is what really amazes me! Every album you can definitely see exponential growth!! Their passion is just ❤️

In 2011, I watched a K-drama called Boys Over Flowers. My favorite song from the soundtrack (OST) was Stand By Me, by a group called SHINee. My first time seeing a video was when my daughter showed me a group she was "discovering". It was Lucifer! Hooked for life!
SHINee also did a lot of SNL Korea segments, a reality named "Hello Baby", and some hilarious sketches for SHINee World. Watched them all.

Starting my 10th year with SHINee this year? I think? Juliette was written by Jonghyun, and if I recall rightly was one of the first idol-written songs to win an award? SM is notoriously difficult when it comes to idol written songs being chosen. Seriously, it's a huge thing that Jonghyun wrote so many - actually, that SHINee as a whole have a lot of writing credits. (Jonghyun and Minho have the most in SHINee). Jonghyun & Onew were trying to sound like MJ at the start, a form of homage.
My favorite mic moments are: Onew singing into the wrong end on stage, realizing it and bursting into laughter while running over to show Jonghyun, all while they're supposed to be singing "live", Onew losing his grip on the mic and flipping it into the air, then almost falling while trying to catch it, Taemin failing to grab the mic from Key during Replay, and of course the famous Dream Girl incident where Minho's mic stand falls apart *and no one but a sharp-eyed shawol* noticed.
I just don't like JoJo. It's repetitive and kind of boring.
I LOVE JJONG'S RDD HAIR AND NO ONE CAN STOP ME. LASAGNA JJONG FOREVER~! Kim Kibum, 10 years later: "What does fantastic elastic even mean?!" Minho hated his hair.

I first discovered them in 2018 when I watched the mv for Ring Ding Dong, which I loved at the time and still do. However, at that time I didn't really dig any deeper into ShiNee. I was still new to kpop, being introduced to BTS by a coworker. So at that time it was all about BTS. That changed in 2020. While watching reaction videos, I discovered Taemin. He very quickly became my ult bias and of course then I had to learn more about ShiNee and SuperM. They've been my ult group for about a year now, and that's not likely to ever change. Btw, ShiNee, in my opinion, has no bad songs. My favorites are: Obsession, A-yo, Who Waits For Love, and Good Evening.

I've been with SHINee since SM dropped their profiles online with literally no warning or hype about 2 days before their debut. 😅 At the time Dong Bang Shin Ki were THE K-pop group, and everyone was excited for a new 5 member SM boy group, but taken back by how they were all absolute babies and that was pretty much all we knew about them. When Replay dropped and was so good (and then when they sang live on music shows, that just didn't happen at the time!) K-fandom was SHOOK. Honestly, watching them all grow up but especially Taemin and Minho has been such a ride.
Reaction to Ring Ding Dong was very similar to yours. Even at the time when autotune was big, everyone was like, "but why autotune SHINee? They don't need it." 🤣 And day 1 everyone was like wtf are these lyrics, day 2 everyone was screaming, "SO FANTASTIC, ELASTIC," it was a total meme hahahahaha.

I was also following TVXQ and Super Junior at the time and remember when SM surprised us with the announcement of their new boy group SHINee. I was excited for a new group from SM, but they seemed so young at the time. Unlike the other groups that SM had debuted prior to that. But I am so glad I started following them from the very beginning because there really was or is nothing like SHINee out there and even after more than 13 years they continue to stay just as fresh and new as they were from day one. :D

I stumbled across K-Pop back in the day because a torrent I'd downloaded had snuck BoA's newly released 'Listen to Your Heart' album into it, and from there I was able to go BoA to TRAX to Shinhwa, Rain, and eventually DBSK and SuJu by digging through torrents and LiveJournal posts. Thank god new fans can just go to RUclips these days hahahahaha.

@@raerae734 I know, I remember all those videos where people recorded the TV show while they watched with their video camera and you could hear their family in the background the whole time. LOL I got into Kpop after a friend showed me a K-drama during my last year of college and it kind of just snowballed from there. I am so thankful for streaming sites like Netflix where you can watch all kinds of K content and you don't have to feel like you're surfing on the black market looking for someone's grainy video of a TV show and hoping you can find the whole episode and are able to see and hear it well enough to follow what's happening. K fans today are so lucky to have subs. I would often watch things without subs and just grasp bits and piece of what was happening and was happy just to get that much. It always makes me laugh when people get upset that a video doesn't have subs. They are just way too spoiled LOL.

I have been officially following SHINee since 2012 so it's been a fun ride 😁 They've experimented with a lot of musical genres over the years and I find that aspect of their music to be the most enjoyable. I do love their early era stuff a lot just as much as I love their current stuff. The thing for me is that SHINee has consistently remained true to themselves while still putting out music to wow the masses. I'll ALWAYS love them 💜💜💜

Since 2009 I thought of Ring Ding Dong as a weird song, but the members admit that song helped them A LOT like everyone knew them after Ring Ding Dong. And still unsure especially the cola cola part 😂 But of course the live version redeemed it since we can hear their voices without all the autotunes. And judging by how it's trending in TikTok even in 2021, there's no escaping it 😂

I discovered SHINee in 2009 due to the Boys Over Flowers OST Stand By Me. Became a shawol that year as well due to Ring Ding Dong lol!
Yes, I love Ring Ding Dong from the start. Jonghyun's iconic Baby at the start got me.. and the choreo. Plus this was the song during their show Hello Baby that's why I really love it. And when I saw the live performance from SHINee World 5 (RDD + Lucifer remix which I hope you'll watch too) i was really blown away. But for new people just discovering SHINee I really wouldn't suggest RDD as their first song to listen to as it's not something most people would like immediately given the autotune.
Btw - Juliette was written by Jonghyun. I also like Jojo, i found them so cute while performing it in their SHINee World 4 concert.

I still remember loving RDD at first view/listen and a few days later got a big screen monitor to view them in 1080p for the first time! 😅 Ahhh the joy they bring! Jojo took a bit more listens before I got into it. Juliette sounded fresh. Get down was something I didn't expect to like. I hated rap music back then coz I find it hard to understand because they mouth the words too fast. But with Shinee and not understanding Korean made it easy to just enjoy the music and ignore the lyrics. 😆. About Jonghyun's vocals, he's ahead of his time definitely. I remember him being so good that when he was unwell to perform live, SM put Yesung from Super Junior to cover his part. Man, I was so mad about it. I'd rather Onew or Key take over, than a member from another group to do it. It was such an insult, I feel. Don't get me wrong, Yesung is my bias in SuJu. Anyway, glad that all members are vocalists in their own right now. They've grown a lot as artists.
