I went to the Lush store and the sales person gave me a tip for the best way to use the hair conditioner bar. She said to cut the bar in half, then use from the middle of the bar and work your way out over time. There is a hard cover on the outside of the bar to protect it, so this method allows you to get to the softer inside while maintaining the outer shell longer. She said the bar should last longer and it will condition your hair better!
I'm not sure what has changed in the past 7 years, but you're spot on with the liquids thing. I was with the TSA for 11.5 years and, unfortunately, some of us interpreted the S.O.P. differently. I always let toothpaste and peanut butter go through because OF COURSE they would hold their shape outside of the container. I don't remember what the plastic bag size was when I was there, but as many under 3.4 liquids as one can "comfortably" fit into a bag was fine. This is key for people who want to take booze in their carry-on. Be careful drinking them on the plane though because the airline may frown upon you not buying their cocktails. Finally, yes. As stupid as it sounds, it's not the amount of liquid, it's the size of the container. If there is a 4oz. container with only 1oz. of liquid it can't go on the plane. Ridiculous of course, but that's the way it works. Don't even get me started on the ice thing. Let's just say that I had many arguments with co-workers and supervisors over the years.
@@Andy_Pandy2000 It falls into the powder category, not liquid. Salt gets examined in checked-in baggage constantly. Simply put, it alarms the CTX machine, the x-ray image is sent to the TSA screener and that screener has about 8 seconds to decide whether to send the bag to the the room where the “threat” of the salt will be tested. After testing, it will be cleared and sent on its way to the plane. The amount is key, as a salt shaker amount would probably not be enough to alarm the machine. In carry-on luggage, if the container holding the salt is more than 3.4 ounces it’s not supposed to be let on the plane per S.O.P. It may make little sense, but TSA personnel work under the cloud of getting in trouble ALL THE TIME from their superiors. Because of this, the salt stands little chance of getting on the plane. Trust me, lots of these rules are eye rolling to the TSA screeners as well.
Love all your tips about swapping liquids for solids. I'm definitely going to check out the hair wax you showed. My tip is for getting around liquids. I tried this on my last trip & it worked. I love Korean sheet masks that come in single-use pouches. I packed a few with my dry toiletries & they went through TSA just fine. If you squish all the excess liquid down to the bottom of the packet before you take the mask out, you can get about a week to 10 days worth of serum/moisturizer out of the leftovers. Most people just waste it by throwing the packet away or using it all up for one mask session. You can just fold the packets down a few times & close them with paperclips. They're flat & don't take up much space in your toiletry bag. Some of the cheap formulas I've tried are much better than high-end serums.
Take your fav moisturizer , hair cond, face toner, etc take a sponge and cut into pieces or use cotton eye pads , soak your product in them and label and store in seperate snack size zip lock bags.TSA has never questioned or taken them .
We are flying to Paris and then to the north of Spain and then Barcelona…Love using just carry on , especially when we are travelling by trains , so much easier…I’m always a little stressed when going through TSA with my liquids but now I have bought so many solids …shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, sunscreen, moisturizer, lipbalm, toothpaste tablets… And now I look at my TSA 1 L liquid bag and it’s half empty. 😊This feels so good! I pick up a tip every time I watch your informative and cute videos ! Thanks and Greetings from Canada🇨🇦
My tip: Similar to when bagging groceries, keep the "edibles" separate from the non-edibles. Place toothpaste and such in one bag. Place shampoo and such a separate bag. Then place BOTH bags inside your one-quart Zip-Loc. That way, if containers explode, and contents mix, you won't be eating shampoo when you brush your teeth.
Dry shampoo in powder instead of aerosol form, 2 in 1 stick products like those lip and cheek sticks or those concealer/highlighter sticks helps as well, and soaking a couple of those cotton pads in micellar water (squeezing and putting in a small sealed container - they stay wet/moist for at least a few days this way!) helps lessen liquids too!
It occurs to me and is reinforced with each of your videos that effective communication is truly the essential ingredient that causes me anticipate your next video. The sticky, stinky season of itchy irritation is almost upon us.Wasn't aware of those nonliquid options.Tigerbalm (for insect bites and third eye refresher) and sandalwood incense( to defunk musty, dank budget boudoirs) are only a Latterday Hippie's nostalgia, alas(or at last?).As always, you inspire with sound knowledge and soaring experience.I remain an unabashed fan!!!
I use eye contact containers when traveling, for liquid makeup, serums moisturizer, cleansers, sunscreen to carry in my purse; lots of different stuff, then I label the back and I am good to go for about a week. I also use GEMZ solid-ish individual conditioner and shampoo. You can get a variety and choose what your hair needs for the day. I also really like the deodorant sachets from Little Seed Farm. One packet will last me several days, its great stuff! Happy Travels!
I ised to use contact containers. Lately, I feel they are getting bigger. I’d prefer the left and right are not connected. They used to have them in the old days. I need to look again.
The Burt's Bees Miracle Balm and their Hydrating Stick are pretty good moisturizer options. Another is to buy a raw (organic) shea butter bar and cut to size you want to take (they usually come in 8 ounce bars) and keep in a small container. I've found to get close to liquid/cream moisturizer effectiveness, you need to go with ingredients in liquid/cream moisturizers.
I've tried a lot of hair conditioner bars and ultimately found that The Earthling Co has a really good one. A lot of brands do sell trial sizes or sampler sets, which are great not only to try out a bunch of things, but also to travel with! My favorites have been Lush's shampoo bar, and The Earthling Co conditioner bar, although Ethique is also good and they sell nice sample sets.
Lovely video! I am also on the solid toiletries hunt. I have come across La Roche-Posay stick AP+. It is labeled as an anti itch stick but it is a wonderful moisturizer that I also keep in my purse. For sunscreen I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Korean brand Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick. I put it all over and also keep it with me at all times. Love your content! New subscriber!
Totally agree about crystal salt deodorant-one of my best travel hacks-it’s effective, lasts forever and doesn’t cause streaks. For face, I use Olay (or similar brand) facial cleansing cloths, each cut in half-I don’t usually like disposable items but they work great for my sensitive skin, aren’t a liquid, and disappear (reducing my load) over the course of a trip. Trader Joe’s has a nice balm in a tin that I use for facial moisturizer before sunscreen (so far, no one has called it a liquid).
You're not the first person to mention the Olay wipes, and I must admit it's nice to have the extra space at the end of a trip since I usually like to bring a little something back.
Wow, thanks I had no idea what is available as solid toiletries. I don't mind flying so much as I detest airports and the attendant hassle. I'm an old guy, I remember when airliners had propellers and by God piston engines. Have you ever seen a Lockheed Constellation, beautiful.
Twin Otter if you want to go low, slow, and noisy! A few remote operators used them for sced flights when I lived up North. They had their own terminal, so security wasn't an issue at that time and place.
Thank you! Great breakdown with a great, animated, captivating presentation. Do not ever chsnge that! The whole time I was thinking “wow, she’d be an anazing, fun teacher” lol. Especially your toothpaste tab moment. 😬. And you are gorgeous!
I slice my shampoo/conditioner and soap bars into 1 inch pieces to use even less space. Vitamin E capsules are a great moisturizer. They are single use and a TSA solid! In a pinch, the Neutrogena sunscreen stick works as a moisturizer cream. I've used powder sunscreen in my hairline and part. Not as heavy duty as dry shampoo but will extend your wash.
So with you on the solid skin moisturizer. Have never found one that works properly to moisturize the body. Gave up last week and simply bought a skin moisturizer lotion in Brazil. I will say the solid moisturizer did work well on my hands in flight in that super drying air. Thanks for the vids keep ‘em coming Nora!
Coconut oil can be used much like you described for your hair wax. It is liquid in hot weather so cold weather or freezer before you leave. It is also a moisturizer, hand lotion, lip balm etc so multiple uses for one item! For the crystal deodorant don’t wet it as directed. Instead put it on while still wet from the shower and it will last 2-3X longer. It’s been my go to for years and using it while still wet is a much better path!
Instead of face cleanser (or body cleanser for that matter) I love the Norwex face and body cloths. They are impregnated with silver which has antimicrobial properties, they dry quickly, and I no longer use soap on my skin
Fascinating! I must look these up! So...you just wet them and wipe your skin and it cleans, then you rinse the cloth and let it dry so you can reuse it?
@@NoraDunn yes. After use, they recommend rinsing it in real warm tap water before squeezing out the water and hanging to dry. I never you facial cleanser or body wash/soap anymore.
Thanks for the great suggestions. I found that the Container Store has 1oz plastic bottles that are fantastic. They’re maybe $2 each and I use them for hair products, skincare, and body wash. As long as I make sure they’re closed properly, I haven’t had one leak yet.
I started test driving solid shampoo and conditioner bars before a European trip. I discovered Viva La Body made in Darwin NT. It is hands down the best shampoo and conditioner I have ever used and have been using it now for 3 years. They also have a solid cleanser and deodorant bars. Their products are top quality.
The solid moisturizer for traveling (and non traveling) I use is a 1 oz 100% cocoa butter (“The yellow stick from Cococare). It is solid but when applying on your face, lips or body melts and it works good for me as moisturizer. And smells like chocolate!
I've never had good results with hair products from Lush. I use the solid shampoo and conditioner bars from Kitsch. Their formulas for different hair needs are SO MUCH BETTER than any other solid hair care products I've found anywhere else.
I just used my Nora code on my first Kitsch order too! After 2 week in UK and Ireland I'm excited to consolidate my liquids more. The Lush products always had too much smell for me, so I"m very hopeful for the Kitsch bars.
For solid moisturizer / lotion ... look into what's called "lotion bars". And read the ingredients list. One of my hobbies is cosmetic formulation. Most of the things I make are liquid, though I make a great shampoo bar and want to try conditioner bars and emulsified lotion bars. You can try a conditioner bar on wet skin as a lotion (hair conditioner is a type of lotion), or look at the ingredient list for emulsifiers and water-based ingredients. There are also "rinse off" emulsified lotion bars - these have an emulsifier so they ... rinse off. 😀USe these at the end of your shower, rub the bar on your skin, then rinse in the shower to turn it into lotion and rub gently to distribute. How can you tell if an ingredient is an emulsifier? There are different ingredient dictionaries out there ... I can't get to the links right now. One warning ... EWG bases their good or bad ingredients on which manufacturer pays them for their listings. EWG is not to be trusted. [I won't go into a full rant here.]
Great info - thanks! I personally don't like the rinse-off lotion bars, since I then dry my skin, and even though I just "pat" dry with a towel, I feel like it then leaves me both damp AND poorly moisturized - ha ha!
As far as solid moisturisers go try Ethique. They make both a light and medium weight moisturiser as well as a serum/moisturiser combined which is slightly heavier and great for winter and dryer skin.
Individual wipes in anything… deodorant, moisturizer, make up remover, perfume, hand wipe, disinfectant, hand sterilizer, and more will get through TSA.
I use most of the solid alternatives you suggested. I haven't found a good solid moisturizing bar that works for my sensitive and oily skin but I did find a solid hand lotion called butter bits. You take out a bit, warm it up in your hands then spread it around. I put them in a small plastic jar and keep it in my personal bag, no more small bottle of hand cream in your liquids! I also don't use liquid makeup items, I have mature skin and use an all cream, but not oil, 3D makeup system that all fits into one palette. All I take besides that is my primer/finishing spray, mascara and 4 small brushes. The makeup and palette are tsa approved and do not count as liquids. For cleanser I take Olay face clothes, they work great for cleansing and removing makeup and weight nothing.
I use strong antiperspirant wipes from Zero Sweat because deodorant won't cut it for me. (At home I was already using Certain Dri roll-on which is the same chemical and available in local stores. Both brands are cruelty-free and vegan. Certain Dri also makes other antiperspirant/deodorant products, some solid, which are good and gentler.) Zero Sweat comes in little pouches, like wet wipes, and I use one a few times (more frequently than the "up to 7 days" they claim they can last) putting it back in its wrapper and then tightly sealing in ziplock bags between uses. I've only found them online. Once, the site I ordered through only sent one box when I ordered two, but when I found a way to contact the Zero Sweat people themselves they were very helpful, polite, and immediately rectified the problem.
Great ideas for things I've never thought about. Thank you for putting this video together. The one thing that I was thinking throughout the whole video though is my goodness I am glad I'm a guy. I don't need 3/4 of what you were describing and I'm so happy. I was exhausted looking at all the different things you have to consider bringing if you're a female (not making fun, these are necessary items for many).
I put a bunch of cotton pads in a resealable zip bag, Then saturate them with witch hazel. Just don’t have too much so that you can see the liquid. Also works for micellar water. Then, doesn’t count as a liquid
I use Nelson's Naturals toothpaste. I just checked and I see that they also make tablets. For travel, I carry some in a contact case as it only takes a small amount for each brush. They come in 3.3 oz. jars but they are heavy. It's not lost on me that I'm taking something out of zero waste packaging and putting it into plastic but at least it's not single use. I got TSA pre-check before I started traveling with this so I haven't confirmed that it counts as a liquid but it's easy enough to slip a contact case into a liquids bag.
LuSa Organics, a small, family-run natural products company in Viroqua, Wisconsin, has a solid tooth soap I have come to love. It does NOT have that "minty-fresh" feeling, and you DO have to acclimate a bit to the taste (which is, let's admit, a little...soap-y....), but it can't be beat for long-term travel minimalism. I warm up small pieces of this stuff and smoosh it into a 1/20 oz. (yes, that's .05 oz.) cosmetic sampler container; it lasts me a month and a half, brushing twice daily. You just moisten the toothbrush and rub it briefly over the tooth soap; a little goes a long way!
Thanks for the suggestion! May I, in turn, suggest you try some other solid toothpaste that tastes good?? They do exist. ;-) (Though I also like to support small family-run businesses, so there's that).
@@NoraDunn Thanks for the reply! I’ve actually tried the Lush tablets & other (even smaller) tooth tabs; they were ok, but I LOVE the even greater compactness/minimalism of this product, and have gotten accustomed to the taste - they do add some tangerine and mint oils, which prevents it from tasting *only* like soap (and it is much more affordable than the tablets, considering how long it lasts). :-)
Lush shampoo bars are great and last a long time IF you keep them dry. I keep them in tiny organza drawstring bags so they can hang and dry. I actually just leave them in and the bag acts like one of those poofs that create more lather. More importantly, it solves the problem that many Lush shampoo bars can shed chunky ingredients and/or crumble eventually. For their conditioner bars, I take them out of their bags to use. I actually use a larger organza bag for all my shower toiletries, including the ones in individual bags. If you can find a mesh bag the right size, it would probably last longer (cheap organza bags/pouches aren't very durable) but cost more and look less pretty (I like the variety and price of organza bags available). The worst way to store solid shampoo bars is in the aluminum tins Lush sells for the purpose. Those tins are wonderful for many purposes and I highly recommend them, just not for solid shampoo! They are much better than steel tins if they might get wet, and they weigh less. I'm surprised Lush doesn't sell little bags for the purpose (would expect organic cotton or recycled polyester mesh instead of organza). They've introduced containers made of cork, but those seem to have a lot of problems according to reviews; I wouldn't think cork would work well in shower conditions.
I recently discovered some absolute magic bags for soap/solid shampoo/etc that are waterproof (great if you need to shower then pack before the soap/etc can dry) AND the bag dries out the soap! I left a link in the video description. And they're nice and light. I'm a convert from the Lush tins.
I’ve been also using these bags, and they are great! The one I have has a suction cup so it also solves the problem of putting the soap somewhere if the shower doesn’t have a rack.
Try Lush's King of Skin for a solid body lotion. I used it for years and about 5 years ago, they discontinued it. But they brought it back a few months ago. It is only in the bigger shops, but available online. It is colorless, unperfumed, and you rub it on in the shower before getting out. Do not use it outside the shower--it will be way too oily! A bar lasts me about two weeks of daily use, but better than a heavy tube or jar of body lotion.
I'm glad you like their shower bars/oils! I'm not personally a fan; partly because it can make the shower slippery, and partly because I don't find them quite moisturizing enough.
Just a heads up for anyone flying out of Heathrow London, recently had to remove liquids from quart size bag and use theirs, it was much smaller, wouldn’t fit all my items, had to dispose of some 😕…another lesson learned, the quart size bag, might be best to not fill it full as in the UK it was not the same size as what they had!
Love you tips! London Gatwick airport last week... had to open my carry-on because solid deodorant (Secret brand, small travel size) "shows up on the scanner as a liquid." Good grief. So their security sophistication level for scanning seems to be regressing. Of course, I got to keep my solid deodorant, but I will put it in a more convenient-to-open suitcase next time.
Just flew back from Buenos Aires, AR. I filled my own metal water bottle in the starbucks across my gate with hot water but am of the Delta agent poured out my water before allowing me boarding the plane. Yes, security rules can be various every where.
Great tips about bars & and how best to use them! What about mascara or wet eyeliner? Liquids or not? I always assume liquid so it goes in my 311 bag. Any intel? And for facial makeup, foundation or coverup, if used, do you suggest mineral- powder type to brush on, too? Stick makeup ("pancake," like in theater) is too heavy & oily for my skin.
I don't ever put mascara into my liquids bag, but I suppose it could be considered a liquid. I've never had a problem. As for foundation/coverup I have a small bottle of "bb" or "cc" cream or similar, but in truth I rarely wear it unless I'm filming a video or speaking on stage. I do have - and love - Subtl Beauty for their travel-friendly stackable customized makeup kits, and it includes bronzer, blush, and coverup.
Nora thanks for all the tips! Here is one for you Viori shampoo and conditioner bars they work great and smell heavenly. They also support tribal women.
Nice! I'm also a fan of KITSCH, woman owned, sustainable company. Use bit.ly/3oZ7Gbs and my code NORA to get 25% off your first order. Shipping in the US and internationally.
The bags used at EU and UK airports are 20cm x 20cm. They are smaller than those allowed at US airports. If you place your containers horizontally in the bag, you should be able to get more in!
If you’re in the US near a Trader Joe’s market, they have a solid shampoo-bar that I bought this weekend. It lathered quite easily and my albeit short hair felt squeaky clean I still felt like i needed a touch of conditioner so I’ll need to try one out. I think the TJs bar was $4? Thanks for all the tips!
For conditioner bars, I am currently using and loving Kitsch - amzn.to/3IWl3zR In this video I'm holding a Lush pressed conditioner bar which isn't nearly as good as the Kitsch one I'm using now. Highly recommend!
Love your tips Nora.… I’m definitely going to try the shampoo/conditioner bars! If I may add a tip: I’m blonde, so I use baby powder/cornstarch (not talc) as a dry shampoo. (They can come in travel size too). I use very little for my in between shampoo days. I chalk my hands and apply, meaning I sprinkle a little powder on one hand, transfer the loose powder to the other and use the hand with the powder residue to gently work through my roots. Then I swap hands and do it with the other side until I don’t have any powder left. Then I brush my hair out. Much better than those dry shampoo sprays which are sticky and a little toxic imo. (And the travel size doesn’t last very long).
On a recent trip to Munich, I discovered that my liquid foundation makeup had leaked in the ziplock bag, and made a mess. 😕 However, good news ensued! In Marienplatz, we discovered a Lush store, and they have a solid foundation that isn't sold in US Lush stores. The next time I go to Europe, I'm going to seek out another Lush store, and buy a couple more of those.
Hi Nora, I love your videos and feel grateful for your mentoring. I'm wondering about small 1 or 2 oz glass-bottle herbal tinctures or tiny glass-bottles of essential oils? Are they generally allowed on international flights?
I second the issues with lotion bars. So many of them just end up feeling like an oily film on top of skin that still feels dry. And I've tried a *bunch*.
I found a recipe for solid lotion on Pinterest. It lasts a long time. All of these solid toiletries save on plastics. I also use solid shampoo or ordinary hotel soap on my face and moisturizer samples on trips.
MUST have my roll on deodorant- push a metal nail file next to the ball, twist, pour into a funnel to a tiny bottle. Easy to pour on a couple drops and spread around.
Roll-on deodorant is a liquid, though good on you for using a small bottle and refilling! Wouldn't do me much good on a 3-month carry-on only trip though ;-)
Coola makes a mini spray sunscreen that I think is 3oz. I use it and the stick and powder. I really believe in SPF. Or, just buy some sunscreen when you get to any tropical destination.
That's always another solution: buying sunscreen. Gotta be careful in certain places however, for example in many Asian countries, whitening agents are added, which I'm not a fan of.
Thanks! I'm not sure about 100g......it must be 100ml or less. The weight is irrelevant. And even though it's solid, you COULD be told it's a liquid, so I'd keep it within the 3-1-1- limits.
I travelled domestically a few weeks ago in Australia and they didn’t seem to worry about water bottles at security. We didn’t even need to have the baggie either.
Not necessarily. Lots of larger liquids like bottles of wine and booze alarm the CTX machines and they have to be checked and cleared by hand. After being checked they are good to go unless they are more than 80 proof.
What about samples? I have a lot of sample shampoos, makeup products that companies give you when you place an order. Are they okay to put in your liquids bag? I have the Jane Iredale powder sunscreen so thanks to your video I know where to put it.Thank you
Hi Ana, great question! I was in touch with the founders who have a few projects on the go; they're redesigning and rebranding their company and plan to relaunch, but it may not be until next year! In the meantime, I don't have a truly comparable alternative; compressible packing cubes work....
Does anyone know of any non-liquid tooth"paste" with fluoride? I have Lush toothy tabs and have seen tooth powders at co-ops, but would never use them long term because my teeth need fluoride, and that I have not found in non-liquid. (also needs to be cruelty free for me) I love Tom's of Maine toothpaste and used to be able to find it in sample/travel size but not for years... may have to fill my own container, but prefer using the original tube for toothpaste...
Have tiny containers that I use some for face creams, when traveling with carryon for a few days will quirt toothpaste the number of days, have now realise I don't use that much toothpaste.
I don't have trouble with supplements. I even "decant" them into ziploc bags to save space (and I put the label from the supplement bottle in the bag too so I - and anybody else - can identify them), even though some people say that increases the risk of them being taken/scrutinized. I've never had a problem though.
Hi Nora, would you please list the specific brand names of the products (for example, the toothpaste tabs, salt deodorant, face cleanser, and especially your "future" sunscreen powder)?! When I click on any of your links, amazon has multiple products and I have no clue which one(s) you have recommended in the video(s)! Thank you
@@NoraDunn I'm in Canada. It's happened with every link. Would you mind sharing the brand names of the toothpaste tabs, sunscreen powder and salt deodorant please? Thank you 🤗
@@user-cw1fz3ur8b Deodorant: I've used the following brands - Thai, Crystal (the trick is to get the small travel size). Toothpaste: I've used Lush Toothy Tabs, and a brand only available in the US. Sunscreen Powder: The brand I got was on sale at Costco a few years ago. But seriously for all of these, just search on Amazon and choose what looks good!
A good tip is never take anything halfway across the planet that you can get easily on from any local store on arrival at your destination, buy small quantities, no more than you need for your stay & leave any leftovers for the maids as a tip rather than taking back home with you or on to your next destination.
Ooh good question! I believe you can pack full-sized aerosols in your checked luggage, as long as they have some sort of cap to protect it from being dispensed. As usual, best to check the airline's website to confirm.
Jackie here. What annoys me is when at our local airport we have seen people buying perfumes in the duty free to have them taken off them when boarding and put into the confiscated goods bin. I know this doesn't happen everywhere so i am thinking there was a scam going on amongst some of the staff.
Love the breads, varied snack foods. And local candy or chocolate is usually cheaper there, even better sometimes, than in souvenir or specialty stores. I stock up on little chocolate or caramel bars or gummies as gifts & for myself, even for small treats during my travels.
Perfume mixed into Vaseline in a small GoTub (Vaseline does not count as a liquid). Just a small dab on my wrists and neck in the morning and I no longer feel like a grubby vagrant but rather a sophisticated traveler 😅
I highly recommend Lush Godiva shampoo bar, especially for hard water. It was their most popular for many years but then they discontinued it (why??) and I just found out it's back!❣ They had already discontinued "Hard" which was for hard water (water with high mineral content) and their statement that the cocoa butter in it made it work better in hard water is the only reason I tried Godiva to begin with. Since I have very oily hair that's difficult to get clean and only put conditioner on the ends, the "shampoo and conditioner" billing for Godiva didn't sound right for me. Cocoa butter helping remove oil from hair when the water is hard seems very counterintuitive to me, but does seem to actually work. I also like Seanik. It works second-best for me most places and actually better than Godiva in the water at my mother's house. The shampoo bar(s) that were supposed to be best for oily hair according to Lush didn't work that well for me. If you want your Lush bars to last, please see my comment about organza bags.
Thank you as always for your great tips, And wow you said Nepal😮 did you visit Nepal? Im from Nepal🇳🇵 I'm a Nepali Good to hear that you were in Nepal❤❤❤
I travel with almost everything you have mentioned here and I also include a lavender stick to help with sleep or stress. would coconut butter be considered a solid? it makes for a great moisturizer. Thanks for all your tips and tricks - another great video, Nora!
Yay - great minds think alike! Yep - Coconut butter is a solid (as long as you're not in a tropical place where it melted!). Curious about the lavender stick - checking that out now!
So I can buy those travel size TSA approved from stores?.. they have them already in a zip bag.. I’ve been looking into it..I noticed most are under 3oz?
Hi Jing, I'm not totally sure what you're asking about. But I have links in the description to everything I talked about and more. If you're talking about the bag itself, then yes - a ziploc bag will do.
I really love Evan Healy products especially the Whipped Shea Butter lip balm, the Wild Carrot Eye Balm and the Sanctuary Replenishing Balm. The Blue Cactus Cooling Balm is good too. The Patchouli Frankincense Balm is way too patchouli. The blemish oil is amazing, but it is a liquid in a minuscule bottle. Their products are very expensive, but they last and are worth it. Thanks for the tips.
@@tiffanynoble3029 Great question. TSA will technically look at the number of people traveling and the number of liquids bags in the tray. That said, I'm now wondering myself about the regulations....you might want to check the TSA website to make sure.
So many comments! :) Check out Attitude. Clean Ingredients and many of their products are plastic-free (biodegradable cardboard). I love the solid shampoo, conditioner, body bar, body scrub, and deodorant. I've just started testing the sunscreen, spf lip balm, face cleanser, scrub, and mask (all solid and in cardboard). @@ingridlarocque2938 Aw, thanks! I got the top in Mexico a few years ago :-)
Wow! Great to know. Thanks Beverli!
Great Tip!😊
I cut a small piece off for travel. I didn't know about the hard cover.
@@lisalap5975 clever !
Which conditioner is it? Mine is gold and smells like vanilla.
Thanks for weighing in with your expert experience, Matt!
So according to TSA salt is a liquid
Wow - great tip! Thanks :-)
I like this one!
Take your fav moisturizer , hair cond, face toner, etc take a sponge and cut into pieces or use cotton eye pads , soak your product in them and label and store in seperate snack size zip lock bags.TSA has never questioned or taken them .
Great tip with the soaked eye pads/sponge! It's only practical for a short trip however; can't exactly soak 3 months of cotton eye pads! Ha ha.
@@NoraDunn agree. Better just to buy like a local for lengthy trips.
I'm so glad you've found my videos helpful, and also that you're on team solid-toiletries! Game changer. :-)
Ha ha - good call!
I keep mine separate because my "edibles" aren't liquid! I strongly suggest trying the toothpaste tablets
@@lisalap5975 +1 on the toothpaste tabs!
I use eco-dent powder toothpaste at home & on the road. It’s fantastic
@@myfriendschmeeda Yay! I'm all for powder/tab toothpaste.
Fantastic suggestions Jan - thanks!
Ha - thanks Robert! Tigerbalm is a good addition to the list.
Great tips - thanks Julie!
Thanks for the suggestions!
Thanks for the suggestions!
Thanks for the suggestions!
What is the Sunscreen component?
Oil of olay has dry cleansing cloths with soap in them. This eliminates the need to pack liquid cleanser
Very useful!
Kate McLeod makes a great lotion bar. They don't have any wax in them so they warm up in the hands easily and goes on smooth. Plus they smell great 👌🏻
Thanks Amanda!
Ha! Yes, flying has changed a wee bit since the piston engine days. Glad you learned about some solid toiletry hacks!
Twin Otter if you want to go low, slow, and noisy! A few remote operators used them for sced flights when I lived up North. They had their own terminal, so security wasn't an issue at that time and place.
For a moisturizer, Aquaphor makes a jumbo stick that has been great. Thanks for posting!

Thank you! Great breakdown with a great, animated, captivating presentation. Do not ever chsnge that! The whole time I was thinking “wow, she’d be an anazing, fun teacher” lol. Especially your toothpaste tab moment. 😬. And you are gorgeous!
Aw....thanks!
Boomstick by Cindy Joseph. Their solid stick make up and moisturizers are perfect.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Great call on slicing up your shampoo/conditioner/soap bars!
Thanks for all the tips. I’m new to the “only carry on” club. So interesting what is out there in solid form. Great video!
Thanks Virginia! Solid toiletries rock. Hope you find some good stuff to take with you on your next trip!
Such a great informative vid with great go-to links below. Thanks Nora! You really rock it! ❤
Thank you Rita & MultiShahina! This video was fun to make.
Thanks for the tips!
Great tip!
Nice! I've recently discovered KITSCH and I'm a BIG fan.
I also use solid mouthwash by Lush or by Georganics. You can carry them pretty much everywhere and they taste so good.
I personally don't like the taste of the Lush ones, and they're a bit too grainy to be effective for me. Never heard of Georganics though....
Try also Lush solid perfumes. They come in pretty handy when you are out and about.
@@geipi7232 Yes!
The solid moisturizer for traveling (and non traveling) I use is a 1 oz 100% cocoa butter (“The yellow stick from Cococare). It is solid but when applying on your face, lips or body melts and it works good for me as moisturizer. And smells like chocolate!
Good to know it works well! I've seen it, but wondered how effective it is as a full body moisturizer (as opposed to for just face/hands/lips).
I've never had good results with hair products from Lush. I use the solid shampoo and conditioner bars from Kitsch. Their formulas for different hair needs are SO MUCH BETTER than any other solid hair care products I've found anywhere else.
I recently started using Kitsch, and I love it! In fact, I got them to sponsor my latest video: ruclips.net/video/4IBptqO5hGU/видео.html
I just used my Nora Code on my first order from Kitsch
I just used my Nora code on my first Kitsch order too! After 2 week in UK and Ireland I'm excited to consolidate my liquids more. The Lush products always had too much smell for me, so I"m very hopeful for the Kitsch bars.
@@laura324n I hope you love them! I must say, I'm a total KITSCH convert now. And the smell is wonderful but not overpowering at all.

😅Ethique does a solid moisturiser , in full size as well as a mini to trial -ships worldwide !
Awesome - thanks for the suggestion, Sara!
Thanks for the tip!
Your channel is truly enjoyable and informative to watch!
Greetings from Sweden☀🌻☀
Glad you enjoy it! Thank you :-)
Individual wipes in anything… deodorant, moisturizer, make up remover, perfume, hand wipe, disinfectant, hand sterilizer, and more will get through TSA.
The wipes strategy is ace!
Great system, Shelley! Thanks for sharing!
What is 3D makeup system? 🤔
What is the brand of the solid makeup you use?
I use strong antiperspirant wipes from Zero Sweat because deodorant won't cut it for me. (At home I was already using Certain Dri roll-on which is the same chemical and available in local stores. Both brands are cruelty-free and vegan. Certain Dri also makes other antiperspirant/deodorant products, some solid, which are good and gentler.)
Zero Sweat comes in little pouches, like wet wipes, and I use one a few times (more frequently than the "up to 7 days" they claim they can last) putting it back in its wrapper and then tightly sealing in ziplock bags between uses. I've only found them online. Once, the site I ordered through only sent one box when I ordered two, but when I found a way to contact the Zero Sweat people themselves they were very helpful, polite, and immediately rectified the problem.
Great suggestion - thanks!
I make my own super easy lotion bars so I can vary the oil content and size for the season or destination I'm traveling to.
Ooh - clever! Because I've had lotion bars that melt too easily in the heat, and others that just won't melt in the cold!
Amen to that! Women seem to need a lot more finicky things as part of our daily routines.
I put a bunch of cotton pads in a resealable zip bag, Then saturate them with witch hazel. Just don’t have too much so that you can see the liquid. Also works for micellar water. Then, doesn’t count as a liquid
Great trick! (for short trips)
Thanks for sharing, Kimberly!
@@cathystatz578 Good to know! Thanks Cathy :-)
@@NoraDunn thanks! Being waterproof and drying the soap doesn’t sound possible… I’ll look for the link🪄
I’ve been also using these bags, and they are great! The one I have has a suction cup so it also solves the problem of putting the soap somewhere if the shower doesn’t have a rack.
@@tatianapashkova7275 Nice!

Great carry-on options. I use a few of these and will hunt up a few new ones to try. Thanks so much!
Wow - interesting! Thanks for the intel, Lisa.
I can second them wanting you to use their bags at Heathrow
This happened to me as well in August of 2023.
I love the solid moisturizer by Peach that I use on my hands/body. Warning - do not leave in a hot car, it will melt and resolidify grainy/split.

Wow, interesting about the deodorant! I often get pulled aside for totally random things - ha ha!
Just flew back from Buenos Aires, AR. I filled my own metal water bottle in the starbucks across my gate with hot water but am of the Delta agent poured out my water before allowing me boarding the plane. Yes, security rules can be various every where.
Yes, sadly many flights from South America to the US have secondary security at the gate. It's bizarre.

Wow - great tip!

Sure! As long as they all fit in the 1-quart bag allowed for liquids.
I second the issues with lotion bars. So many of them just end up feeling like an oily film on top of skin that still feels dry. And I've tried a *bunch*.
Yep, I've mostly given up on lotion bars.
I found a recipe for solid lotion on Pinterest. It lasts a long time. All of these solid toiletries save on plastics. I also use solid shampoo or ordinary hotel soap on my face and moisturizer samples on trips.

Would you share that recipe? or the link? :)
Great video! Can we pack 100g Palmer's cocoa butter solid tub in our carry on? Many thanks
Thanks! I'm not sure about 100g......it must be 100ml or less. The weight is irrelevant. And even though it's solid, you COULD be told it's a liquid, so I'd keep it within the 3-1-1- limits.
Hi, when using the TSA 311 method does the container carrying the liquid have to be a Clear/see-through container??
No, just the bag that has all liquids.
I just ordered the deodorant anxious to try. Thanks for the ideas.❤
Ooh - I hope you love it as much as I do!
@@NoraDunn I too have used it for years at home and traveling.
Shiseido stuck sunscreen is great. Lasts for ever and is in a small package
Excellent - thanks for the suggestion Carroll!
I travelled domestically a few weeks ago in Australia and they didn’t seem to worry about water bottles at security. We didn’t even need to have the baggie either.
Excellent!
Which carry on baggage do you recommend I should buy?
Thanks for the helpful hints
Ooh - a lot to consider. Soft-shell vs hard-sided; rolling vs backpack, and more!
Thank you for the tips. I suppose I could put larger liquid items in my checked luggage 🧳 without an issue with TSA, correct?
yes
Not necessarily. Lots of larger liquids like bottles of wine and booze alarm the CTX machines and they have to be checked and cleared by hand. After being checked they are good to go unless they are more than 80 proof.
Didn't know that Matt. Thanks for the tip!
My favorite face snd body soap that can also be a shampoo is kiss my face pure olive oil soap.
Thanks for sharing, Holly!
What about samples? I have a lot of sample shampoos, makeup products that companies give you when you place an order. Are they okay to put in your liquids bag? I have the Jane Iredale powder sunscreen so thanks to your video I know where to put it.Thank you
Absolutely! As long as those samples are each under 100ml and they all fit into the 3oz bag, you're golden.
@@NoraDunn Super. Thank you.
Nora I’m not sure if it was on this video but I fell in love with the hobo roll but cannot seem to buy it! Do you have an alternative ?
Hi Ana, great question! I was in touch with the founders who have a few projects on the go; they're redesigning and rebranding their company and plan to relaunch, but it may not be until next year! In the meantime, I don't have a truly comparable alternative; compressible packing cubes work....
MOISTURIZER OPTION: Coconut oil is readily asborbed into the skin might be an option a lil like a single finger swipe goes a long way.
Awesome! Only thing is, coconut oil isn't always a true solid. Depends on the temperature.
Yes. Amazon has some. Simplut is the brand. I believe there are others. I’m always looking for any without stevia. I can’t stand the taste.
Unpaste and Bite both have fluoride options
@@lisaf-d8521 Thanks!!!
@@brandicarpenter8131 Thank you!!
What do you do for supplements. I generally take quite a lot..vitamin D, fish oils, etc. Is it likely to cause problems when bringing as carry on?
I don't have trouble with supplements. I even "decant" them into ziploc bags to save space (and I put the label from the supplement bottle in the bag too so I - and anybody else - can identify them), even though some people say that increases the risk of them being taken/scrutinized. I've never had a problem though.
What about feminine wipes, individually packaged? Or even in the home pack of 32?
Generally any kind of wipe is not considered a liquid.
Thank you
If you aren't taken to the exact product page, it means Amazon doesn't carry that exact brand in your country.
They included my solids with liquids on flight back to USA from London Heathrow this spring. 😔
Wha?? That's bizarre.
Well, my deodorant, which was the only solid I had, but you said that sometimes oddly consider stick deodorant a liquid.
Where did you get your blouse? I love it!!
Thanks! I actually got it in Mexico :-)
@@NoraDunn What?? No Amazon link? I'm going through withdrawal! 🤣🤣

A good tip is never take anything halfway across the planet that you can get easily on from any local store on arrival at your destination, buy small quantities, no more than you need for your stay & leave any leftovers for the maids as a tip rather than taking back home with you or on to your next destination.
Great strategy!
Help! No one ever talks about hairspray! I am an aerosol girl! What do I do? Can I put a full size can in a checked bag?
I ❤️ your videos!
Ooh good question! I believe you can pack full-sized aerosols in your checked luggage, as long as they have some sort of cap to protect it from being dispensed. As usual, best to check the airline's website to confirm.
So can you take sunscreen and normal stuff in your checked luggage?
You can take whatever you want (whatever size too) in checked luggage!
Jackie here.
What annoys me is when at our local airport we have seen people buying perfumes in the duty free to have them taken off them when boarding and put into the confiscated goods bin. I know this doesn't happen everywhere so i am thinking there was a scam going on amongst some of the staff.
Wow - that's not good. Shouldn't happen, especially since duty-free stuff comes in a special duty-free bag so it doesn't get confiscated.
In Nantucket, the only shopping was before customs, and the lovely gift sets of lotion I had bought were tossed before my eyes.
@@kindredanastasia Oh no!!! :(
Does this 3-1-1 rule include lipstick, mascara and eyeshadow pallets?
Eye shadow and lipstick are (usually) solid. Mascara may technically be a liquid but to be honest I never put it in my liquids bag.
Am a supermarket explorer as well.
Me too! They’re so interesting in foreign countries!
Love the breads, varied snack foods. And local candy or chocolate is usually cheaper there, even better sometimes, than in souvenir or specialty stores. I stock up on little chocolate or caramel bars or gummies as gifts & for myself, even for small treats during my travels.
Mary Kay makes a bar face wash. I like it.
Thanks Linda!
Perfume mixed into Vaseline in a small GoTub (Vaseline does not count as a liquid). Just a small dab on my wrists and neck in the morning and I no longer feel like a grubby vagrant but rather a sophisticated traveler 😅
Fantastic idea!
Vaseline is a Jelly according to TSA... So if this HAS worked it was outside of the US or you just got lucky.
I highly recommend Lush Godiva shampoo bar, especially for hard water. It was their most popular for many years but then they discontinued it (why??) and I just found out it's back!❣
They had already discontinued "Hard" which was for hard water (water with high mineral content) and their statement that the cocoa butter in it made it work better in hard water is the only reason I tried Godiva to begin with.
+1 for lush shampoo! Love it.
Thank you as always for your great tips,
And wow you said Nepal😮 did you visit Nepal?

I travel with almost everything you have mentioned here and I also include a lavender stick to help with sleep or stress. would coconut butter be considered a solid? it makes for a great moisturizer. Thanks for all your tips and tricks - another great video, Nora!
Yay - great minds think alike! Yep - Coconut butter is a solid (as long as you're not in a tropical place where it melted!).
Curious about the lavender stick - checking that out now!
coconut butter can make a very good hair conditioner and skin moisturizer -- just be sure the airport has their AC running
@@saundrayork767 Ha ha! Yes....or it can be quite messy.
So I can buy those travel size TSA approved from stores?.. they have them already in a zip bag.. I’ve been looking into it..I noticed most are under 3oz?
Hi Jing,
I'm not totally sure what you're asking about. But I have links in the description to everything I talked about and more. If you're talking about the bag itself, then yes - a ziploc bag will do.
Thank you for your time and posting. Finally, being bald is going to work out for me... Ya.

Ooh - thank for the tip!
Ooh - great recommendation! I'm going to check them out. Thanks Lorna!
Patchouli is way to patchouli for me, lol.
Can I have multiple 100ml containers with the same liquid. Ie. Shampoo in 3 100 ml bottles
Absolutely!
I accidentally carried a ceramic jack knife in my carryon a few times. 4-5” blade to cut produce. It doesn’t show up on xray.
Yes it does.
@@staubach1979rt How did it pass the TSA over and over? I used to be an xray tech. Ceramic doesn’t show up as a ‘knife’ in a bag full of other things.
Is it one quart bag per person or per bag?
Per person.
@@NoraDunnhow does that work if you're traveling with kids? And each person doesn't have an individual bag?
@@tiffanynoble3029 Great question. TSA will technically look at the number of people traveling and the number of liquids bags in the tray. That said, I'm now wondering myself about the regulations....you might want to check the TSA website to make sure.
So many comments! :) Check out Attitude. Clean Ingredients and many of their products are plastic-free (biodegradable cardboard). I love the solid shampoo, conditioner, body bar, body scrub, and deodorant. I've just started testing the sunscreen, spf lip balm, face cleanser, scrub, and mask (all solid and in cardboard). Next on my list are the solid hand soap, serum, and creams. They also have makeup in plastic free stick form.

What about essential oils?
I don't tend to travel with essential oils. But they generally come in small enough vials that they can be carried on pretty easily.
